We've stayed at Hotel Cheval on numerous occasions and it never disappoints. The rooms are spacious, warm, comfortable and well appointed. The location is close to the town square/park and the most concentrated group of restaurants in Paso, which makes it a great home base for a Paso visit. The service is great and very friendly. Susan is a great source for recommendations to local wineries, restaurants and things to do in the area and always welcoming when you run into her at the property. The coffee and breakfast service is a great way to start the day and they have three EV chargers available in their parking area. Very dog friendly. Don't miss out from the outdoor fireplace in the courtyard. Highly and unconditionally recommended. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Cheval for 4 days in April 2023. We had a wonderful stay in a lovely, quiet room, assisted by the most attentive staff. When we checked in, there were cookies, champagne, and chilled glasses in the room. We had a delicious breakfast every morning, before venturing out to the wineries. The Hotel Cheval's amazing concierge, Dorine, made all our wine tasting and dinner reservations. We recommend the Hotel Cheval highly and cannot wait to return! read more

Such a lovely place. I love discovering unique boutique hotels that live up to all the hype. The staff is superb, the rooms are beyond well appointed-don't get me started on the bed and and fluffiest duvet I have ever seen, the breakfast buffet was fantastic but the nightly courtyard S'mores are totally over the top! When the staff heard my husband wasn't into wine at all a chilled 6 pack of Coronas arrived at our room. Very nice touch . Couldn't be happier. If you like staying at Four Seasons or St Regis hotels and expect 5 star service and accommodations you will be enchanted with the Hotel Cheval. read more

I was staying in Paso Robles and wanted to check this hotel out. In every city I visit, I stay at fine hotels, sometimes roam around, eat there, and relax; it's been acceptable everywhere I go. On one night, I visited hotel cheval, opened the front door, and asked the arrogant girl at the front desk if they had a restaurant, she said NO, AND WE COULDNT EVEN COME IN IF WE WERE NOT A GUEST. Really? I've been to the best cities in America and have never been told this, and a hotel in Paso Robles is acting all elitist for me? You've got to be kidding me. This hotel is small, and in my opinion, absurdly overpriced. I'll never stay here as long as I live. No thank you. $400 for a small hotel when I can pay less and stay somewhere better? I have options and don't need to put up with the attitude of those in an ordinary city like Paso Robles. GOOD BYE AND GOOD RIDDANCE read more

Location, luxury & convenience! The BEST hotel in Paso Robles! It is right smack in the middle of it all. You can walk to all the shops and restaurants. I loved it! Breakfast is included and served everyday in the Pony Bar (Cheval's onsite bar) They will help you with whatever plans you want to make. Our room was just perfect: nice bed, high end sheets, great pillows, well appointed bathroom. This hotel hits all the marks. So charming and romantic. We spent two nights here mid week and the town was not too busy - just right - very relaxing. read more

Been wanting to stay here for years, a little pricey, but we decided to splurge. Checked in and the room smelled of strong bleach, we opened the windows and then it smelled of strong mold...like super strong mold. Asked for a fan...they gave us a heater...then gave us a fan. Had to have all the windows open and the fan running, and it still was terrible...like very bad, like don't stay here, We were only there for 2 days, we toughed it out. We told the front desk and they seemed not to care, said no one else complained..like we were bothering them. Super yucky, they gave us a discount so instead of 1500 it was 1200....such a deal for a motel 6 room! They did give us a can of febreeze, though it was not strong enough for mold smell. blech. Manager seemed nice....though not a lot of fiscal concern that our room sucked. read more

Really beautiful building in a perfect location to visit Paso Robles. Quality of decor and everything in the room was fantastic. The central courtyard was so beautiful as well. My two things keeping me from five stars and staying in the same room (Feathers) again are other guests enjoying the courtyard for a talk at night kept us up quite late (the courtyard catches the sound quite effectively and the room windows face the courtyard), and the bathroom sink is ridiculously high (my wife is 5 feet tall and the sink is at her chest height - she had trouble washing her face and needed a stool like a child. Beautiful design that isn't particularly functional.). The staff here is perfect, nice, friendly and professional. I'll probably stay here again but will ask for a room with windows that don't face the courtyard and probably an ADA room to get a reasonable height on the sink. read more

I tried to make a reservation for 4th of July weekend (my nephew is getting married) but this beautiful hotel was booked. Erin, at the hotel tried to help me every way possible to make it work and even recommended a few places to check on in town. I can't tell you how impressed I am with her and this hotel. When they have a room available and I am too, I'll be there! CONGRATS for having a team member that is that accommodating and customer service centric...Hotel Cheval ...............if she were in the bay area, we would beg her to come to work for us! read more

