My wife had the French dip which she said was very awesome. All of the waiters and waitresses were appropriately nicely, dressed and long sleeves, cover, tattoos, and any markings no one was wearing earrings all over their faces. Cute small town restaurant with small town vibes! The bread is good and fresh and our server was kind and helpful. We ordered the salmon and the short ribs. The salmon was a little overcooked for us, and the short ribs weren't quite cooked enough, but it was still tasty. The green beans were out of this world! It was a pretty expensive meal and didn't blow us away so we're not in a big hurry to come back, but it's a nice option in the area and I hope they continue to refine their craft and provide that great service for years to come. read more

We stopped in on our way to antelope island. The store was so cute and well kept. The booths were roomy and very comfortable. Everything we ate was super flavorful and well portioned. Would not recommend for takeout, unfortunately. We got the portobello chicken with green beans and the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and soup. They forgot our mashed potatoes and the food overall was just a miss and not great. The green beans were shriveled. The tortilla soup was just vegetable soup with a little bit of chicken. The bread was excellent but it will probably be a very long time if we give it another shot. read more

We have eaten here regularly (a couple times a month) for the past several years. We have tried almost everything on the menu, and we are rarely disappointed. You can tell that the owner actually cares about running a great restaurant. When things don't go according to plan, the owner steps up and does everything he can to make it right. The food is great. We have our favorites, including the burgers, the pastas, the buffalo ranch chicken melt, the chicken fried steak, the prime rib, the salmon, and more. We love that they give bread and sugar cookies when you order takeout! Definitely one of our favorite places to eat in Syracuse! read more

The two stars are for the pleasant ambiance and convenient location, and a nice, but maybe not quite so informative server. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have been disappointed by the food itself. Because I don't eat large portions, I chose not to order a full entrée with two sides and instead ordered the "Crispy" Calamari as my meal, fully expecting a generous plate of crisp, well-prepared calamari, along with a side of broccoli. What arrived, however, was a very sparse portion--just a small handful of limp calamari strips accompanied by a cup of Cajun sauce and a lemon wedge. At a $16 price point, this felt extremely underwhelming. The side of broccoli, while delicious, was served in a small cup and cost an additional $5.49, which also felt disproportionately expensive. After tip, my total came to nearly $28, despite having barely eaten what amounted to less than a child-sized serving. For comparison, a 12-ounce New York steak with two sides would have cost me less. While this didn't ruin the time I spent with friends I hadn't seen in a while, it did put a noticeable damper on the experience. If this had been a one-off issue, I might feel differently, but the food here has consistently been hit or miss. Even their Loaded Baked Potato Soup (ordered on previous visits) resembles more of a clam chowder, with heavy celery and very little of the traditional "loaded" ingredients like bacon or cheese. And the sweet potato fries are more like crunchy orange grids instead of being crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. That said, I do want to acknowledge that some menu items have been enjoyable in the past. The Portobello Mushroom Chicken, Butterflied Shrimp, and French Dip Sandwich have all been very good. While I enjoy the atmosphere and the people I come here with, I will think carefully before choosing to return, as the inconsistency and pricing no longer feel worth the risk. read more

We love Hug-Hes. The Pan Seared Alaskan Salmon is my all time favorite. I never thought I would literally crave fish. I tell everyone to try it, and they are never disappointed. Also the Spinach Artichoke Dip.... Holy Heaven!! My husband loves their onion rings and the crispy chicken, avocado salad. We also really enjoy their Fried Green Beans and Cheese Curds which can come in a Build your own Appetizer. Great burgers, really good pasta. I never had anything at hug-hes that I've hated... but I've never had anything at hug-hes that I love. Their food is "okay". I would put it at the same level as an Applebees. That being said, they do really well here in Syracuse. People love it. Service is great and the place is clean. Just wish the food was as good as the rest of it. I did go in to try their new menu item this week, the bruschetta. I ate one bite and left the rest. No mozzarella, just Parmesan cheese and the tomatoes were crushed like salsa. read more

