Idk what type of sauce they use for it, but I don't care for it at all. It's kinda tangy, a tab bit sweet, and it was too much of it. To each its own, but this wasn't for me. I'm so bummed as I type this, as I'd hoped this place would be my go-to Chinese restaurant. It won't be. The positive? It's a drive-thru with fast, courteous service and the food is piping hot. It's also cheap. The negative? You get what you paid for. I ordered Sa Cha Style with Shrimp. It was flavorless. And they don't give you a separate container of rice. They dump the entree on top with all of the sauce. My rice was sopping wet with it and that ruined the rice. Too much sauce with no flavor is not a good combo. I ended up dumping Sriracha Sauce on it to add flavor and picked out the shrimp and veggies, leaving the rice to its death by drowning. The eggroll was standard but the egg drop soup was bland. Great quick Chinese takeout spot. Super nice that they have a drive thru and everything is very cheaply priced. The drive thru line look really long, but it took less than 10 mins to get my food. The dumplings were $5 and each soup was a little less than $2. The dumplings were really good, although they were cold once I got home, but the sauce with them is incredible!! You also get 12 dumplings in one order which is very generous. The egg drop soup was my favorite soup. I would put the hot and sour soup in 2nd place, and wonton soup in 3rd place. Everything seemed fresh for Chinese food and the proportions given are large--one entree is probably big enough for two people. The general "Joe" chicken is actually spicy too, which was a first for us. It's also equal proportions of meat and rice compared with other places being mostly rice. We've lived here over four years and regret only now discovering HunanExpress. We ordered online and used the drive through so I didn't notice if they are seating inside. We got Hunan tofu over fried rice and LoMein with tofu. Both dishes were quite similar, the biggest difference being one was over rice and one over LoMein noodles. They both were full of vegetables and somewhat milder in spice than I anticipated so I was glad I'd asked for hot chili oil on the side. Each entree was enough for two meals and under $7 each. The small cup of hot sour soup was also mild, but flavorful. All dishes were piping hot so ready to eat when we got home. We'll definitely be picking up dinner here again, especially since eating out now during the pandemic is proving difficult. read more

Omg I cannot stressed enough on how amazing their lomein is. It was out of the world. It made me feel whole and all the wonderful feelings I haven't felt in a long time. My friends and I ordered it in the middle of the night bcuz we were drunk af and nothing else was opened. BEST DECISION EVER. The place itself is a little shady. East Nashville is disappointingly devoid of Chinese food so Hunan Express became my first choice by default. It is definitely not a bad choice however. I usually opt for the drive-through option. The menu is simple and affordable (all items are just under 5 bucks) and the portions are generous. Be careful when you get your order because they apparently have some sort of kitchen device that makes the food the temperature of fresh lava, but your patience will be duly rewarded. Worst Chinese food I've ever had hands down. My buddies and I were visiting our good friend in Nashville this past weekend and one night someone suggested they were craving Chinese. I looked through a few options and found Hunan express, which we jokingly said was a distant cousin business we have in our area named Hunan Kitchen. A huge red flag should have been a common dish in every Chinese place called General tso chicken but at Hunan express they have General Joe chicken, big mistake. It was diced and had a weird glaze instead of that classic taste and size. The wonton soup was bright orange like someone dumped orange Gatorade in the broth and tasted dreadful. Ordered about 80 dollars worth of food and everything we tried was horrendous and was left unfinished. At Hunan, you can dine in or hit the drive-through, and your wait will probably never be over five minutes. Hunan has the typical menu items you'd expect from an inexpensive Chinese joint: sweet and sour chicken, several varieties of lo mein, General Tso's chicken (which is listed on their menu as General Joe's chicken), and more. The food is pretty tasty, but it certainly isn't the best I've ever had. My friend and I got the sweet and sour chicken and the pineapple chicken, and we were brought two identical plates with different small containers of sauce. The staff at Hunan is pretty friendly, and the place looks like it probably used to be a Long John Silver's or Wendy's. There is plenty of room (and several booths) to dine in with your friends, but the speedy service and drive-through make it ideal for carry out. I tried this based on all the great reviews... I ordered fried rice and the cheese wontons. The wontons were stale, which is strange since they're deep fried. The Vegetable Lo Mein was good, loaded with veggies in a rich sauce and soft noodles. The Sesame Chicken was good but a little to sweet for my taste. The Cream Cheese wonton were just ok, wish they were crab wonton. It's pretty darn good for the price and I don't think I've ever had Chinese food so hot and fresh.
