Have gone exclusively to this location for years for all my gardening needs. My wife bought the wrong variety of fertilome fertilizer. I Tried returning the next day with a receipt. The cashier pointed at the sign that said no returns. Customer service echoed the same policy. It's funny how such a small no-cost gesture can drive a long time customer away. And shocking that any business will make their customer eat $120 worth of fertilizer they can't use. read more

I was charged for a flat of zinnias that I did not purchase. Trying to reach any of the Houston Garden Centers by phone is impossible. They have discontinued many location phone numbers or the message center is full and cannot accept any more. So I emailed the corporate office with the receipt and an explanation. I was met with a very chilly reception over the phone. Still no response to their mistake. Visiting store #33 and trying to speak with manager was also a wasted effort. The manager wasn't going to admit to any mistakes. He offered up a phone number that I had already tried. Houston Garden Center has two starts too many on YELP. Customer service is nonexistent. Horrific service--no one knows about the plants sold in this place. When you ask questions--if you can find someone to help--they are not answered. When I asked where I could find particular items I was told outside that way. Plants are expensive despite the ads I always see on TV for well priced plants. I had no idea how much work goes into getting a live tree. I say work, but I mean in a good, kinda way. I also had no idea the staff are the ones who tie the tree to the top of your car. I have always avoided getting a live tree because I thought I had to figure out how to get the tree home or how to buy the pan to put the water in. How will the tree stand up? Let's just say that the staff here was exceptional. They had no idea I was clueless. Upon arriving and getting out of my car, a guy walked right up to me, talking about all the things I didn't know but was slightly embarrassed to ask. He walked over to the trees, asking about my room size and where the tree would go. He pointed out this one and that one, talking about this one being full, this one being tall, or this one might be too short. He went on talking about how he was going to nip a little off the top and cut the bottom and the stand. All the while I'm walking and just nodding. My last shock of the day, I did see the big half-off sign but I thought for sure these big beautiful Christmas trees' original price had to be 400 to 500 or more dollars. Nope, I got my tree half off the original price of 80-something dollars, making my price 40-something. You can't beat that, Merry Christmas! read more

I was at the Houston Garden Center on 59 at 99 at 11am on 4/14/2025. While shopping in the large left section of the nursery, the overhead sprinkler system turned on. By the time I was able to get to a covered area, I was soaking wet. I figured the sprinklers went on by mistake, and went to talk to the cashiers. The cashier's told me they have no control of the automated sprinkler system. I went to talk to the employee who watched me get soaked, and he could not speak English. I called the main office 24 hours later to let them know what happened thinking the sprinklers went on by mistake, and the person who answered the phone was extremely ugly to me. I will NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN! read more

My wife purchased a lot of items there, some of the plants were poisonous, we brought them back in 3 days and they wouldnt honor a return. They said we could leave the plants and would have to call corporate. I called Corporate and spoke with Jennifer who was incredibly rude and talked down to me. She said she works for the owner when i asked who her manager was and who i could talk to. Apparently Matt Hooper is the one i need to call now and i need to wait 5 more days to talk to him. all over 60 dollars, I've spent over a thousand dollars there over the course of the last 15 years if not more. They lost a long time customer. I will stick with the smaller nurseries like RWS that care about the customers and relationships. read more

I managed to nurture around 40 Monarch caterpillars from hatching to a good size in a safe enclosure. However, when I purchased a milkweed plant from Houston Garden Center, which showed no indication of containing pesticides on the label and was supposedly pesticide-free according to a nursery staff member, all of my thriving caterpillars, which were about an inch long, plump, and happy, died within hours of being introduced to the plant. Many of them even discharged green fluids, some simply curled up and died. Monarch Butterflies are on the verge of extinction and the milkweed plant is essential to their survival. Without milkweed, the larva would not be able to develop into a butterfly. What does the Houston Garden Center do to save these beautiful pollinators? Several spanish speaking employees standing around talking to each other, however, no customer service skills. Items not priced, if you want to know the price you have to walk it up to the cashier. We went to the one off Katy & Westgreen. We had been there for and no problem. Today, there was a lady at the register playing a game on her phone, when I asked her a question she gave a dirty look like a was bother her her. So we walk around and went back because she was the only register open to pay for 20 bags of bark mulch, again she was on her phone playing a game and gave me a dirty look because she had to stop playing her game. She rang me up and I asked her if I was bothering her with my purchase, she didn't say anything. So I her what her name was, she wouldn't give it to me and told me to go around to pick up my bark mulch. We drove around and waited and waited. No one came, so I loaded it myself. Grrrrr. I am not sure why so many bad reviews. This place has a lot of cool and healthy plants for literally the best price. Yeah you don't get a warranty, but I'd rather have a healthy plant for 1/4 of the price. Also I don't like being bugged while at the nursery, so I don't mind the lack of customer service. Eager to get some spring color for my yard, stopped by here (1960 & Jones Road) because I saw the commercial and I needed some expertise in picking my selections. I must say, it is NOTHING like the commercial. The selection was slightly better than what you would find at a box store, but they had only 1 person out of 12 employees I counted that spoke English (and I use that term lightly). Furthermore, this person knew nothing more than what I could read on plant cards myself. To top it off, prices are higher than the box stores. Needless to say, I will never return. Adios! read more

