The French Batard and Savory Fold breads are lovely. The Multigrain is covered in awful stalky crap, which looks charming, but I found totally inedible. I love the Cowboy Cookie more than almost anything, but the other cookies are so-so, and my husband and I prefer Woodstar's. We came into town to see our college kiddo...After long drive we offered to grab a pizza and meet her at her house. When she suggested from bakery...certain elements in the car were skeptical what a bakery could do with . Well, HGB does great things with ! I liked the handcut pepperoni...my only reqest is you add more. The crispy crust was WONDERFUL. Will be back for more! And so will my kiddo and her crew. Best wishes with the garden. I love the Hungry Ghost - the building itself, which sits on a small hilltop near Smith campus, is a wonderful place to stumble into on a cold winter day. The light inside is soft and warm and there is always flour in the air. The first time I went in I watched in wonder as an employee kneaded a giant human-sized blob of dough on a floured table and deftly slashed off hunks to be baked. The bakery is arranged around a huge bread oven that churns out the most delicious loaves of crusty, sourdough goodness that can be bought warm off the shelf. Their bread is the best I've ever had, whether you toast it, sop up soup with it, or tear off hunks and eat it straight out of the bag on the way home. They also sell a variety of baked goods, many vegan, that are always superb. The other day I bought a valentine lintzer cookie - two buttery hazlenut shortbread hearts with a layer of tart cherry jam inbetween. I tried to make it last but the cookie was reduced to a scattering of crumbs down my front within minutes. I never wanted it to end. Oh and the owners and staff are truly wonderful people. read more

I would move to Northampton to get bread from here regularly. The loaf I got was a wheat I had never heard of, but the employee described it as tasting like bread that was already buttered. She was spot on and it was absolutely delicious. I was hoping to get pizza but they don't have a place to eat inside during the winter (just a patio for the summer). Next time, for sure. read more

Small, no-frills, dedicated bakery that opened years ago in a cozy brick building that was formerly the office of a chiropractor. The breads are expertly crafted, fresh, crusty, tasty, sometimes including traditional or unusual ingredients like leeks or figs or currants. I love their philosophy, the sign handpainted by the couple's children that announces with a bold "YES!" that the they are open and the day's bread is for sale, and is taken down at whatever hour the bread is sold out, be it 2pm or 6pm. This place has really great breads, cookies, etc. We stopped by here on our way home from New Hampshire after reading all the amazing reviews, especially about their pizza. Unfortunately, we arrived too early to get the pizza. We stopped in and grabbed an "Egg in a Basket," a loaf of bread and a cookie. We ate the "Egg in a Basket" outside. It was basically an amazing biscuit baked with an egg inside and some cheese on top to cover the little pocket the egg was nested in. It was so good that we promptly ran back across the street and purchased two more loaves of bread and some scones. The scones were just as good as the little egg treat, but I felt that the breads were only alright. It is quite possible, though, that my opinion is influenced by the fact that the loaves my boyfriend picked weren't really my favorite types. I do look forward to trying again. read more

Hungry Ghost has some of the best bread in town, but don't go for the service -- it will be bizarre and weird -- but that's part of the fun. Any of the breads will be fantastic, and just about anything else you try will be also. The rugalach are excellent. read more

Super fantastic tasty bread. The cookies and pastries are great too. I've also been impressed by the fact that they tend to stay open through all kinds of weird New England weather situations. And the customer service is just fine, people. They carry quite a lot of good quality bread selection here! So far I have been sticking to the "bâtard". Pretty funny that they chose that name for thAt bread as it means "bastard" in French, yeah the insult! :-) The workers are really nice people, and really helpful if you don't know what to choose from, or need more description in taste on some of their other breads. Everybody knows their breads are phenomenal. I'm here to review their pizza; their vegan pizza, to be specific. In the past when I've tried to order it, they were always out of the cashew-based vegan 'cheeze'. Not last night! What a treat! Best pizza crust I've ever had! I initially ordered caramelized onions as a topping, but they were out, so I subbed fresh onions and olives. I also requested that they not slice the pizza. (I used to work in a restaurant, and have cross-contamination concerns.) Everybody was in a good mood when I picked it up, (maybe because they were closing in less than an hour) and I thanked them for not slicing the pizza, which I realize is an unusual request. Then one of the staff came up to the counter and apologized because he didn't read the ticket thoroughly and sliced it out of habit. He assured me that he cleans the slicer between each pizza, and they offered me a free cookie. With respect to the toppings, the onions were overpowered by the olives, and I would have preferred a little more tomato sauce, and a little less 'cheeze', but those 'complaints' are splitting hairs. read more

