Are you going to believe me when I say that the best pizza in the Hudson Valley is the Detroit-style pie of Hudson & Packard? You better! Look, I was expecting it to be good... I wasn't expecting it to be *this* good. I will first speak the virtues of the vegan pie because that is the one that I ate. You pick four toppings and it's a little extra for Violife cheese, which I recommend that you do, too, in order to get the full, decadent experience. I also had mushrooms, olive tapenade, spinach and artichokes. The crust is thick, yes, but not thick like Chicago-style as this is more like an airy focaccia and not doughy at all. The sauce is fucking incredible. Perfection: tangy, salty and nice and thick. The amount of toppings and cheese are not too little nor too much but just right. My god, it was so good that I forced myself to stop at 3/4 of the pie and take the rest home. It was just as good two nights later. My husband had one of the meaty pies (the Cutlass Supreme) and he, too, deemed it above and beyond any pizza we've had in this area. He said he'd be willing to drive the 20 minutes to and from Poughkeepsie to get our weekly fix (and he hates driving). Coming from NJ I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to pizza. Ever since moving to the area everyone's been chewing my ear off about H&P. Being able to say that I have tried close to every pie on the menu, I'm a believer for the hype. Obviously this is not the traditional round thin crust you get elsewhere, this Detroit style has incredible structure and crust. Everyone there takes the food seriously and it's worth a drive to try. Finally made it on a Saturday nite in February and it was still hoping (had to wait 15 min for a spot at the bar 'cause didn't realize they take reservations). Got a great view of their pizza making operation from sitting at the "bar" area. Quite and operation -- The pizza was great -- airy and chewy. You really can't go wrong with food at Hudson and Packard. I would encourage you to try the special pizzas that they offer. They change frequently and are always delicious. The last one I tried was lamb and I was extremely surprised at how delicious I found it. The salads and the wings are also very good. Just know that everything takes time, it is cooked to order, and it is worth the wait. This is not really a restaurant where you can add on a couple of extras and expect them to come out quickly. The pizza was quite good here and the ambiance was pleasant. The music selection was also cool. Parking is free on the street, if you are lucky, or across the street in the municipal lot for $1.50 per hour. The only downside was the very, very long wait for the pizza to come out of the oven, which was odd since there were very few others in the restaurant. It might be best to order ahead. read more

I've eaten here several times, and don't get me wrong the food is really good. But like like most restaurants, as it gets older, it doesn't get better. Got an 8x10 pizza for lunch actually, we got 2. They measured 8x6. The slices used to be big like a slice of Sicilian. These were so small, and NOT WORTH the 23 dollars for 4 slices. Per pie. I was so disappointed I went to email them, but an email only took so many characters. So I thought I'd call, and give them my opinion being a 4 time returning customer. A waitress came over right away, brought water and gave us the QR code for the menu. She came back to take the order. I ordered The Who's Got the Beet Salad. It was huge definitely big enough to share with my hubby. The salad had fresh mixed greens, slices of beet, goat cheese and walnuts. It all paired well and was delicious! I had the Zombie cider. It had hints of honey and cherry. Sooo good! Then we waited and waited for the pizza. It took about 20 min from the time we were done the salad. The waitress did come over. She finally went and took a pizza from takeout and was reprimanded by the boss/pizza maker. The take out was booming. This was my first introduction to Detroit Style Pizza without ever being in Detroit and I was impressed. The crust is always cooked to a crispy perfection and the flavors are always spot on. Order early because they do sell out, especially because they're the only spot in Poughkeepsie that does this type of pizza. Their regular menu items like Thunderbird and Ford Funghi are my go-to unless I'm feeling a custom. If their El Camino was regularly on the menu that would also be in my rotation. Unless it's a busy hour, the service is really quick and everyone at the restaurant is very friendly. I only wish Detroit pizzas were bigger (they're a 10x10" I think) because this is a single serve meal for me and the price does will add up if you're looking to try and order for 2-4+ people. The sign on the door for the hours doesn't match the Yelp info - not sure if we came in too close to closing at 6:45 p on a Thursday. Note that they do not have high chairs. Hudson & Packard (HP) offers traditional Detroit style pizza. Although I'm a huge fan of NY style and wood fired pizzas, HP has broadened my perspective and I can honestly say that I'm a huge fan of Detroit style now. With their permanent store recently opened, Hudson & Packard is near the Poughkeepsie Bridge and has a large public parking lot across the street for easy downtown parking. You can't miss HP with their new, blue neon sign and inviting store front. I tried a four piece pie back in September - grabbing a pepperoni style with Mike's Hot Honey dipping sauce. This was probably one of the best pizzas I've had. On our most recent order, we again tried the Thunderbird and the Ambassador varieties. Both were great, but I highly recommend the Ambassador - double pepperoni with fresh red sauce. I ordered a Mike's Hot Honey but chose not to use it because the Ambassador was too good on its own. I will definitely order this again in the future. Pros: -Amazing ingredients and phenomenal pizza. -Fills you up -unique style to offset the dozens and dozens of other NY style pizza shops -Great social media updates -Can we talk about the cool sign again? Things to know: -Pies are four slices (looks like 10" x 10"). If you're ordering for a group, then you may want to budget one pie for two people. -Pies are $17 and up. For me, it's worth every penny, but know that if you're ordering a few pies, your bill can add up quickly. One of the best spots in Poughkeepsie. As a lover of NY thin crust a Detroit style pizza did not appeal the first time I went here. However I was quickly won over however as the pizza is great. H&P authentic Detroit style pizza is world class and beyond compare. This place is a gem. I am from Philly and have had a lot of Philly and New York City pizza from famous spots in both Cities. H&P pizza stands with the top reviewed pizza spots in Philly and NYC and beats out a lot of them. World class and should not be missed.