Ridiculous company. I was told the stores do NOT have a phone. You have to call the corporate number and they will tell you if they ha e what you are looking for but they will NOT tell you the price. You ha e to go to the store. They advertise fresh cut grass on Thursday but you have to call the Corporate number to see if your location has been delivered and then you must drive there to find out the price! Inferior St. Augustine grass sod. They pick and load grass so I didn't notice that every piece of sod was cut so thin that dirt was missing anywhere from 20-50 percent per piece, which meant there were no roots for the portion missing dirt. Will not buy from them again. read more

Came here for Medina lawn food and some shrubs. Every bottle of lawn food had a price sticker for $14.99. They rang up $16.99 at the register. Friendly staff. I purchased the my first Christmas Tree as an adult. I thought it was pricey at $60. Is that what they go for? I paid $150 for my fake one and I'm sure had I not sold it, it would have used it for 20+ years. In any case, I chose my tree and had them mount it on a bowl and stand for me. One thing about real trees...its hard to find a symmetrical one. My tree had a sagging limb that I didn't notice in the lot. It bothered me every time I looked at it. The lot guy carefully tied the tree to my vehicle and I was on my way. Whole thing took maybe 20 minutes. I'll be back for other gardening necessities but I think I'll be heading to a tree farm next year. read more

I only popped in for a minute to ask if they were carrying any Milkweed and the nice lady behind the counter told me that they hadn't received any yet but they should in the next two weeks. Buyer BEWARE, there are no returns or refunds. You are not told this at the time of check out but there is a very small sign in the entrance stating that. You cant even exchange if the product is defected or if a plant dies. And don't bother calling the corporate office or emailing, they wont respond. I sent the owner an email over a week ago and still no response. No worries, went down the street to BIG TEX TREES and spent 2k on plants, trees and products. If I could give it 0 stars, that would still be too many stars! Yesterday, we bought a 15 gal plant for $89.99. When we got it home the container fell over and the plant came out of the dirt. It had NO roots on it! The roots were about 1 gal and the other 14 gals in the container were dirt. When we took it back today to get our money back, they refused to honor their product. They have a strange selection of garden plants available right now. Nothing normal! I believe they have shipped them in from Vietnam or the similar. They have none of your normal tomato plants, they have a string bean that you could wrap around the state of Texas, all kinds of weird Vietnamese peppers and no herbs other than Vietnamese stuff! I bought a few of these weird plants and two bags of dirt which the lady cashier told me they would help me load so she put on the cart for me to lug to my car. I stood at my car for a while and watched two or three men talking and helping each other but no customers. I finally had to load two huge bags of dirt by myself. Not sure what was going on there today, but no customer service at all. A couple of employee's were messing around (for lack of a better term) in the parking lot. One of them reluctantly led us to the very back corner of the property, pointed toward where we would find the trees we were looking for, then left us there in ankle deep mud, struggling to find an acceptable one. After pulling one out of the bunch we had to walk back to the front and find someone else to go get it. Then we loaded 8 bags of soil on a cart and unloaded them, along with the tree, into the back of our truck with absolutely no help. We'll not be shopping there ever again. read more

Elisabeth at Houston Garden Center impressed my wife and I. She had good knowledge on plants and when not sure found answers quickly. She also assisted picking out a crepe myrtle in the middle of a torrential downpour and stayed out there until we got it loaded. Her level of customer service was above and beyond. We highly recommend this location to anyone and see Elisabeth, yes with an S, she is awesome! read more
