My car battery died after about 10 minutes of driving. I called customer service and they transferred me to roadside assistance. After 20-30 rings, I was disconnected. I called customer service again and was transferred to roadside assistance again; I waited for 10 minutes and was told someone could jump start my car in 45-60 minutes. This was not an acceptable "solution": who would trust the battery after all of that? So I called customer service back, asked for a supervisor and then learned I was talking to the supervisor of their answering service. He was very kind and said he would do his best to have someone call me. I then emailed Hui and someone called me as I was getting into the Uber that will salvage the rest of my afternoon. The Hui person was very nice and they refunded my money, so I would summarize my experience as follows: 1. People - very nice and kind. 2. Company - terrible; they should never allow someone to be completely abandoned with no alternatives. A more together company would be equipped to provide a replacement vehicle. Problems can happen, but it is how you equip your staff to solve them that counts. I give the nice staff an A for kindness and the company a 0 for service. 1 star is a generous rating. read more

We used HUI a few times on our last trip. First one was rough.. if your Bluetooth connection / pairing is interrupted for some reason you will have issues. I could not lock or unlock the car and thought I had to have the car towed back to the hotel, stressful situation since you're time-bound. After re-trying to lock/unlock for a long time I re-started the app and was able to unlock the car again (whew!). Tip 1: Plan time for traffic and parking the car since you cannot end the trip until you're parked back in the garage + GPS registers your location + everything is out of the car before locking. Tip 2: Have multiple phones with the app installed. If one phone doesn't work, try the other phone to lock/unlock (same login credentials). Tip 3: Turn off your Wi-Fi if you see an error that you're too far from your car. There's a sticker on some car windows about this but our first car didn't have a troubleshooting sticker. Wi-Fi may try to change your location which could mess with the app (which tries to ensure you're near the car). We did fill up gas once, the process seemed OK. We filled up at an Aloha gas station, I think the only restriction is no Costco/Sams gas stations. You need to enter ODO reading and the user # on the card. $25 limit. I think the convenience of HUI is the standout feature. Lots of pickup spots, no parking fees [and guaranteed parking space], flexible rental times, free gas, no additional insurance. There is a reliance on the HUI app so make sure your phone is charged (or multiple phones are charged and have the app installed). It's a bit stressful when the car doesn't lock/unlock but we eventually got it to work. Unfortunately after-hours you'll be sent to voice-mail or roadside assistance which won't help you with any app issues. I think hard-reset of your app should help. read more

I tried to reserve a car that we needed for the next day. After going through the process of reserving a car, Hui asked for my driver information again and I had to start the process all over again. I then got an error message saying they couldn't verify my driving record? I had set this up months ago and now they cannot verify my driving information? I called their customer service and was told nothing could be done till the next day?! I'm now stuck without being able to get a car! Never using Hui again! read more

As a repeat customer I am beside myself with what happened during my last rental experience. On one of the last days of my rental someone broke into the rear window on the passenger side. Myself and my friend were both victims of theft in this situation as whoever broke in stole what they could from the car. We immediately filed a police report and attempted to contact customer support from HUI, although it took us almost 20 minutes until we could reach HUI to tell them the situation and ask for next steps. I spent almost an hour cleaning the glass out of the car. Through out the course of multiple conversations with HUI that day not once did anyone mention what I would be charged automatically for this crime I fell victim to. They told me twice they would send me an estimate from the shop for how much the window replacement would cost. I woke up the next morning and $1000 was withdrawn from my account! My stomach literally dropped. To put it simply I don't have that kind of money at the moment so on top of hours and hours of dealing with police reports, HUI, and dealing with the fact that we were burglarized - I now have to deal with having essentially no money in my account right now. The least they could have done was warn me and/or remind me on the phone of this absurd policy. On top of that they had to switch out the car and start a new reservation with another vehicle and they double charged me for that new reservation but it wasn't until I brought it to their attention that they refunded me. I enjoyed hui previously to this experience but I won't be using them ever again. I fell victim to a crime and to damage to the car that I literally had nothing to do with. read more

