butter cake

First time back in 30 years to Chicago area but missed good Italian food so had to check out this place. Went on Monday night for dinner but place was already packed with happy customers. We waited for about an hour but the food was worth it! Food came relatively quickly after we ordered it. Butter cake is a must! We will definitely be back and try other items on the menu.

One of my must go places when visiting Chicago and always outstanding. Cute little place with fantastic service. Menu on a white board. The hole in the wall salad is always incredible and so is everything on the menu. We had salmon, seafood fra diavlo and shrimp scampi. Large portions and amazing flavor.

Menu of the evening. Possibly the worst seat in the house - you're in everyone's picture of the menu!

Since my last review I have returned multiple times to Hole in the Wall and we have enjoyed many tasty dinner since. We always start off with the baked clams. It's so simple but very delicious. The friend calamari is pretty classic too, not overly breaded and contains the whole calamari including the tentacles which we love! My husband's go to is the veal chop vesuvio because it's a well prepared, well seasoned, and generous portion if veal. Well grilled with some delicious roasted potatoes. He says it hits the spot every time. I like to try my way around the menu. I'm still enjoying the bucatini with seafood and osso bucco, but have also tried chicken piccata, seafood diavolo (there was so much seafood in it, I was in seafood heaven), and baked lasagna (cheesy goodness!). No matter what I order, it's been well prepared and delicious. My favorite still remains the bucatini with seafood. Our server, Laura, is incredible. She is fun and knowledgeable. She doesn't push us to quickly decide on our items and happy to give us recommendations if I'm ever torn between two choices. I've had items switched up too like adding in lobster when Laura says they're super fresh that day or switching a pasta for angel hair pasta and there's never been a problem. We finish our meal with a warm and decadent butter cake. It's slightly chewy, cakey, buttery, vanilla-y, and just the perfect way to end a meal. A reminder that this place is small and cozy, and arriving around 6:10-7:00 will result in a wait. They're pretty good at getting people sat, but know this isn't a place to linger and chat for 2-3 hours after your meal. Chances are there's a party waiting for your table. You might get sat closely with the table next to you or be nearly elbow to elbow with someone else from a different table so be prepared. It's still a warm and welcoming place with incredible service! Frank walks around the restaurant greeting diners and making sure their meal is delicious.

Get this! We had a 4:53pm arrival, and 1/3 of the dining room was full! By 5pm sharp, I heard the hostess quote a 45-60 minute wait time. So do what you will with that! My family has dined here twice now and enjoyed both meals thoroughly. A full bar is stocked, and I've enjoyed a strong lemon drop martini here, as well as a glass of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. Dining area has about 18 tables, so it feels very intimate and cozy. The menu is posted on a large whiteboard and can change frequently. Favorites we've tried are the ravioli (filled with spinach, mushroom, whatever is offered) and chicken picatta. We don't leave with any leftovers. Entrees can range from $25-60 at moderate portion sizes, so it is a spendy meal but worth every penny. Warm bread and butter are served before dinner and the fried calamari is a crispy appetizer that hits the spot. To touch on post dinner... save room because that butter cake is one of our favorite desserts anywhere!! It is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, served with gelato on top/side, whipped cream, and caramel and toasted pecans on our latest visit. Because there is no dessert menu (just what the waitstaff verbally tells you), here's what I can recall from it on our last visit last month: carrot cake, tiramisu, gelato, Oreo cake, banana chocolate chip cake, butter cake. Skip the Oreo cake. It tastes just like chocolate cake (a tasty one with a lovely crumb, just not reminiscent of Oreo at all) with a scoop of chocolate gelato on the side. Can't wait to return!

Shrimp scampi

While traveling on business I always look for " a hole in the wall" kinda place. Boy did I score on this place. It's a hidden gem. My server Laura was a sheer delight. I definitely needed her guidance as the menu was intimidating with an overwhelming listing of delectable delights. I opted for the baked clams as an appetizer and the shrimp scampi entree. WOW both were winners. Six buttery baked clams with a light crumb topping. The scampi literally shocked me with 3 massive shrimp butterflied with a seasoning to perfection. Definitely worth a return visit.

