I just had a great experience here. At the last minute, I realized that could "double dip" on my VSP insurance because I was changing jobs (i.e. get contacts under my old employers plan and then go back a month or two later for glasses on the new VSP plan). Unfortunately, I didn't think about this until two days before the end of the month. I explained the situation and they were able to get me in that day, which isn't that surprising because I was between jobs so my schedule was flexible. I have a pair of glasses so I asked for a contacts appointment and asked what the costs would be. They told me that my VSP covered more for glasses than contacts so I would be responsible for $44. I did the exam and they told me I would have to come back in a week. I had explained that my coverage would end at the end of the month so I was worried I'd have to pay again for the follow-up visit but the initial payment included both visits. They also did the dilation test on the second visit because I had to drive right after my appointment on the first day and there wasn't an additional charge. I'm sure that the payment they got on the first day was designed to cover all of these services but I also know plenty of people who would consider it two different chargeable events. Finally, to the contacts. From the beginning they were very up front with me about the fact that my plan has much better coverage for glasses than contacts but I had a relatively new pair of glasses. I explained that even if I wasn't maximizing my benefit I would prefer contacts. They were fine with that and told me the plan would cover $104 for contacts. Each six month box (need one for each eye) was $46 dollars. The guy asked if I wanted to get an extra box so I didn't waste the remaining $12 and when I said no he was fine with that and there was no additional pressure. I just got back from my follow-up visit and they are tweaking the prescription some so it will take 3-5 days to get the right contacts (I have the free demo pair) but there still isn't a charge. I will go back here and would recommend it to others. I read the negative reviews before I went but think that as long as you are clear about what you want and ask the right questions this is a great place! read more

The entire team here is wonderful. An example: I lost my rebate form & receipt from my last contacts order, so I called to request a reprint. When I got to HyperOptics, DeeDee had not only printed everything for me, but had also filled out all the required forms and put them in an addressed envelope to the Acuvue rebates team (complete with my return address already in the corner of the letter)! That's the kind of experience you get here. It's just unbelievable. Not to mention, Dr. Will is the best optometrist I've ever had (and I've been in constant contact with one since I getting the "four eyes" moniker in 5th grade). Reputable Optometry with Great Staff With any eye issue, people will tend to panic and think of the worst imaginable outcome. But luckily, HyperOptics was able to diagnose the problem swiftly and accurately. HyperOptics also stays open later than normal optometry establishments to accommodate late day accidents. I was at a conference, snoozing through a PowerPoint presentation, and upon waking, realized I couldn't rub the sleep from my right eye. It just stayed blurry. It didn't take me long to realize that my vision had fizzled. I've never had eye problems before. I quickly scheduled an appointment at HyperOptics. For my first eye exam, I was surprisingly comfortable here. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, willing to walk around and talk about frames and lenses, willing to print receipts and explain insurance policy coverages. The tests themselves were quick and painless; I actually had a great time. Everyone answered my questions well, and I had a ton of them (ie; how long will my pupils stay dilated? what is macular degeneration? how can I prevent glaucoma?) My only concern is the general high-priced feel of the store. Fortunately, my insurance covered my eye exam (minus a $20 copay). But the frames are expensive, though high-quality designer items... I could not be happier! Dr. Will is fantastic - very clear in what he is going to do regarding the eye exam, and patient. After years of consistently getting a too-strong prescription for my eyes, he finally gets it right! And no considerations for some wonky "eye training maneuvers". Chris is the best in helping you pick out your frames - he was very honest, and knew the lines very well that they carried. We went through the entire collection together, and in the end, it was the last pair that he brought out that I selected! The lenses & the frames were ready in exactly a week. After a few weeks - the glasses were falling apart, and after calling Chris, he was completely helpful, and even managed to coordinate new frames & new lenses so that I wouldn't be without my glasses! After waiting for two weeks, the glasses were ready, and all I had to do was come in and swap out the old for the new. I cannot rave enough about the level of service...I am never going anywhere else! read more

The staff here are absolutely fabulous. Dr. Ha was knowledgable and very informative. She made me feel comfortable and took the time to get to know me while still being quick and efficient. A.J. was extremely helpful with scheduling my appointment as well as finding the right frames for me while staying within my price range. He spent almost an hour and a half with me looking for the right pair that fit my face and fashion. Also since the store is on the Haight I was able to grab a bite to eat in addition to some retail therapy. I am definitely returning here for all of my eye needs. read more

The store has a great selection and the opticians are professional and seem very good -- 5 stars for the practitioners and store environment and selection. But the front desk/back office, while very very nice, and I believe earnest in their desire to help you, were a bit disorganized/overwhelmed and I had to call 4 times and email them to get a copy of my prescription and to find out the status of my order. Then when I came in to pick up my order, it was $25 higher than they quoted me on the phone, and I didn't get a detailed bill with the breakdown -- just the credit card receipt. That said, the prices seem to be very competitive and overall my experience was positive -- recommend. read more

