Ordered the "best chicken in town", - the chickens are very small, and the 1/4 chicken breast I had was noticeably dry. The seasonings and flavor are very good though. But I have much better from any Peruvian chicken place. Had the zucchini in tomato sauce as one side an it was outstanding. Pasta salad was average. Pita bread seemed dry. Hummus was very good. Potatoes had great flavor but also a little dry. Rice pudding dessert was very tasty. The restaurant space is filled with pictures of local friends, families, and events, combined with Greek landscapes and spaces. Order at the counter, listen for your number, and grab your delicious chicken. The staff is always happy to serve and help the newbies decide on what's best. I have not been to Athena's in a SUPER long time (like 25 years) and I really don't know why because we used to come here all the time! The food js just as good as I remember ... and my palate has grown up a bit so things I would not try before I was excited to try now. Like the rice wrapped in grape leaves. The pita with hummus was excellent! The olives are soaked in wine and you can taste that delicious wine let me tell you. Soooooo good. The kids meal is a great size and my ten year old DEVOURS every bite. The chicken just falls apart it's so tender and perfectly seasoned. The Greek salad is big and the interesting thing about is the smear of potato salad on the bottom. I like that. I will be running back to Athena way sooner than 25 years I can tell you that. I'm shocked I've never rated Athena. It's an old-time Winter-Park-area staple and it deserves its slot. Been there over the years and eaten many a good lunch--(delicious chicken, stuffed grape leaves, spanakopita). Today I had the special which was grilled tilapia with olive oil and garlic and I will say that it was probably the best tilapia i've ever had and I was not expecting that. My friend didn't like the "texture" of the potatoes so I ate all of hers in addition to mine. They are not like the roast potatoes you get everywhere else--they have lemon and they grow on you until you dream about them at night. Trust me on this. Is their baklava great? No. But that little carrot cake thing was delicious and the coffee was quite decent! This is basically a diner--seating inside and out, casual and easy. Great place to have in town. read more

Five stars for flavor, price and speed! I love coming to grab a quick lunch at Athena's and have frequented it for the last decade or so. The BBQ chicken Pita and the zesty feta chicken pita are my go-tos! I also love their Mediterranean salad and regular gyros as well. I also just love how affordable and quick this is for lunch and super filling. I will comment that The service is not what stands out here - after all it is a walk up counter to order so my interactions are limited. As far as the ambiance goes, this isn't that kind of place and will feel a little chaotic; But this is exactly what I expect out of this type of restaurant. I used to work next door and would frequent the establishment 2-3x per week because their dark 1/4 chicken was cheap, but also delicious. Athena is a staple around Maitland. Classic locally owned Greek restaurant with a great chicken meal. I got the roasted chicken and a couple sides my 1st time. They have the chicken ready to go, so it makes coming for lunch a breeze. My last visit, I had the chicken Gyro and I loved that. Hot, fresh and authentic. You know it's going to be a good place when 90% of the restaurant is over the age of 60 directly after opening, you know that crowd is picky and won't eat just anywhere ;). A lot of people seem to be ordering food from here for delivery because we saw a steady stream of pickups while we dined in. The food was meh at best and nothing anyone in our party would go back again for. The mousaka was not very well seasoned and tasted like reheated two-day old leftovers. The gyro was ok but there was little meat to salad" ratio. A far better option is the Mediterranean deli on Fairbanks. I didn't realize this business was here but quickly found out it has quite a following for good reason. I ordered the quarter chicken platter with dark meat, green beans, and rice pilaf. My husband ordered the roast chicken gyro with potato salad. We were so impressed with the quality and flavors of the simple meals. The crispy skin was a delight and the potato salad was exactly how my husband hoped it would be. Normally he goes for traditional gyro meat, but because chicken is a specialty of their's, he gave it a try and found it was the best chicken gyro he's had. We also got to try the baklava which was sweet and flakey. I was especially pleased that the dessert wasn't too firm and could be split up with a fork. I was in the area and my family and I decided to visit since half of us got into the Yelp elite event for their specials. First off , the celebration was for the 35years of being a great franchise with delicious food items. They are a hidden gem in the wall featuring roasted chicken with delicious things of Greek spices! They were very friendly , gave us our order within 10 mins and friendly staff all around. Ambiance was a bit more quiet, but I believe that it is a hole in the wall that not many customers recognize. I personally ordered the Chicken Gyro and it was delicious with a mixture of Pico, onions,and of course grilled chicken with this white yogurt sauce. It was delicious and definitely was enough to satisfy me. Parking was a bit challenging because of how small the parking lot was, but we found some additional spaces in the back. We really enjoyed this spot and appreciate Yelp for giving them a shout out because they definitely were worth the drive and it is delicious. This time though, I was needing to cater lunch for 15 people and was stoked that Athena had catering info (with prices) clear and available on their website menu. I ordered the assorted sandwich platter (serves 15-20 and costs $65), the ethnic platter (including tabouli, hummus, feta, olives, pita- costing $75), and the spanakopita ($65/tray for approx 20 people). The assorted sandwich platter was perfect and the fillings were plentiful. The spanakopita was a big winner with the attendees and it was hot and right out of the oven! The ethnic platter was huge and filled with fresh goodies- I saw tons of folks mixing the hummus and tabouli and I continued to get great feedback. Overall, I'm always happy to spend money locally and this family-owned biz deserves all the love.
