This casual eatery was busy last Friday, with a special event happening right outside. I came by to grab some food to go, and the staff was friendly at the front counter. The wait was reasonable, and there was both indoor and outdoor seating available providing plenty of space to hang out before my order was ready. Ordered a patty melt and a chocolate milkshake. The shake was pretty standard, nothing too special, but chocolate's usually a winner in my book regardless of how it's served. The sandwich came with a side of fries. It was on the plain side, both the beef patty and the bread. It would have been better if it was grilled in butter, but altogether it wasn't bad. And the size was large enough for almost two meals, leftovers for sure. read more

We never been here but they had a night market festival close by it. We were here early yet we didn't eat any lunch. We tried this out. This place isn't bad at all. They had the special. I had the rib eye steak sandwhich. You can chose fries or tator tots. I chose tator tots. The lady there was friendly I felt. The food was not bad for the price. Hungry Hound is one of my favorite spots. They are always goo. Their hamburgers are always juicy and they make great milkshakes.

Located right by Santa Clara University, there are several tables for indoor seating and a few outside as well. Provolone Italian sausage philly (3/5): a bit too oily. The Italian sausage was very flavorful though. I wished there was a bit more cheese. Nonetheless it was pretty good. Service was quite slow. We had to wait about 20-30 minutes for our food. Tap to pay is accepted. Overall, Hungry Hound is alright. The price is a bit high for the service and food you get. read more

Was just there yesterday and prob going again today. Between 2 people we ordered 5 items and they were all fire We got the chili cheese dog, fish and chips, 3/4lb burger, Philly cheese steak, and Cali club. Portions were so big we shared half of each item and took the rest home. Everything tasted "healthy" so you might need to add your own salt. This review is long overdue. We absolutely love this place. As someone who grew up on the east coast, I miss these kind of places. I was lucky to find this one. This is a family owned and run business. The owners are amazing, the welcome and excellent service, genuine. This is a true definition of a hole in the wall family business that doesn't try to impress you with amenities. They impress you with their warmth, hospitality and large portions of delicious food. We've been coming here for close to a year now and everyone we've brought here has been a repeat customer as well. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. Hungry Hound is something of a Santa Clara icon, but I have hunch that is the result of a surfeit of undiscerning and desperate college students nearby rather than anything having to do with the quality of the establishment itself. Being only a few minutes drive from my workplace, my coworkers like to come here for lunch every month or so and therefore I've had a chance to try a number of different dishes, all of which land squarely in the category of adequate. The one saving grace is that they make a very solid BLT, which has become my go-to, and it's fortunately very reasonably priced unlike much of the rest of the menu. When we ate there this week I was disappointed to see that they still have not brought back indoor dining, with all ordering being done at the door and seating limited to a few tables and chairs spread out front of the restaurant. This isn't the result of any local health ordinances as every other restaurant in the area permits indoor dining. Pretty clearly it simply comes down to convenience for the owners at the expense of the patrons. One less table to wipe down at the cost of your customers shivering outside on an overcast November afternoon. One final complaint, if you want ranch to accompany your order of fries they will charge you 75¢ for a little cup on the side. I can't think of another restaurant that charges for ranch to dip your fries, and certainly not that much. I'm not sure if they are just coasting on their reputation and longevity, but they could certainly learn a thing or two about customer service. read more

Hungry Hound is a mom-and-pop Santa Clara staple that serves a wide fare of burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs/sandwiches, and more! It's located in the same plaza as Frozo's and Togo's. I've been coming here since I went to middle school locally and the owners have maintained the same standard of service, quality, and care that goes into their food for decades. I've recently started coming back now that I work in the area after college and it's been extremely nostalgic to grab a quick lunch here. I like to get the Patty Melt with Fries and it comes out to a pretty standard meal of around $15. There are a number of cheap sandwich and hotdog options below $10, if you're willing to do without their (golden and fresh!) fries. I also highly recommend coming early before the noon lunch rush and paying with cash as there's a credit card surcharge below $15! There's not really an option to leave a tip when paying with card, so I recommend bringing a few dollars cash to show your appreciation to the owners and their hard work. Hungry Hound has always been a popular local joint, and I hope it continues its legacy as a widely loved hole-in-the-wall spot just a turn off Lafayette and in close proximity to SCU. There was a lot of baked goods at 8pm and we bought a couple of them. We weren't impressed by the taste. It was dry and not very sweet. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. I don't review often but this deserves a review. I had a business lunch with a large vendor and we were looking for somewhere close. I drive by this place every day and don't really pay attention but know it's not pretty on the outside. What we found inside is a business similar to mine, a 2 person show that puts out products and services that have no competition at all. The big name chain a few doors down can't do this, it's been going downhill for years now. This is a owner that works and works hard. She's been doing this her whole life, starting at Dairy Queen down the street on El Camino in the late 70's I heard. Anyway, maybe it needs a makeover but the 3/4 pound cheeseburger with the works we got was the first time in my life we both agreed was hard to finish. It was excellent but the biggest hamburger we both agreed that we ever had and we are old. True charbroiled taste and all, it's the perfect hamburger. Even the sign for it outside was handmade. For the price of mickey d's we got stuffed! Burger taste was a solid 9 or 10 easy. Speed was right on at like 12 mins. Not a great place for a first date but perfect for a buddy that can eat. I got the bacon cheeseburger with fries. The food didn't come out super quick, but the wait wasn't too bad, definitely under ten minutes. The fries are medium thick cut, and they were cooked perfectly. There are two sizes of fries, and I got the smaller one; I could only eat about half of them before getting too full. The burger looked just like I like my burgers, but the beef flavor wasn't coming through at all. I got a lot of bacon and American cheese taste. The burger was well cooked, I just couldn't taste it. Hungry Hound is a small, casual diner. There are seven wooden tables with wooden benches indoors and a few tables in front. Only one indoor table has chairs with back support, so if a customer has back problems, then avoid this place or eat in front if weather permits. The place had a friendly feeling to it. The one think that bothered me is that it was hot indoors. So either Hungry Hound has no air-conditioning, or they keep the temperature turned down too low. I think outdoor the temperature was mid-80s (F). I ordered a hot dog and French fries, which were OK, nothing special. But the Hungry Hound had a special - shakes (several flavors) on sale so I ordered a Strawberry shake and it was excellent. Yum. I have not had one in about 10 year and this one got me to thinking maybe I will buy another one this summer. From what I could tell, the only parking available was on the street (no meters). Perhaps there is parking in back, but I do not know. The customer orders food at the cashier's and she calls your number to pick up the food. From what I could assess, I suspect that the customer should buss their own food by retuning plates etc. to the front counter or into a waste container. read more