Sadly my husband and I won't be returning to this hotel we have been going to for 8 years. we paid 600 for a room that reeked of fireplace smoke and had a huge gap in the door way. I have asthma and so my night was very bothersome because the smoke made me sick. Not only that the front desk lady when we checked in was rude and unhelpful. Please think twice before you pay a butt load of money when the place has gone down hill. read more

Our first time staying downtown and an excellent experience. The service is above and beyond, it's more than just a hotel room. The courtyard, library, Pony Club bar, you are made to feel welcome. Welcome, comfortable, and relaxed. We stayed in a luxury room on the second floor. I'd guess all the rooms are great regardless of the level--if you can deal with the ridiculously high sink in the bathroom. Seriously, that should be changed. Very impressive breakfast options (and thankfully it's not a buffet). The s'mores are definitely worth trying (there's a menu of choices!). Everything is far beyond a hotel stay. I highly, highly recommend staying here if you able. read more

Love this boutique hotel, wouldn't stay anywhere else in Paso Robles. My wife and I stayed here with another couple to do some wine touring. It was amazing. * The rooms are amazing, make sure you get the suite with the window bench. * They have a s'mores roasting every night so save dessert for sitting in front of one of the outdoor fire places, being cozy and having someone hand craft s'mores for you * The Hotel is in downtown so you can walk to anywhere you want for dinner, lunch or everyone's favorite Brunch. * Parking on the street could not have been easier and they also have a small parking garage under the hotel (only 4-5 Cars) so if you want one of those you might be out of luck. We parked right in front of the hotel on the street and it was perfect. * they have a great lounge connected to hotel and have great ipa's and of course, wine * They have free wine tastings in the library around 5 pm everyday during summer and every Thursday off-season **pro tip: if you just came back from amazing wine tasting at Daou or Justin skip the library as it has sub-standard wines and more of a five buck chuck * Grab some fresh brewed coffee in the AM for free in the hotels small lobby. I will definitely come back here, now one of our favorite place in CALIFORNIA read more

High-end boutique hotel this place is a hidden gem. Excellent service and uber style is what you can expect. Although that all comes with a price and a whole lotta attitude. I found the staff to be a bit privileged and snotty albeit in a nice way (you know how that is...smile with an eye roll). The breakfast was nice although was unattended when I arrived with juices and other areas needing replenishment. The complementary evening s'more experience was a wonderful romantic treat. Our Smore-ellier was really nice and did a great job. Goes great with a bottle of wine in front of a personalized fireplace. Rooms was high-end and comfortable with a great shower. The attached bar is worth a visit but again comes with a bit of attitude. The happy hour specials make it worth a try and the outdoor patio makes it a bit less stodgy than it's interior. If you can afford it and like boutique hotels this is likely your best option in the area. read more

We got lucky and were able to get a last minute one night Saturday stay over Memorial Day weekend. We traveled with our 2 dogs. What people have to realize (addressing the negative reviews) is that this is a Boutique Hotel. Do not expect pools, room service, etc. What you get in exchange for these pedestrian items is extremely personal service. This hotel is all about not being a big hotel. You get a heavy, old-fashioned key to your room. That should tell you something. Every communication you receive from the hotel from the welcome letter to the newspaper to the employees passing you in the hallway is personalized - yes, they know your name and you are addressed as such. There are not many rooms, so what they are catering to is individuals who seek to get away, and not be a number. To those of you who felt offended by not being permitting to enter the sacred area of the courtyard, I respond that as a paying guest, I am grateful for the discretion and minimizing the individuals who invade my privacy. There are many outdoor nooks with patios at which to relax. For us, this was ideal because it allowed us to sit outside, eat, listen to music...all with our two medium-sized (not always friendly) dogs at our sides. The employees were more than accommodating in bringing our food up to the patio, rather than requiring us to pick it up from the bar. The nightly music was...amazing. It was so relaxing to sit on the 2nd floor patio, overlooking the guitar player and his female accompaniment playing and singing classic and contemporary songs. We would move downstairs to the patio area (again, dogs in tow), to sit by the enormous wood burning fireplace where we were still within ear's reach of the music. An attentive employee made sure the fire continued to burn strong, and offered blankets and s'mores. He paid no mind to one of our dogs who had decided that the ground was too cold and had made himself comfortable in a chair. it doesn't get any better than this, ladies and gentlemen. Again, I am thankful the large number of people who congregated in the patio with the musicians, but behind the sacred gates, were not permitted to lounge with us. As for the room, the bed was tremendously comfortable. Excellent, soft, high thread count sheets, and down pillows with the proper amount of loft and suppleness. Lying in bed, you get lost staring into the fireplace as you drift off to sleep. When you awaken, a coffee pot with freshly ground coffee awaits you, deliciously full bodied and provided along with cream and sugar. I agree with a previous writer that the shower is huge, and I do wish that there were two shower heads which is a very romantic addition to a couples' getaway. But, alas, at least it is large, and the bathroom itself well appointed and with excellent amenities. For the first time in eons I chose to use the hotel's shampoo and conditioner after reading that the products are from England (sold in only two extremely high end stores there), and only available in the US at...Hotel Cheval. Yes, it could be the power of suggestion, but this is the first time my hair turned out fine, not frizzy and dried out from the hotel provisions. Each and every hotel employee went out of his/her way to make us, and our dogs, very comfortable and accommodated our every request. The only request we were quite regrettably denied was that we be able to stay an extra night, but, as it turns out, those who have been there before are well aware of the value in staying here and there were not rooms available for us. Thank you, Hotel Cheval. We will be back. Marejka Sacks read more

