This looks like a ghetto hole in the wall but do yourself a favor and stop in! Their donut selection amazing! They have a lot of drinks and even breakfast sandwiches. I got a dozen to bring to work and also got a custom crème filled donut! If you ask for one to be filled they will fill for you, how amazing is that! Donuts are a food group for me so I loved these. According to the lady behind the counter I ordered $24 worth of products, tipped $3.50, drove 20 minutes home and then drove twenty minutes back all because I wanted to swap out a donut that I ordered on purpose. What really happened was I ordered a donut that wasn't in the display case so they made it in the back. I didn't see it until I got home and saw the one donut was made wrong. Instead of swapping ONE donut out they accused me of lying and lost a loyal customer. While they did end up swapping it out before I left, I'm extremely upset to be accused of lying. We happened upon this shop when the restaurant we chose for breakfast was closed. The donuts here are amazing! Lots of variety, good prices, and fresh donuts. We got a half dozen of different types of donuts and ate three right away. The Frosted Red Velvet had a crunch around the exterior from being fried. It had a wonderful mouth feel between the crunch, the soft interior and the sweet icing. The Pink Sprinkle was fresh but no different than most other donut shops. The Chocolate Dipped Sourdough was exactly like the glazed one you typically see but with a nice chocolatey taste - not too sweet either. We are saving the rest for later. The worker grew frustrated as the customer wanted to use his debit card, which requires a minimum purchase of $4 or $5. After pondering, he made his choice. On any given morning Driving to Howard's as dawn approaches & the morning commute of regulars stop in before work. Customers gather at the counter eager for a quick & convenient bite. Other regulars prefer taking the day slow & grab a seat quick as dining room space has limited seating & they are wanting to enjoy a slower pace savouring their tasty pastry sandwich Kolache or donut with coffee or morning beverage of choice offered. From the moment display cases are stocked coffees brewed & orders taken the morning rush begins.    I use to pass Howard's giving it no thought until stopping in with my ex gf on her way to work making me a new regular here as I frequented here while she ordered her dozen glazed & I would order my usual of a ham egg and cheese croissant a kolache & french curler with milk.  When I arrived the first thing I took notice of was the display case showcasing a small variety of pastries and donuts which all looked delicious so I ordered a dozen for me & my ex gf to share later that day. There's a warmer counter containing my 3 favorites of Kolaches  croissant-wiches & breakfast biscuit varieties filled with delicious breakfast meats. There's not more I can ask for, variety it's perfect.   When I would receive my hot sandwich or kolache my orders would differ in consistency. There's times I'd come in early yet the sandwiches or kolaches would be lukewarm & what would remain unchanged is the underwhelming seasoning of my breakfast sandwiches. Cashiers here are hospitable & helpful with my orders. If it wasn't for the lack of time & limited seating. What I would do is take time watching traffic pass by while I enjoy my meal. Why not? They keep the dining room clean. It's peaceful enough to read the paper or a book. My family has been going to Howard's Donuts on Summer for over 20 years. Today will be the last time. I went to Howard's after picking up breakfast at nearby McDonalds-one breakfast item with hash browns. Because I had my Lab in the car and didn't want to leave an empty McDonalds sack for her to get into, I took it in to the store and put it in their trash can located in the small eating area. I waited in line, ordered and was paying my bill when the owner/ manager (I'm assuming since she interrupted the clerk who has helping me) bellowed at me that I was not to bring my household trash to her store ever again. I explained about the dog and the McDonalds bag. She responded that it wasn't her problem. I said that if she acted like that to her customers, she might have to worry about how she treated people who were frequenting her establishment. She told me she could do without my business. WOW, I'm still shocked. After many, many years of going there, it will be sad when my children and grandchildren come to Memphis and I explain their favorite donut store is no longer an option. I know the economy out there is rough but customer service like this will drive away even longtime customers. As for me, I'm finding a new breakfast place. Luckily my kids love Starbucks and a new one just opened further east down Summer Ave. read more

Y-U-M. Only three letters can describe this place. When I'm craving sugar or any pastry, I never ever think about donuts just because that's not who I am. Yet my girlfriend has been telling me about this local donut shop. I had promised her a donut day after a tough week at the gym (ironic). I do not regret this experience as it was soooooo pleasant. I asked for the freshest donuts and it was the glazed donut and then we also got two cake donuts. They were sweet but extremely balanced and smooth. The texture was crispy and crunchy but not in a stale way. The glaze was so crystallized that it gave it an additional crunch! The flavor was bomb! I don't frequent donut shops very often, and when I do I expect too much I think. It's like never going to McDonalds, then finally treating yourself to a large fries and they come out soggy. That's how I felt here. If I had gotten a box or eaten in the store, I probably would have given another star, but they crammed both frosted donuts into one tiny bag which turned the contents into a smushy, deflated, colorful mess. The frosting was a little too sweet. I should have stuck with the staples: glazed, sugar and stuffed. All of those looked really good. I also got a plain cake donut and loved it. The batter was very good and it was cooked perfectly; little crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Sure, Krispy Kreme gets all the press, but since Mr. Howard opened his shop on Madison and Avalon (now a wings & beepers store), Memphians have flocked in, in the mornings to get a tasty sugar rush and coffee. This location still serves the same recipe blueberry donuts that had a certain singer from Tupelo coming in for more (probably more than he should've) and a chocolate cake donut that was a favorite of Rufus Thomas. *personal favs: apple fritters, the blueberry and the old fashioned chocolate cake donuts. read more
