How did I find out about Hungry Ghost Bread you ask? The smell was wafting deliciously down the street as I was walking over to the car. We look up and see that there's a bakery and wander over out of curiosity. You can't see much from the window, but just enough to see a couple of people kneading dough and huge oven nearby. I'm not exaggerating that this probably is some of the best bread I've ever tasted. The only other time I had bread this good was in Europe. I had the battard but I'm sure its all good. Also tried their vegan cookie and the molasses cookie, all delicious. If you go to their website it seems you can volunteer or sign up for a fee to learn how to make bread here which I think is a great thing to learn especially as prices for goods rise. Worth a visit; absolutely addictive.

Hungry Ghost was recommended to me by a Northampton local. They warned me to make sure I got there early enough because it's a closed when sold-out situation. I got there before they opened and loved that I got to sit amongst an incredible wildflower garden just outside their door. I ordered a buttermilk biscuit, a french batard, and a country loaf. They were warm, had an impeccable crust and I couldn't wait to get some butter on them all. I do wish they had some instruction regarding care of keeping the bread especially since they are provided in paper bags. But I'd love some technique on how to ensure softness. They're missing a star from me, mainly since even being in line before opening there were still menu items that weren't available and it was requested I come back for them. I'm not local to the area so doing so is definitely trickier and felt unfortunate since I had made sure to not miss out on their product but still missed out after all. Here's to the next time. I here those cowboy cookies is where its at.

Cute little bakery with an adorable entrance, name & logo! Incredibly delicious chipotle chocolate cookie! Oh my word!! A bit sweeter than I'd like but holy tomato! Twas good! The staff seemed friendly & actually volunteered information for further investigation of their bakery at the farmer's market. Nice spot! It would be a favorite if I lived in Noho!

Walk in here and you'll drown in the smell of bread and freshly baked goodies. The chocolate chip cookies ($3 for a huuuuge one) and the coconut cookies ($1.25 for a small one) are TO DIE FOR. I've also had a loaf of challah bread which was delicious. Try their sourdough. YUM. And they sell pizza by the slice during their evening hours. *praise hand emojis* Basically, try everything here. Call in advance to secure a loaf or pop by early in the morning before they've sold much. Take advantage of the beautiful seating outside amongst their free growing gardens during the warmer months. Delightful food, beautiful breads, kind humans behind the counters. What's not to love?

My wife went to pick up a pizza and when she arrived the Hungry Ghost felt the pie that was prepared was not up to their standards. They had started another just before she arrived and offered her a slice while she waited. When she came home it was delicious. I am a carnivore, but would definitely recommend going with vegetables here to enjoy the sauce, cheese and crust to its full potential. That being said the pepperoni was great. I am truly excited to try more offerings from the Hungry Ghost bakery. read more

Excellent bread! I'm a sucker for the pastries as well, my favorite being the savories and the turnovers. I do wish those items were a bit cheaper, but I do understand the costs of baking from scratch using the best ingredients. As a Smith student I'm grateful for the occasional free loaf at the end of the night! I also love being able to see the bread being made just behind the counter. Great local bakery. read more

My new favorite pizza. Different than the norm. Real quality toppings. Real quality crust. Great texture, and it actually tastes like something. They take a lot of pride in what they do here, and you can feel it from the moment you walk in to the moment you eat. Also the best cookies on the planet. And you don't get better bread anywhere. It helps to know how completely immersed they are in community, and local and wider food security and environmental issues. Buying bread there feels like supporting business the way it should be done. My dad was a baker from the time he could walk (family business) to retirement. When he comes to Northampton he goes to HG and gets giddy about people who approach their craft and their business with such care and enthusiasm. Though he made white bread his whole life, he always wished that the public would wise up and demand real food: whole grain, sourdough, etc. He was just never able to break out of the business model he Inherited. I can see him appreciating people who are doing it as a matter of personsl commitment, and succeeding. I enjoy watching him admire something so much, and watching them admire him back. read more

My experience with this place has not been good. I've found their breads to be very hard (and they refuse "on principle" to slice them for you) and the one time I bought a chocolate chip cookie from them, I nearly broke my teeth on it. There are many better bakeries in Northampton, particularly Bread Euphoria and La Fiorentina. read more

Hungry ghost bread is a staple of my diet. They make some of the best bread I have ever tasted. I'm serious: I've been all over western Europe, including France. This bread is better. On Sunday, you can get the potato-thyme fougasse, which recently earned a spot as one of the best loaves in the country, and just consume the entire yeasty, crusty thing before getting home. Sometimes, I just sit on the ground and eat half a loaf by myself. Sometimes I make my friends go and get a loaf and stuff to spread on it and we have a picnic. We were in Northampton last weekend on the way to NH from MD to stop at WEBS yarn shop and my husband walked downtown to this bakery. He bought a loaf of multi-grain bread, a vegan chocolate cookie, and some chocolate walnut shortbread. What great bread and delicious treats! And, you'd never know that cookie is vegan. The bread, scones etc are all good - no question. It's the service. Every single one of the several times that I've been in, the young ladies at the register seem unfriendly to the point of being rude. Makes one feel very unwelcome and so I recommend any of the other fine and wonderful bread bakers in the area. Most will meet or exceed the quality of food and all will exceed the level of service. You will enjoy a much more pleasant experience elsewhere read more

