Well I haven't left a review on any places in a while .. but for this place .. I have time today .. so it's local . Has decently price lunch specials .. never to over the top Great.. I do love hot and sour soup .. but theirs taste like dirty bath water .. weird after taste .. well the real reason for this review is the lil lady in the front .. on the phone .. wherever she may be at the time .. but its her .. I called based off of the menu online .. come to find out the prices have changed and due to my questions about that . She became rude and confused by my questions but part of me thinks she has to get this all The time ..it's a online menu ..Simply by how offended she was ....anyway . I was so shocked by her responses but I was hungry so I still went though still ordering and she kindly slammed the phone down ..once I hung up .. within 30 seconds my mind and my wallet said wait .. screw this . Definitely the best Chinese Takeout in Cranford. The other 2 places doesn't hold a candle. The food is cooked well and taste fresh. The lunch special is definitely worth it compared to the dinner. I feel like the extra $4 for the dinner prices isn't much more than the lunch. read more

The food is deplorable ... the young ladies there are borderline irate. I recently placed an order and they canceled without any notice. I went in to pick up the order and got the food and they acted as if they didn't know what I just ordered... I would have left but was starving. I honestly think they tampered with the order ! Solid Chinese takeout place. Some dishes are about a dollar more expensive than at other places, but it's a good alternative. Dragon Meets Phoenix ($11.55): Sounds like a cheap-production porno, but it's actually butterflied shrimp alongside Gen. Tso's Chicken. If you like dishes such as sweet and sour shrimp and orange chicken, this is for you. The shrimp was a bit crispy, while the chicken were large chunks. It comes with rice on the side. Wonton Soup ($3.40): Cheap and filling--perfect for those late nights after work or night classes. It's served piping hot with a lot of large pork-stuffed wontons. These are the same wontons they use for their steamed wontons appetizer. At $3.40, you will be warm and full. Shrimp Chop Suey ($8.95): It's very "soupy" because of all the corn starch they used, but taste wise, it's alright. I found the vegetables a bit soggy, though, since they are immersed in the starchy sauce/gravy. The shrimp was cooked just right. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce ($10.75): It's basically shrimp in a similar starchy sauce/gravy. There was plenty of shrimp that was cooked just right along with a few vegetables thrown in. It's not salty--for me at least--so no soy sauce or salt is needed. It comes with rice as well. Yangchow Fried Rice ($8.75): Probably the only fried rice I'm fond of. The problem is, this lacks a bit in flavor. The YC Fried Rice I'm used to has a yellowish color and has plenty of egg, char siu, scallions, and more. This had pieces of imitation crab meat and a few greens, but that was all. Then again, it's Chinese take out. The food is typically ready in about 25 to 35 minutes, sometimes quicker if there aren't that many customers or phone orders. read more

I've ordered from this place quite frequently over the course of about 5 years. It's a shame I decide to give a review after feeling jilted but so is the way of life. I've constantly ordered delivery for my family as I no longer eat Chinese food and the service along with the food has been adequate...just adequate- 2 stars the most. But today they deserve one star for their service. I ordered 2 lunch specials which had a choice of coming with an egg roll or a soda. When I placed the order, I asked for an egg roll for each lunch special but instead the lunch specials came with sodas. My children don't drink soda so I was especially irritated about it as the sodas will only go in the garbage. I called to let them know and this is how the conversation went: Me: Hi! I called previously to order 2 lunch specials. Hunan Wok: Yes we delivered already. Me: Yes, I know but you gave me sodas and I asked for egg rolls. Hunan Wok: No, you didn't ask for anything. Me: Yes I did maybe you didn't hear me. Hunan Wok: No you didn't. You asked for lunch specials and no egg rolls so we gave you soda. Me: No I did ask for sodas. If you didn't hear me or you didn't know then you should have asked me what I wanted. Hunan Wok: No, we never ask. We just give soda when you no say nothing and YOU no say nothing. But if you want, you can come get. Me: Huh? Are you kidding me? I know what I asked for. I did ask for egg rolls, you didn't hear me. That's fine but don't you dare tell me that I said nothing. That's not how it works. How it works...is...you apologize; even if you THINK I'm wrong!!! AND then you offer an exchange. What kind of business are you running? Unreliable, hard to deal with them because they don't appear to understand English well or their phone may be cheap and unreliable because you often have to yell into the phone to make yourself understood. Ordered food, was told an hour wait, 1.5 hours later, only half the order was delivered. Manager told me he would deliver missing food free in half an hour. 1 hour later, no food. Good prices and a fairly long menu make this a decent option for Chinese take-out in Maplewood. We got a variety of vegetarian items; these included scallion pancakes, which, we've found, aren't so common around here. The food was ready quickly. The General Tso's tofu and bean curd Szechuan style were too similar--and definitely too fried--for my liking. In fairness, they probably would not have been as similar if we hadn't requested the former to be mild. The sesame noodle appetizer was heavy and good. It was not at all what we were picturing, which was more like a light cellophane noodle salad. Instead, it was a vast plate of thick noodles in a salty, tangy, nut butter sauce. This would have been enough for a meal in its own right, and was a great deal. Note that the hot and sour soup contains pork. They never said it didn't, and we didn't ask, so I'm not complaining. I have ordered from Hunan many times. My son and our family used to be huge fans of this restaurant. However, on 8/19/18 I called to place our usual order and was met with the rudest snottiest person EVER! After she took on this tone, I told her to cancel my order, grabbed my keys and went up to said restaurant. I walked up to the counter where a young girl was working and asked if she was the woman I spoke to on the phone. She played dumb for a few seconds. I asked to speak to the owner. She said she was in charge but the owner was, Nicole. She apologized sarcastically and ended it with a "Can I get you a soup?" and smiled like she had said something very clever. I said I'd like the speak to the owner. She took a call coming in and I waited. She finished the call and I said I would like some way to speak to the owner. She (after consulting with another employee and taking five more minutes) wrote down a name Nicole, a number (which I don't believe is Nicole's) and said "There you go... you can call my mother at this number" and flashed me a smile. Needless to say, I will be talking to Nicole, but until her "daughter" learns simple customer service (even under stressful conditions)... I'll be taking my appetite and money elsewhere! I will be contacting "Nicole", but until Hunan feels the need to rectify this situation...this review will stand. read more

This is one of those finds you wish you found. Hunan Wok in the Hilton area of Maplewood is awesome. It looks like a hole in the wall and has been there forever. At some point - maybe about five years ago (?) the staff changed. They are younger, hipper, more helpful and better communicators. The actual food is fresh, succulent and delicious. My family's favorite item on the menu are the fried pork dumplings. Other favorites have been: Singapore Noodles, Buddha's Delight ; Seafood Delight; the spare Rib tips, the spare ribs, Mixed Vegetables in Brown Sauce; General Sao's Chicken, Chicken and Broccoli in Garlic Sauce, Egg Foo Young, Scallion Pancakes, the fried wings, egg rolls and the cold sesame noodles. The delivery guys are super fast. On rare occasion they forget stuff but they always make up for it and bring the missing stuff. Sometimes we order it for our guests and they love it. If you want chop sticks, ask a couple of times very deliberately. You have to ask for fortune cookies...I think those are going out of style. read more

And first the Boneless ribs were great. They were not thin and crispy. They were thick and meaty. The garlic sauce on the city was great also. Egg foo young came with the sauce on the side.
