I wrote a review of Hughes Air around 2013, but all my Yelp reviews from before I became a Yelp Eliter, all disappeared. I had a horrid experience with AC "Smart" back in 2012 when my insurance Homesite finally agreed to pay for me to have a new AC unit to replace the obsolete Goettl that was damaged by the huge hailstorm. AC Smart installed my AC unit wrong, when they agreed to install it the right way, lying sales person. I filed complaint with BBB (by this time they had 33 complaints, when I first hired AC Smart, they only had 3 complaints), and if AC Smart did not pay another contractor to reinstall my AC unit RIGHT, BBB would give AC Dumb a 1 star review. So AC DUMB had to pay $1700 for me to chose my contractor to reinstall my American Standard 4 ton, the right way. I had gotten a bid from Jim Hughes way before, for a new AC. I was intrigued that Jim believes in not using that elbow, cos you lose energy and wind velocity in the elbow. Jim likes the AC unit sitting right on top of the duct, like a hen sits on it's eggs. Jim, also at that time, had the lowest bid for a new American Standard 4 ton. So I chose Hughes air to do the reinstallation of my AC unit the way Jim recommended, which I had to pay for a new stand that would sit directly on the roof duct. The reason why I am giving Jim Hughes 4 stars instead of 5 stars, is because it was installed by a technician who has lotsa AC experience including with Wolfe Air, which contractors said was the best in the business (SUPER expensive!). But he had only been working for Jim for a month. Well the 4 stars is because several years after the installation, a guy friend went up on my roof and discovered that the wire nuts that Hughes new guy in 2013 used was insufficient, and they melted off inside the junction box, causing the wires that were twisted together to be exposed and laying against the wall of the metal box they were in. If the roof were wet, and someone walked on the roof, they could get electricuted. So I took pictures and sent them to Jim Hughes. He said he had fired that "new guy" because he was stealing business from jim, and making money on the side all in his own pocket. But Jim sent his project supervisor over who used the proper wire nuts and resealed the entire junction box, with clear permanent caulk, so water would not get inside the box. Jim made it right. When I told another contractor about Jim's idea of not using an elbow, that contractor said they do not like to install that way because if the AC unit leaked water around where it sat, then the water would make its way down the duct and cause damage inside the house. That is exactly what happened on my second AC unit which was installed by another contractor sitting on the duct, before I bought the house. I had a lot of carpet and wall damage inside the house, because it happened when I was living in another state, and by the time I got back, it was all rotten and moldy., Jim gave me a bid to fix that issue, but it was no longer the good price he gave me the first time, which was years before. So I did not use Jim again. I also regret that I installed the huge American Standard 4 ton the way Jim told me, because it positions the AC unit higher up on the roof, and it is a lot more visible from the street. Now I am about the only house where my AC unit is visible as some Darth Vadar from the street. But Jim says "It works better", because the cold air from AC goes directly down into the duct into the house, and does not get warmed up in the elbow. I have not had a leak from the AC unit into the house with that AC unit that Jim installed, as of yet. Next year, 2022, it will be 10 years since I had that AC installed. read more

Tried to edit through my initial google review go find it!! The true integrity of this company is horrible but I can't edit to update. I'm now left with a $6000+ and counting for a too large hvac system that wasn't properly installed. From the mouth of the owner they are no longer financially obligated or morally to help! That would mean their conscious would have to come into play but obviously karma isn't of her concern. If you find a problem whether their fault after a year they can and will escape accountability!! Buyers beware!! At least this choice will be here for 3 years through the ROC and BBB all I can do at this point is share my experience. Literally no integrity professionally or morally and that's sad!! Let no one else be taken advantage of this way. Took 3 days for my AC unit to be repaired, which left my family without heat during a week where the temperature was in the 40's at night. Having a 2 month old in the house without heat was added stress that we just didn't need. I had a new air conditioning and furnace install in 2018. We had some issues during the install and they have continued to today, July 15, 2023. First, the water built up in the tubing and shut the air conditioning unit down in August. I was having to drain the water out with a turkey baster to have air conditioning. Hughes Air sent their Operations Manager out to check out the problem. He reconfigured the tubing set-up but the problem persisted. I had a technician come out from K & R Air Conditioning and he solved the problem immediately. He drilled a couple of holes in the outside pipe to let the water drain out. Problem solved. Also, the K & R technician discovered the unit was not installed level. In the future, this could cause me problems too. This past week, I started having problems with the air conditioning whereby the temperature would rise upto 80 degrees and stay there even though I had the air conditioning set at 71 degrees. During the service check today, the K & R technician discovered the wiring was backwards in the furnace. The fan was not working properly either. I have a two stage unit. It stayed on level one the whole time. My house has a 56% humidity level today because the unit is not working properly. The inside thermastat was not programmed corectly for the two stage system. I really did my homework before choosing Hughes Air. I got several quotes. The owner came out to our house and we felt like his company would do a great job. I found Hughes Air a couple years ago. I had a new unit installed by a previous a/c contractor who I did not want to do business with any longer. The new unit was a Trane so I thought who better to suggest a a/c contractor then the people at Trane. So I stopped by the Trane Supply store & the first name out of their mouth was Hughes Air. I've been a customer for 3-4 yrs now. I called yesterday because my a/c was going on then off, on then off. They had someone here within 2 hrs. Mark fixed the problem, showed me a few things to check when something isn't right & we were cooling down. I really appreciate how responsive, professional & friendly they are. Awful/terrible/waste of time and money. Only spent 5-10min in diagnostics mode and wanted $89 to tell me I had a leak and I needed a new AC unit. Had two other companies out and one suggested new AC unit due to age...other fixed the issue/cleaned coils and filled Freon for $350. All fixed. Hughes doesn't care about fixing issues only cares about the easy upscale. Do not use!! read more

