I am basing my 5 star review on the French Crullers alone. I have been eating these things for about 30 years (started at the old location on Union) and they have never failed to be the most scrumptious things I have ever put in my mouth. Not everyone likes French Crullers but it is my favorite type of donut and Howard's knows how to make them. These are not like the cake style regular cruller, these are the lighter ones with the sort of hollow inside. God bless they are good. They melt in your mouth. If you are passing them up when you go to Howard's, you are seriously missing out. read more

The donuts at Howard's are excellent. I came here for the donut hole eating contest. I managed to eat about 50 donut holes before I threw in the towel, but the winner bested well over 100 donut holes. Just imagine the size of that pile of donut holes on the table before the competition commenced. I'm really surprised Man v. Food has not had an episode here to see if Adam Richman could conquer the famed 100-donut-hole challenge or the lesser known comically-oversized-donut challenge. I absolutely hate being treated the way this Asian woman treated me & our friend this morning! It was 5am but I can't describe the rude vibe she gave ... The Donuts are good. So was the pig n a blanket that she felt bothered to warm up. However, her attitude makes me never want the see the inside of Howard's again. read more

I would really give this a 3.5. The donuts are good. Not great good. What they offer, however, is great service. They are fast, accurate and always nice. They have a adequate selection and now offer hot breakfast sandwich items. While there are shops in town making better donuts, you won't be disappointed with Howards. They've been around a long time for good reason. read more

Love this place!! Local, family-owned. I live about a block away (on Tutwiler), so it is very hard to drive past on a Saturday or Sunday morning and resist. The donuts are delicious, extremely affordable, and the staff is kind and friendly. read more

I like to stop in here for donuts on the way to work! You get in and out in a hurry and the customer service people know what they are doing. I like to get a donut hole variety sampler. They have 4 types of donut holes: powdered, cinnamon sugar, chocolate iced, and glazed. There's something about their plain glazed - maybe vanilla in the glaze but they are addictive. I'm not sure what to say besides the donuts are always fresh, fluffy and delicious, and they have a nice selection of of pastries and drinks. Oh, and I'm not sure how their prices compare to other donut shops, but I think their prices are good and well worth it!! The hours on Yelp and other sites online are not correct. The hours on the door are: M - S, 4:00 am - 6:00 pm; Sun, 5:00 am - 5:00 pm. I have gone there as early as 4:15 am on a weekday, so I know at least the weekday opening hour is correct. This place is great for a night owl like me, very early risers, or someone who has been out partying late, and wants a snack before bed. I love donuts, so I've tried several shops around town. Howard's on Summer is, hands down, the best place I've tried. I don't know what they use to make their chocolate glaze, but it's a bit different than other shops and absolutely delicious! I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's almost like......it's perhaps a bit darker chocolate - not overly sweet like a lot of chocolate glazed donuts. Hmmm....guess I figured out what to say! Probably the most solid in Memphis. I've been eating Howard's since I was in grade school, and I'm not a spring chicken.

Donuts were among the best I have ever had. Service was also outstanding. Only reason for a 4-star review (instead of 5) is that I bought a doughnut and they gave me a receipt for the doughnut; I don't need a receipt for the doughnut. I'll just give you the money, and you give me the doughnut, end of transaction. We don't need to bring ink and paper into this. I just can't imagine a scenario where I would have to prove that I bought a doughnut. read more

I had a city saver coupon for "buy 6 donuts get 6 free". I was a bit disappointed to find out that it really meant get 6 glazed donuts for free regardless of what you got. That aside, the donuts were okay. Not the best, but not the worst I've had either. I do like that their cake donuts are not overpoweringly sweet. I enjoyed that. The glazed donuts were pretty sweet though. Also, the pricing system seemed a bit confusing and incomplete. I'm definitely going to go back there and try more donuts. I have been going to Howards for years. I dropped by yesterday with friends and was appalled at the way the manager and staff treated us. One of my friends paper bag was split along the bottom. When he picked up his bag the donut fell to the floor. The manager basically told him to bad. Not my fault......your bag was spilt and your product fell out. The store was not as clean as I was used to at this (Summer and Waring) location. I will not go back. read more

Up until about five minutes ago I was one of Howards biggest fans...I tried to preorder four dozen apple fritters to be picked up by a friend who is going to Memphis this weekend and all I got was a hard time from the oriental lady that answered the phone. I love the taste of Howard's donuts. I pass this one everyday on my way to work and use to stop frequently to buy donuts for the office. I quit going there because the man who works in there has made inappropriate comments to me several times. My college aged son was with me once and he kept referring to my son as my boyfriend. I explained he is my son but he kept doing it loudly in front of customers. I was giving a friend of my sons a ride to school and we went in and got the same treatment. There have been several other incidents but the straw that broke the camels back is when I wanted something with chocolate and the man explained to me that he like chocolate on everything including his girlfriend. I refuse to go back in there and subject myself to those type of comments. I am highly offended that someone working in a business would even say something like that to a customer. This Howard's location definitely lost a good customer. read more