This was the first stop on our 2 week get-a-way to wine country. It was sort of last minute, as we decided we did not want to make the 8 hr drive from Laguna to Napa in one day. So..went online, found this Hotel and booked it for a night. Very glad we did. As previous yelpers noted, very romantic, high end rooms, all in all a great little place. Couple of points that moved this from a 4 to a 5 star... Service, walking us to the room, ensuring all was well upon check in was nicer than the experience one might receive at a larger establishment. Loved the fact that it was small (16 rooms, 13 in use the night we checked in) cosy, nice areas to get away to for privacy even when not in our room. Final point, I asked the front desk, re restaurant suggestions, reservations vs walk in etc. We aggreed on a place and before I could even ask, she was on the phone making us a reservation. I noted we wanted a quiet table as was Anniversary dinner, and upon our return to the room later that evening, a complimentarty bottle of champagne was awaiting us. Very nice! We will be back and will stay longer next time. read more

First of all, this hotel is beautiful. Its definitely a boutique hotel with lots of charm and ambiance. The location is perfect in town where you can walk to the best places to eat in Paso. The staff is really nice at check in and they were very helpful with helping us park. I also had a dog with me that I left in the room for just a little while so my boyfriend and I could go out down the street for a bit. I got a call from the hotel that she was barking and had to rush back. That was it. No chastising, no punishment, just asked me what he should do and even offered to watch her if we wanted to go back out. What hotel does that? The only reason they are not getting 4 or 5 stars is due to the following. The cleaning staff needs to be managed a bit better. Early in the morning on a Sunday, when you hope to sleep in, one of the housekeepers was rolling the cart across the patio outside at 6:00am. It was very loud and woke us up. They could easily put rubber wheels on the cart to make it quiet or not roll the cart until a reasonable time. During the breakfast time around 7:30ish, the cleaning staff shut down the bathrooms for cleaning just off the Pony Club where everyone eats so if you wanted to go wash your hands, you have to go back up to your room. In my opinion, that should have been done before they opened up for breakfast. A little better management of timing and courtesy for the cleaning staff would go a long way. Last, for $450 a night I expected to at least have a bottle of wine in the room. The only additional "treat" were 2 cookies sitting on a napkin on a table that who knows how long they were sitting there. All in all, I will stay there again. read more

This is a luxury hotel, but not sure the price warrants the experience. We did enjoy our stay, but for $500 a night I'm expecting something over-the-top great. Not sure that we'd do this hotel again based on the price/value relationship. The positives: -Limited number of rooms so it doesn't get incredibly loud -2 outdoor fireplaces in a courtyard area, with areas to sit for groups (also offers blankets & s'mores until 10pm!) -Luxury room includes fireplace -Breakfast included - weekend was awesome, included quiche, empanadas, fruit, pastries but the weekday is continental only -House cleaning comes 2x/day -Location - right on the square so many restaurants & bars are within walking distance -Pet friendly - you can bring your dog with you here! The negatives: -No restaurant -No tub -No safe -We waited over 20 minutes to check out because the receptionist & customer before us where "chatting" (it was absolutely annoying because we were in a hurry!) -Limited on-site parking, but the hotel did provide us a sticker to park on the street House cleaning was not great, particularly in the evenings - we had the same cookies sitting there for days which we didn't eat because one was burnt -We originally told them we were bringing a dog, but called to cancel the dog's reservation a week in advance. When we arrived, they had all the amenities for the dog in our room which made me think we got "the dog room" instead of the luxury room we were paying for. read more

