We had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Cheval this week for three days and we absolutely loved it. Let's start with the location in the heart of downtown. It was so great just to walk to dinner and shopping. Downtown Paso is very small, but very cute. Moving on to the hotel...the service was fantastic, yet not over the top. They would basically do anything for you. We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard each night prior to going to dinner. It's a delightful space with chairs, tables and fireplaces. A nice gathering spot. We stopped there after dinner also to socialize with some guests too. The rooms are a touch smaller than we prefer, but it was ok since the hotel was so nice and there was the courtyard to enjoy. And, the room had a cute patio with a fountain. The bathroom was a decent size and the shower was wonderful...the water actually came out at a decent pace instead of the usual drip you get at hotels. The beds were very comfy too. As one would expect, there was the usual coffee, water and high end products in the room which I love. It's the little things that sometimes make a big impression. I can't say enough good things about this place. We are really looking forward to a repeat visit! read more

The best service that I can ever remember at any place that I've ever stayed. They simply give you any service that you need. Top notch!!!!! read more

This hotel got good reviews on other websites and was mentioned in quite a few articles about Paso Robles, so my expectations were high and Hotel Cheval hit the mark. They matched and even exceeded my expectations as to what a nice hotel could and should be. It was tough to check out and leave. Everything about this hotel, location, service, amenities, extras, etc..., is top notch. An added bonus is that on Friday and Saturday nights you can take Chester, their Belgian draft horse and a carriage to dinner. We got a ride from him to Artisan. From the time we arrived to the time we lingered after checking out it was friendly, relaxing, and cleansing. If you are going to stay in Paso Robles overnight you simply have to consider Hotel Cheval. read more

This was the perfect hotel for our post-wedding mini-moon. We stayed in the Watchtower (hightower?) room, which was comfortably luxurious with 20' ceilings over the bedroom. The staff were gracious and personable and gave us the impression that they really cared whether we enjoyed our stay. A chilled bottle of champagne awaited our arrival along with a welcoming note. Although we didn't partake in the fireside lounges, they were quite inviting. The seating nooks on the upper level of the hotel felt like home -- it couldn't have been better for the 80+ degree weather. The breakfast buffet was european without being sparse, and The Pony Club eating area was a great way to start the day. We've already recommended that family members come back and stay! Thank you! read more

On our recent visit to Paso Robles we had a nice glass of wine at the Pony Bar. Sat outside by the fire and enjoyed great songs by Dawn. Beautiful setting and will check out the Hotel Cheval for our next trip. read more

I found this great little hotel when searching through blogs about the wine country in Paso Robles. They were offering a deal for their fourth anniversary, so I called and took advantage of the offer. Both my boyfriend and I were so glad I did because it was a great find! We arrived to a warm welcome with people extremely eager to help, but not at all overbearing. We were walked to our room that boasted a large balcony and fireplace, big fluffy bed and two homemade cookies. We wished we had booked two nights because the room was so nice it would have been perfect to get takeout, turn on the fire and enjoy some food and wine in. For being smaller, this place had absolutely everything we could have needed-a great fireplace and sitting area outside of the rooms in an inclosed courtyard, a fireplace inside the room that we undoubtedly used, wine and cocktail glasses ready to go, inside the room for a drink next to said fireplace, a perfectly cozy and rich looking bar just steps from all the rooms (Pony Club), and all the necessary features for a perfectly relaxing and luxurious weekend in Paso. We were bummed to leave, and we'll definitely be staying here again! read more

This has got to be one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. The service was amazing and it was so quiet. Even though our room was on the ground floor right next to the communal fireplace, we heard absolutely nothing for the 4 days we were there. I also appreciated the complimentary breakfast so that I wouldn't have to walk around Paso in hundred degree weather looking to quell my hangovers. The food was decent and the coffee was strong and it was all self serve except if you wanted an omelet or pancakes on the weekend which they make to order. Our room was clean every day and they provided us with a bottle of wine when we arrived that we liked so much that we bought a few bottles to take home with us. Lastly, they have a s'mores cart and will make you as many as you can ingest. I can't say enough great things about this hotel and might go back to Paso just to stay at this hotel. I highly recommend it. read more

What a great hotel! I stayed in the room called Feathers. It has a nice fireplace and a window seat. I always love a hotel that comes with a robe and slippers. The hotel is dog friendly and they provide bowls, a bed and a dog blanket for your pup. The courtyard is charming and you can sit and chat by one of the outdoor fireplaces and roast marshmallows. Sadly there were a lot of very loud people taking up the fire places while we were there, so we never had the chance to enjoy that aspect; however, I have heard that this kind of thing is not the norm. The staff are amazing, friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was very good and included dishes like quiche, lox and cake! Pasó Robles is a sweet town with good restaurants and some cute shops. The hotel is very conveniently located with the town park a half a block away. Will definitely be back! read more

