Hourglass is the best place to step up your apres-ski beyond the basic snacks in the Great Hall (@Spruce Camp Lodge). Although pricey, they've got a great selection of sandwiches (all of which are served with house-made BBQ chips and goat milk ranch), and a decent handful of local beers, including the Stowe Ale produced by Rock Art Brewery. The house burger is as simple, yet as tasty as they come...it's topped with VT cheddar, cider-cured bacon, onions, tomato, lettuce, house pickles, and house burger sauce. If you're like me and want to spend every last minute shredding down the mountain, then fuel up on granola bars all day and save yourself for a nice late lunch here at Hourglass...you won't be disappointed! read more

Located in the Stowe Mountain Lodge, Hourglass is a high energy lounge that ground zero in the winter months. It's filled with skiers post slopes drinking, eating and being jovial. There are a mix of tables and couches spread through out, and if you're lucky enough to get one, it's an overall very cool experience. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and grabbed a couch. I ordered some food since my previous meal somewhere else was less than decent. I got the salmon sandwich, which came topped with guacamole and cole slaw. It was surprisingly delicious and came out in a very reasonable amount of time given how packed it was. Also had a glass of red wine which was very good. An overall great place to come if you're either staying or stopping by the Stowe Mountain Resort. Great vibe and good food. My husband and I were staying at The Lodge at Spruce Peak for the long weekend. This was our 3rd visit at the resort and 2nd time trying Hourglass. We had a busy day and just wanted to stay in the resort for the night. We also had a big lunch early in the day so wanted just a snack and a few drinks. We headed for Lounge and asked if there were any tables available. While their weren't any tables there were many seats available at the bar! The bartender was very friendly and we were given a drink and food menu right away. I didn't see any drinks that stuck out to me, so I decided to stick with the maple lemonade. It was SO good, I had 2! My husband had a cider on tap and he also enjoyed it. All of the items on the food menu sounded really great and it was hard to decide! I wish we had enough room to enjoy a full dinner! We decided on the pulled chicken nachos and then figured we would get a dessert to split. The nachos were delicious and portioned very well! It was a larger portion which came out on a tray right out of the oven. They were so good we finished the entire thing. I could not pass up on dessert and again, everything sounded yummy! My husband is a big creme brûlée fan so we chose the chocolate creme brûlée. The presentation was beautiful, and it tasted wonderful! We finished the whole thing! If you are staying at The lodge I highly suggest staying in for a night and eating at Hourglass, or even getting a drink prior to your dinner. I'm not sure why Solstice has so many negative reviews but the food at Hourglass seems to come from the kitchen of Solstice, and it was very tasty and presentable. Hourglass is the bar located in the lobby of the Stowe Mountain Lodge immediately outside of their full restaurant. You can get the both the regular and bar menu at the bar, and they both appeared to have some nice offerings. I stuck with the bar menu and was not dissatisfied. In the end, it's a bar in a ski resort, and you kind of get what you would expect there. I'm knocking a star off because I sat for ten minutes without being served (at the tables around the corner from the bar) before I was able to flag down a waiter, despite waiters serving the next table. read more

