Sausage Egg and Cheese on a ciabatta roll, an apple fritter, raspberry muffin top with cream cheese over looking fern valley farm.
    Paul Francis M.

I will start by saying Rice Fruit Farm is a well established business. Delicious food, variety of ice cream, and a place Wilbraham can call home. I would not deter anyone from coming here for all of the above reasons and then some. Where I have a problem now is the communication from employees to customers about apple picking. So anyone reading this interested in apple picking can be properly informed. 2017 Rice Fruit Farm and Fern Valley Farms worked together in bringing people up to the farm for apple picking. Customers went inside to buy bags and FVF brought them up in the wagons. In the fall of 2020 when Covid changed the world the thought of having customers get in a wagon just couldn't happen. So FVF invited customers to drive up and park up here at the farm and has been this way ever since. Since then I have herd rumors that employees are telling customers there is no apple picking. They are not wrong, they no longer offer apple picking other than what they sell in store. But this brings us to today. After I overheard a group of customers yesterday saying RFF is still telling customers there is no apple picking I decided to hear it with my own ears. I ordered a muffin top and when I was cashing out I asked about apple picking. The response I got was "We are not doing apple picking this year, we are understaffed." That was all I needed to hear. I was hopeful she would have directed me across the street but I did not hold my breath. Not sure where the disconnect is. When customers of FVF ask us where to get an ice cream we direct them down to RFF. That is not only good business but it's supporting our local community and what the customer wants. With all that being said, if you are interested in picking apples, buying some fall pumpkins, listening to live music while enjoying food from Ebenezer's Bar & Grill and beverages from Fieldcrest Brewery overlooking the breathtaking Pioneer Valley follow the signs across the street in Rices overflow parking and join us up here at Fern Valley Farms. Cheers!

A wonderful throw back from the past! I've been here a few times I love it. The bakery items are to die for. Everything made in the facility. What a novelty to have a place like this still existing. They offer sandwiches and bagels with coffee and tea - iced and hot selections. My mocha coffee iced was wonderful. My grilled cheese was Classic and worth the money. I also bought as much as I could pastries and pies. Since I don't live near the area , I definitely want to make sure I have enough to bring home. Definitely, check it out! Great for the family.

    Thank goodness we missed lunch!

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon ride to shake-off the dreaded "COVID Cabin Craziness" my wife and I wandered through sections of Middle Massachusetts (Carlton, Sturbridge, Fiskdale, Palmer, and Wilbraham). As late afternoon approached, our bellies were grouchy. Choices seen along our unplanned route just didn't fit the bill; they were either closed or appeared not meet our stringent safety protocol. Forging on, South by Southwest, we found ourselves in Wilbraham. Quaint Main Street, but again doubt brewing, until we passed by Rice Fruit Farm, hmmm rumbled, as we passed. A couple of streets later, we came to our senses, and engaged a K-Turn. Pulling up the former Farm Barn & Yard looked like the right combination of safe distancing, outdoor tables, a warm fire pit, fall friendly decor, baked goods, and Homemade ICE CREAM! The place was full of life, kids eating ice cream cones, the Barn transformed to a Gift Shop & Kitchen/Bakery. Even a petting area (for now best to just observe and don't touch). Mama went inside to scope out the scene while the Mr Mister (the dog) and I went to stretch our legs. My request to Mama, "I'll take anything that looks good and maybe a coffee." Mr. Mister and I had time to visit the goat pen, say Hi, and then a couple of brightly painted Adirondack chairs facing the fire pit. Shortly afterwards, Mama emerged with a couple of drinks and a bag containing two warm fresh made Botta Bing sandwiches and PB Surprise cookies!" ATTA GURL MAMA! The Botta Bings were delicious; gooey egg, salami, cheese, tomato, and a pesto sauce. Messy, oh ya. Now I mentioned Ice Cream? I'm a hyped up Ice-Cream-a-holic and always have room to spare, so Cowabunga! Homemade, excellent mixes, and super friendly service. For the three of us (two humans & mutt), two double scoops in cones, and a Doggie Sundae for this Highness. Yup, special made Pup Sundaes. Softserve and a whole or crushed dog cookie! Sorry no time for pictures of our cones. Trust me, the ice cream alone is worth the trip. However, all the rest made for a pleasant time...

Whenever I'm in the area this is a must stop. One of the best breakfast sandwiches around. Staff is very friendly and even know some customers by name. I'm typically in the area during the fall and get lucky enough for their apple cider and cider donuts. There's plenty of place to sit down and enjoy your breakfast both inside and out. It's also a great place to get some work done as they have wifi available. There's even a freezer section if you want to take some frozen food home. Don't think twice about this place, just go!