A good value if you value spending some relaxing hours in the room between ventures. Highs.. Equine village courtyard theme, tall bed and long down pillows, fireplace with timer, ample desk and shower, wonderful french doors to the well ventilated bath, the robes Mids.. Rooms and their open air ventilation vary greatly, courtyard views only, included breakfast, French theme but no bidet? Lows.. Parking, conventional door keys, small refrigerator or ice only upon request, neolithic TV quality Booked the one room left , a luxury level nearly two months ahead - a large Porsche enthusiast group had booked ahead as well, coincidentally some guys with two degrees of separation. Arriving just after some serious rain, we were shown the room. It wasn't our room. Thanks for the tease, thanks for love at first sight, the tub, the court view. On to the High Tower room we were actually booked in. I'm not quite certain if the horse names for the rooms were created for the theme or have authenticity. There is no room named Mr. Ed, nor Trigger, nor Silver, such is my equine knowledge. But indeed, that high tower you see at the Cheval's front is the more-than-double height ceiling above the bed. Ours, as many, had one window that opened onto the walking corridor, so ventilation wise the only other opened onto the bar patio below. The Pony Club closes 9-ish, the noise levels can vary. The High Tower is well separated from neighboring rooms, though I'd suggest the Cheval invest in a damper for the lobby door. The lobby door is directly below the bedroom, and at times the constant banging can be distracting. Banging from the lobby door. TV quality is horrific though the screen is well placed, and I had to look up the channel guide on their well connected net, along with the coffeemaker instructions - which had a nice selection of single serves. The wifeness loved the free passes to the gym a short drive away. I did bring my own odds and ends: extra hangers, an extension cord to charge devices, and that extra roll of toilet paper. All in all, within 2 days of being back home, I wished I was back at Hotel Cheval. read more

Can I live here? Incredibly relaxing, beautifully and comfortably designed hotel with a very accommodating staff. The evening homemade s'mores by the fireside were definitely a highlight. Giant bed, great quality sheets, and you cannot beat the location. Breakfast was included (and delicious). I wish we had stayed longer! read more

My husband and I stayed here on New Years. On top of New Years Eve being a great night to get away- it is also our anniversary. I have to admit, staying at a hotel 10 miles from our house seems pretty silly-but it was last minute! Okay, on to the hotel.... When I called to make the reservation the guy on the phone was super helpful. We only wanted Friday night, and he said he would wave the 2 night minimum for us. We were able to reserve a luxury room (best of their rooms) only a week in advance. The courtyard was beautiful; even though it was freezing out we found ourselves sitting by the outdoor fireplace and relaxing. They still had beautiful Christmas decorations out and the twinkle of the lights made it even better. Our room was nice. High-end fixtures, wonderfully soft linens, and a nice fireplace. I have to say though- you can get a room just as nice at The Carlton in Atascadero for a third of what we paid for this room. The bathroom was indeed nice; but for $500 a night (after taxes) I would have liked a tub. We travel quite a bit and have paid much less for the same quality hotel. Would I stay there again? Yes; but I wouldn't waste my money on upgrading to the luxury suite. read more

We had a lovely stay here. The room and staff were very nice. We even got late night smores around the fireplace. Overall a very pleasant stay, and I would return. The Pony Club had a great patio, and it was better than expected for breakfast and drinks. Small improvements that could be made based on the price - cookies in the room were stale, sleeping a little difficult due to noise the a/c unit made when turning on and off, turn-down service was just literally turning down the bed and not a full service. Normally I wouldn't say anything on these details, but they have 5 star prices and should have the same 5 star amenities. read more

Hotel Cheval would have received 5 stars regardless but they upgraded our room upon checkin with a bottle of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. They also brought us a dog bed a treats for our babies which is highly appreciated!! The checkin was extremely pleasant, the room is absolutely beautiful! Had a wonderful two night stay at Hotel Cheval. Came with my family and stayed in two separate rooms right next to each other, which was really nice. The cutest, coziest boutique hotel ever! The rooms were clean, nicely sized, and welcoming with super comfortable beds. We brought our dog and they had a nice clean dog bed, food and water bowls, and a blanket ready and waiting for him when we checked in. We were also celebrating my sister's birthday and they also had a complimentary bottle of champagne on ice waiting as well! Every single staff member we met was super accommodating and extremely nice. I wish I just hung out at the hotel all day, from the nice complimentary breakfast in the morning, to afternoon treats and tea in the lobby (and home made biscuits for your pup!), to fireside gourmet s'mores made for you by super friendly staff at nightfall. Such a great experience and would want to visit again just for the hotel!! read more