Friendly space and staff. Gave me a quick tour and was happy to answer a bunch of questions about both the bread and business. I came on a Friday and bought their caraway rye, french, and multigrain. My friend got their complete. It's what bread should be. Simple ingredients. Overnight levain fermentation. Strong bakes. These guys and gals are having fun and making an honest product. Amazing pizza but made to order so takes ~20 minutes and there's no where to sit inside. So just be sure to call in advance and pick up when it's ready. The pizza is very fresh and seems very organic, but after two take out orders, I'd say that there's nothing distinctive about their pizzas. The choices sound very unusual, but the pizzas taste bland. I found that it was difficult to distinguish between the different toppings. read more

Everything is delicious. The workers are friendly and prices are reasonable. I loved their Molasses cookies. The egg baked in a biscuit is amazing (very fresh egg). Hi, I go every week and buy cookies (hands down the best cookies I've ever eaten esp. ginger and any form of chocolate chip or cowboy). I bring them to my dance rehearsals and everyone is ecstatic. The bread is also incredibly delicious, every time I go. Savory folds are my favorite and I barely get back into the car before i rip into it's gooey interior and eat most of it. Forget about bringing it home. They now have pizza that you order, since they just reopened, and I am going to try it (maybe tonight!). As far as the people go, I've never had anyone be rude to me. They aren't super duper warm, but several are quite friendly and I always enjoy the time there smelling the bread baking and never had a bad experience. on my way there now, which is why I went online to get their number to order a pizza!!! read more

This review is for the pizza, not the bread. I'm really sad to say that the Hungry Ghost is not all I heard it was. I was very excited considering all the hype, hipster/farmers friends lauding its pizza. Coming from the city, I was looking forward to some hole-in-the-wall apprentice-style pizza. What I got made me second guess the Valley's ability to tell the difference between cool and good food. It lives up to its charm. It's dusty, hot and smells like delicious yeast and herbs. The staff is preoccupied and uninterested. And the pizza takes forever. All the ingredients that would point to one hell of a pie-- the wait and inconveniences and attitude would obviously fall away in exchange for a foodie's wet dream, right? I was utterly disappointed. The jalapeño pineapple pizza had 4 jalapeños and 7 pieces of pineapple on the whole pie, and they were drowning in cheese oil pockets. I counted them because I was in utter shock when I opened the box. Too much cheese- very unbalanced-- sour tomato sauce. The crust was great though. I don't get it--- are people saying it is great because ithey want it to be due to all the waiting and charm of being slightly ignored by staff? I wanted this to be something awesome, but it was a fail for me. Maybe it was a off night with a new pizza maker? Maybe they ran out of ingredients? Who knows. I'll stick to bread next time, if the place is open when I want some and I have cash in my pocket. read more

This would easily be a 5 star place. Anything I've eaten from here is out of this world good. But some, I say only some, of the staff is totally rude!! Don't ask the pizza dude for vegan slices, you'll get your head chopped off!! Being nice to customers keep them coming back, I won't be going here anymore. Loaves always burnt and the customer service could not be any worse! What a rude person.

We ventured to this part of Northampton yesterday in search of bread, cheese and wine for our picnic. The bread at this place really takes the prize but I have to say I found the people who sold me this bread to be disappointment. I'm really keen on the intimate exchange between me (the buyer) and person selling me the food (whether that person be a farmer, a chef, a bread maker, a barista, etc). The gal that waited on us could not recommend "her favorite bread", "a yummy bread to go with brie" or "any loaf she was excited about." I mean really, come on. It was good bread and we enjoyed the 8-grain thanks to a suggestion from our friends on yelp. But I can also get yummy bread from our local farmer's market. The key difference being that the person there who passes me the loaf will also share with me some experience or suggestion that I will appreciate. I value and support local when that local values and supports me. read more