This place has high reviews on Yelp, so I had high expectations. Francesco's Hole in the Wall is a small restaurant.... Well, I suppose it fits the name. I would estimate no more than 30 people can fit in the tightly arranged furniture there. There is an outdoor dining area, that seats roughly another 15 people or so. I don't know... maybe my estimates are bad, but the whole point is this place is small. We got the salad which was OK. It consisted of iceburg lettuce, some ham and onions, and a nice vinegarette. Service was extremely slow. We waited close to 40-minutes to get our food. We got comped with a free dessert which was nice. Food overall lacked flavor and the pasta was over cooked. Unfortunately, we will not be going back there again.

lamb chops

i would give Francesco's Hole in the Wall 10 stars if i could .not only were the lamb chops delicious but service is second to none Great staff really appreciated the hard work .And as for my lambs they were tender and the 3 chops were nice size . The spinach ravioli were delicious and freshly made from scratch Thank you for a wonderful dinner

A Hidden Gem Worth the Drive! Francesco's Hole in the Wall lives up to its name in the most enchanting way possible. This intimate restaurant transforms what could be a cramped space into something magical through thoughtful design choices that make every diner feel like they've discovered a secret treasure. Ambiance: Cozy 4/5 The restaurant truly is a hole in the wall, intimate to the point where tables are quite close together, but rather than feeling claustrophobic, the space radiates warmth and character. The exposed brick walls and warm lighting create an atmosphere that says "special occasion" even on a casual Tuesday night. It's the kind of place where conversations naturally become more intimate and the outside world melts away. The menu posted directly on the wall adds to the authentic, unpretentious charm. There's something refreshingly old-school about this approach that signals you're in for a genuine culinary experience rather than a standard dining formula. Food: Extraordinary 5/5 Where do I even begin? The Chilean sea bass wasn't just exceptional, it ranks among the finest meals I've ever experienced. Each bite was perfect, showcasing both the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the kitchen. The Seafood Diavolo was equally divine. The meatballs deserve their own paragraph. They were made with care and featured that perfect blend of seasoning and texture that separates great Italian cooking from the merely good. Even the bread service impressed; the olive oil was so exceptional that it could have served as a meal in itself. Service: Perfect 5/5 Our server Mickey was an absolute delight. It's warm, attentive service that makes a meal memorable. The staff clearly understands that in such an intimate setting, service becomes part of the overall experience, and they deliver beautifully. We drove down from Milwaukee specifically for dinner here, and I wouldn't hesitate to make that drive again. Francesco's has earned a permanent spot on our special occasion rotation. A Note for Families: Given the intimate setting and close table spacing, this isn't the ideal spot for families with young children who need space to move around or require tablets for entertainment (nor should tablets ever be used without headphones at a restaurant). The restaurant's charm lies in its cozy, older child and adult-oriented atmosphere. Francesco's Hole in the Wall proves that sometimes the best experiences come in the smallest packages. This is destination dining at its finest, a place that turns a simple dinner into a memory you'll treasure. I hope to go back soon!

It's been 6+ years since our last visit here and little has changed. It's still a place for great Italian cuisine in a cozy, homey dining room with just 16 tightly packed tables. This time the wife and I came in for lunch. We had their Hole in the Wall salad, $20.95 which included adders for $3 each of red peppers, artichokes, and gorgonzola cheese, and lunch servings of their chicken parmesan ($16.95), and pasta shells with chicken, arugula, and mushrooms ($14.95). It was all tip-top delicious especially the chicken parmesan which was the best ever as it was a moist chicken breast with just a delicate bit of breading and smothered in delicious cheese. I might have thought the same during our last 2019 visit also as I noticed I had that dinner sized dish in my photos too! The pasta shell dish was very tasty too and the salad was a very nice first course. The base salad price is $14.95, and I didn't read the fine print and thought all the adders were included but as noted, they are $3 apiece and it's a whatever on that. They still use their daily hand written menus on a chalkboard. The dinner prices are on the high side, but the portions are generous and its'a all top notch delicious. You just can't go wrong with the food here, but just be prepared for a wait if you want to try them on the weekends.

