They had a special with a burger, any side and a soft drink, I got a small cheeseburger, my son got the large. The burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and mustard. Mayo can be added. I had mine with no pickles and extra mayo. My son removed the pickles and the onions. The bun to meat ratio was perfect, although I don't think the bun was toasted (not a huge deal). The outside is messy and appears neglected. The windows are so dark, at first we doubted if they were even open. The inside smells like their grease hood is not working. I was not very hungry, so I asked the waitress about the chili. She said that the chili hamburger is one of their most popular dishes. I didn't want the burger, just a bowl of chili. Mike ordered a simple burger and fries. His order came out fairly quickly, but it was taking longer for my bowl of chili. As I sat there waiting, I saw the cook place a disposable bowl on the pass. The waitress disappeared around the corner, and appeared about two minutes later with the chili in a proper bowl. She obviously microwaved the chili. Mike's burger was edible, but the fries were rubbish. They were greasy and tasteless, even after a crap ton of salt. Not crispy at all. The chili may not BE Wolf Brand, but they have mixed WB in with it because it tastes exactly like WB. The waitress was pleasant-ish and seemed friendly, but despite the fact that she could see I took two bites of chili and there were a pile of fries on Mike's plate, she NEVER asked how our meal was. Fair warning: The check-out process in this place is unlike anything I've seen anywhere. When you are finished eating, you go to the counter, where the waitress is. She tells you what you owe, and then asks "Would you like to add a tip?", if you respond "Yes", she asks "How much?" Seriously? I guess it's a great way to shame people into giving you a larger tip than they ordinarily would have, but come on. This is 2025. Purchase an iPad or decent POS. Just to be clear, my daughter is a waitress/restaurant manager and I know how hard she works for her money. I standardly tip 20% unless the service was really awful, and then I tip 15%. Our food was soon there and we dug in. My chicken fried steak was good but the mashed potatoes and cornbread were the stars. I'm not a big fan of salad or green beans but they were pretty good for vegetation. My wife enjoyed her catfish basket. She prefers cornmeal on catfish over flour breading and was pleased with the crispy cornmeal and the generous portion. Now for the main event. Pie! Strawn's is known for their strawberry pie and for good reason. It was the best strawberry pie that I have ever eaten. The whipped cream topping was transcendent and paired perfectly with the strawberries. My photo does not do this pie justice. My wife went with coconut pie and while it was very good the strawberry was the winner. Looking forward to returning to Straw's Eat Shop in the future.
