Here on business and wanted a non chain restaurant . Came across this place and it did not disappoint. The bread was warm and the French onion soup was yummy. Owner treats customers like she treats her staff. Bartender was extremely nice and allowed my friend and I to try a mixed refrigerated drink only to be scolded by the owner. Owner then doubled down by telling us we needed to leave at 9:59 pm on a Saturday night. Upon trying to leave, owner said " I need that glass" even though I was nowhere near the door to leave. I have noticed that our visitor seems to be a somewhat conservative eater, always ordering the same meal. I asked them what they wanted for dinner and they replied, salad. Since I left this somewhat late in the afternoon on a Saturday, it was somewhat difficult to find a reservation for our entire party, food that we all might enjoy as well as the wished for salad. I thought House 406 satisfied our requirements. House 406 in Northbrook is named after the restaurant's Montana vacation home, and features locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, bringing a farm-to-table experience. This sounded intriguing, especially after our enjoyable Glacier National Park jaunt last fall. We enjoyed gawking at the Cybertruck in the parking lot. The restaurant is located next to Francesca's North and there is a Sunset Foods there as well. The parking lot was extremely crowded but we found a spot next to the Cybertruck. Inside the space is rather small and cozy but we were seated in comfortable chairs at a standard table. There were a few people at the bar and small groups seated throughout. I ordered an Italian Brambleish which was a mocktail although the way they served it gave it all the elegance of a premium cocktail. It was delicious and the greenish fresh note that I enjoyed was juniper essence. I ordered the horseradish Parmesan crusted whitefish and a Brussels sprout salad. The salad was fresh and green with crisp Granny Smith apples, salty cheese and fennel and hazelnuts. I loved the horseradish sauce on the tender flaky whitefish -- a little kick but not nose-clearing. My friend ordered the spicy corn soup and the oven roasted frenched chicken breast which had a crispy skin and rich bone marrow and ramp sauce. We also split some Parmesan truffle fries. The visitor ordered a short rib and brisket burger which they liked but said was a little dry. They asked for bbq sauce and said that tasted great and helped the burger. They did not order a salad. By this time the entire restaurant had filled and was quite noisy with friends greeting each other and the bar was full. We tried Grandma Dory's carrot cake which was four layers high, although the cake was dry and I would have preferred cream cheese frosting on it to buttercream. I did see that the carrot cake was gluten free. We enjoyed the fresh and seasonal tastes at House 406 and will make another housecall soon. read more

Friends from Elmhurst met us for dinner @ House 406 last night. It had been quite some time since we had gotten together. When we arrived the dining room was mostly full (5:45). The food & service was good and we had just declined ordering desert. We had planned on ordering coffee but before that was offered the check was dropped on our table (With tip $240). Upon filling out the tab with credit cards the owner quickly grabbed our tabs. Shortly after that we were asked to give up our table and go to the bar (which was packed solid) so people waiting could have our table. Basically we were asked to leave. We've been eating at 406 once to twice a month. Certainly we didn't feel like valued patrons and our evening was cut short due to other customers being prioritized over our group. read more

The risotto was a bit bland and came out room temp. The added chicken was overcooked and dry. The shrimp and scallop pasta was delicious. The pork chop was a little dry but the taste was there. We've been recommended this restaurant by so many folks and decided to come by for dinner for date night. The restaurant is a bit tucked away in the same plaza as Sunset Foods. We had a reservation but was running late due to catching the tail end of a freight train. But once we got there we were seated right away, and our waiter immediately came over and asked for drink orders. While I wasn't ready in that exact moment I ended up getting their blueberry mocktail which was delicious. They then brought out some warm bread, which was rosemary flavored. It was a bit overpowering but was still enjoyable. I got the skirt steak while my husband got the burger. I think I was a bit taken back by the steak because it was a bit overdone and rather burnt on the ends. The flavors for the caramelized onion and the sauce were Divine. For an entree costing $50+ it was rather shocking that it didn't come with sides. The We also got a side of truffle fries ($11) and Brussel sprouts ($9) to share. The fries were great, we didn't really taste the truffle flavor on them or in the aioli, but the Brussel sprouts were great. We didn't really see our waiter much after receiving our food as he got busy with the tables around us. After a while we were able to flag him down for our check. He was super sweet, but may have been a tad overwhelmed. Overall, we had a decent experience. read more