I was visiting SF for New Years and my glasses have been loose for awhile. I decided to pop in and see if they could tighten my glasses for me. The gentlemen who assisted me was very helpful! I was honest and said I did not buy my glasses from their store, but he helped me anyway. He made sure I understood their store policy, that if anything were to happen they were not to blame and I said I understood. He tightened them and even adjusted the bends of my glasses to fit my head better. He went back at least three times just to adjust and re-adjust to my liking. I don't think I have ever received such amazing service considering he was just doing it because and not charging me for it. If I did live in SF, I would definitely go to them for their optometry services! A great selection in glasses and obvious great customer service. A+ in my book and I hope others have just as amazing experiences there. read more

Had my third annual visit today -- stellar support and care for my eyes, as always! I went years with various optometrists who were more interested in taking expensive retinal images, shrugging off my inability to fiddle with their air pressure machine with "I'm sure you're fine," and even forgetting to note on the glasses order that I have astigmatism, not nearsightedness... Frustrations aside, I really appreciate Drs. Diana and Jenny taking the time to explain the purpose behind each test, each eyedrop, each indicator of things we should keep an eye on (no pun intended). The office staff goes above in beyond in making sure patients leave without any questions and take the time to make good impressions and even better relationships. 20/20 stars! read more

I was probably one of the worst customers that they could imagine -- I decided last minute that I wanted to update my contacts prescription in addition to my glasses prescription, and they worked with me. Instead of rushing it, they scheduled an additional appointment so that Dr. Lisa would have enough time to give me an accurate prescription. Then, I initially chose glasses that I, when they arrived, didn't actually like. (Sorry! so i ran out of contacts awhile ago. ive been real lazy about it. i finally went in last week, cause damn, i hate wearing a helmet with glasses. its just not comfortable. i got a recommendation from hen a. i dont know if you guys noticed, but hes got this thing about glasses. im figuring he knows his shit. dr chantaduly was great. easy going and things went smoothly..... the best part, he doesnt use that *look right here while i shoot a burst of air into your unsuspecting eye* shit. that right there is worth the trip out to the haight for me. edit some folks have asked....no this doc uses a new, modern test that doesn't require that blast of air. read more

This place was right next to my old apartment, and I could get a Saturday appointment for an eye exam, so I decided to give it a try. Their facilities don't inspire a lot of confidence, since the exam rooms look very "tacked on" to the store itself. They gave me the standard exam, which was ok, but it didn't really feel like going to an eye doctor. It felt like shopping, but with a doctor's assistance. I don't think I got inadequate service, but I don't feel like I got much beyond adequate, either. read more

My husband recently went here for the first time to get new glasses and sunglasses. I will say that the staff were all very friendly and helpful, and definitely took their time to help him pick out glasses her really liked. The problem came after we order the glasses and started waiting for them to arrive. The staff originally told my husband it would take 7-10 business days for one pair, and 10-14 days for the other (they had to special order them). That was all fine. After seven business days, my husband called to check on both pairs. The first pair were not in, and the staff person gave some noncomittal response that they might be in the next week. He then informed my husband that the second pair was on back order and they weren't sure when they could get them from the warehouse. They waited a full seven business days (over a week) to tell my husband this - and didn't even call him directly, he had to call to check in. It only got worse from there. He asked them to call with an update as soon as they could. A week later, he finally walked down to the store to check. They actually had his first pair (somehow forget to tell them they had arrived?) but said the second pair had just been ordered and would not arrive until the next week. So fine, he went home and waited another week. After that time, he went down to the store again, and they said the glasses had shipped the week before but were not here, and they did not know when they would arrive. The staff person said he would call the manufacturer to get a better estimate on when they would arrive, but has never called my husband back with more info. At this point, it has been over 5 weeks and my husband still does not have his glasses. These are to replace his every day glasses, and we are going on vacation in a little over a week. He let the staff know this, but they could not say whether the glasses would be here before we left or not. Everyone has been nice, but they absolutely DO NOT understand customer service. It should not be the customer's job to check in constantly to receive updates on the status of something the customer has ALREADY PAID FOR. And if you know something is on backorder, but upfront about it. With all the money we've given to the shop, they should be trying much harder to keep us informed and get the product to us as soon as possible. I cannot say we will ever use this store again, it has been nothing but frustration for the last five weeks. read more