I recently stayed at this hotel as part of a wedding party. I was so impressed! It's a cute boutique hotel with great character and a nice courtyard. The rooms are spacious and have ample seating, with fireplaces. The room was big enough for 6 bridesmaids and a bride to get ready in and have hair and makeup artists. They are also pet friendly! The courtyard offers several seating/lounge areas with fire pits... A great place to grab a drink and hang out. They also have a decent breakfast included in the room rate. Overall, I was surprised to find this gem of a hotel in Paso. It's located in the downtown area and is walking distance to shops/restaurants. I definitely recommend it if you need a place to stay in the area! read more

Can I please just live here forever? This was a hit with my husband and my sister and her husband. At first I was reluctant to spend so much but it is worth the money. The breakfast alone is top notch. Omelets cooked to order and included in the rate. Complimentary S'mores at night with Nam who is an amazing young entrepreneur in his own right. Rob and Melissa at the front desk were so wonderful. I loved the fireplaces and the friendly atmosphere. It is cozy and charming. Like staying at an estate of a friend. Towels and linens all high end. Room was huge and luxurious. I can't wait to return. You can walk to scores of fantastic restaurants. I loved it! read more

The only place to stay in Paso Robles honestly! Barbara, Roberto and staff will go out of their way to make your already perfect stay more perfect. Rooms are clean, warm, spacious and cozy. Nightly s'mores by the fire-delicious! Barbara went out of her way to find us a very last minute dinner res for New Years and of course her connections came up strong. I can't say enough about this boutique hotel which we will be back again and again. read more

Very nice hotel overall. Romantic feel, large rooms, super comfy beds, awesome staff, and walking distance to anywhere you want to be in downtown Paso Robles. Morning breakfast offers the right amount of food, with fresh omelets on weekends. Cute courtyard has a couple fireplaces going at night to relax with some wine and your favorite company. The staff is very accommodating and they went out of their way to ensure our stay was pleasant. We didn't have the same complaints as some of the other Yelpers. We had a downstairs room and never even heard our neighbors at all. You could hear some music from the Pony Club, but it was always done by 9:00p. Cookies in our room were fresh, too... The only dings we that the shower was HUGE, but only had one shower head. I'd rather have it set up with multiple heads or give up some of that large space for a tub (tho I think some of their rooms may have tubs). Not a fan of the swinging double doors to the bathroom either; even when shut it's not all that private. A safe and a mini fridge in the room would be welcome additions, especially given the price range for staying there. However, these are pretty minor items in the overall scheme of things. I'll stay there again next time I'm in Central Coast and recommend it to anyone heading there... read more

Our second visit to this gem of a hotel and WOW! They did it again! The accommodations are top notch! The staff is wonderful and ready to please...from the fireside s'more service of the "marshmallow master" to Kyle and Jennifer, all were a delight. A true getaway property, one you find yourself not wanting to leave, but rather sink deeper into the luxurious beddings and spa like surroundings! From the personal welcome-back-greetings to genuine farewells, this hotel delivers Cheval style! See ya back soon! :) read more

Absolute Perfection! We stayed at the Hotel Cheval for our "Wedding Weekend". It is a beautiful hotel, located within walking distance to everything in downtown Paso Robles. The property is absolutely gorgeous with charming outdoor lounge areas and a fabulous wine bar. The hotel surpassed all of our expectations, the hotel staff was warm and welcoming from the time we checked in until the time we checked out. They were very accommodating which helped us manage all the "moving pieces" of our wedding day. The "icing on the cake" was that the hotel is pet friendly, so I was able to travel with my dogs which made me weekend all the more special. read more

We saw this hotel on TV and thought we'd check it out. We have stayed there 1/2 dozen times, and we just keep going back. The rooms are very nice, great patios, love the outdoor fire places and the s'mores (Nam who serves them is great!), walkable to great dining and central Paso Robles, etc. Only thing I wouldn't recommend is the spa appointments, we tried that once and were disappointed. Everything else is top notch! read more

Worst experience of my life. Came to celebrate my 40th birthday, got back to the hotel at 9:40 to have s'mores and was rudely told that the server had gone home for the night. Hotel brochure says s'mores until 10pm. Paid over $400 per night to celebrate this special day. Highly disappointing and will never stay again!!! read more