BUT what they don't clearly state is you definitely need to take a video of the entire car otherwise your at fault for damages. We were charged $1000US for scratches on the vehicle we didn't do. But as we have only photos we cant prove that... and even if we did, we tried contacting them about the procedure of this etc and they have never returned our calls about it. This worked out excellent for me while I was in Hawaii as there was a rental spot close to my hotel and I didn't want to rent a car my entire stay. Instead I downloaded the app and just used Hui for the periods of time that I wanted. I made sure I reserved for plenty of time to make sure I could get back to the spot. I didn't want to get charged over. The car had a few dings on it from previous trips but it was clean on the inside and the app unlocked the doors and started the car without fail (just had to give it a minute). I did have to fill up the car pretty soon after I got it but the process was easy. If Hui was an option again when traveling, I would absolutely use it. read more

Decided to book a car for a day trip last minute and decided to use Hui where it's a flat fee for everything (rather than worry about cleaning, topping off gas, etc). Not the cheapest you could get but for rental but I didn't mind for that convenience, as long as the car was returned with at least 1/4th gas tank full. I had a pretty good experience. Authentication was within a day and I booked a car ~1-2 days in advance for a car relatively close in terms of distance from my Waikiki hotel. The fleet of cars seem relatively new - I chose a 2021 RAV4 it comes with apple CarPlay (bring your own USB cable!) which was handy for navigation. Your phone is the key, using a combination of Bluetooth,volume, internet to unlock/lock the car. The gas card was missing, but I called the support number and they can reimburse gas if needed (make sure to have a receipt for that request). Overall a positive service that I'd recommend for anyone looking for rental cars for a few hours or even days. read more

I used to LOVE Hui Car Service, but most recent experience has changed my mind. They had improved app, and added more locations. Those are good. Mobile phone charging cords are gone, and often your rental begins with just a quarter tank full. The day I rented was a worst road condition, lightning and pouring rain, some traffic lights were off and police manning the traffic. I barely made to my errands, extended time to return. Next day, $25 charge posted to my credit card. Reason? You need to return at least quarter tank full by their policy. I wish I can pick and choose the car with a full tank. Made a reservation well in advance. They called 1 hr before our reservation to say the car had a flat tire. They offered us a replacement vehicle but it was too small to haul all 5 of us around. We waited for the car to be repaired but our reservation was at 9 and it wasn't finished until 2, which was well past the time we were able to go do what we had planned. He did give us a credit (25$) which I don't think we will use since this is our last day on the island. After renting the car I realized I left all my clothes in the back so I called HUI and they said to reserve a car for 10 minutes so I could get my clothes back, unfortunately that plan didn't work out. HUI gave me a different car not the one already rented. I got charged twice, $15 and $9. I emailed them that night and the next morning they got back to me and said they would open the car for me which was amazing. They did that and I asked for a refund for my $15 and $9 dollars they charged me and they only refunded me my $9. My insurance also covers me in Hawaii so I asked if I could get some of my money back since I was already insured and they said no. read more

Tried this for the first time yesterday while staying in Waikiki during Covid pandemic. It was great! Wanted to take a quick trip with our family of four to Diamond Head. Found Hui through a quick google search for Honolulu car shares. App was easy to use. Membership process took only a few minutes for approval, and I was able to book a car a few blocks away. Location was well marked with a big Hui Car Share sign visible from the street. Car was in good condition and easy to unlock with app (very cool technology!) Only small glitch: couldn't find gas card in car, ended up paying for gas on own credit card, but they were very nice about reimbursing me. Huge plus: excellent customer service! They actually answer the phone and helped me with three different questions (including when I accidentally left something in the car after returning it). Prices start from about $10/hr and you have to return the car to the same location you got it. Hopefully they will continue to expand! A really nice, flexible alternative to pricey car rentals and pricey parking around Waikiki. read more