Went to Paso Robles for the first time on a mini-vacation after the holidays. The owner of the Pretty-Smith winery recommended the hotel. We drove down from Marin in the pouring rain. It was great to arrive at a warm and cozy hotel. We stayed on the second floor with the rooms with the fire place. We had a couples message in the room which was dandy. And then went 2.5 blocks for a great dinner at Il Cortile. In the morning I went to the gym using a complimentary pass and my bride went shopping. We went wine tasting all afternoon and finished up by walking 1.5 blocks to Laurent Bistro. My bride had the "in room" breakfast delivered at 7:30 with the paper. I walked half a block to Chico's Cafe for a full breakfast before going to the gym. A good mini-vacation with the center being the Hotel Cheval. read more

I can't say enough about this wonderful place. Outdoor fire pits. In-room fire places. Pet friendly. The perfect blend of opulence and coziness. But what really makes it all come together is the staff. Rob, Katrine, and the rest made sure the many details of my Landmark Birthday (as I call it) getaway was perfect. Even better: they genuinely, care. Their enthusiasm to make sure your stay exceeds your expectations cannot be faked. They had terrific recommendations: from where to eat, activities, sightseeing, arranging a winery tour (Alex of Lush Limo had great suggestions and gave us the perfect experience), and other ways to enhance your stay (plus they effortlessly handle every detail of the planning). Not one single ball was dropped. I hated to leave; not just because i was spoiled rotten for three days, but because everyone was just so lovely. Thank you, Hotel Cheval. read more

The Hotel Cheval had been highly rated and suggested time and again by friends as the perfect place to stay in Paso. Centrally located less than a block away from the large square park in the center of downtown, City Park, and walking distance to restaurants, bars, candy stores, shopping, a movie theater, cookie shop, wine bars...Hotel Cheval is a quaint romantic hotel that boasts more amenities than most. Hotel Cheval patio seatingAfter checking in at the beautifully furnished lobby and checking out their signature jewelry and warm cookies we were handed a real door key. In our "Classic Room" we found thirsty robes, an electric fireplace, a private patio with a fountain, bottled water for the coffee maker and nightly turn-down service. Outside in the courtyard there were numerous comfy corners to read/drink/chat by a couple of outdoor fireplaces. In the morning the complimentary breakfast in the adjoining Pony club had so many choices - bagels, deli meats, cheeses, cereals, breads, muffins, fresh fruit salad, juice, coffee, etc. - there was no need to go out for breakfast. We also enjoyed checking out the library, spa, and...solicitous bartender Bradford Thompson-Young in the Pony Club. The hotel is dog friendly, as is the Pony Club bar, but check the rules first. Happy hour in the bar goes from 5 until 7 p.m. with all wines by the glass for $7 - no matter if it's the most expensive wine by the glass on the list (yes, I ordered it). We met some fun people in the bar and enjoyed more people-watching on the patio on Pine. All in all I thought the hotel a great option for romantic couples, and for those that really don't want to drive after dining. We enjoyed our stroll to and from our hotel so much that we did it multiple times. read more

Lots of Character and Charm! A good place for couples, but I would not recommend it for children or even travelling with friends -- it's a bit romantic. The staff seemed friendly, even before I arrived they recommended a couple restaurants (Villa Creek and Artisan). The check-in was quick and delightful. The beds are comfortable and the showers are clean. The Pony Bar is a nice feature. At around 5pm on a Saturday, they provided a complimentary charcuterie plate with a couple of drinks. I stayed one night in a deluxe room on the first floor and really enjoyed it. The second night was in an upstairs room (luxury?), which is a bit larger and a larger shower. However, I'm not so sure it's worth the extra money . At dusk, they have a couple outdoor wood-burning fireplaces. Plenty of seats and sofas to lounge around and enjoy the heat at night. Weekdays is a delivered continental breakfast which was fruit and a couple pastries (crossiant, strawberry flakey pastry). Fresh coffee is in each room. On Weekends, they have a warm breakfast buffet which included quiche (ham and egg/ vegetarian), fresh OJ, yogurt, fresh fruit, some mini muffins, and coffee. I was luck to get the last room at the last minute on a Saturday, so I was able to negotiate a deal on the rate. My rate for thursday was reasonable at 195 plus taxes, but it could be seasonal and the fact that it was a weekday. A little steeper for Saturday, but it was also a bigger room. Parking is limited on premises, but plenty of street parking is available. Walking distance to restaurants and movie theaters. One warning is that it can get noisy on Saturday nights with a nightclub across the street. read more