When we arrived around 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, the restaurant wasn't busy, so we could pretty much choose any table we wanted. We waited about 10 minutes for our server, Mike, who provided very nice and attentive service. I ordered an iced tea ($3) and a Salsiccia Rossa Pizza (it was $18.95 when we visited, but is now $19.95 on their website). It came topped with house-made sausage, roasted peppers, caramelized onion, fresh mozzarella, basil, chili, and olive oil. The pizza came out very quickly, so we were surprised that it was rather cold. Mike told us that their pizzas were meant to be eaten with a knife and fork, and I could see why. The center was extremely thin and soggy, making it difficult to pick up a slice with my hands. I've had Neapolitan-style pizza before, but this one was a bit extreme. Some parts of the crust were burnt, too, leaving less of the pizza to enjoy. I'm not a big eater, so, I still shared some slices with my husband. The good news is that the pizza tasted pretty good. My husband ordered a glass of Chardonnay ($12) and the Trota Iridea ($30.95), which came with rainbow trout, sautéed spinach, roasted tomato, and salmoriglio sauce. He wanted to share the dish with me, so I tried a bite of the fish. It was tasty, with nicely crispy edges. If I return to Napolita, I'll probably skip the pizza and try some of the other dishes instead. A 3% hospitality charge was added to the bill. The policy was clearly disclosed, and the charge can be removed upon request. We chose to leave it. After dinner, we took a look at the patio in the back. I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it was, especially since part of it was covered. There was a live singer, and the atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. It looks like a lovely place to dine when the weather is nice. Overall, we had a pleasant experience, although the pizza was a disappointment. I'd consider returning to try other dishes and enjoy the patio. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

I'm going to go with 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 for our outing. Everything we ordered was delicious and top quality and the portion sizes were generous for their reasonable prices. Maria was our friendly and capable server. I made a reservation for 6:15pm, and it was needed as they are popular and their smallish space was at capacity. The patio was open out front, but it was a humid night and al fresco dining was not a desirable option by anyone. My only knock and the 1/2 star deduct is for their tight quarters. The tables are small and tightly packed, both in the smallish dining room, as well as on their patio. There is a cozy mom-and-pop vibe here, but it's honestly not the most comfortable dining, but at least tonight we had a corner table for a little more personal air space. It also got a bit loud. We had 2 appetizers and 3 entrees, and we had to have the appetizers first and with plates removed before there was enough space for the entrees. Dining for a party of 2 would be more comfortable at least, and I wouldn't hesitate to return for their great food and good value. For food and drink, we shared family style: - calamari fritte appetizer, $17 - crostini portobello appetizer, $13 - farfelle con salmone, $30 - vitella piccata, $32 - fettuccine con frutti di mare, $30 Complimentary warm French bread was provided. I also had a couple of Revolution Anti-Hero IPA's ($6 each). There is a 3% credit card fee fyi. There is also free public parking for local businesses right across Shermer Rd at the train station lot. Overall, a highly recommended, delicious, and quaint Italian restaurant and as mentioned I wouldn't hesitate to return!

I ordered and paid for two small pizzas at the counter, and learned I had to go to bar for drinks. The same cashier came over to take my drink order, where I paid separately. In about 15 minutes, our pizzas were ready at the counter: One with only cheese, and the other with sausage. We immediately noticed the ruffled-edge crust, which looked more like a pie for dessert. We both took a bite of each pizza, and immediately disliked the cornmeal crust. It tasted to me like it was made from Jiffy corn muffin mix, with a cardboard-like hardness. My wife disliked it so much she barely ate one small piece of pizza. I liked their cheese and sauce, and especially liked the sausage. I managed to eat two pieces thinking I'll give it a chance, but hated that crust so much I couldn't eat a third piece. There are plenty of other items on their menu other than pizza, which are the only things we will consider for any future visit. The dining room is large with a dark, traditional wood decor. Parking is free in their own lot. Having no table service, other than cleaning tables, logically results in a tip and cost savings. Now that I know this is how Barnaby's operates, I am not down-voting them based on service.