Not only is the parking spot on the 5th floor and took the first 15 minutes of my reservation but as I returned the car I accidentally hit lock and return. Immediately after I called customer service who told me it would be impossible to renter the car and I would have to send in an email and wait one to two weeks for me to get my license sitting right in front of me. I wanted to like this company but after my experience with customer support I have to withhold my recommendation. I left my glasses in a car and after calling customer support SIX TIMES I still haven't been able to get in contact with a person. They make you sit in a phone queue but end up terminating the call because "no agents are available". After hours support said the car inspection person would get my glasses and leave them for me to pick up in the office but they didn't even know what the address of the office was! They left a message for the office to call me but the office didn't call and ignored all of my attempts to get in contact with them. Hui has a great concept but until they can get their customer support together I would strongly recommend a normal rental car. Plenty of the garages around Waikiki offer parking for ~$10 a night and if you forget an item in the car you'll actually be able to get it back. read more

My husband and I visited Oahu and stayed in Waikiki. We both set up Hui accounts before we traveled to Oahu. There are definitely pros and cons with using the Hui car service. I'll start with the pros: using Hui was cheaper and more convenient than renting a car since we did not need a car our entire stay (no need to pay expensive parking fees to park at the hotel, hui rates were cheaper than rental rates, hui pays for gas). There were always Hui cars available within a short walking distance when we needed one. Most of the cars come with the nice touch screens and car play. You can extend your Hui reservation if no one has the car booked after you. This came in handy when we wanted to stay a little longer in Ko Olina and north shore and were easily able to extend our reservation from 9pm to 11pm without an additional charge. Now the cons: you should take pics and videos EVERY TIME you rent a hui before you get in the car. The app has you report any damage before it allows you to start the rental/unlock the doors. My husband reported damage to the vehicle before he started the rental, but neglected to get good enough pics of the damage before AND after the reservation. Hui charged him $1000 for the damage even though he reported it and sent in some time stamped pics from before starting the rental. I always take videos and pics before and after I rent a car so I did not have this issue. Double check the license plate matches the rental in the app. There are often multiple hui cars of the same make and model in the garages and it's very easy to inspect a car you think is yours, start the rental in the app, and realize that's not your car when you try to unlock with the app. If the actual car you rented has damage there is no way to report it once you start the rental and Hui WILL charge you (this is where the time stamped pics and video will save you). The Hui app includes interior damage inspection before you can unlock the car so there is no way to see all damage or issues from the car's window. You MUST extend your reservation or return your hui before the time expires or you will be charged a ridiculous amount of money. Luckily, we didn't experience this issue by always returning the car on time or extending our reservation timely. read more

I use Hui car share on my green days that I leave my car at home. Today most of the cars near my office was rented out so I took the short walk from downtown to kakaako and the Keauhou place where they had a few cars still available. I chose to drive the Lexus and pay a few dollars more. The cars are inside the public garage and can be reserved and accessed via the Hui app. Getting in and out of the secured garage was a breeze when the camera reads the license plate and automatically raises the gate. To prep my self, I watched a few Youtube videos on Hui so I knew what to expect. The biggest plus for me was the fact that these Hui cars are available at my hotel (so no parking fee, woo hoo) and I didn't have to pay for gas. I was able to reserve a Hui car a few week before my trip in April, and I made a few 24-hour reservations so I can block the use from, say, late morning to the next late morning so I'd be able to use it kinda like 2 days. Keep in mind that if you rent it for more than 10 hours, you're charged the same up to 24 hours. I took the videos around the car before the use, but when I got in, I realized that the gas was running low and was not able to find the gas card. I called the office; but I got the after-hour message. I called the roadside service and they told me to look under the mat. Voila! A couple of issues/glitches I had with Hui car were: BT access into the car: maybe it's my phone or how the App is written, but once in a while, it would take me a minute for the App to communicate with the car. A few times, I had my family stand next to each door and wait for my phone to finish communicating with the car to unlock. "End Reservation": Maybe I didn't pay attention to the end of all the Youtube videos I watched on Hui cars; but I must've totally missed out on the "end Reservation" button. At the end of my first use of the car, I wasn't sure whether I should click the "End Reservation" to finish the use. I'm glad I did. Please remember to end your reservation on the App. Other than these issues, the car seemed to have been well maintained and ran great. I ended up with the same Prius Prime for all my reservations and I noticed that the car was washed in between my reservations. So I figured that Hui took in the car for maintenance/wash in between reservations. Even with the minor issues, I'd definitely use the service again - can't beat not having to pay for gas and parking/valet at the hotel. read more