My friends and I popped into House 406 for a quick dinner after a day at the Botanical Garden. Since it was a Saturday, we called ahead, and they were able to seat us right away (it was ~6 pm). By 7 pm, the restaurant and bar area were pretty full - it's a cozy place with both indoor and outdoor seating. The patio just overlooks the parking lot of the strip mall, but still a nice option to enjoy the weather. Inside was giving bourbon & leather vibes - great for a date night. The service was pretty good - everything came out pretty quickly, including some yummy complimentary bread to start. I can't remember the name of the cocktail I ordered, but it was basically a smoked old fashioned and it was phenomenal. For food, I opted for the chicken with mushrooms and polenta, and I basically cleaned the plate. My friend let me snag a bite of her shrimp & risotto, which was also very good and flavorful! It's a limited but thoughtful, quality menu - so I would just check online ahead of time if there's a picky eater in your party. My bill for a cocktail and entree was ~$55 with tax+tip. I really wanted to like this restaurant more than I did! They were very gracious about us pushing our reservation back twice, so I really appreciate that. We decided to order side dishes as appetizers, which didn't phase them. Our waiter was nice enough. The service was slow and oddly timed - the "vibes" here felt off, in that there was very little coordination there, the staff seemed more casual than the restaurant's pricing would imply, and the loud space felt way too "well lit" for the elevated experience it was trying to achieve. We received our side dishes/appetizers before our drinks (not cocktails or anything time consuming, just seltzer and Sprite). That was a surprise! The entrees came, and they were a mixed bag. My husband liked his burger - he wasn't raving about it, but it was solid. I tried it and found it a bit dry. He liked his fries too, and their irregular shapes showed that it wasn't some mass produced, factory-made side dish, always appreciated. I tried the scallops, which were atop butternut squash risotto. The risotto's flavor was good, but the rice was a bit hard. I know that it is al dente, but the rice still felt a bit unappetizing in its texture. Worse yet was the scallops: these were tiny scallops, slightly larger than a quarter, and they tasted fishy. It was disgusting, and I barely ate any of it. I wound up telling our waiter, and I felt bad, but this was over $40 and gross. I saw the manager later, on the way to the bathroom, and she apologized, which was very nice! Throughout the evening, our waiter would disappear. Or he'd go to one table nearby without checking on the others in the vicinity, which was weird, so it was hard to track him down. For my husband's upcoming birthday, they gave us a lovely dessert: a small but tasty slice of homemade funfetti cake. Also, it was nice of them to take the scallop dish off of our bill. The menu is somewhat limited, but I'd give it another try at some point. read more

Someone was having a very rough day and could have used a pickup. And they're gluten free. I found this place randomly and it checked all the boxes. But I couldn't have unintentionally made things harder. I was out of town. DoorDash was down. Delivery services online were down. I called the restaurant out of frustration...and they took care of it. They set up delivery with someone who doesn't even do deliveries, and dropped off what was reported to me as an amazing gluten free dessert. Keep in mind that as a small restaurant they don't do deliveries like this. I'll be coming by soon to try the rest of the menu. I may have a new favorite restaurant in the area if the food is 10% as good as reported. This is how hospitality is done. read more

The soup was good and I got 3 small lamb chops with some sides for my meal. My total was $79.22 (before a tip) for just the 2 items (no drinks) and unfortunately I still left there hungry. The staff is warm, attentive, and always make us feel welcome -- especially when we bring our daughter along. They go out of their way to be sweet and accommodating with her, which means so much to us. We've been to House 406 a handful of times, and I'm genuinely surprised I haven't reviewed it yet. When we moved to the area in 2018, House 406 was recommended to us and has never let us down. From a date night to Valentine's Day to celebrating professional wins, it's a place that makes us feel welcome and adds some extra sparkle to our experience. They have an incredible bourbon list and offer bourbon flights. On our most recent visit, we opted for cocktails instead and were both happy with our choices - an Old Fashioned for me and a gin cocktail for my husband. Food is very good. It's upscale and elevated without being pretentious. I often opt for fish here because I don't like cooking it myself but enjoy eating it. I most recently had the horseradish Parmesan crusted whitefish. The sauce was excellent and the fish was flakey and mild. We shared a side of Brussels sprouts, which were also very tasty. Service is warm and friendly. Even at their busiest, we've had good experiences with kind, knowledgeable servers who can make suggestions, explain a cocktail, or steer me away from an allergen. We'll keep coming back here. The food is interesting and well-prepared, the service is great, and we love supporting a small local restaurant in our community. read more

Just had a birthday party for 20 girlfriends at House 406. Party was fabulous! Owner Jen was wonderful to work with. She helped plan a an amazing menu, service was great, food was outstanding!!! And, everything was gluten free. Delicious! I am celiac and it was so nice to be able to eat everything. My friends were very surprised when I told them it was all gluten free. Had a team dinner here and really enjoyed the meal overall. It appears the menu may be seasonal but we tried the lamb lollipops and grilled octopus to start. The lamb was cooked perfectly and although I wasn't a huge fan of the chutney/sauce, they were pretty tasty. The octopus was EXCELLENT so if they have this, try it! The char created great flavor and it was very tender. Paired with the baby new potatoes, micro greens, and sauce, it was a well composed appetizer. For the main course I ordered the glazed salmon over noodles and a side of the truffle fries. The salmon was slightly overcooked and the sauce the noodles were in was kind of bland so I think this dish could be improved but I really liked the fries. The white garlic sauce is fantastic with them so make sure you get that. The service was good and the place has a laid back atmosphere. Definitely give it a try! read more

