Wow. Just wow. I saw this hotel years ago and have always wanted to stay here. My husband surprised me for our anniversary with a night here. Yippee! It's equestrian themed with all the 16 rooms named after famous horses. Ours was Starling. It was a wonderful spacious room with a big balcony. I didn't even know about the S'mores butler. What?!?! They have a s'mores menu, and you pick which one you want, and they make it in front of you at one of the fireplaces in the courtyard. The Pony Club is where breakfast is served (delicious) and it's also the bar (which we didn't get to try, this time). All the staff was wonderful and seemed super happy to be there. I haven't even gotten to the best part about the hotel. IT'S SUPER DOG FRIENDLY! We brought our furbaby and there was a dog bed and a tennis ball in the room, along with two large bowls. They provide a large blanket to put on the bed if your furbaby likes to sleep in the bed with you. What a wonderful experience, worth every penny, and I'm hoping to go back soon!

Such a gorgeous hotel to stay for our 25 year anniversary!!!! Amazing and kind staff! You can also tell they like and respect each other. We had a drink & the grilled cheese and fries at the Pony Club bar too & it was so good! Clean room, they gifted us a bottle of champagne. A guy makes yummy smores by the fireplace at night. Really yummy & fresh boutique made to order breakfast (included) every morning. Love love loved & will be back!!

Cute hotel in city center. Close to all restaurants. Don't expect too much. It's an Inn at best. They're always booked because it's very small. Rooms are very outdated. Water pressure was scarce. Pillows were horrible. Not luxurious. For breakfast you have to mark what you want on a piece of paper and it was served on a tray.... Reminded me of hospital.... Staff was very friendly and nice.

A magical fantastical treasure trove of a Spanish castle transformed into a modern hotel. This is a gorgeous place with stunning and detailed architecture, beautifully decorated with a keen eye for detail. An expansive yet cozy room with a little ledge/bench/alcove to sit and a bathroom with all conveniences, e.g. I appreciate the make-up mirror. The patio with four separate chairs and umbrella for shade. Upon arrival, a welcome little bag of cookies ... they have not only a bar on premises, but also a library with complementary candy--no joke, a full on candy station you can fill into little baggies and be on your way, for you know, when there candy attack hits :-) We came during a heat wave when it was 110 degrees, and they had a covered car port so it could stay cooler. Believe it or not, they have a "S'Mores Butler," where every evening, they make your choice of twelve different types! Such a unique fun little treat. Also, an early morning coffee hour, finished by a complementary upgraded elevated breakfast--a huge assortment of grains, cereals, yogurt, fresh berries plus teas and coffees, and breads, bagels, pastries, egg dishes, quiche ... you can eat anywhere on the property. Including they'll bring it up to your room. Fill out a little sheet and it's a full service experience. The prices are on par with other hotel of this caliber in the area. The customer service unfailingly gracious and super sweet and attentive!

So, I think this place is kind of in a league of its own. To illustrate, let me tell you that I was meeting a friend for dinner the one night I was in town and the property looked impressive enough while I was checking in that, rather than have a second drink at the restaurant we were eating at, we decided to go back to the hotel to have a drink. We picked up a couple of Old Fashions in the small Cheval bar and I asked the bartender if we could take them to "the library" and the bartender said "of course and feel free to leave your glasses in there and I'll come get them later". On our way to the library (see pix), we passed people in a semi-circle of Adirondack chairs sitting around an impressive fire (in an impressive fireplace) outdoors in the courtyard (being served s'mores of various flavors). We passed other people around a second fireplace enjoying a bottle of wine, wrapped in hotel-supplied blankets. (The people, not the wine, were wrapped in the blankets) There were little signs on the tables in all of the little nooks and gathering areas asking guests to keep their voices down after 10 PM. (Well, they did but I'm guessing it's not much of an issue given that all the guests are of an age group that traditionally eat dinner at 4:15.) Anyway, we landed at the library which we had to ourselves for about 30 minutes and sat in two comfy chairs, sipping our OFs with our feet up on ottomans, and I thought, well, I picked the right hotel this time. I think I heard that this hotel has 16 rooms. I probably saw 8 to 10 people on duty when I was checking out in the morning. That is a big staff to be on duty at once for a hotel their size, I think. Anyway, room was great, too...clean, plenty of towels, nice coffee set-up. Staff were all great, from Jordan on the phone to Trinity showing me around. So, is it worth spending $555 for one night in Paso? (This was a smaller room with one king or Queen bed, probably about 350 sq feet with a small patio area). That's a personal choice but, to me, yes, worth it. Any cons? I had to kill at least 10 mosquitos in the room before going to sleep that night. Just the time of year? Maybe have some mosquito zappers? Maybe have someone come in a de-bug before guests check in? Anyway, that one-off situation could maybe have happened at any hotel and the rest of the experience was great.