Raining hard and unseasonably warm so we came in to eat instead of skiing on icy slopes (they couldn't make snow due to all the rain according to snow patrol).. Lots of fireplaces and a warm inviting decor. Servers were friendly. Lots of high chairs - would have preferred sofas / comfy chairs but that's minor... My daughter had a marguerita pizza that was a bit oily but she liked it nevertheless. No leftovers despite her not being hungry. I had the lodge burger with winter greens. It has really good beef and was cooked exactly as I had asked for. The winter greens had cranberries and seeds, and was really flavourful. Overall, a good experience and reasonably priced. So it's the off season in more ways than one. We went here for dinner at a respectable time last night. The resort is clearly marketing itself to function in both summer and skiing seasons. It needs a commitment to prove it. The restaurant is a scaled down version of the hype next door Solstice. ( hint the menu was nearly identical) To start there was no one to seat is at the host/ess stand. Second we asked a busboy if we seat ourselves or will someone be coming. He brought us to a table near the bar. Ok, but a bit loud but by no means a deal breaker. Then we waited....... Water... Good start. Waitress came in about another 5. Took a drink order. One of the wines was not too my companion's liking so she agreed to replace it with no fuss. Thumbs up. We ordered focaccia bread and butter $7 to start as we were hungry. Then it happened........... 30 minutes. Had to ask the busboy to check on it. He literally came back and said it was coming. This is bread and butter. Not baked on site. Not churned butter on site. It came and was blah. I ordered rack of lamb and goat cheese gnocchi and my companion ordered flat iron steak frites. One hour later..... Dinner arrived cold. I mean bagged fries cold. Cold steak, raw lamb and cold gnocchi. Not rare lamb, raw. Waitress apologized and said it was management's fault as they don't hire enough staff to cover both restaurants. AH HA! She revealed that they only staff one kitchen for both restaurants despite very high prices. She also said that we were fortunate because the upscale sister restaurant sharing the kitchen had 90 minute waits regularly. Time to put your money behind your hype if you expect to live up to your attempt to compete with world class destination resorts. Should've had pizza delivered. read more

Hourglass is the little bar in the lobby of the amazingly nice Stowe Mountain Lodge at the Spruce Peak base of the mountain. The bar has several local beers on draft and offers an affordable sampler where you pick the 4 beers you want to try. The drink menu is rather small and very expensive and the food menu is also limited and pricey. The drinks were tasty, but $13 for a glorified Mudslide is a little much. The bartenders working when we visited were rather pretentious and came across as completely full of themselves. If you're stuck sitting at the bar listening to them you're better off grabbing your drink and finding one of those comfy chairs in the lobby. After one drink we headed down the Mountain Rd to an off-mountain sport for Apres-Ski. read more

We got a snack-y dinner here as well and I wasn't impressed by the food. We got a fig and proscuitto pizza that had almost no flavor. Honestly, I don't really taste things that bland very often. We also got a 5 cheese platter which was ok, but on the small side for the $20 we paid for it. Just had a very nice quick bite to eat here. I am staying in the hotel and though I appreciate the cuisine at Solstice (the full-service restaurant) I wasn't in the mood for those prices. Service was excellent. I asked the hostess if we could sit around the corner and she sent a server right over to take care of us (me, hubby and 2 year old son). Our server was very well informed about the menu and beverages and checked on us regularly. Now for the food. It's simple but very tasty and well done bar food for VERY reasonable prices. Its from the same kitchen and creation as Solstice which is know for its farm to table cooking and attention to organic and home-grown foods. Hubby got the chicken sandwich, nicely done with the wonderful addition of eggplant, roasted red peppers and olive mayo. I got the housemade pastrami which was excellent. The meat was very nice, with lots of good fat flavor without being chewy or overly greasy. Both sandwiches came with excellent, hand cut fries which unfortunately suffered from a heavy hand with the salt. The first few were yum and the rest were just too salty. Oh well, a minor mistake. My 2 year old loved his little personal sized flat bread pizza. And we got two Switchback Ales (one of our favorites) and spent $45 altogether including tax. A very good experience. I hope I get the chance to come back in winter and take full advantage of the comfy seats all over the place and many fireplaces. After a day trekking through northern Vermont, we got back to the Stowe Mountain Lodge pretty late in the day and while we wanted a hot meal no one really wanted to go back out. We looked to see what options were available and while it might be good, Solstice wasn't the type or price level we were looking for that evening. We decided on Hourglass and went down and sat right next to the fireplace with our youngest sitting in the nook. It was burgers all around, one with American, two with Vermont (of course :-) cheddar, and one with blue cheese. Pretty decent and each done exactly as ordered. We also tried the buffalo wings, which were okay - nothing spectacular, but good nonetheless. I did have a gin martini made with a local distillery gin called Barr Hill gin from the Caledonia Spirits Company located in Hardwick. Pretty good and I'll look for it when we get home. read more