Ok, then you call the customer service, you found they are out of business hour, useless. I rented a Prius for the day and was impressed initially with the ease of picking up the car and getting on the road. I was able to use my iPhone to unlock, it started and we were gone! I changed my mind after getting to our destination, about an hour away, when I was unable to lock the car with my phone. I called customer service, and was led through a series of troubleshooting tasks that did not produce any results. Then I was transferred to roadside service, and it became very clear that they know nothing about getting into a locked car. I called back again and this time was connected to somebody who seemed to be more knowledgeable about what was going on. She went through the same troubleshooting steps as I had already done, and when they did not work she put me on hold and called tech-support. We went through the same troubleshooting steps again, only this time. Still no results. Then she told me that she was having tech-support make a video of how to make sure the car is turned off so that I can lock it with the application. (Are you kidding me!!!??) 10 minutes later I still had not received the video from them, however, they did call. Again they walked me through the same steps. This time the person I was talking to was able to take it a level deeper and had me force close the Hui app, and re-open. This allowed me to lock the car. I had to close the app several other times during the day in order to lock it. Bottom line, I wasted at least an hour, and experienced a lot of frustration that was totally unnecessary. If the call center had been instructed to have people close and then open the re-app, I could've breezed through this in about five minutes. Better yet they should build a more full proof application. they did refund an hour of my time and I returned the car with no other issues. I would use them again because they do have a good concept....just lacking in software quality and support. read more

I rented Hui for five days and the side mirror was damaged by some scumbag when simply parked on the street and guess what, I'm responsible for the repair cost up to $1,000! sucks to be me who didn't read the fine print like most consumers who believe that gas and insurance are included. Buyer be ware, you might be liable for damages up to $1,000 even if you only rent Hui for only one hour/$11! When you saw Huis website saying gas and insurance included, you think any damages to the car during your rental period is covered, right? Wrong! In the fine print there is a $1000 damage fee to cover any damages to the car during your usage. Regardless of the length of your rental, you might be liable for up to $1000 out of pocket cost EVERYTIME you rent from Hui, which means $5000 of damages on YOU the renter if you use hui on five different occasions get involved in a Hit and run, vandalism or an accident. Unlike zipcar, which offers damage waiver at additional $0.89/hour or $10/month, Hui has no such option and you the renters would be holding the bag at the end of the day. You might think your credit card companies' CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) would cover the repair? good luck arguing with the claim examiners about Hui being a "rental agency" and supplying them with all the documents needed like a traditional rental agency, which Hui don't have; I have been wasting hours with the credit card company benefits people and they don't care...I would not use Hui again because the disproportional, huge out of pocket cost I might incur even if I'm the best driver in the world until they add the collision waiver option to their business model. read more