I made a reservation online for its latest slot and we arrived about 7 minutes early. I could see only 4 other tables seated who looked like they were almost done with their meals but we were greeted in a friendly way at the door with"we were waiting for you" and our reservation honor. We were shown to a window table with was half booth and in a corner which I love. The rest of the atmosphere inside had dark wood chairs and tablecloth & paper cloth coverings and in the back medium-sized bar-- think old-southern euro-chic. I was told they had the TVs on with the game earlier in the evening but by the time we came, they were not only off, I could barely see the TVs. It was perfectly calm and quiet in the place but I know from the lack of reservation times that it had been hopping beforehand. The waiter Ryan was great --Just enough attention without being bothersome and no attitude when asking questions. I especially liked that there was no sense of running us out of there as I learned the kitchen was closing soon. We ordered Orecchiette pasta dish with Italian sausage and Milanese chicken with the arugula salad and Tiramisu and Chocolate cake w vanilla gelato for dessert and both of us agreed everything was scrumptiously delicious. Good selection on wine. I even had the option of a sweet wine which is rare to have. I see there are reviews about it being too loud but I think it might be best to go when there are less crowds, like later in the night or off evenings because the experience was very, very nice. I would recommend highly.

Wish the tables were a little bit further away, or maybe along the wall, anyway, that was probably the only issue with the tables outside. The menu is extensive, with a wide variety of dishes. My better half got the pork chop, which was pounded thin yet still on the bone. It had a very nicely seasoned breading with lots of garlic and a few herbs. It also had three or four fresh cayenne peppers, which were sautéed with a butter type sauce and poured over the pork chop. It was nicely spicy with very good flavor. My entrée was the chicken Milanese, which was virtually identical in preparation as the pork chop, except obviously no bone, and no peppers or spicy butter sauce and was served with an arugula salad, which was delicious. Our two table mates got salads, one with grilled chicken, which was nice and warm and the other with shrimp. We also shared an order of the sautéed broccoli. It was amazing! It had nicely crisped and toasted garlic pieces, some lemon and olive oil. It was one of the most delicious broccoli side dishes I've had at a restaurant. Even though I took a pass on dessert, they ordered the cannoli which came two to an order. Am going to have to say that the cannoli shell itself was not very good. I tasted a tiny piece of it, and it seemed to have a little stale/refrigerator flavor and was not crisp or fresh tasting. That was the least favorite part of the meal. Everything else was delicious. Service was solid and there were a decent variety of wines by the glass available. We will definitely return to try other dishes that sounded great!

IMPORTANT: IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN HERE IN A WHILE, TRY IT AGAIN UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT…read more As I note below, I had been to the bar, but not the restaurant since it re-opened earlier this year after a water leak required them to close and remodel. We were expecting an "okay" meal and I'm delighted to say that they exceeded every expectation. This spot is a traditional, old time Italian spot and is a TOTAL home run. Greeted by the manager whom I had met before -- always a positive to be recognized, especially after only one other visit. Gentleman pouring our water and bringing the bread (warm, delicious, and served with olive oil, garlic, Parmesan) recognized the other couple with whom we came and hugs were exchanged (literally!) - this gentleman was upbeat and smiling and set a positive tone right out of the blocks. Our server/waiter was equally fabulous. He was attentive, knowledgable, personable...and emblematic of the type of restaurant this is, walked us through the menu (a lot of traditional Italian dishes) and a good list of specials (he had tried them all) ... and then noted that the chef will pretty much prepare anything provided they have the components. THAT, to me, is a sign of a great old-time Italian place. As is the personal visit from the chef. Entrees include a side salad or soup, so we skipped the appetizers. The side salads were as one might expect -- the house-made balsamic dressing served on the side was rich and fabulous. For the entrees: one order of the halibut, one pasta, and two of one of the specials: scallops in a saffron cream sauce. Four strong positive reviews. I'll add that I've eaten at the bar once, and ordered the veal parm which came with a side of pasta, and was elated with the food, the ambiance, and the service. The room is pretty traditional -- bar on the left, two well appointed (and pretty full) dining rooms to the right; tables and booths, white tablecloth, etc. Genuinely feels a bit like being in an old, traditional Chicago or New York Little Italy spot...but in suburban Glenview. There are a bunch of new entrants into the restaurant market in Glenview, and we have tried them all...and came here to make sure we were supporting the old standards. Gusto is a gem, and deserves every bit as much attention as its new competitors. Of note...with the new entrants, parking is at a premium. Gusto has its own lot...and offers complimentary valet for when it's full.