What a great experience with Jim and the team at Hughes Air. I was having trouble with my breakers on a Friday at 4pm. I called Hughes and told Jim about the problem and he was at my house within the hour. He had me back up an running the same day. My 2 units were 16 years old...so I asked him for a quote for replacement. He came to me with a better price and system configuration than the other 3 guys which had quoted me earlier in the month. His team was fast and courteous and installed my new Trane units the following week. He came back and double checked the work. My experience with Hughes has been deplorable. We had a new Trane HVAC unit installed 10/2016. They have come out to our home numerous times to fix or replace thermostats and equipment. On 01/3/22 I contacted them because I was not getting heat from my system. They sent out a technician that afternoon. They told my husband that the unit had a leak that needed to be repaired, then put 5lbs of refrigerant in the unit. They charged us for the call and the refrigerant (approx. $500.) They were going to email us a receipt and we have never received an email. When I arrived home later that evening from work the unit was still not working. I called Hughes that night and spoke with Fay who informed me that there was a leak that needed to be fixed and until it was taken care of, we would have no heat. I asked her to have Mr. Hughes call me back as soon as possible. It is now 1/11/22, I have called Hughes and left messages with no return calls. My husband drove out to their office on 1/5/22 and the office was all locked up. We have now had 9 days with no heat in our home, and no call from Hughes. read more

I just had Mark over. He told me he wanted to replace all of the ducts to do it the "right way". I told him we'd have to do it the wrong way. Also that thousands of homes in Arizona are exactly the same as mine. At that he got furious told me about his 30 yeasts of experience and stomped out, declaring something about burning out the motor and that his company refuses to do it the wrong way. Seeing how angry he was, he certainly made the right decision to leave, but it would have been ideal if he could have remained calm and explained to me how larger ducts create more resistance and burn out motors. read more

My 16 year old A/C unit stopped working. My husband called a few companies for quotes. Hughes Air was the last company he spoke with. We were quoted a fair price for a quality product (Trane). The installers spent a day in our home installing the new system. I was working from home that day and the installers were so quiet that it was no disruption at all. I have only great things to say about Hughes Air since I contacted them about replacing my heat pump last December. I had done a slew of research, and had contacted several dreadful companies before I made my decision to go with Hughes Air. It was the best decision I could have made! Everyone at Hughes is professional and friendly, and they truly believe in providing excellent customer service. That's rare in this day and age, and very appreciated, especially since I can be a pain-in-the-butt with my pre-purchase questions! :) Jim Hughes came out personally to analyze my house and my heating and cooling needs and provide the estimates. We discussed uneven temps, and duct work, and Jim saw one problem with my duct work but told me to hold off and see if the new unit helped this problem, instead of trying to up-sell me when I was vulnerable. That was impressive! I went with the Trane XL16c (4 ton, 16-seer, 2-stage), and while I haven't had any problems with the unit itself, Reno and Nate have been out a couple of times to do adjustments to ensure my comfort...including installing and adjusting dampers to even out the temperatures around my house. And this was all part of the installation service. How sweet is that? I wish I would have discovered Hughes Air when I bought my house in 2002, but I didn't, and am now recommending them to everyone I know. I own and run my own business, and I always try to support other small businesses, especially when they treat their customers as well as I treat mine. Thank you, to everyone at Hughes Air! Hughes Air was wonderful to deal with! I had a Rosie certified company come out and they properly diagnosed the problem but the price they quoted me for a replacement fan motor that was on their truck was $500, not even the Trane proper replacement. When I checked with them the next morning, they said it would be $634. I had a feeling this was going to happen, as with so many other Rosie-on-the-House certified contractors, that made me look someplace else the night before and found Hughes. I sent them an e-mail that evening and Jim the owner contacted me first thing in the morning and gave me a quote of $460 for the proper replacement for a Trane unit. Furthermore he was able to have Reno out at my house 4-5 hours later and in 30 minutes he had my unit purring along. Reno didn't try to sell me anything else and was very friendly and obviously knew what he was doing. I got several business cards because I will surely refer all my friends and family to Hughes.