This review was based on my experience this morning. I downloaded the app for my Android and went to sign up. When entering date of birth, it defaults to Jan of 2004. It does not allow you to jump to 1965. I had to swipe month by month for 40 years. The rest of the sign up wasn't so bad but when trying to make a reservation, it defaults to your current location and again, no way to jump to the future destination, I had to scroll out from Arizona to Hawaii. I made a reservation to use one of their rentals two months ago but when I arrived at the pick up spot the app would not load. I kept getting a contact support message. I called them multiple times, and eventually I was only left with the option of leaving a voicemail rather than talking to anyone. I also emailed them about this issue. It's been over 6 hours and have yet to hear from anyone. I had to cancel plans I had with an Airbnb experience for the North Shore because of this issue. I really did enjoy having the power to get a rental car basically whenever i wanted and with their many rental locations it was pretty easy. But theres a catch to that.. -BE ADVISED- I had rented a prius from the airport location and took it to my hotel at Ala Moana center and I attempted to end my reservation at my hotels hui location and it would NOT END. So i called the support number and they told me i HAVE to return it to the original location which was the airport location even though it doesn't make sense to go back to the airport after we just got off the plane and arrived at the hotel. I ended up getting charged extra because I had to extend my reservation to GO BACK to the airport and the get an uber back. My wife was frustrated... I would give them 0 stars if I could. We were unable to get into the car because the app failed to work and unlock the car for us. The app is incredibly buggy and barely works. We called customer service around 10 times and were only able to get someone on the line once. That conversation was entirely unhelpful. The rep clearly had no idea how to solve the issue and we were told a tech person would call us back to help. We waited by the car for two hours. No call came. During this time, we came across two other groups who were unable to get their app to work, unable to get into their car, and unable to get in touch with support. Ultimately we gave up and left to make new plans for the day that didn't require a car. We had to reschedule other tours that we had planned for the day because Hui completely let us down. read more

I had a car booked for last Saturday from Hui car share. However, I got a notification saying they had a system error and all customers were unable to access the app for a few days. Thus I was not able to access my rental and my time on that Saturday was completely wasted. Then, I was STILL CHARGED for the rental. I called customer service THREE times and I had been told every time that I am talking to someone from the answering service and the "mobility team" is out of the office at the moment. They told me that the mobility will call me back the following morning, but I have yet to receive a call. Our party was a bit confused on whether we could park our cars overnight at any station or if it had to be at the designated pick up area. It wasn't clear on the site. For this matter, I docked 1 star being that it was a challenge each night looking for parking since our HUI station only had 2 spots (which were both filled each day). The #1 reason we went w/ HUI was because of the free parking so please clarify on your site whether users can park at any station, any time! read more

We stayed in the Hilton Hawaiian Village (Lagoon Tower) in Oahu and found it incredibly convenient to rent a Prius with HUI. It was parked at the Ilikai hotel which was just steps away from where we were staying. It was incredibly convenient to book through the very user friendly app and I discovered on one of our trips while using the car that I was able to extend the time (I was worried we were not going to make it to return it in time so that was a huge relief to see as an option in the last few minutes before the car was due back). As long as HUI continues to have good availability (since I've heard that can be a downside), I'm never going back to the old way of renting a car! This is a perfect way to run a quick errand (such as a trip to the the grocery store). Note: in some situations (where you might take a longer time) it might be more economical to get an Uber since HUI is by the hour (side note: you can also do day rentals). read more

Could not find any rental cars that would work for me. It seems that the fleet is very small or the service is too popular and there is nothing to rent. Nevertheless, the system is a little bit shady. You can't see what's available. You are required to create an account, upload your drivers licence, enter your address and credit card BEFORE you can see what's available. Imagine that Amazon needs to check your ID and credit card before allowing you to see what they sell. If you want to delete your account, well... you need to call them... Identity theft, anyone? Very shady way to do business, indeed. read more

We were able to get a Prius Prime for 3.5 hours in Honolulu and it was great! Getting into and out of the car was a breeze. Our only issue was the onboard charging chord didn't work and the app puts a significant load on the iPhone battery. I would definitely bring my own charge chord next time. Other than that small issue (forcing us to buy a high priced charge chord en route) it was a 10. We got to see a lot of the peninsula south of Honolulu. read more

Great car and awesome tour scanner on inside of drivers side window and plays info and directions through car speakers. It was my 2nd time in Hawaii we did the tour listed on the window of the car it was awesome i would have pd hundreds of dollars for a tour like this one it was for free we got awesome pictures of the family and ate great food hubby said that the shrimp from the food truck on the tour was some of the best he has ever had .
