This is a cafeteria style dining experience with fried items made to order. Staff is friendly and welcoming. The cooks were working hard. Everything we tried was excellent! Meatloaf was covered with a yummy gravy. The mashed sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes with chicken gravy were whipped smooth and had great flavor. The collard greens had bits of meat and were tender. The smoked wings with white sauce were smoky and had a nice pepper seasoning. I moved to New Orleans in August for law school and hot stuff instantly became my favorite casual restaurant. I probably go too often and spend too much money, but wouldn't change it for a thing. The staff are incredibly friendly, the food is delicious & fresh, the portions are perfect, and the price is completely reasonable. Posting various photos I have but the white bbq wing sauce may be my favorite wing sauce I've ever had. This is the only restaurant I willingly order meatloaf at and walk out not regretting my choice (but am very pleased with it). Couldn't say enough great things 10/10. read more

Stopped by for the first time to try the fried chicken everyone raves about and it did not disappoint! I was so hungry that I failed to take a photo of any food, only a picture of the vintage poster inside. For sides I had the mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. Everything was so tasty. Service was friendly and they have a rewards program too! It's not cheap but fairly priced and the portions are good. And they have hand sanitizer by the condiments, which I really appreciate. I'm here weekly. Can't tell you what to get because it's all good. Probably have the fried chicken as my last meal. The biscuits- oh the biscuits. Collard Greens are a can't miss and I always gotta have the black eyed peas. My boys will ride bikes to get the banana pudding -Don't sleep on it! Breakfast here...slaps a hangover in the face. Good ole southern style food!! Reminded me of going to dinner at church on Wednesday nights with grandmother. Menu changes daily which I like - all the food tasted REALLY good. Green beans just how I like em, and the cheese grits got a little kick to em just like they should. I would imagine if I went earlier than later some of the food would be more fresh (it is kept warm until it runs out). I'm not a fan of waiting in a line outside so we made sure to get there when they opened since it was a Saturday. No line and we were greeted when we walked in. I was bummed that they did have fried chicken or wings but perked up when I saw stewed chicken. It was just being pulled off the stove. I ordered the stewed chicken with rice, collard greens, white beans and hush puppies instead of the roll. OMG the flavor!! The stewed chicken was delicious and the meat was soooo tender it fell apart when barely touched. The collard greens, white beans, and hush puppies were super flavorful and tasty. The decor of the restaurant was fun and funky like Turkey and the Wolf and Molly's Rise and Shine. The service was great and they came to bus our table when we were getting up to leave. This place is so good I came back two weeks in a row. The building itself is smallish looks like it used to be a neighborhood convenient store or something. Staff is very nice and helpful letting you know how everything works and makes good recommendations. First time went with hamburger steak gravy and potatoes, green beans, and Mac and cheese. The burger was juicy, the gravy super flavorful, and the mash pillowy. Mac and cheese was super cheesy and creamy. You pretty much can't go wrong. Today I went with fried catfish, cheese grits, hearts of palm salad. The catfish was super crispy, but still soft inside. Cheese grits were great. Salad was very refreshing. I'm a big fan of this style of eatery. It's nice to have another lunch counter in the city. The selection here is good, the service is really great. Quick friendly greetings and well displayed options to fill your plate. I chose fried chicken with greens and white beans. Unfortunately, it wasn't great, I'm not a fan of greens with sugar so that was a little disappointing. The white beans were okay but lacked flavor and were a bit mushy. I think they use a hot sauce batter and cornmeal for the chicken, so it has a vinegar flavor and the grit from the corn. Love the idea and would try something else. Totally obsessed. When I eat the home-style food from Hot Stuff, I feel LOVED... seriously, like when my grandmother and mother cooked for days to make a big family meal when I was a child. This is truly food for the soul. My husband and I've eaten from Hot Stuff at least 3x a week since I first heard of it. Chicken stew, black eyed peas, mashed potatoes, and cabbage are my absolute favorites. Also they have such delicious bread! The meatloaf and fried chicken are excellent. My own 75 year old mother had their food for 1st time last week. I got her a to-go plate. She called me and asked me all about where I got the delicious home cooked food. This is a cafeteria, a la carte style restaurant. We were very unfortunately there on "Italian" day, which means they were not serving the usual meat plus three sides - which was a huge disappointment. The food lacked flavor and was expensive for what you got. Keep in mind that they charge all orders a 15% service charge and will also ask for additional tip at checkout. There is no service that you're tipping for - you pick up your own food at the counter, get your own drinks, and bus your own table. I found the restaurant by doing a yelp search for banana pudding. The banana pudding they served was a "bananas foster" version and was overly sweet and nothing like traditional banana pudding. The decor is cute but the restaurant is extremely loud and you will have a hard time carrying on a conversation. We won't be back. read more

This place is, and I cannot stress it enough, amazing. The staff was friendly (and had a good sense of humor!). I tried the fried chicken (great texture and juicy), mac and cheese, stewed tomatoes and okra (my favorite of the sides), and pickle cheese (a dip served with saltines). This is kind of like a Piccadilly Cafeteria on crack. And I mean that in the best way because I love Piccadilly! If you've never eaten cafeteria style before, when you get there you grab a tray and silverware and go down the line and order your main dish first. I got there a little late in the day, around 2:30, and the only entrees that were left were meatloaf, fried chicken, and smoked wings. I chose the meatloaf. From there you choose your sides of which there are many. I chose the mashed potatoes. Black eyed peas, and macaroni and cheese. Your meal also comes with a roll. You could easily tell that everything was homemade (unlike Piccadilly) and delicious! Highly recommended if you like down home southern cooking! My only concerns were that it was pretty pricey. The meal was $28 including iced tea, tip, and tax. I get that inflation has everyone on the ropes but unfortunately at this price the restaurant is much more of a treat than a regular go-to for lunch. It was also very hot inside. I looked at the thermostat and it read 84 degrees. Not very pleasant in the middle of a brutal New Orleans summer. All that having been said, I look forward to trying more of their food, I just unfortunately can't go as often as I'd like. read more

Sure to tickle your nostalgia bone for meals you grew up eating or home style diners that gramps and grams used to take you to on Sundays. 10/10 for friendly service, fun decor (I am overjoyed by all the Spuds MacKenzie ephemera), and the fooooooood.