This hotel amazes me, 7 years later and it looks new still. They greet you by name, include a lovely bottle of wine, treats for the pet include a dish and pet comforter, complimentary distilled water, homemade cookies... Rooms are well appointed, comfortable, spacious, and quiet. The patio, library, and Pony Bar are just as charming. Romantic and relaxing, wishing they had other properties! read more

Not a good experience on patio on a Friday night......burger was good....empenada was not good...one has mostly onion...no meat...too many dogs...one right up at the table....really? Waiter was robotic....wrong order brought...correction never brought......more bread ordered....never brought....overheard waiter blaming kitchen for problems....rush in kitchen....total confusion...very disappointing...so many other excellent places in town...also, bathroom lock confusion...even for my husband...not pleasant to get hit in the head when using...told by others that it is a problem...fix it!!! read more

A few other Yelpers here have shared similar experiences to mine, but thought I'd throw in my two cents as well. THE GOOD * Great location to many other bars/restaurants/tasting rooms. * Nice beds and spacious rooms/bathrooms. * Rooms and parking are close together so carrying bags is easy. * Happy hour on the patio with live music. THE NOT SO GOOD * Our room was right above the library and we were awaken by blaring music at 7:00 am, which was playing on the ceiling speakers. It took me a while to figure out where the music was coming from, but had to walk downstairs in my robe to track the source down and turn it down. * No fridges in the rooms and for ice, I had to go ask the front desk clerk who took me into the bar to get it. * For a hotel with so many great wineries in the area, we didn't think the wine list at the Pony Club on site was that good. Over the course of a two night stay, we sampled several wines and none were that good. * A guest broke a wine glass near one of the fireplaces and the next morning around our 11:00 check out, the shattered glass was still sitting there. * 11:00 check out time. Luckily, we were able to get this extended to 12:00, but that's a standard check out time and most hotels. There seems to be some additional higher end accommodations popping up around Paso so that's good. Can't beat the location of Hotel Cheval, however, and it's worth a splurge to stay there now and then. read more

I'll agree that the place looks charming but the staff was terrible... especially bad since this hotel is very expensive. From the distant front desk staff to the rude people in the Pony Bar, service was consistently under par. They also could care less that the parking was weird and inconvenient. It was our only experience with bad clientele in central California. read more

Love this hotel! Charming, beautiful, quiet place to stay in Paso Robles. It was our first time in Paso Robles, and... with a dog too. The hotel is dog friendly and we were thrilled to bring our new dog with us. The hotel is beautiful and stylishly decorated with an equestrian theme. It is conveniently located right across from the town square. We had a room in the back with a patio, which was perfect for us and our dog. The staff was welcoming, helpful and very friendly-- with our dog too! HIghly recommend this place. We have already planned our trip back. read more

Love this hotel! Great location, great staff...very accommodating and helpful. The s'mores at the end of the night are truly a treat! My only gripe would be that they need to update some of the rooms and invest in more quality beds. The first time we stayed there, the room did not match the price of what it costs to stay there. The most recent stay, just last week, we had a much better room but the bed was really soft causing us to not sleep well. Updating the rooms and definitely the mattresses would make me up my score to a perfect 5 star rating! read more

Had food and wine at the Pony Club in the Hotel Cheval. Excellent service, great wines, and a beautiful setting. Wonderful.

Adorable hotel in Paso Robles. If you want a luxurious boutique hotel in this area, this is the place. Very high end fixtures, they did not compromise on quality here. Amazing showers, great bathrooms. Comfy bed. We had a beautiful outdoor terrace on first floor. Really cute courtyard with outdoor fireplaces, very nice atmosphere, highly recommend. We got a very good price on the room mid week special. read more

We loved everything about this boutique hotel. The rooms are large and decorated beautifully. Complimentary snacks, tea, coffee, and candy in the lobby are a nice touch. At night, there is someone making homemade gourmet s'mores in front of the wood burning fireplace outside! The location was perfect for walking to dinner each night. We can't wait to return. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here. Best bed I have ever slept on (including Four Seasons). Rooms are comfortable and private. Great central courtyard area with small fireplace sitting areas to enjoy your evening. Friendly staff, and central location. Never turned on the TV so I can't comment on that. read more

Great staff, really enjoyed the fireside s'mores. With only 16 rooms, has a very cozy ambiance. But....for this price point the hotel amenities are lacking such as pool, gym, etc. Doesn't make sense to pay the premium only to go off property most of visit to enjoy the surroundings. They have a bug problem-- we had flies, fruit flys and mosquitos in our room--spent too much time trying to eliminate--plus the air conditioner would not stay in "fan only" mode, kicking on and off all night keeping us awake. But overall--we really appreciated our visit and would recommend if you're looking for luxury.... read more
