I admit I've only been here once but I will make the hour drive to come back soon. I was visiting the city for the first time for my birthday. My boyfriend and I had never been and we parked downtown and walked around. We were hungry and Horseshoe had a good menu. We were seated right away but the place filled up fast. We both got the chicken fried chicken and I think about it often. It was everything I wanted and more. Perfect and large fried chicken, gravy, eggs, hashbrowns and toast. We both loved our food, even my boyfriend who eats like a 7 year old and doesn't like trying new places loved it. Nice place in downtown Bellingham. First of all, the good: menu was big but not too big. Good amount of interesting stuff on the menu. Almost got the carnivore omelette but went for chicken and waffles instead. But there is loads of stuff. Waitress was nice and food was reasonably quick. The not so good: I ordered chicken and waffles, which is supposedly like $11.50. Somehow it ended up being like $15 without tip. I'm no mathematician, but I have no idea how that happened. We weren't in a big group and I didn't have anything else. It wasn't a big enough deal to ask about, but unfortunately I'm going to remember that for a while. Finally, the pet peeve. I ordered chicken and waffles. Plural. I got one waffle. If it's one waffle, call it chicken and WAFFLE. Not waffles. Plural means more than one. Plus, a waffle costs like 25 cents to make. I ordered online which may have been part of the problem. I spent an extra $3 for an additional side of gravy and i didn't receive extra. I also selected no lettuce on my burger and still received it. The crispy onions that were supposed to be on said burger were also slimy and had a strange flavor. The more concerning part of my order was the "Chicken n biscuit" the biscuits were actually just bread, and the chicken was tiny. The texture of the chicken was awful, even worse than the strange bacon that came on my burger. The sausage gravy wasnt bad, but it definitely didn't taste like gravy. Went there New Year's Day 2023, with classic rock music in the air, the place was beginning to fill up when we arrived, but it was manageable. We had a sweet and smiling waitress who attended to our needs. Coffee adult beverages order placed Food: Chicken n waffles - sweet - 100% eaten Chicken n waffles - savory - 75% eaten Chicken fried chicken - 100% eaten Issues: 1 - my companions were able to enjoy two beverages before our food arrived. While our sweet waitress repeatedly apologized and promised our food would be out soon, it took about 45 minutes before two plates arrived we then waited about five more minutes before the third plate arrived. 2 - my maple syrup was half water. Apparently they put the syrup in a warm water bath to keep it flowing, however, mine had apparently tipped and allowed water in. Pretty gross. PLUS: food and price were decent (not delicious or a bargain), waitress was sweet. MINUS: Smell of cigarette smoke was wafting into the restaurant and the cooking crew was not prepared to keep up with the flow of customers. read more

This is the best Bellingham diner. I have been going to Horseshoe over the past ten years, (including when they changed owners) and they always have great coffee and lots of options. I give them 5 stars because in the early 2010's there were some issues with quality of food and cleanliness, but they have vastly improved. The price is right-they have some of the best cheap eats in Bellingham. They also have lots of pies to try. I have not been here for late night. This is a great breakfast and lunch spot. So, I've been here twice since they have been under new management. Bad news: no longer 24 hour cafe. Now just "AFE" as the sign suggests. Both times I've been here I've gotten the tots, and they're great. Fried to perfection. And this second time I got them I found out that the house BBQ is Sweet Baby Rays -nice choice-. Anyways, my friend doesn't have a yelp account and he keeps raving about how much he loves it so it so I wanted to leave a positive review. His BLT has "thick-cut dank bacon" and the fries are "crunchy and well seasoned" as I'm inclined to agree with. We saw some donut holes being prepared for a stranger, and the sweet angel of a server requested "more cinnamon sugar" and that's an employee that's really looking out for their patron. There are multiple booths and tables available, and we did not have to wait when we arrived. The service was slow, as they appear to be understaffed. From when we sat down, it took 45 minutes for our food to be served. The food was high-quality, classic diner food. I ordered the bacon guacamole burger, and enjoyed it. Other members of my group ordered chicken fried chicken and omelettes, and everyone was satisfied with their meals. The Horseshoe Cafe is definitely a place I would have loved to go to when I was in college. Visiting for my first time to this famed cafe (few years later than college aged) however, it was kind of disappointing. This place has been around since 1886 - its popular with the locals and open 24 hours a day. What's not to love? For me, I found it very difficult to find a cleaner or even cleani-ish eating option on the menu. Lots of fried comfort foods - but not much in the department of clean or non-greasy / not likely to upset my stomach. I ended up ordering a cranberry turkey sandwich (which is not on their online menu.) The turkey was great (nice baked thick slices) but I ended up not eating the rest of the sandwich as it was drowned in creamcheese. I'm not kidding- there must have been at least a 1/2 cup of the stuff on the sandwich. Next time I'll know to order it with the cream cheese on the side. My husband had a chili cheeseburger which he absolutely loved - but he wasn't exactly looking for a healthier side option or concerned about grease. Positive notes: overall, the restaurant has a very welcoming and comfortable local feel to it. Full of old diner style booths and vintage lighting - you'll feel like you stepped back in time to 1960's. The staff was friendly and very attentive. We enjoyed chatting with our wait person about her family farm nearby and their plans to start growing organic garlic. This place is quite the dive, and with quite an eclectic clientele. Patrons look to mainly be interestingly dressed and tatoo'd and somewhat drunk college kids, but I must say, the food here is quite good The kids all also really mind their own business, so there's no issue at all enjoying your meal here at a table or at the bar. I think it's only one of three diners that's open 24 hours in Bellingham, and I'm told (and now believe) with the best food. It really met my late night needs, and I did enjoy the people watching here on several visits, besides the good breakfast and bar food selections. I've had their bacon mushroom cheeseburger, chili omelette, and a 14 oz steak breakfast style - with eggs and toast. All were quite satisfying. Their beer is also dirt cheap at $3.50, with good selections like Mack and Jack's african amber ale, Diamond IPA, Guinness, and Widmer Hefeweizen. This place also claims to be the oldest continuously operated restaurant west of the Mississippi, and started in 1886. It's also one of the most interesting places I've ever dined in, and I liked the uniqueness of the place. I will say and acknowledge though that it's not a place for everyone. Despite any outward appearances, folks in the Pacific NW are generally amongst the most courteous, polite, and welcoming that I've ever met anywhere, and this place might be a somewhat extreme example of that. read more

I like this place a lot. It's classic diner breakfast food and there's nothing better than that. They have these lil breakfast sandwiches that are so perfect for people struggling to have an appetite. Perfect amount of food not too greasy I love those lil sandwiches! The whole place is covered with articles and signs about how old and loved this place is. It's very homey and warm, but a little low lighting. I have only ever come here for breakfast so I cannot speak about their other food but everyone I've been here with, myself included, has loved their food. The staff is always very kind and pleasant. Not too involved but not too uninvolved either. They have found the diner balance. And I appreciate that. I definitely suggest this place for a Saturday morning when you may be craving coffee and eggs. I have never been disappointed so I hope you won't be either! read more

The biscuits themselves, however, come from elsewhere (probably frozen and then re-heated), and have that bland, unremarkable texture that machine-made biscuits so often have. The portion size is good, and at $4.49, it's CHEAP! (though adding 2 slices of bacon will set you back an additional $2.)
