Easy 5 stars for food and friendly, quick service. My wife and I just found out about Houndstooth Kitchen last night even though they've been a round for about 7 years. I'd say HK is a welcome addition to Maitland after moving earlier this year from East End. Food: *Pretzel sticks with jalapeño cheese appetizer - Hot and buttered sticks from local Olde Hearth Bakery with real chopped up cheese and jalapeño. Solid and plentiful. (We were informed that Olde Hearth provides ALL of HK's breads.) *Rueben Panini - loaded full of corned beef with the sauce, pickle, and Swiss cheese complimenting and the marble rye holding together. So good. (I ordered a half so I could also order...) *BBQ Brisket Taco - the brisket is moist and tender; add the apple poppy slaw but mostly the house red and white BBQ sauces (on a headed flour tortilla) and HK sets themselves apart from the plethora of other brisket tacos on O-Town. *Orzo salad - good pesto salad that provided a fresh palate cleanse from one entree to the next (but I'd try something else next time around). *Black Bean Burger - it's huge! And while my wife didn't find the burger seasoned well, it was no matter because the white BBQ sauce brought the taste to completion. Location: One street over from busy 17/92 yet it was quiet this evening given we had the benefit of the entire building between us. Add to the outdoor seating white lights strung across the street and we are anticipating the cooler weather when outdoor eating will be even more pleasant. Mediocre. Some of the food is good and some is really bad. They were out of pork, which eliminated about 4 menu options. Soft pretzel sticks were burnt, had no salt, and pretty flavorless, even with the pimento cheese. Roast beef sandwich was inedible, thick sliced beef was chewy and hard to bite into. Hot dog and chicken pesto sandwich were good though. However, the lady at the counter was not friendly. We felt like we were inconveniencing her by eating at her restaurant. No one greeted us when we walked in, we just walked up and started ordering our food before she said a word to us. We visited this past weekend. Excited to be able to finally make it. Been wanting to come since we saw it for the first time weeks ago. We ordered the loaded tots and 3 sandwiches, one for each. I ordered the caprese sandwich, my friend ordered the tuna melt and my husband order another one but I forgot which one it was that he ordered. I believe is was the roast beef & cheddar. So I really enjoyed my sandwiche with a Tomato basil Bisque soup. It complimented eachother oh so well. Both equally delicious. My friend and I decided to trade half of our sandwiches with eachother. Smart way of trying 2 sandwiches at once. Anyways I really enjoyed the tuna melt very much as well. But if I had to pick I would order the caprese again. But it was a bit expensive for sandwiches that are a bit small. It wasn't too bad but I thought the sandwiches would be a bit bigger. It would have been more satisfying. I want to address a few things. This is one of the best little cafe places I have found. I got the Ruben and the BLT both of with are amazing. The BLT had that amazing thick chewy bacon you want, and the Ruben had the best sauce and the beef was fall apart tender. The place it self is so fun and they love your dogs. They actually have a wall of pictures up. The staff were so nice and they greeted us and took our orders with big smiles. I highly recommend this place, especially on Sunday when you can enjoy the farmers market near by. read more

This week was my first time there. It is a cute, little lunch spot and the food is good. It was a little smaller and more intimate than anticipated, but they have seating outside too, luckily. It is also a little pricier than one would expect for soup/sandwich/salad eatery. Headed to the East End Market for the Audubon Customer Appreciation weekend and Houndstooth was doing a pop up BBQ tables. There has a smoker set up outside and you could smell the delicious from the parking lot. We wondered inside first to get a couple of adult beverages and a seating space. I then headed back out to their table. The menu was short and sweet. I opted for a dozen wings with two sides. I got cheese grits and baked beans. Everything was served up quickly and they had a square device so they could accept credit cards. The wings were perfectly smoked and they included both a white and red bbq sauce for dipping. The grits were cheesy but not in an overpowering way. The beans were phenomenal and a perfect side for a BBQ dish. Overall: A Great food, good service! read more