I had a salad and I added salmon. Being gluten free meant many items were not available to me. That is basically what the waiter told me. The woman who checked us in was terrific and she is why I would try this place again. I did order a filthy martini and about 2-hours later had severe stomach issues. That has only happened once before and I was told by doc that it can happen if olive juice sits too long unrefrigerated or is very old. Not sure what happened, but wouldn't order martini this way from here again. Back to salmon on salad, it had basically no seasoning. I guess in their case gf means nothing on it. The ambiance of the restaurant is fine. We sat inside as it was hot and humid outside, but I would probably prefer to sit outside here. read more

Full stop: rave review to follow, I had the good fortune to receive, from the village of Northbrook, a $50 gift card to any Northbrook restaurant. I have the further good fortune of having a very smart daughter who suggested selecting a fellow GBN graduate's House 406. I've probably been here fewer than a handful of times, including once for my other smart daughter's HS graduation celebration. Each of those times we sat outside, which was lovely. However, dining inside was a whole new level of wonderful. I had to remind myself that I was not in a swanky downtown restaurant. One of the things I have always loved about House 406 is their VEGETARIAN French onion soup, rarely can one find any vegetarian soups on a menu, much less French onion soup. But, there's more... both soups on the menu were vegetarian, the other being a spicy corn soup. Of course we ordered both of these truly excellent soups. Oh, what looked like pretzel breads were first placed on the table, I love pretzel breads. For our mains my husband got the crusted white fish accompanied with a side of vegetables, outstanding. I got the sea bass which was served atop a creamy risotto with chopped asparagus which was out of this world. It was so rich that, and this never happens, I got full halfway through (the leftovers made for the best lunch the next day). Each piece of fish was cooked to perfection! We are pescatarian, the owner is vegan and gluten-free so she absolutely understands. They also have the most well curated bar on the NorthShore. Though the cocktails looked really interesting, I prefer dessert over alcohol. Like the soups, there were two choices for dessert: a peanut butter lava cake and a churro bread pudding... such tough decisions. Though it wouldn't have been terribly surprising, I didn't order both...only cause I was full from the rich risotto. I need to point out 3 little snafus: 1. The bread looked so much better than it tasted, though obviously personal preferences. Save room for the good stuff. 2. My bread pudding, which was decadently delicious, took a seemingly long time to come out. When it came out it was exceedingly hot, surprised the ice cream on top didn't just melt right away, and some of the edges were a little burnt. Still, yummy tasting. 3. They don't have espresso. Back to some more highlights: 1. Our waiter was quite good at his job; he was friendly, helpful, and sincere, purely delightful. 2. Each dish coming out was perfectly timed, we never felt rushed or unattended to, and they didn't clear our plates till each of us was done with our plates. 3. They are taking pandemic precautions and offer a tent, which is an option, but it is still an enclosed space. If you haven't lost interest by now, I'd like to add 2 more point, the playlist of piped in music was fine (one reviewer complained about that) and dinner for two was just over $100 (no drinks). read more

My visit to House 406 was wonderful. I had dinner there with my mom on March 11. Neither of us had ever been there, but we'd absolutely return. Our server was fabulous -- very personable as well as informative about the menu. I didn't catch his name, but when we mentioned that he looked familiar, he said he hears that often and that it's likely because he resembles Toby from "This Is Us." He really did, and even had a similar demeanor. We started out with drinks. I opted for the raspberry margarita, which our server highly recommended. It was an experience in itself -- my glass came filled with frozen raspberry balls, over which he poured the tequila at our table. The liquid melted the frozen components, sweetening the drink in the process. It was a unique experience, and the drink was good. We both ordered the King Salmon entree for dinner, which came with acorn squash quinoa and an apple salad. We were given a choice in how we wanted our salmon cooked. I opted for well done, and it was cooked exactly to my liking. It came beautifully presented -- a bed of quinoa, topped with the salmon, then covered with the salad. It was a good-sized portion of salmon and every bite was delicious. Dessert was also delicious. I ordered the churro bread pudding, while my mom opted for the chocolate and peanut butter lava cake. Again, they were beautifully presented and tasted great. We ate indoors, and only a few tables were occupied. There was also a large, heated tent in the parking lot. The restaurant was dimly lit and had an intimate, upscale atmosphere that matched the prices. Our bill came to about $110 with tax, before tip, for two drinks, two entrees and two desserts. More than I'd spend for a routine restaurant experience, but I'd definitely return to splurge or for a special occasion. read more