In the summer of 2020 I took a road trip that had me (finally) exploring the cities along CA's famous 1/101 drive between LA and SF. One of the cities I explored was Paso Robles, a wine region with a prestige comparable to Napa/Sonoma. While the main draw of the city is the wineries, I wanted to stay more central to the city and use my hotel as "home base" when going to and from the wineries. According to research, Hotel Cheval is one of the best hotels to stay in the area. - Location: One block from the park. Smack dab in the middle of downtown. - Accolades: #15 Tripadvisor's Best Small Hotels in the US, #8 USA Today 10Best Reader's Choice. - SMORES BAR. Specifically the third option was the one that "sealed the deal" for me as I love smores. PARKING: Across the street from the hotel. EVs, however, can park at one of three stalls with a designated EV charger right near the entrance to the lobby (Level 2/240 volt). They can also reserve this space for you if you will be driving around Paso but will be returning later (note: please drive responsibly!) If you own a Tesla there is also a supercharger along the 46 - 28 v3 stalls for faster charging. The Cheval is Paso's prestige hotel. Even during COVID I booked my room at least 2 months in advance as it was during Labor Day weekend. The going rate starts from around $350/night for the cheapest room. During the weekends it's a minimum 2-night stay. When you book half of the total cost is charged at the time of booking. Was the stay worth the price? tl;dr answer: yes. A huge part of that was due to the friendly and hospitable staff. Two people stood out: Troy and Anthony. Not only did both provide excellent service (smores night 1/little requests, Pony Club bar), they were so down-to-earth that I could also be friends with them should I ever see them again. The front desk staff were also very kind as not only did they ensure a seamless check-in/out experience, they also managed to book me a chauffeur for my 2nd wine tasting day. Each of the 16 rooms is named after a horse. Mine was the "Rinaldo", named after the horse of the owner's wife. The room was very spacious and i liked the vaulted ceiling as a touch. Beds were some of the most comfortable I've ever slept in for any hotel. The bottled water provided was very fancy - Troy even packed some for me when I checked out. Room and bathroom were clean. A fridge was provided later in the stay to store sandwiches. PONY CLUB One of the two major highlights of my stay. During the mornings it's where breakfast is served. Even during COVID the menu looks pretty good for normal breakfast offerings and during the weekend the menu's upgraded to include omelettes and pancakes. The meals were filling and scrumptious, which is much appreciated especially when there is a packed-full day of wine tasting. From Thurs-Sat the Pony Club opens up for hotel guests. You can get bottles, glasses and flights of various wines all over the Central Coast. Anthony gave me my very first introduction to the beauty that is Paso wine. SMORES BAR Second major highlight. Every night from dusk to around ~9 someone will make smores out by the fireplace. They have a menu with several types of smores based on base chocolate and other additional fillings. I am a huge sucker for smores that even in 100+F weather I had my daily smore *every* night. Favorites were the silver (mint chocolate) and bullseye (peanut butter). *** Hotel splurges are a new concept for me personally since during any trip I like to be out and about and spend as little time as possible in a hotel room. With the temps being 100+ almost every day of my stay in retrospect I was glad I picked a hotel that I could just stay in. For my first trip to Paso when I wasn't wine tasting or eating at a restaurant I was in my room, AC on full blast catching up on my streaming shows. On subsequent Paso trips I will highly consider the Cheval for future stays. Many thanks to the staff for your kind hospitality.

