Calamari fritti with salsas pomodoro fresco e albicocca agrodolce.
    Stephanie S.

I won a Localvore Insta contest for a gift card for Sotto/Trattoria Delia. I asked another local Italian friend if she'd like to go. We showed up about 6 at Trattoria and the place was packed; I hadn't thought to even make a reservation (I forget what eating out in Burlington on the weekend is like), so as the next seating wasn't available until 9pm, the host graciously offered us seats at the bar or we could head over to Sotto. We figured it'd be easier to chat at a table, so we let him guide us to Sotto instead (they share bathrooms and a menu, although the menu is condensed at the latter). We were in the mood for wine and apps, versus a full meal. We ordered the carciofi grigilia (grilled artichokes), antipasto misto (Italian charcuterie, fresh local cheeses, eggplant caponata, bread and butter pickles, pickled mushrooms, two types bruschetta, one with fresh goat cheese) and calamari fritti which we opted to get with both the salsa de pomodoro fresco and the apricot agrodolce. Everything was delicious and fresh. It was clear the calamari was fresh and hand breaded. The apricot sauce was very good, as was the pomodoro fresco. There was so much food that we had couldn't eat it all. Service was excellent. It is a bit pricey, but the quality merits giving it a go. I'd definitely try and reserve a table at Trattoria some night. It was very warm and cozy with the fireplace and dark wood interior. A great venue for a romantic date night.

Tagliatelle- thinner than expected and a bit dry

I continue my quest for good Italian food in Vermont. While daughter two lives outside of Boston. I know it's not fair. I was coming Into downtown and decided to have dinner. Checking around for interesting places and my local daughter and my neighbors had both recommended this place. It's trendy. I looked it up online and checked out the menu. I was in town early so didn't have to worry about crowds. I got there just a few minutes after opening and got a seat at the VERY SMALL bar. No problem. What I didn't know after looking at their website is that their menu is identical to that of trattoria Delia , their sister restaurant next door. The website is misleading as it shows different menu items. I really wanted the cacio e Pepe on their site. But alas they didn't have it. No worries. The sister restaurant had a nice menu. I went there a couple of times in the past. A long time ago (7 yrs?) they were awesome but later on (4 yrs ago?) they were disappointing. They seem to have their groove back. Sotto is a tiny space that claims to be a wine bar but given their bar is 4 seats, I beg to differ. Everything else is set up for dinner. It's a small restaurant. Intimate - yes. Although when I was there a party of 11 were also there. It wasn't noisy but it definitely has the potential. The din was moderate when I left at 6:20 pm. Ok on to the food. I was alone so couldn't do much in the way of sampling. They had a couple of specials - a squid ink pasta with a mussels fra diavolo sauce which almost won me over. But as I am not ready for summer to end, I chose the tagliatelle with peas and butter and guanciale. I started with the olives which were really nice. I asked the server to pace things as I wanted to finish my Prosecco before my pasta arrived. Alas that did not happen. I know pacing is important and as I do neither dessert nor coffee, (which I told the server), I'm out relatively quickly. At any rate, the pasta arrived with a third of my Prosecco still there. No problem. I chugged it and then set upon my meal. Plus- it was really light and tasty- the flavors were just right Minus - it was more of a linguini than a tagliatelle- quite narrow. Also it was rather dry. I don't like super saucy pasta, but this reflected our current drought...it could use a bit more wine or butter. Service - I had a few folks attending and it was prompt and professional- I cannot say it was friendly. I'll go back and try other things but I'll probably go over to the main restaurant as this place doesn't really have a better value proposition.

    Sotto from the street.

Do I recommend it?! 1000%! It was a weekday night and I headed to the Italian restaurant next door. I was solo but there wasn't a seat available, even at the bar. But the greeter suggested I try their sister restaurant Soto in the basement next door. There is a sign but somehow I'd overlooked it. I walked down the steps to a pretty low key door and walked into a fairly small space with a large table and just a few two/four tops and some bar seating. The large table was full of tech execs sampling the large and well curated wine collection but the bar and other tables were open. This was a much more intimate place and was simply decorated and furnished. They share a kitchen with the place next door but have a simpler menu, though I believe you may be able to punch from the other restaurants menu for certain things, like if you needed a vegetarian or gluten free dish. I was warmly greeted and received my drink while i perused the menu. There was no pressure to place my order so i carefully considered what i wanted. I got the local mushrooms as an appetizer and they were unbelievable. After that I decided to get the special which was veal chop with potatoes. It was a very large and thick chop, cooked to perfection. I thought I'd wind up packing half of it home but it was so delicious that I finished the whole thing, nibbling even the bone. The server was very attentive but also let me have my space. This is a great place for a romantic or quiet dinner or if you want to treat yourself solo. Don't let the modest looking door from the street fool you; enter and prepare yourself for a fantastic meal.