We had the place to ourselves last night! We enjoyed a late dinner with steak frites and squash soup. Top that off the s delicious bourbon fizz cocktail or two and ding dong cake for dessert. They need some lessons in customer service. Family of 5 with a possible check of over $150 and they ignored us, guests of the hotel too & during the off season. I waitressed, bartended and was a hostess for YEARS so I know it takes nothing to stop over with menus and a little hello. We had about 5-6 different workers either walk by or look right through us. They managed to go over to a table of 6 adults about 3 times (a table that came in after us). We ended up walking out. For the amount of money this hotel charges for a room their restaurant options need to be expanded for families and also need to make sure their employees don't just ignore people. I have very mixed feelings about Hourglass. The food is typically very tasty, a little overpriced but this makes sense for it being Stowe. I have stayed at the Stowe Mountain Lodge for about 5 winters in a row now, and have noticed that the service has gotten progressively worse at Hourglass. In previous years, the wait staff has always been friendly and service has been consistent but sparse. This winter (December 2019) has been by far my worst experience at Hourglass. When first being asked to be seated, the hosts are very disorganized. Once you are seated, it consistently takes the wait staff 20 minutes to even get to your table. We had to get into the habit of knowing everything we wanted to order all at once because it was impossible to get anyone's attention. The wait staff is clearly spread thin (and some of them have been somewhat rude as a result of the stress) and it does not seem like management is doing anything to address this. They are usually busy considering that it is in such a convenient location but they absolutely need to work on improving the service. read more

Terrible. All of the servers were confused. No one to seat you. I had what they told me was a tomato basil bisque, but it had no basil in it and no cream, so it was tomatoes puréed. It was bland and boring even after adding some requested basil and tons of salt. My husband said his chili was okay, but his cornbread was bad. My glass of Malbec was also terrible. Hit and miss. The lounge is cozy and the ambiance is nice but the service is very inconsistent. On some days your order will come reasonably fast, on others - you may have wait for 30 min just to be noticed by a server and another hour for the food to come out. This does not seem to correlate with how busy / crowded the lounge is, just a random inconsistency. The servers appear to try their best in my opinion... Perhaps, there is an operational issue. The food is good (tomato chipotle soup is a great way to warm up). The menu is limited and not all items are available at all times. If you are staying the lodge, you may find yourself bored with the selection after 2-3 days but you cannot beat the convenience and comfort. read more

We have been coming to this lodge for the last 3 years. The service at hourglass has become increasingly frustrating. Depending on who you are or the mood of the hostess the wait can be immediate or over an hour. They push the buffet in solstice but in the afternoon when you want to get back out skiing - this seems gluttonous. There may be a paucity of wait staff but I feel like management should anticipate when there is high occupancy that comes with high season. They should convert solstice to the same hourglass menu and utilize the staff that isn't that busy. read more

Man, I really wanted to love this place. It's in the middle of the lodge and has the potential to be great, but my experience was so dismal it completely ruined the entire resort for me. We came for drinks and even though we asked if we could sit at a table if we were just ordering drinks and they happily said yes, it was painfully apparent by the 2-3 times two different servers asked us what we wanted for food that it was not. Our first round of drinks took at least 15 minutes to get to us and all we had were beers. In cans. Finally we decide to order the $24 cheese plate. The menu said "3 Vermont cheeses" it took a solid 20-30 minutes to get to the table and the server gave no explanation as to what anything was. This was probably the most dismal cheese plate I'd ever ordered and I like to consider myself a cheese plate connoisseur. It consisted of 3 small servings of who the heck knows what cheeses, grapes, 6 Ritz crackers and 2 different tiny smears of spreads. It was really sad. What also was sad was when the server charged my credit card for a different table that was double ours. They corrected it, but it took a solid 15 minutes to get anyone's attention. The place was dead, so why it took so long for everything and for service at all was beyond me. This is a solid 2 hours of my life I'll never get back. The resort itself is absolutely gorgeous, so I hope they manage to get their act together at this restaurant. read more