I love this place! Every time we go it has been great! I have not had one thing I did not like. The food is so good and the service is always wonderful! They also serve a special homemade bread with a kind of strawberry butter that is sooooo good! The deserts are also delicious! The restaurant is right by the Syracuse movie theater and has a good ambiance for a family or date night. We also used them once for a business meeting and the catering was a hit! Hug-hes is a great local restaurant! The bread with raspberry butter is delicious and you get it with every order along with some average sugar cookies. I personally LOVE the prime rib salad. It's HUGE too! The prime rib is only offered Thursday to Sunday until it runs out but you can get prime rib on your salad every day of the week! We also like their fish and chips and the buffalo fries. Their cheese curds are good for not being in Wisconsin and I'd def recommend getting them when you go. Their toffee though is where it's at. We ordered some while we waited for a table once and had intentions of eating a little bit and ended up eating whole bag and bought extra after. Their chicken salad sandwiches are tasty too. They aren't full of mayo flavor like a lot of them are so that's a good lunch pick too! You won't regret stopping in! read more

I'll start by saying the food is generally good....BUT yesterday the service (waitress) was so bad I'll tell everyone they should avoid this place and go elsewhere...or do a fast in order to not reward less than mediocre service. Seriously. Last night 3/1/2024, a young blond waitress with pig tails did nothing but ignore me, purposely. No drink refills. No condiments when requested. Just attitude and rolling eyes. And I am not the only table that was annoyed with her. The other couple across from me were treated the same. In fact I had to ask multiple people, including the bus boy, before I could even get any ketchup. By that time my food was cold. And then when she brought me something, the check, she was rude as hell. And then she was once again rude as can be when she saw I didn't include a tip. And why would I? She provided no service. She was nothing but a young entitled person that acted like her job was an inconvenient way of earning money. Her manager and store owner should can her. I don't say that lightly. Update - I talked to the manager. She was very apologetic and was to address the matter directly. I'll be giving this place another try. More to come. My guess is it will be better. One bad employee unfortunately can taint things. read more

I really want to like Hug-Hes if for no other reason than it is only a couple blocks from my home but it just doesn't seem to please. They do some things well but overall the value and quality for the price just aren't there for me. We recently tried Hug-Hes for the second time hoping things would be better than we remembered. We ordered to go and they did a great job taking the order over the phone, being on time, handling our special requests, and packaging the food. I got the fish and chips with the beef veggie soup as my side. The portions were large, with plenty of fish and fries. The fish looked awesome, beer-battered and cooked appropriately. Unfortunately, the batter had zero flavor, apparently, they don't season it and the fish (cod) didn't have enough flavor of its own. Luckily I ordered extra lemons which helped provide flavor along with the provided tarter sauce. The fries were steak fries which I assume are frozen vs freshly made, nothing special. The beef veggie soup was celery onion soup in beef broth with a couple of red potato chunks, not too exciting or flavorful. Along with the items we ordered we also got complimentary beer bread with raspberry butter and a couple of frosted cookies, both were good, but both were very sweet. The complimentary items were appreciated and added value to the overall meal but the quality of the main courses and sides made for an overpriced experience. read more

I called and asked if my allergies to wheat, egg and dairy could be accommodated and ordered a salad with no cheese, and asked what dressing they recommended. When I picked up my order, there was ranch in the salad (two allergies there). I asked them to take it out. I decided to get some fries, and again they gave me fry sauce. I had to ask about everything. No one really had any idea on how to work with allergies. There were several possible meals on the menu, (if it's not cooked in butter). They also served the meal with bread and butter, and sugar cookies. Um... how many times did I mention my allergies? I was not impressed. Hopefully they will train staff better. I think I like this place. I've been here twice for lunch over the last week. It's close to my house and I may make this my new go-to spot but I'm not sure yet. I like the ambience. It's sleek, modern and comfortable inside. The huge cookies are a must try. The shoe string French fries are not shoe string at all. They are regular cut fries (weird). The drink menu is on the short side and both times, I had to ask for the drink menu (weird). I've tried the fish and chips and also the coconut shrimp. There was way too much breading on the cod. At first glance, it looks like big pieces of fish but it's really a little bit of fish inside a ton of breading. Coconut shrimp was jumbo but fried a little too hard.
