I was very underwhelmed with the holiday special meal of Corned Beef & Cabbage for $19.80. There were 5 thin slices of corned beef, 4 small potatoes and barely a half cup of cabbage which was disappointing. There dish lacked flavor and did not seem to be seasoned. Houlihan's is Houlihan's. Prepped entrees that arrive quickly. They are adequately tasty, nothing special. Drinks are good, i love the margaritas on the rocks with grand Marnier..TOP SHELF. Service is always pleasant and the restaurant is clean, pleasant and family friendly. I really enjoy the house salad which is always fresh and crispy. The breadsticks are a plus. Came in around 7PM for a last dinner with my family (Sister, Brother in Law, Mother in Law, Mother, and baby Nephew) before my brother in law was stationed in Syria. We ordered the Wings & Things Sampler, Calamari, and Spinach and Artichoke Dip. Everything was well until I bit into a stuffed shroom and found a metal wire inside. Luckily I felt it before swallowing. They explained that it came from the fryer basket that was broken, which they immediately threw out. Though I originally wanted to order the Fish and Chips for my entree, I was kinda wary about their fryer afterwards. Being that I was with my family including my two year old nephew, I was pretty shocked that this happened. At least it was me and none of them. I've been working as a chef in the food industry for 5 years now and they honestly handled the situation well. They deducted the dish off the final bill and then some. We went to Houlihan's before watching a movie at the Showplace theater. Reda was our server both times and both times she made sure our food came out fast and on time so we wouldn't be late watching the movie. She was attentive, helpful, informative, and friendly. Reda is the type of person where she makes you feel like family, and you came to visit her at home. The food was just the perfect portion size for the price that you are paying. Upon arriving- we were not greeted right away and when we were, it was blah. We were seated and again - it took a while before out waiter came and - he even didn't seem enthusiastic to serve us. Just blah. Nothing excited . I tried the Pama Martini which was pretty good. I wasn't in the mood to eat an entree and had the calamari which was just ok. The service is very slow here! Bartenders are too busy making orders for other tables, they don't pay any attention to us at the bar! The food is sub par, but there are a few good options. We came here while visiting NYC. Our hotel was in Secaucaus so this place came up as a good place to dine. After going somewhere else and sitting for 20min with no service. Our server was Jeff. He was a delight, was on time, was attentive and accommodating. Servers like that are the reason ppl return to establishments. The food was good. I had scallops that were seasoned perfectly accompanied by asparagus, that i was kind of disappointed. They didn't cut the stalk that was kind of weird. I just didn't eat it that far down. Looking a place to eat after catching a movie at the Kerasotes theatre, my friends and I took a chance that Houlihans wouldn't have a lengthy wait at 930 on a Saturday night. Surprisingly, we were seated within 5 minutes. We nabbed an order of stuffed mushrooms for the table, and I got a southwest wrap for myself. The food came out quick (although it took a few minutes after the mushrooms arrived to get plates), but the fare is nothing special. While the mushrooms are always a hit (stuffed with a creamy cheese sauce, fried crispy, and served with a horseradish dip), the wrap was falling apart and lacked much flavour. This was a new chain restaurant for me. We got take out from here and had never tried it before. We ordered a bunch of appetizers. The stuffed shrooms were fancier than I was expecting. I thought they would be traditional mushroom caps with a light breading but they were actually batter fried balls stuffed with mushrooms and cheese. They came with a sauce similar to tartar sauce. Very crispy and the cheese melts inside so it's a nice, complex set of textures to bite into. We also got nachos. This is always a dicey move for takeout. They gave us a huge portion, which was great. I would've appreciated more toppings, especially cheese and jalapeños on the chips. The guacamole also wasn't the best, but these were still satisfying. The mozzarella sticks were classic and tasty. I also really enjoyed the buffalo cauliflower. The sauce was tangy and creamy and the cauliflower tasted awesome. Overall, I liked this place. I was not expecting to be impressed when I walked in on a Tuesday night the week of Thanksgiving, but here we are. I did the prix fixe menu with ahi tuna, 4oz steak and the butter cake. I don't know how they managed to get char on a 4oz steak cooked to medium rare, but it was awesome. The waiter pulled off ninja refills on my club soda with lemon and gave us updates on our food when he dropped by the table. It was easily the best $20 meal I've ever had. We always love going to Houlihans in Secaucus. We like the food but especially like the people that work there. If we want the menu changed a little because we cannot eat this or that, they are always willing and get it right and the bartenders even remember how we like it. Sometimes the bar area is crowded and Ann will help us find a spot which is not easy. The Managers James Ann Drew and Corinna are always very helpful. Our bartenders Angela Nicole Reuben Kaitlin Gina and Frankie who just started are very friendly and helpful beyond words. I didn't even know Houlihans was still around. Once I found out I had to check it out. I'm glad I did. I have a weak spot for these types of restaurants and Houlis was always a family fave. The service was better than I remember. The server was attentive and kind enough to offer suggestions when I didn't know what I wanted. I decided on a bunch of appetizers.