This place is amazing!!! My friend and I actually arrived after they had already closed, but the door was open and we thought we take our chances and ask if we could still get any bread. Sure enough, the two women inside welcomed us right in! We didn't remember it was cash only, so on top of arriving after close, we didn't even have enough money to buy the bread. You might think these two would have been irritated or impatient...nope...not even slightly...in fact exactly the opposite!!! These women were so sweet!!! They tucked some bread in a bag and wouldn't take no for an answer, sending us out the door with a loaf of some amazing kamut bread! WOW! You don't see many stand up companies and people like this anymore! Needless to say, I cannot recommend them enough...not only are they amazing people that I will continue to support, but their bread is phenomenal!!! PLEASE support this company!!!! :) read more

I don't know if the person who took my call had a hearing problem, but they got EVERY element wrong ... from my card number, to my address (which I reiterated to the person TWICE, in my rather loud booming voice), to what we wanted on it, and he even didn't quite understand me saying "PIZZA" as opposed to a sub??? The delivery person went to the wrong address, and to top it off, the pizza itself was unusually thick: more the Greek style prevalent in New England (and which we hate) rather than the thinner ones they usually make. Never again.

It will be there one day and then not the next, so get it while you can. Or alternatively, you can email them and special order a flavor you love that you keep missing. I love that they do this! This review is for the Hungry Ghost's pizza only. They added pizza to their operation after completing their oven replacement and expansion. It is available only from 5-9 p.m. I purchased two pies today, their margherita and a special roasted garlic pie. The crust was ATROCIOUS. Dense. Gummy. Pale and undercooked. Quite possibly the worst pizza crust I have had in a long time, which is quite disappointing considering how exquisite their breads are. Another downside to their new pizza menu is that it is vegetarian. Not that prosciutto, or sausage, or pepperoni would have been much of an overall improvement, but it would have at least been small compensation for enduring the abomination of that crust. This is the second woodfired pizza place in this area that suffers from undercooked and flaccid dough. I know that woodfired ovens are trendy but if you cannot use the oven properly, you should NOT be selling your pizza. The crust should be well browned on the bottom and even blistered. I will continue to enjoy Hungry Ghost's breads and pastries which have never disappointed me. But I will not be trying their pizza again. As for the service notes posted here, I must also report that the crew of grungy hipsters and homely hippies that served me exhibited a uniformly disinterested and almost autistic attitude toward me and the other customers. read more

I live right across the street from Hungry Ghost. I have purchased many loaves there since they first opened. This is the real thing. I appreciate their total commitment to artisanship. They have built a beautiful garden in the front of the shop where people can gather. The garden is a display of medicinal plants. They educate people about grains and bread. They use local grains whenever possible. This is more than a bakery--it is a philosophy and a movement. Now, about the bread: Perfectly crusty, warm from the beehive oven. Inside is chewy with large holes--perfect for eating right out of the bag or sopping up sauces. Normally I avoid eating bread, but their bread is so well-made and natural I feel healthy and light after eating it. I am never tempted to binge on it, as it has so much texture (a lot of chewing is involved) and as I almost always get the whole grain loaf, it's lost of healthy fiber, vitamins, minerals and good old fashioned love. The bread is decent (not amazing as some here have written), but what really ruins it for me and my friends is the fact that the people working there are soooooo rude. They make you feel like they don't want you in there. No smiles, no thank you's, just frowns and elitist attitude. They have such an attitude problem there. Where did these people learn about customer service? In prison? I have been there a handful of times, and each time the people seem miserable and are very rude. It just ruins the experience of buying their bread. I know I am not alone in feeling this way as several of my friends have also experienced Hungry Ghost's elitist vibes. continues to disappoint. Their pizza dough is sublime, the sauce perfection and the ratio of cheese to both is perfect. But you will pay for a 16" pie and never get it. They have 4 times now served me pies that range from oval to square and never pass 13". Their cookies are hard but flavorful and equally inconsistent. The staff is, however, friendly and, when not demonstrably stoned, organized. I do love living down the street and enjoying the scent of baking bread, but the mouth never delivers what the nose promises. read more

An adorable little bakery off the main drag. The french batard is amazing, the staff is really friendly, and it has the most adorable name (which is what brought us here to begin with ). You can smell the aroma of fresh-baked and baking bread from outside the restaurant. The staff is friendly and seem to really enjoy what they do. Definitely recommend! read more

Possibly the best bread I've ever tasted. And I really, really like bread. Goes stale in about 30 seconds, but that isn't a problem, and it's impossible to be any other way (with real product); you want "fresh for a month," buy Wonder bread. read more