Disappointed After Years of Loyalty - We Won't Be Back! We've been loyal customers at this Northbrook restaurant since it opened--dining here nearly every week for over a decade. Sadly, after our last visit, we won't be returning. We arrived around 7:00 PM and were seated promptly, but that's where the good service ended. It took 15 minutes for anyone to take our order, and another 20 minutes for drinks to arrive. After that, we were completely ignored for over an hour--no one stopped by to check on us, refill water, drinks, or offer the usual bread and butter. When we finally flagged someone down at 8:20 PM (an hour after ordering), the server seemed irritated by our question and brushed off our request for bread. No apology, no explanation. Our food--just salads--arrived at 8:30 PM with no acknowledgment from the server, just plates dropped silently on the table. Even more disappointing was that the owner was there, moving liquor bottles at the bar, clearly aware of what was happening--and did absolutely nothing to make things right. For years, the staff knew us so well that we barely had to order--they'd simply ask, "Having the usual tonight?" That kind of personal service is what made this place special. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete 180. We've seen the service decline gradually, but this last experience was the final drop in the bucket. Let's talk about pricing: appetizers are now well into the double digits, and entrées range from $50-$80. And that's fine--if the experience, atmosphere, and service live up to it. But when the staff is disengaged, the owner is indifferent, and the décor hasn't been updated in over a decade (sagging chairs, scratched tables, and a tired feel), it simply doesn't add up. Over the past 10 years, we've watched the prices rise by 50%--and still, we never complained. We always left a generous tip and tried to support the business however we could. As residents of Northbrook for over 40 years, we've always made a point to support local establishments. But sadly, we'll be taking our business elsewhere--somewhere that still values its customers and remembers that hospitality matters. read more

Everything was delicious! We ordered octopus, lobster crostini and burrata. Octopus was definitely my favorite. Hanger steak was delicious and so tender. I ended the meal with lava cake. It was very rich. I was surprised to find such an amazing spot in this area far from Chicago. read more

Why are you even playing that song once in what you tout as an upscale restaurant. 80s rap seemed the constant during our Saturday evening meal from 7:30-9:30. I mean I can get my groove on but not all that appropriate for a restaurant during dinner. FAIL!! Service was nice but a bit aloof. And pacing was off even though we purposefully spaced our orders and mentioned we didn't want courses to overlap. We placed our entree orders 20 minutes after our first two course and still out entrees came out during first course. The pasta was bad over-sauced and over cooked!! Nothing really impressed me whatsoever about this strip mall suburban establishment. Oh and last thought why not convert the two single use bathrooms to unisex??? read more

Everything was perfect from drink to dessert. Spartan-owned and nestled in Dow town Northbrook, it was an outdoor experience to kick start our time in the suburbs. Food was perfect - lobster crostini, steak, whitefish, peanut butter lava cake. The Brussels sprouts were a bit hard, so get a different side. They had flights of whiskey. I had no idea this gem existed in Northbrook. I found this spot from a Facebook group and this was recommended for good eats around the North Shore area. I had no expectations coming in and it was fairly easy to book a reservation on Open Table. They have tables for outdoor dining and plenty of indoor dining. I opted for indoor since it's was gettin later and more chilly. Scott was our server and he was so patient with explaining the menu and recommendations. He talked me into getting the raspberry margarita which was definitely unique since the drink arrived with just raspberry ice balls. Scott then poured the rest of the mixture into it so as the ice melts, the flavor is altered. Being the over-analytical planner that I am, I skimmed through the dessert options and saw that they had a pineapple upside down cake. That's not something that you see often so I had to strategize accordingly to make sure I had room for that. I skipped the appetizers and just went straight for the main. I ended up getting the bone-in prime rib. Scott explained that the meats are local grass fed and essentially the whole restaurant is pretty much farm to table. You can definitely taste the quality of the ingredients and everything was expertly prepared with such unique flavor combinations. I thoroughly enjoyed the bacon Brussels sprouts but the roasted carrots was definitely unique since it was served with honey and ricotta. Everything was so good and I happily savored every bite! I did make sure to leave enough room for dessert and I was so happy with the pineapple upside down cake! It wasn't overly sweet and the cake part was so soft and fluffy. It was everything I needed at that moment! This was just my first time here and I can't rave about this place enough. Looking forward to coming back here again really soon! read more

WOW!!! From the drinks, to the appetizers, to the entrees, and the service - everything was phenomenal! I had the raspberry margarita, which is now my favorite drink ever! I went with 3 friends, and we shared the grilled octopus and truffle fries for appetizers - both were delicious! Myself and one other split the scallops with risotto and it was so rich (and amazing) that it was perfect to share.
