In full transparency, I come here almost exclusively for cocktails and appetizers with a friend. But there's a reason we come back over and over again. Service is always excellent and attentive. The dirty martinis (with blue cheese olives) are some of the best we've found. And there is nothing in my life that can't be improved with an order of their shoe string French fries. My only complaint is that they don't have a lot of variety on the appetizers -- and the menu hasn't changed in the time we've been coming here. Stopped in on a Monday for lunch and sat at the bar since we were told there was about a 20-minute wait for a table. Our waiter/bartender had a bit of an attitude, and some of his responses came across as rude. We ended up being there for about an hour and still noticed empty tables, so I'm not really sure what the 20-minute wait was about. I asked if I could substitute mashed potatoes for the baked potato, and there was also some back-and-forth about butterflying our steak. Since we wanted it well done, he kept insisting it would take longer, which we didn't mind at all. The steak ended up coming out not butterflied anyway, so I'm not really sure what the attitude was about. Overall, the food was really good, but the customer service could definitely be better. We actually stopped in to get some insight because we'd like to send some of our customers over from our business, so the service experience was important to us but we shall see? read more

I had an amazing experience here! I ordered a Filet and it was really good. They had a special crab dips and they were really good too. When we were ordering dessert, the waiter asked if we've tried the carrot cake and when we said no, they gave us a carrot cake on the house. I am usually not a fan of carrot cake but the carrot cake here was so good. I will definitely order it when I come back. The seats have candles lit and the lights were dimmed. Everything starts off perfectly when I was greeted and it never ended! The level of courtesy and attention turned my unassuming average lunch expectation into a mood altering experience. Staff didn't miss a beat...I was kind of bewildered by this for a weekday lunch. My table was clean and the sultry darkened mood with just enough lighting was relaxing. I will have to be honest. I was here previously about 10 years ago and at that time I didn't really pay attention to much of anything nor had the ability to leave a review. The one thing that stuck to my brain like an out of control campfire, s'mores, was their carrot cake! I'll get back to that in a second. Fast-forward and here we are. I am talking to my brother to figure out where we would like to have lunch and lo and behold, He rekindled the memory of us being here before and suggested we return. I couldn't agree more and was actually excited to return (due to that memory of the carrot cake). Yes here I go mentioning that carrot cake again. The menu wasn't crowded, but as you scanned down the list of offerings, every one of them sounded absolutely delicious and perfect for a lunch quite frankly, even a dinner. We started off of the Hong Kong shrimp appetizer, and that didn't disappoint perfect level of hot and sweet laid on a finally shredded bed of lettuce.. my brother and I settled on the steak burger. They had as one of their specials and holy cow(..literally)! The in house grind of select cuts was perfect. Perfect blend and so juicy and grilled medium to perfection. The grilled whole slice of onion that was at the outside edge of getting translucent added to the depth of every bite. It was a perfect little kiss of what a burger should have. The shoestring fries added the touch of being "fancy", but it's a french fry so who cares right? Rather than just throwing a stupid pile of hard cut potatoes on your plate, this added a different level of care and they tasted better. What I assume is their homemade thousand island dressing that I had requested on the side was barely used, but was appreciated. I'm a purest and tasting the burger first without any condiment is how I roll. Speaking of that I'm not 100% certain, but I believe it was a brioche style bun and it was perfectly slightly toasted over the grill and it was buttery soft where it needed to be. My brother opted to not have his with with the appointed arugula, but I did and it added to the overall flavor... let's face it, that cow had some greens first before I saw it. Why am I writing such a huge review on a burger? Well, this burger stood out from all the burgers I've had in a long list of them. The great thing about a burger is it's whatever you want to be. it's a quite simply the most universal and most creative thing you can do with a lump of beef! J Alexander's stepped up and owned this 8 ounces of beef perfection! Why such a long review on a burger one may ask? How many great reviews have you seen on a burger? I will definitely drive another 55 miles for this burger! Oh... I almost forgot, did I mentioned the carrot cake? Yeah... I had a piece again and it was the same as what I remembered and over the moon delicious! Nobody and I mean nobody does carrot cake like they do. The doors better close permanently if they ever get rid of that! I've had many desserts after a meal and regretted many of them. My wife probably would've said, "do you really need that after lunch?" That's why I came to lunch with my brother today because I knew I wanted the carrot cake. I brought my brother to this J Alexander's on a Tuesday night. The place was packed! We barely found a parking space in the huge parking lot. My brother is a vegan and I wanted him to try the veggie burger. Surprisingly, we were seated right away in a nice corner booth. Olivia was our server and it was only her second day at J Alex. She did a wonderful job considering the huge dinner rush. My brother ordered the veggie burger without cheese or mayo. The glaze on top of the burger looked amazing and the lettuce and tomato on the top bun were incredibly fresh. The lettuce was so crisp. He loved the whole meal! It was one of the best burgers ever. My Ahi Tuna Salad was a 10 out of 10. The tuna was perfectly seared and the salad was so fresh. It was delicious! My side of broccoli was amazing as well. We ordered the Four Vines Zinfandel. Although I would normally give this restaurant a positive review, I am offended by a $4.08 "package fee" they have added to carry-out orders. The manager explained that this is so the customer receives a properly packaged order. I promptly cancelled my order and contacted corporate headquarters to complain about this scam. read more

What a wonderful start to the weekend by going to J's. We started off by sharing the redwood salad and it was excellent - the chicken in it was really good- you could order this as your meal and be satisfied. We also went with the crispy shrimp appetizer and this is filling as well so to the sauce - but it's so tasty I definitely say to try it out. For entree I had the French dip and it was cooked to perfection and the horseradish sauce is a must get with this - so good! We also had the full slab of ribs and these were cooked to perfection BUT we weren't a fan of the bbq sauce - it was too sweet. The fries here are really good and I would skip the coleslaw. This place is very nice. Has a huge bar which is where I sat because I am I am dining alone. I Just had the filet kabobs. Probably will NOT order these again. I requested them to be cooked medium rare. What I got was medium to medium well. I have never had a tough filet until tonight. It was tough to cut and to eat. The vegetables on the kabob were not evenly cooked. They ranged from raw to mush. Very disappointing for such a high rated restaurant. The bartender took great care of me. He was pleasant and was quick to welcome me and serve me. The only downfall, he asked me how was my dinner, I said it's ok in a dissatisfied tone. He restated what I said and I replied with the same dissatisfied tone that it was ok. He left it at that. I am not complaining about his reaction because I have a cardinal rule to never send my food back to be replaced or expect to not pay for my dinner as long as I can eat it. I just know to never order steak from this place again. Sorry I did not take a picture of my dinner. Do I recommend this place, yes, great place for a date night. Had a nice experience at J Alexander's. I will give it a 6. I ordered a prime rib medium on a hot plate. I will say I know most places don't know what that means so when the plate wasn't hot I wasn't pressing the issue. What I am pressing is that I left around 6:30-7p. I mistakingly left my to go bag. Someone took it to the front . When I called back they had already tossed it But when I called to rectify the issue they gave me and entire new order to go. Came here after Christmas shopping and ordered the baked goat cheese and the Hong Kong shrimp for appetizers. Both were absolutely delicious. Had the Hyde park chicken sandwich and that was very good as well. My friend had the chicken Milanese which I tried and it was delicious. I will be getting that next time. Only thing I didn't like was that they didn't have a single Christmas or holiday decoration up. We were looking for a vibe after Christmas shopping and they fell short on that. No effort to partake.