I took a friend to East End Market for the first time this weekend. While we were there we decided we needed a snack to hold us over until our late dinner reservation. After a trip around the market we decided on the special of the day from Houndstooth - turkey, bacon, pepperjack cheese and white BBQ sauce on a pretzel roll. We got the sandwich hot along with an Original Sin Pear Cider from Local Roots and went outside to enjoy our snack. It was heavenly! We split the sandwich and the cider and it was the perfect amount. The sandwich was delicious and so was the cider! The sandwich was a little on the pricey side, but I expect that when I'm at East End Market so I wasn't really surprised. Such a hidden gem in the new Maitland City Center. The owner, David and his wife Monica are just the sweetest people ever and boy do they know their food! They turn classic sandwiches, soups and sides into something new with fresh ideas and have some fun and creative twists on staples items. Pretty much EVERYTHING is made in house and you can certainly taste the flavors and passion with ever bite. I was luck enough to catch a special they had, a pulled pork sandwich on a brioche bun. The pork was smoked for 11 HOURSSSSSS. Talk about heavenly. Im also a huge fan of soups so the turkey chili did NOT disappoint as it was filling and had loads of flavor. Food seems a bit overpriced for what you get. Although they do offer gluten free options, I still felt a bit limited on what I could order. I asked if I could get any of the hot sandwich options on a lettuce wrap (not everyone loves tuna or egg salad) and I was told no, so a star off for being non flexible and not even attempting to cater to your consumer when the store was empty. Salad options aren't as interesting as the sandwich options so I see no need to revisit here. read more

We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and were blown away at how delicious a simple sandwiches could be! The Turkey club was insanely flavorful without having to have condiments be the reason. It's the meat itself! They do the roasting/smoking in house and it seriously shows. My husband had the runa melt which I have never been a fan of until now. They do it right and with a much more suitable cheese than standard American or yellow cheddar. Picked up lunch here the other day and was amazed by the deliciousness of this meal! I ordered over the phone and the woman who helped me was super friendly and helpful. I was considering the tomato bisque soup and asked what their soup of the day was. She said it was French Onion and said I had to try it. I went with her recommendation and ordered the Roast Beef melt with Jalapeño Pimento Cheese to go with it. I parked outside of the restaurant for curbside pickup and the chef who brought my order said he put a Gruyere crouton in there. He recommended putting it in a bowl and pouring the French Onion soup on top. Genius!! The cheesy crouton melted into a perfect complement to the flavorful French Onion soup. The sandwich was an explosion of yummy flavors in my mouth! The jalapeño pimento cheese is delicious and pairs perfectly with the roast beef. Cannot wait to have lunch here again soon!! read more

This was our first experience at the legendary East End Market, and it wasn't bad. The husband ordered a roast beef sandwich on brioche with potato salad, and I ordered the vegan curried lentil soup. I had a bite of the husband's sandwich, which was incredibly delicious. To be fair, if you screw up a sandwich on brioche, you should just quit, right? Definitely recommendable. The potato salad was also good; reminiscent of the recipe we make in our own home. It wasn't great though, and my husband didn't feel compelled to eat even half of it. My vegan curried lentil soup was also a little disappointing. The curry flavor was nearly undetectable and I felt the soup overall lacked seasoning. I would not order it again. I will surely be back and may hit up Houndstooth again, but will probably sample the other places before returning. read more

I'll admit that I ended up buying lunch at Houndstooth when the line at Skyebird was too long for a salad. I don't know why, but their storefront didn't initially call to me, but holy smokes was I glad that I ended up there! I ordered their special of the day: Roasted Vegetable Sandwich which includes Eggplant, Zuchinni, Squash, Red Onion, Mushrooms, Yellow Tomatoes, & Sun-Dried Tomato Spread pressed on Foccacia Roll. It was delicious! I also grabbed a large container of their curried split pea soup for dinner/second lunch snack (don't judge me!). It was surprising and inventive. I've never spiced a split pea soup with curry, but it was subtle and added some complexity to the soup. Mmmmm! The chef, David, explained that he used to have a restaurant in Atlanta, but had to close when the diner next door went up in flames and took his restaurant with it. I loved how open he was to talking to me while I was waiting on my order (there was someone else working the register). I left off a star because they could work on the look of their storefront. It sucks to say, but they're competing with some super stylish merchants at the market and this would really help then stand out. Otherwise, loved everything! read more

What a delightful lunch spot, located in the fabulous East End Market. I ordered the Chicken Avocado Sandwich, which was perfectly scrumptious. This sandwich was a perfect array of grilled chicken, avocado, roasted roma tomato vinaigrette, Asiago cheese, pressed on Cuban bread. The portion size was so filling that I had left overs for later. The ingredients were super fresh, which makes any sandwich super awesome. My daughter ordered the Tomato Basil Bisque, a vegetarian, gluten free option. She pretty much devoured the soup. A sandwich meal will cost you anywhere between 10.00 to 12.00, a bowl of soup will cost you 5.00. The staff was funny and friendly and definitely made my day a whole lot brighter.