I think I may finally have broken the curse of National Health bespectacled geek shame! As a child I was odder then I am now - somewhat intense, sallow faced and painfully painfully shy! It came as a dreadful shock therefore, to discover that I had to wear glasses! It came as a worse shock to discover that my parents could only feasibly afford the nemesis of every child: NHS glasses! Someone somewhere worked for the NHS in the 80's, designing hideous, ridicule attracting glasses especially for small insecure children and that it is where the curse began! I spent about 4 years wearing an assortment of the ugliest and most unflattering glasses and being consistently scarred by the experiences until finally I was able to start wearing contacts! THANK GOD! However 20 years down the line and a couple of years of dry eyes, getting annoyed with having to put contacts in to go the shop or maybe just seeing lots of people with very cool glasses I decided to see if I could break the phobia and discomfort of wearing glasses! Thanks to Yelpers I found Hyperoptics in the Haight who are fabulous!!! Firstly I had an eye exam and contact lens fit with Dr Will, during which I discovered that I was right, I had been wearing the wrong prescription (to the evil optician from last year - nuh nuh nuh!). I FINALLY was told that I had an astigmatism - something had suspected for a while but no one had ever confirmed this and had said astigmatism explained to me! Thanks Dr Will you were great and sorry I chatted so long to you but I found our chat v interesting! Then I was handed over to Chris, the manager who helped me shop for the kind of glasses I had been longing to be brave enough to wear for years! Chris was knowledgeable, helpful, complimentary and honest which is GREAT!!! I didn't feel 'sold to' nor too self conscious!Flash forward to a week later and I am wearing my new specs, I feel hot! Which I can't believe and I am so Impressed with the Hyperoptics guys for all their help and advice in choosing my specs! Basically I can't recommend them enough! read more

I went to HyperOptics for the first time two weekends ago. I was greeted by friendly receptionists as soon as I got in. Jason assisted me with my frame selection and offered useful advice. He walked me through my insurance and did a great job explaining my vision benefits. What I really liked about HyperOptics is that everyone working there was really friendly and genuine. Dr. Lisa was very thorough with her examination. The frame selection is top notch. They might not have as many frames as Lens Crafters but most of the frames at HyperOptics are awesome. Lens Crafters might have triple the selection but most of them are framed that were popular back in Benjamin Franklin's days. read more

Their selection is made up of beautiful and fabulous eyewear which I absolutely covet. Would i buy things here? Absolutely I would. I probably will. I came in mid-day on Tuesday to get a screw replaced in my sunglasses. They charged me three dollars and checked my id. I mean, ok. That's fine, if a little weird. The thing that bothered me was the lack of conversation. They barely made eye contact - and they're an eyeglass store, so the eye-rony is alive and well. I've lived in this neighborhood for ten years, and every other retailer is so friendly and warm, and the people here are very aloof. Culturally, for the Haight, it's strange, and feels more like the affectation I'd expect in The Marina. I miss City Optix. They were some seriously nice people. read more

I've been searching for a good decent and not too pricey pair of sunglasses. My regular glasses broke the bank and now I had to look for another stupid pair for the sun. It hurts my bank account especially because I don't have a vision plan. Well, anyways, I went home for the weekend and decided to walk around Haight for different reasons (I usually avoid Haight cause of parking and traffic). I passed by Hyperoptics and just fell in love with what they had to offer. They have many frames for blind people like me, but offer stylish options. Prices are decent and the staff is excellent (I love Chris). I didn't have to get an eye exam so looking for frames were it. I just have to say that the customer service here is purely impeccable. Hyperoptics has been my eye doctor for about 6 years now. Dr. Lisa and Dr. Will are both the greatest eye doctors I've ever met!!! They are always so informative, attentive, and very patient. I feel like I'm in the company of great friends! I would have given Hyperoptics a five if it weren't for their new receptionists. They are the very first impression of the business (with a reception area) and the face of the company. I believe they are there to make you feel comfortable and at ease. In this case, they need to make you feel like you are about to spend your hard earned money at a great place. I don't know their names, and they didn't care to give them either. During my visit, both were very unfriendly, like they would rather be someplace else than do their jobs. They're clearly not acquainted with the word smile. They were both very short, uninformative...did not make eye contact. I haven't been in customer service for about 7 years now, but when I was I'm pretty sure making eye contact with customers, especially when they're asking you a question, is very important...probably on the top 3 of customer service etiquetttes. I have 3 suggestions for both of the unhappy receptionists: 1. Take Customer Service classes 2. Take the sticks out their asses that seem to make them not smile the first 2 suggestions are best if they want to stay at Hyperoptics 3. Find another eye store to ruin and customers to not tend to. Chris, the former optician they had for the 6 years I've gone to Hyperoptics... up until July of 2011, was great for Hyperoptics. He greeted me with a smile each time, always introduced himself to unfamiliar faces. He's moved on to be a fabulous optician in LA. Oh Chris, how we miss you and your services so much! read more

After being fed up with our previous optometrist due to various gaffs, I decided to give HyperOptics a try. They have weekend appointments available, and are not too far from my crib. So far, I couldn't be happier. The doctors here are very competent and friendly, and way more down to earth than my previous optometrist. The guys who work at the front desk (Chris and?) are awesome too. Very helpful, friendly, etc. I went in the other day needing to have my plastic framed glasses fixed after one of the sides snapped off, and they were able to fix them in just a few minutes. I also said I needed a case, which they gave me. The cost of all this great service on this particular occasion? $0. Not to say "go here and you'll get free stuff", but am trying to point out how they go above and beyond. read more

Since I budget an eye exam only every 2 years, Dr. Lisa has been very helpful in getting me the most "bang" for my buck in terms of purchasing glasses, contacts, etc. And if you're like me and have the worst time finding frames that match my face, well then Chris is an absolute expert!
