Waitress need better personality when greeting customers..Food was horrible I ordered filet mignon and my husband told the waitress medium rare..when it arrived it was dry when we mentioned this she seemed disturbed and tried to say I had stated I wanted the steak dry regardless she got me another steak when that arrived you could tell it had been pulled from the freezer and put on grill it looked good but when I cut into it it wasn't even slightly red inside it was pale white I told her it was okay but there and then we decided not to eat anymore and just leave....one other thing the clam chowder was cold and watery... I was there today with my adult son. We had reservations and were seated in an area which we were the first seated in that room. Shortly another couple were seated in the same room. Eventually they ordered their drinks and then ordered their meals. We continued to sit there for over 20 minutes with no one taking any order from us. We have been wanting to stop in for dinner for ages. We have had their catering thru the CHS Marching Band events years ago. The website is not aligned with the hours posted on the outside of their front entrance. We made a reservation to be sure. We were just glad they were still in business. We loved it, delicious! will preface this with that I am not a picky eater b hostess took the other party table without a knowledge Ing us. A few moments went by and the waitress finally asked us if we had been helped at which point I had told her no not yet. We were then brought to our table and seated. Having never been here before I will say that my first impression is that it is very dark and smells very much like mildew. My daughter who is allergic to mold immediately got a stuffy nose and was sniffling throughout the dinner. Odor is worse in the bathrooms but the whole place smells like a basement. Our waiter did not even say a proper greeting or give his name but rather immediately asked us if we wanted drinks. Seems like he was just going through the motions and not trying to be hospitable. We ordered the calamari which was the worst that I've had anywhere. I've eaten this dozens of times. Overcooked, dry, with some pieces actually crispy and not the outside only but the actual calamari inside. Also added were what appeared to be red bell peppers deep-fried also but without any breading. Possibly onions too but they were cut so thin and burned that it was hard to tell. Weird combination overall. The topping was some spicy mayo that I think I have in the refrigerator at home. The artichoke dip came in a small dish with artichoke pieces so large that it looked like they were just thrown out of the can into this creamy mix. Difficult to eat. Cheese on top was overcooked. I got a petite filet that was supposed to be cooked medium but came out medium well and some parts well done. I also got a lobster tail on the side that was super tiny and rubbery. I used the drawn butter to dip my steak in to make it less dry but that didn't help much. If I'm spending that much money on an actually nice cut such as a filet, I don't expect it to be dry and gross. I ordered macaroni and cheese for my child and got a box of Kraft. Same type of pasta sauce and cheese sauce. I know the kids like macaroni and cheese but how can they cook that and charge what they charge when each box costs about a dollar at the store? Our bill with tip was over $300 and I left feeling embarrassed that we brought a guest there for a disgusting meal. Table next to us got up and spoke to each other stating they wish to steak had been flavored more. This place needs a major overhaul from the decor down to their menu selection and new cooks. Tried this place out because I always see it and wanted to see what it was about. It was terrible. The steak was super well done and tough which surprised me because it's a steakhouse.... The chicken was the best part of the meal (that's what the two stars are for) it was grilled with a spicy sauce I would recommend it. The shrimp was dry and way over cooked, the calamari was not crispy at all and very very rubbery. The potato skins were hard and dry and the crab stuffed mushrooms were ok but gritty. read more

This place is exactly as I expected it to be based on other Yelp reviews. The food tasted fine but was nothing to write home about. The prices were good, you get what you pay for. The ambiance was something else. When we drove up my kids asked if we were in Idyllwild and it seemed like we stepped back into the 70s when we went inside. I do not plan to go back, I would prefer to pay more for an outstanding experience. That said, the service was great and our server was very nice and was on top of everything. read more

Omg what a Diamond in a rough. This Steak House is really a great place to eat. My wife had the Filet Mignon and I had the Hunter Cut prime Rib. Wow what a great dinner. We saw an advertisement for "Best Prime Rib in Town", so we were very interested. Prime Rib was dry and inadequately seasoned. Beef Tips were good, but half were tender, the other half tough. Onion Rings, Split Pea Soup and Au Gratin Potatoes were delicious. We must say the service was excellent. However, for the price overall, the quality is just not there. The good thing about this restaurant was that We were a party of 10 and got seated right away. however once we were seated service took a bit of time and everyone seemed too busy and was running around frantically. Our waitress seemed super busy and was going about a mile per minute and we had to ask for things multiple times sometimes because they would for they would get busy and forget. Our waitress seemed like she didn't really have time for us and was not all that attentive. The food was really good. Not the best steak I've ever had but it was pretty good. I got The Porterhouse, half of it was good but the other half was pretty dry. Also the portion of fries were kind of small. For dessert I got the Mudhouse pie and that was really really really good 10 out of 10 would recommend. So overall the food was good however the service was a little subpar. My wife and I returned after an absence of three years secondary to the pandemic. As mentioned by many the restaurant badly needs an update. It does have a distinct odor as others have mentioned. My clam chowder was lumpy with not much flavor. My regular cut of prime rib was taste but also had a lot of fat waste. My wife had salmon which she enjoyed.The service remains very good. Like all restaurants the prices are up. Overall we will go somewhere else next time. read more