    More wine please!

I really love Sotto Enoteca. It's a wine bar located in a little basement on St. Paul Street, but it also serves small plates of food and has a wide variety of beer and craft cocktail offerings. The setting is small, warm and intimate. Maximum seating capacity is probably around 30 people. Owned by award-winning Trattoria Delia (located just next door), Sotto offers many of the starter items located on Trat's menu. There is a salumi plate, cheese, plate, duck confit, snails. In total there are about 10 small plates to choose from with occasional specials offered. Sotto's wine selection is extensive. Tratorria has won awards for its wines and is showing its affinity for good wines by opening Sotto. Sotto, besides being a place one can just go for a drink to start out or end the evening, can be a dinner destination in and of itself, or serve as a waiting room if you are having dinner at Trattoria next door. The food and drink quality at Sotto is very high. In many ways it reminds me of some of the better Enoteca's I've wandered into while exploring towns in Tuscany and northern Itally. I'm torn between giving Sotto a four or five star review. In my estimation it's five stars, but I realize that it may not be for everyone (not everyone wants to eat snails and have a $10 glass of wine). Also, when it's packed it can be quite noisy and in the winter when the front door opens a cold breeze may blow in and give you a chill. If you are into fine food and enjoy wine and/or beer, you are sure to find something at Sotto that will appeal to you. PS. Sotto doesn't yet have a website. On its Facebook page it links to Trattoria's website, which is a very old one and doesn't seem to mention Sotto at all. Trat should consider contacting Flavor Plate, a local restaurant website company that offers quick and amazing customizable Web templates for just $40 a month; at this point most of the restaurants in town are happy customers.

We were warmly greeted, and they inquired if we were there for a table/bar seating, or the retail shop. We sat at the bar, and there were other customers at tables enjoying a glass and engrossed in conversation. They offer a small snack menu, along with a selection of wines, and they have a good knowledge and will provide counsel on the options. We ordered the ricotta toast and the lonzo, a ham similar to prosciutto. Both were delicious! The lonzo comes with a drizzle of quality olive oil on top, and a sprinkle of salt, and a dab of mustard. The ricotta toast (no pic sorry) was also tasty. The space leans to industrial loft, but is warm and invites conversations and relaxation. The shop also has a retail space, and a monthly wine club subscription is an option. It is separated from the restaurant, but not a quirk of their shop, but archaic Vermont liquor laws. We decide to subscribe and picked up our first selections to take home.

Perfect accompaniments to each plate: lemon and garlic with the fish, cherry conserves with the cheese, etc... We'll be back again and again, with friends in tow.

We had the Margherita, Capricciosa, Caesar salad, and the Nutella pizza and flourless cake for dessert. Kids devoured their Margherita slices and we really enjoyed the acidic, salty, roasted, crusty, chewy, fluffy, perfectly balanced notes of the artichoke, olive, tomato, and cheese Capriciossa. I know Caesar is a boring choice but sometimes the stomach wants what it wants, and this one was worth noting; I especially enjoyed the little nub of chewy pizza dough bread with it. I got it anchovy-less, because I don't love crunching on the little dudes, personally. Accessible entrance for wheels is around the back via a ramp in the alley--there's a doorbell for entry. They provided crayons and a coloring sheet for kids which always wins me over instantly, and were highly aware and educated around food allergies and their menu. 5/5 and an easy recommendation all around.

It didn't take long to identify the state's core competencies: Producing world-class cheese Perfecting brick oven pizza Aggressively curating a very specific political vibe Curiously, only two of those things are edible, and unfortunately, you can't get pizza without being reminded of the third. Also worth noting: I'm not convinced any other style of pizza exists in Vermont. If it's not artisanal, wood-fired, and served on a reclaimed barn board, it apparently doesn't make the cut. So naturally, my brain locked in and I ate pizza two nights in a row like a creature of habit. Night 1: Pizzeria Verità Parking was...aspirationally convenient. After navigating downtown Burlington, which feels like a live-action sociology thesis, I made it inside. Let's address the elephant in the room: the price. With tip, I dropped nearly $30 for what amounted to a personal-sized pepperoni pizza that politely declined to fill me up. I assume part of the cost goes toward sourcing ethically massaged tomatoes or ensuring the mozzarella had a fulfilling upbringing. Now, to be fair, the pizza was excellent. Truly. Great crust, quality ingredients, clearly crafted by someone who cares deeply about their art. But the value? That's where things get a little...Vermont. Delicious? Absolutely. Filling? Not quite. Financially efficient? Only if you measure wealth in vibes. I went in skeptical, left impressed, and still had to consider a second dinner.