It's okay. The drink prices are a little ridiculous but the drinks are very good...I don't don't that Bloody Mary is really worth $12, but it's a damn good Bloody Mary. The bar food is pretty good, the prices are utterly preposterous ($17 burger, $16 sandwiches) but it's very tasty (seems to be a running theme...everything is really good but overpriced). I loved the grilled chicken sandwich and my wife recommends the braised pork soft tacos. Also great chowder...having tried both, I can confirm it's NOT the same clam chowder they're serving in Solstice...that stuff is even better than this, which is really good to begin with. For a beautiful resort, this restaurant fell very short. Now reading the reviews, I realized we should have looked these up before going. Firstly, when we sat down, not all in our party were there so she told us she'd come back, which was great. Once she said that it took her 25 minutes to come back. At that point, she asked for a dinner order, very quickly, one person tried to order a drink, and before the rest of us could, she walked away. At that point, things went down very quickly. We caught our server talking to various other workers, coming out of the kitchen laughing, and not available for over 30+ minutes while waiting for drinks which were quite simple I might add. Once we got those, we waited an ADDITIONAL 30 minutes, and then the food was brought out. The appetizer was nowhere to be found, so we told them to forget it, and asked for the manager because at this point there were only TWO TABLES in the restaurant that were full. When we called for the manager, she quickly ran to the table to say "oh what's going on?" when we said, we've waited for a long long time, she said, "well everyone's been waiting." Not sure who that could be since we were one of two tables that were full. She then proceeded to speak negatively to the table behind us, right in front of us. None of us wanted anything besides our food on time, and everyone in our group has worked a service or retail job, we completely understand the stress that service industry jobs can hold, but when someone says "We've been waiting a while" the worst response you could have is "well so has everyone else." read more

We were snowed in last night with bumper to bumper traffic all along Mountain Rd so our best bet for dinner was Hourglass. (Reservations were full at the restaurant inside the lodge). The menu: great. Lots of variety, not just typical bar food. Salads, soups, sandwiches, flatbreads, and main courses all sounded enticing. I have to be honest though, the beet and goat cheese salad I ordered was literally two bites and was extremely over priced for what it was worth. I'm not saying the ingredients were bad, in fact it was all good, but the portion size was terrible for the price. Just stopped in for dinner. We ordered the poutine and it was phenomenal! Beef gravy, cheddar cheese curds, waffle fries, and truffle braised sirloin. The we ordered the "Vermonster Burger". A mammoth burger with 1.5 lbs of burger, thick cut pork belly, solstice signature pot roast, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese. It fed three grown men easily and it was one of the best burgers I've had in Stowe. The fire on the mountain cocktail was also a great bourbon cocktail. We definitely will be back. read more

The temperature in the bar , lobby and attached restaurant was so cold on the recent August night we were there. We came in with a party of 9 for an after dinner drink. The hostess was very accommodating and called someone to light the outdoor firepit for us, although it took at least 20 minutes and all that basically had to be done was flipping a switch. My poor rating is based on the experience I had with the bartender when I ordered drinks at the bar. It was not busy at all and it took quite awhile for me to be acknowledged. I ordered a few drinks and when I realized I could not carry them all, I asked the bartender if I might borrow a tray that was in the service station. He literally shrugged his shoulders and said "I dont care" and turned and walked away. I would have expected he might offer to help me carry the drinks across the dining room to the outside area, Instead I loaded them onto a tray and carried them myself. Cannot help but think as this is considered an upscale resort in the Stowe area that a level of customer service should be a expected. Perhaps training might be in order at least for this one young man working the bar. read more

This bar is located in the lobby of the Stowe Mountain Lodge. A great location at the base of Stowe Mountain, hotel guests have ski in/out convenience. The lodge is a new high-end hotel and this offers a nice setting and some fresh, albeit pricey (as expected) food. I think the burger was $12, damn good too. read more