My plate also came with shrimp cocktail which was serve on a plate of cabbage. For the price you pay for this food it definitely was not worth it. My first time here, not gonna lie i was buttered up with the warm welcome from Dina my server after the initial 15 min wait. Then finally got our appetizer. Was waiting a good while for my order to be taken. Two tables came in after us and were serviced first. I was looking forward to a good steak but was very disappointed. I informed whom I assumed was a manger (red shirt) about ready to have our order taken, was informed the server would be notified. Waited another 10 mins then our server serviced another table after telling she will be right with us. I understand if it was packed but I was only seated outside and if it was busy a simple "hey, sorry for the wait we're busy at the moment" would've helped. My daughter decided to treat us to Hunters for dinner on April. 9th so she put in a Door Dash Order. I ordeeed my ribeye well done because the last few times when I ordered medium well it was medium. Well I got an almost rare steak. The potato was really hard and the Caesar salad skimpy at best. When ordering from a steak house I expect quality and accuracy in the product that I receive, this was not the case. They tell you to call Door Dash to resolve your issue and Door Dash says that they can only help if an item was missing not because the steak was undercooked. $41 down the drain and neither establishment wants to assume the corrective action. The manager who attempted to seat us was rather gruff and was unhappy that we wouldn't accept a table right outside the entrance to the kitchen. She later seated us at a table that could accommodate a wheelchair after ruling out several others. The prime rib for one person was very good but too chewy for another. My medium rare steak was closer to medium and a bit tough but had good flavor. The promised bread never arrived. The wait staff person was very attentive but unmasked. So it was a mixed bag. I have lived in Oceanside for 19 years. Hunters used to be that special place you went to for anniversary's and birthdays. I went last night for my brother-in-law's 47 birthday. A big deal, since he's currently battling cancer and just got good news. It was a big celebration day. First off, the smell when you walk in is awful, even tho they try to mask it by having a BBQ put out front to draw you in and try to put plug ins in the restaurant to mask the smell of old, moldy, dingy. It did not work. My knife was dirty and had to ask for another one. The booth we were sitting in was lumpy and you sank in from all the other butts in it previously, and you could see the underside of the seat. When sitting at the window, the blinds were drawn, which is sad, because we probably could have had a nice view of the lagoon...but you could see under the blinds, and the windows were dingy and dirty and you could see through the wood in the windows to the outside. The window pane was rotted through. When I got my salad, the lettuce was wilted and starting to brown, and the croutons were soggy. Then when my steak came, it was cooked correctly medium well...I know, I'm awful for doing that to a steak..but...the steak tasted like soap. The baked potato was fine. I had broccoli instead of mixed vegetables, nothing special about it. It's broccoli after all. The Chocolate cake they brought me as part of my early dinner special and for my brother-in-laws birthday was somewhere between a cake and a brownie...wasn't really moist and delicious looking. I didn't even eat, but those with me tried it and did not like it. Lastly, this morning was the topper of it all. I ended up with diarrhea this morning and a rumbling tummy. Sorry to be graphic, but can only assume it was food poisoning from my meal the evening before. This is very sad for me because I used to enjoy Hunters as our special, go to place. Now it is just dingy, in need of a major remodeling and cleaning and maintenance. I will not be going back. My Husband and I chose Hunters to cater our midday wedding reception in Escondido a few months ago, at Felecita Park. We couldn't be more pleased. The staff were there to help with EVERYTHING- not just the catering. Wherever they could pitch in, they did: from setting up chairs to handing paper lanterns- what team players! The price is incredible as well. The food was delicious. I loved the chicken and couldn't put it down- until my husband insisted I taste the tri-tip. Soooo good, and I am not a steak person. They had a full carving station at our outdoor wedding venue which was super cool and brought a fancy feel to a family bbq setup. I insisted on mac and cheese which is not listed on their menu, but as an upgrade option. It was bomb. The chocolate chip cookies were great too. They also did a great job with drink service, moving the stations from wedding to reception as it was a hot day, appetizer, and cake cutting service too. Janelle is a doll and so helpful, she came out to the venue with me and eased all my bridezilla concerns, and Jon was great as well, when I would come by the restaurant with random questions. We decided to dine out for the first time in a while. 'Hungry Hunter' has been our go-to for great prime rib. We also like the table side salad bar. I ordered prime rib with steamed broccoli. The broccoli wasn't cooked and was over seasoned with celery seed. When I mentioned it to the manager he simply apologized but didn't really offer a solution or alternative. The ladies' room was dirty and all of the trash cans were overflowing with paper towels. Sadly the Hungry Hunter has succumbed to COVID like so many other once nice establishments. read more

Tonight made me really sad. I've been going to Hunter Steakhouse for over 20 years and I was so disappointed. I haven't been since pre-pandemic--I ordered the filet mignon, but received what must've been one of the thinnest, most worst cuts. Our waitress was wonderful and our first round of drinks was delicious--two tito's martinis. After we asked about the way the steak was cooked and what cut it was when it was brought out to us, they kindly offered to get us a new one. When the waitress and then manager go to the computer to put in our order we hear the bartender snickered, "baseball cut hahahaha" so we weren't sure what to expect. It was a friends birthday and she reserved a room for up to 20 people and the first let down happened to have been with the service! Our server was Melissa-she was such a sweet lady and really tried to attend to us as much as she could but serving a table of 20 and having to wait tables in the main restaurant was too much for anyone to handle. They were definitely understaffed-and it was on a Sunday. The hostess was delivering our plates and it was just hectic! Bottomless mimosas...if you're going to advertise them make sure you have enough bottles chilled and someone on hand to pour at all times. Sunday brunch means wildin' out so next time be prepared. I mean we did have a reservation specifically set for brunch time (hint hint)! The food...I ordered the tri tip breakfast burrito and wasn't satisfied at all! It was cold, bland, and all wrong. Maybe next time add salsa inside the burrito or I don't even know! Something just didn't work and it cost $14 for that! Really a poor quality steak house, do not expect anything fancy. The steak was fatty and not properly cooked, the sides not fresh and the service seriously lacking.
