What a gem. Hutton and Smith, whose motto is "gneiss beer for people who give a schist," represents "old" Chattanooga -- a small, homey brewery with somewhat left-field, hit-or-miss lagers, ales, IPAs, etc. H&S is a community brewery where dogs and humans commingle and talk: there are no television screens in the bar area, and if you sit down, you'll be treated like an old friend.

The initial entrance is a bit cramped, but if you walk past the bar, then there's a nice, open room with tables and couches to sit at. Indoor and outdoor areas are dog friendly, gender neutral bathrooms, full pours and half pours are available, and a self pour water tap is out. Alright selection of beers, but they do rotate by season. I recommend the vanilla nitro stout! Reason for 4 stars is the service was just okay.

Spent the day in Chattanooga with some friends and had a wonderful time enjoying the local food, entertainment, etc. A highlight of the day was Hutton & Smith Brewing where we stayed for a couple of hours enjoying many of their beers. I have to say that my favorites of the day were their stouts. The Vanilla Stout was good but the Doppelbock they had on tap was by far my favorite. I even ended up bringing some home with me in a growler.

We've really been digging on Hutton & Smith's beers since we moved back to Chatt - I always buy their IPA's from Sigler's, right next to where I work. So, we finally decided to check out their taproom a few nights ago! Super small, dark space around the main bar - they've got a few small tables and the regular barstools. There was a couple hanging out in there with their doggo, which made me really happy, lol. We walked up to the counter and ordered a couple of flights - bartender was super friendly! To the left hand side of the main, dark room, there's a doorway that leads to a larger, better lit space, with several tables, some couches, a few game tables, and their whiskey barrels for their aged beers. We liked this room a lot more, they had some groovy art on the walls and people were chilling, playing cards and whatnot. Brews were fabulous, all around - they have a really good selection of IPA's, sours, and a few stouts/porters to round out the options. That BA Belgian dark stout will put you on your rear, so be careful with that one, haha. Overall, great experience and really cool to get to try some of their beers that aren't widely distributed in Chattanooga stores!

We stopped in on our last day in Chattanooga and while we were impressed with almost every beer we tried (we each had a flight) we just didn't feel very welcome. The female bartender was polite and kind but just not warm and welcoming. The gentleman behind the counter never even made eye contact with us. Coming from FL where we have tons of small craft breweries we were just a tad less than impressed with the warmth of the place. Def a locals hang out and maybe they want to keep it that way.

Stopped by here while we were out celebrating my 30th birthday on a rainy Sunday. I love how quaint the space is. Exposed brick and two small rooms. Large bar with seating. Luckily it wasn't busy when we showed up. I can't imagine how this place might look on a Friday or Saturday. The bartender was so kind! Truly a large part of the great experience. I was very impressed with the number of beers they had on tap and the number of styles. I always enjoy getting flights. I really was floored with the prices. $3.50 for a 5 ounce?! Wow. My flight cost me over $13 and that's for just over a pint of beer. Yes, I did have some higher gravity styles on the flight, but I still feel as if this is too pricey. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the beers. Maybe it all had to do with the bad taste the prices put in my mouth. I will go back when I return to Chattanooga. The staff was great and I love the space. Congrats on the recent medal!

Ask the Community - Hutton & Smith Brewing

I have heard rumors that kids are not allowed in breweries in Chattanooga. Is this true? Making a trip with my one-year old and I really hate to miss out on beer just because I have him with me.

I'm also interested in knowing the "kid friendly" breweries. Do remember which breweries were not "kid friendly"?

We parked and before even going inside we went out front to take some the sun started to set too much. The mirror is done by a professional artist known for her beautiful wing designs. On the patio that we walked past to get to the inside was a live band playing, and there were a ton of cute dogs all over with their owners enjoying the music. It was the cutest sight. Inside there are 2 sections of the brewery, but they had the front closed so we couldn't use the back smaller part. I liked the small part to be honest with you. It wasn't super small, but it was much more quaint looking. Service was super friendly, offering us a samples of anything that we would like to try, but of course, we ultimately got a flight. Luckily for me , they also had the Lions game on so I was able to see the end of the game and our victory. They do have food on their menus, and I can definitely see us returning it to this location when we're in Chattanooga again.

Only the back part of the brewery was open, with an indoor and outdoor area, a couple TVs, and eclectic decor. They were running a promo: $3 for a 10 oz beer or $3 for a 16oz beer if you buy food. We got the Bird Watcher Kellerbier and Sunblaze American IPA -- both were fine. We also got the Mission-style burrito with al pastor ($11), as a Super Burrito ($2 upcharge for sour cream and avocado). This was the worst burrito I've had in a long time. Al pastor should be a balance of sweet and spicy; this was overpoweringly sweet. The side salsas had no heat, either. Mission-style burritos are known for their size, but this was a normal burrito, smaller than I would get at Chipotle. It took about 20 minutes to get the burrito which was too long.

We ended up at Pax Breu Ruim twice in one weekend a couple years back and didn't regret it for a second. I loved the draft espresso martini and winter sangria they had and the Paloma tasted like it should - like a fresh Paloma cocktail. We stopped in on a Tuesday night last month, which happened to be 20% off draft cocktails night. I tried the Talisman, which is the N.A. draft cocktail but added gin on the bartender's recommendation for $5 more. After the 20% discount, tip and the "liquor by the drink tax" (is that a Tennessee thing?) two drinks ended up being $15 each. Not bad at all, but I can't imagine how much it would have been without the discount... Even so, the cocktails were super interesting, not just basic options, so I was definitely intrigued and always excited to see what they come up with next. Definitely my go-to dog friendly spot to grab drinks and BYOFood that isn't just a brewery!

Walking in , you could see a long bar that you could sit at or just order food at in a designated area and seat yourself around the place. We chose to set up the bar, of course. Ben and I even switch seats, because he is worried about his personal space then I am. Most of the food that was on the menu was barbecue driven but since I had just had poke, I was not hungry. The servers were very friendly when we were ordering and checked in on us often I just wish that they would have kept the line in a more orderly fashion since there was a designated area for ordering specifically.

So, as I was told by the staff, the restaurant portion has been spun off and sold from the brewery itself, so this is my first visit for food, since that has transpired. It is now known as "BUDS & BREWS CHATTANOOGA", part of a larger group out of Nashville, I was told. The bar/brewery looks the same, there is the same helpful staff, but in all honesty, the food just isn't as good. The pulled pork, was okay at best, the fried onion rings, just too greasy, and the chicken wings, just too dry. When first opened NR was the first microbrewery to prepare and offer their own food, and the bbq was stellar, but I cannot make that same statement today. Brews are still good, but if need a good microbrewery in Chattanooga that can offer you good food to go along with that cold one, my recommendation is either Oddstory or Five Wits. I'll continue to come to NR for a beer, as their Moonpie Stout is absolutely one of the best beers you can find in Chattanooga, but like I said if I am hungry too, this will no longer be one of my primary spots to consider.