For my Wife's Birthday this past November, we booked our first trip to Paso Robles…read more To be perfectly honest... I don't know why, but I always thought that Paso Robles or "Paso" as it's referred to, was some Podunk town that just wasn't worth stopping for. Yeah, I've passed it so many times while traveling North on "THE 101" or simply "101" as they refer to it in NorCal.... ;) (IYKYK) And all those times I've passed through, I've never once thought about pulling off the freeway to see what Paso was all about. Well, just like Julia Robert's character said in Pretty Woman while shopping on Rodeo Drive.... "Big Mistake. Big. HUGE!" Yeah, just like that sales clerk in Pretty Woman I too made a HUGE mistake! Plot Twist: I am the Good Looking Not Quite the Silver Fox Richard Gere of this story. =) ----So let's break down Paso & The Ava Hotel---- For my wife's Birthday Weekend, we made reservations at... The Ava Hotel Paso Robles. Mind you, we left mid-day from our home and by the time we arrived to Paso and pulled into the Hotel parking lot, it was already dark, but right away I could tell that the Hotel my wife booked us was Top Notch. First Impression: Sheesh, my wife sure knows how to spoil herself for HER Birthday weekend. Haha. Once parked, I had my wife and 3 girls head into the lobby out of the cold while I lugged what felt like 12 suitcases... We were only there for three nights; do you really need a suit case just for your change of shoes?? Gotta love Girls... Plot twist: The suitcase with the extra shoes.... WAS MINE!!!!!! Jk, maybe, not really, I'll never tell... =) Upon checking in, I immediately noticed how Great the staff was; Kind, Welcoming and from the looks of the place, even at night, I just knew we were going to enjoy our weekend stay here. ----The Room---- Everything you'd expect, but More! We had 2 comfy Queens, a large screen TV, a mini fridge, a clean bathroom and a Great standalone shower! Being that this hotel is Brand New, everything was clean and felt nearly unused which really made for an enjoyable stay. The next morning, my wife's actual Birthday, we got dressed, headed downstairs and celebrated with a Birthday Mimosa from their Lobby Bar. It was the perfect start to our day and to my wife's Special Day From there we headed out to explore Downtown Paso Robles which BTW, The Ava Hotel is what I would call the start of the Downtown area so it's literally the PERFECT place to stay if you, yourself come to Paso Robles one day. And to those still with us, Remember earlier when I said I made a "Big Mistake. Big. Huge!" By simply thinking that Paso Robles was some Podunk, no-nothin town that wasn't worth exiting the freeway for?? Well, I'll be the 1st to admit. I was wrong!!! Paso is one of my new favorite Central Coast towns that I can't wait to come back to. The fun little shops, the great eateries, Wine, more Wine, Did I mention there's Wine? Yeah, loads and loads of world-renowned wineries specializing in French Reds, but they've got whites too so don't stress. Not a wine person? More of a beer drinker? Paso's Got You!! Come check out Firestone Walker Brewing Co., home of the "805" beer; the regions Phone Area Code. Yeah, drink local baby!! So after enjoying breakfast at the Cowgirl Cafe (Epic Review coming soon), we went to the downtown park at let our kids play with the locals. We then hit several of the eclectic shops, including a local bookstore where my wife was like a kid in a candy store and The Spice of Life Tea Shop which I fell in love with (reviews of everywhere we went NEXT, so stay tuned) and finally made our way back to The Ava to take a break and rest our pups (our feet). Upon walking back to The Ava Hotel, I couldn't help but be in Awe of this well manicured, architecturally forward, beautifully designed building. To be honest, It looks and it feels more like a Resort and I felt so spoiled to be apart of its beginning days and I'm proud to give it the 5 stars it deserves. So... What have we learned?? Step 1: Book a room at the Ava Hotel. Step 2: Put your wife's name on the luggage tag of your suitcase for the extra shoes you really brought. Step 3: Bring one empty suitcase for all the Romantasy books your wife's gonna buy at Spare Time Books! To Paso.... To The Ava Hotel... I can't wait to come back!

Having stayed at both, I really appreciate how each property has its own personality. The Pismo spot wins for location alone, sitting right in front of the iconic pier with those unbeatable ocean views. But the Paso Robles location brings a completely different kind of charm--tucked right within walking distance of all the local shops, tasting rooms, and downtown gems. We upgraded to a suite this time, and it was 100% worth it. The private patio was such a standout feature, opening directly to the pool area--perfect for a relaxed morning coffee or an easy evening dip. Even better, it had direct access to one of their on-site restaurants, which made everything feel seamless and a little extra indulgent. The overall vibe is fun, stylish, and thoughtfully designed without trying too hard. You can tell they put effort into creating an experience, not just a place to sleep. Between the prime location, unique room features, and consistent quality across both properties, this boutique hotel brand has officially won me over. I'll definitely be back--whether it's beachside or wine country.

We stayed at another converted motel in Paso on our last visit (Farmhouse - which we loved) but we wanted to be a bit closer to the square so we decided to try Stables Inn. Now you do get exactly what it looks like in their photos - which is fine. But just the quality of everything isn't the best. The rooms are small and the bedding and finishes are just not great quality. The bathroom very tiny, no working exhaust fan and the room itself just had one tiny window so it just felt a bit claustrophobic for two people. The staff experience was a bit mixed and could use some polishing. The positives: You are walking distance to the square. There is an interior common area which is a nice lounge. The weather out was awful so we escaped and hung out in the lounge for a bit to get out of our room. They do have an outside common area as well but you're literally on the side of a main road on an 'island' in the middle of the parking lot. I am not sure even in good weather I'd feel comfortable sitting there. If being walking distance to the square is a priority, and you aren't spending much time in your room this might be fine for you. We ended up staying our third night at the Farmhouse Motel which is just a bit further down the road and couldn't recommend it more. Everything is so well done and priced very comparably.