It's a nice small farm store. I went there mainly for ice cream. One disappointing thing is that they only allow 2 flavors even in large cup. First one, I went for black raspberry and pistachio, both of which were decent flavors. Second one I ordered a monkey business and purple cow. I got the monkey business, which ended up my favorite flavor. Instead of purple cow I got some other flavor with pretzel, which was not my favorite. I would say their muffin tops were the best. I went for a blueberry one and a raspberry one with cheese, both of which were good.

It's time for an update!…read more I want to start by saying if you have yet to come what are you waiting for?! But in all seriousness we have done a lot up here since I put the farm on the map. Lets start with our new kitchen! We have built a beautiful kitchen which has helped serve some delicious burgers, hotdogs, chicken tenders, fries & grilled cheese for you to munch on. While waiting for your order you can walk to the other side of the building to grab a craft beer from Fieldcrest Brewing Company. We do not yet sell ice cream but the plan is to have it in 2023! We do sell cider donuts and s'mores in our country store to help with that sugar craving. We have a stage for our live music! Starting mid July we start our summer concert series which has been a huge hit with the community. I personally love seeing our field covered with lawn chairs and smiles every weekend. We provide lots of games for the kids such as sport balls, tumbling towers, and disc golf while you are enjoying the tunes of your favorite musicians! And when you need a break you can take a tractor ride around the farm! During the week we have provide sunset yoga as well as farmers markets! What better way to enjoy the views than supporting your local community vendors and or taking in some relaxing yoga with friends and family. We still have all your favorite apples for picking AND we planted 250 more trees with plans this fall to plant even more! This will help us prolong our season to Columbus Day Weekend a few years from now. Please do not climb on the trees. We do provide apple pickers for those hard to reach apples. Any broken branches could increase the risk of disease and or kill the tree. The farm has now also turned into a venue for events! We have had a few weddings now this year, including Dan and his new wife Brooke! So if you are looking for a wedding venue why not here! Please scroll through the many pictures to see some of their pictures for a visual. Some things you may notice when coming up, we no longer have the pumpkin patch and the cows have been sold. We have butchered two of the cows so if you are looking for some grass fed beef just find Dan or myself and we'll let you know what we have. A couple reminders: Please drive slow. This helps keep the dust at a minimal, our neighbors will appreciate it, and with all the children running around we want to keep everyone safe. We do not allow outside food and alcohol beverages. Please leave your coolers at home. We are a pet friendly farm! Please pick up after your furry friends after they do their business. This is a farm so you will come across bees also enjoying the apple. Look before you step when picking apples. Could easily step on a fallen apple and roll an ankle. We do encourage exploration! The view from the upper hill is amazing and we recommend taking a walk to enjoy the scenery. And without saying please pick up after yourself, a clean farm is a happy farm. Thank you in advance for coming. We look forward to making Fern Valley Farms a destination for you to come and enjoy with friends and family for years to come! The problem I have with this location in particular is that it's very hit or miss. There's like no in-between. I've gone in and things have been fully stocked, and great customer service by workers, but then other times I've gone in and they're selling rotting fruit/veg, lots of empty shelves and I've left having not gotten anything. What really prompted me to review this place though was the fact that we just got over a bad snowstorm, a lot of people were looking to replenish their food items and there was so much snow and ice on the parking lot. I saw older one's holding on to dear life by the side of their cars to try not to fall on the pavement. That to me is completely unacceptable. Everyone here knew days in advance a storm was coming, why didn't they prepare the inside/out of the store? and if you're going to open to the general public after a storm, you're not gonna plow the parking lot? Yet other stores nearby didn't have this issue, their streets were plowed and salted. Really concerning that they're not taking safety into consideration.

I saw the corporate justification in another review, (the difference between Fresh Acres and Big Y being smaller and smaller), and it rings hollow. They didn't really have to plaster their brand all over the store, but that's their prerogative. I do feel like there has been a change in customer service since the transition, as though the employees now feel like they too are part of a faceless corporation and not some well-supplied local neighborhood grocery story. Case-in-point, The Umbrella Factory in Naples, ME (https://yelp.to/DO9Xzfl7rtb). They are locally owned but supplied by Hannaford, so they still have the small town feel while also being supported by a big grocery chain. Needlessly, Big Y found a way to suck the life out a cozy little spot. All of this aside, I love the smallish, local feel of Fresh Acres; it's nice not having to deal with the big supermarkets all the time!
