The pictures very much say it all ... somewhat traditional Italian style pastries (which are not my personal favorite) however, first & foremost the ones we got were fresh. Fresh makes all the difference in the world. I hate bakeries that over produce and someone (not moi) ends up getting the dry end of the stick (as opposed to the short). First time, and last! Bought 2 chocolate Napoleones about 5 minutes before closing time, which now I'm sorry I didn't get there 5 minutes later and they'd be closed. Both were so dry and tasted horrible. Ended up trying 2 bites, with the 2nd bite went in the sink. The rest of the 1st one and the 2nd one went in the trash!.. I see now all the 1 star reviews and should have looked them up way before I went there, how they have a few 5 star , I cant figure out for the life of me how??, either there friends or family, or different staff on those days, smh. read more

I have always liked this bakery, however today I was taken aback. I bought some pastry and a folar . I requested it be sliced and was shocked looking at the receipt. They charge an extra thirty cents to slice the bread . Besides the fact I paid over thirty dollars for a small load and six custard cups . They also charge more if you use a card . Very nice traditional Portuguese bakery offering authentic breads, rolls, pies, cakes and pastries and if you call before the weekend you can special order Malasadas (a yeast type donut from the Asores) which is similar to filhós from mainland Portugal. I love old world pastries simply because they are not sickeningly sweet like their American cousins. Give this place a try, you'll be happy you did. read more

These were the WORST, DRYEST, TASTELESS pastries I have ever encountered. They looked lovely in the box, so anticipation was high, but starting with a Bismarck pastry which is traditionally made with raspberry filling and creme, we got a stale, and by stale, I mean inedible a hard cream puff like pastry that had a strawberry filling which was actually flavorless. How this " bakery" can succeed in making pastries with no taste is a real skill. Next up a cannoli , soggy and tasteless. The 3 danish: blueberry cheese and 1 what one can only guess as perhaps being pineapple filling. It was sweet but tasted like goo, tasteless goop. The fillings on the stale danish ( at least a day old) were pathetic. The blueberries were a scant teaspoon of small blueberries that managed not to taste like blueberries. They appeared canned and rinsed, so the flavor was gone. The cheese, again had no flavor whatsoever and it was barely a thin layer the amount of a scant teaspoon, icing was nil. The Peach Pie was the biggest disappointment by far. Canned diced peaches with a thickening agent added that you could choke on. The crust however was tasty. We had several friends taste this total waste of money and agreed these were actually the worst bakery items they had ever had. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Save your money and go elsewhere -- anywhere but Ludlow Central Bakery. The killer is they print FRESH BAKED DAILY all over their box labels. Well, we beg to differ these were purchased on a Saturday before noon. These were stale and should have. Been discarded by the owner and NOT sold. Never again, ever!!!! If you are looking for Portuguese pastries in the Springfield area, then Ludlow Bakery is the place to go. They have delicious pasteis de nata, as well as incredible Portuguese rolls and bread. The staff is always polite, and I love to speak to them in Portuguese. The other nice part about this bakery is that they provide catering for events and are reasonably priced. The only critique I have is a wish, and my wish is that they would make fresh sweet bread daily instead of having them prepackaged. I've been going to this bakery since I was a kid! For all those that have given a negative review is because they ordered bakery items that you can get at the local grocery store. (Big Y). You need to order the authentic pastries of Portugal. Stick to the pastes nata and pastes de feijao. These are custard cups which is nothing like you have ever tasted. Then there is the feijao which are sweet, crunchy and the top is crispy and the inside is light with a flavor that can not be explained. They also have coconut cups, but they are not as sweet as a macaroon. Great with a cup of coffee. The breads are all amazing with soft inside with the crunchier the crust you have ever had. Eat the pao sinteo ( pronounced seen Tay oh) which is a wheat bread with a flavor all its own, hearty and rustic. The cakes are moist, the filled horns are not as sweet as the store bought and don't have that crisco taste that store bought has. Enjoy the Portuguese pastry not the dang cookies. Portuguese pastries are not known for extreme sweet pastries. Always go there first when I visit. The bakery is very busy and will run out of certain items because of popularity and the custard cups takes 2 days to make. Morning is the best time to shop. I have never been mistreated here but for those of you who don't know this little town every one knows who live there and regular customers. They know this place is busy and they need to work fast, be patient these girls have been there since 4am. Love this place read more

I agree with Nancy C. Pastes de nata are the best you can buy. Their breads are also very good. Try using their rolls for hamburgers. You will never go back to the 'plastic' supermarket ones. OK, so some of the youngsters who sometimes work there and maybe speak little English can be a little offhand, but this place is a gem, and the 'normal' staff are really kind. On weekends (I think) they sell a bread with chorizo in it. Good, if less good for the waistline. Just choose the traditional fair and enjoy it. read more

I've been coming here for years as they have excellent bread. I especially like the cinnamon nut bread. Delicious when toasted with butter. I have one complaint, however. I picked up some bread last week for a dinner I was making for my brother's birthday. He's not into big, heavy birthday cake so I decided to take home one of their raspberry cake rolls to serve with coffee after dinner. It looked pretty tasty and a good alternative to a heavy cake. I moved to Ludlow 3 yrs ago and was introduced to this gem!! I have tried so many different things that they have to offer I can't say a bad thing about one. I am here's to tell you to try a Kings cake!! (A sweet bread with fruit,nuts, and raisins. Decorated beautifully.) Pick one up for a party and watch as every one falls in love!! Ok, first off Ludlow Central Bakery has some great breads and pastries. The Portuguese cornbread (NOTHING like American cornbread), the Portuguese rolls, and the pastries are all great. My particular favorite are the Sonios (not sure I spelled it right, but they are a fried dough with cinnamon and sugar on them), they are incredible when they are fresh cooked. My concern about this place is that the service can be HORRIBLE. I have gone in and the woman behind the counter wanted nothing to do with me. She was speaking in Portuguese to customers behind me in line and was taking their orders. Finally when no one was left but me she attempted to take my order but I don't speak Portuguese. She acted mad and got a young girl to take my order. I spoke to my friend (who is Portuguese and goes there often) and he said that is typical. I have been back since and when the younger English speaking waitresses are there I have had no issues. read more

They make these delicious custard cups with a flaky crust called Pasteis de nata, that taste just as good as the ones I had at the bakery in Lisbon that is famous for making them. They also have lots of other great Portuguese specialty items and the standard items that you would expect a bakery to have. Everything that we tried was delicious and fresh. Don't buy cakes from this bakery because you'll get a old cake that has been frozen defrosted and frozen and defrosted a few times. I have not been to this bakery in many years for this reason. I bought what looked like a beautiful birthday cake for my young daughter, because I forgot to order one in advance. When I served it to my guests they took a bite made a face and didn't go back for more. My turn to try the cake; I couldn't believe how old it was. I called the bakery and the owner told me, very rudely, that it had been made that morning. I told her that it was very old and nobody was eating it. She kept arguing with me and I told her "I'm bringing the rest of the cake for you to see and I want my money back". When I got to the bakery, she said "so where is the rest of the cake?" I told her, do you want me to go home and get rest from the trash? because that's where it is. The whole time she was very rude and argumentative and after I would not leave without the money, she finally gave me the money back. Like I said, never again I entered that bakery because they are rude and liars. I go to Chmura's bakery now where so far they treat me with respect and a smile. read more
