We were just looking for a decent brunch passing through Bellingham to Seattle and ended up with by far the most memorable scrumptious and earnestly delicious homecooked dishes EVER! first, DO NOT MISS the biscuits and gravy here. All homemade and wickedly delicious. They have a whole section on their menu just devoted to biscuits. Get your cue! Second; YOU MUST ORDER the homemade corned beef with sunny side eggs. By golly, this dish hit a homerun. It was sooooo simply made but absolutely wonderful. Third, the staff here treat you like family, constantly hovering over you to make sure your coffee cup is always filled and you lack nothing: Do not take this forgranted. Most diners usually make you wait forever for service, here, we could not be ignored. We felt welcomed, seen, heard and cared for. Sitting on the main drag in Ferndale this little hole in the wall more than provided us with a brunch that we would return to try more of their menu. We were very warmly greeted by the staff upon entering and sat immediately. It seemed like a large percentage of the people that entered after us were regulars, with conversations flowing freely. The interior was nice and clean, the washroom the same as well. The food is well crafted, simple but tasty and also comes with good sized portions. Everyone that was in the restaurant while we were there seemed quite happy with the service and the food, what else can you ask for in a local diner. We'll be back! read more

I was so hungry and I had a full list of errands to run... I look up bfast places in ferndale and this one popped up. Al's is all at once singular and recognizable. Regular diner fare, but done really well! It's a cozy little spot on Ferndale's main road, I just lucked out on a spot in front but unless there is parking in the rear, parking may be an issue. The food was spot on, The service was amazing and the ambiance was actually really mellow ( except for the douchy Outoftowny BMW Bros giving the waitress a hard time) I ordered the light Bfast - one egg hash and bacon with english muffin. The hashbrowns were perfectly crispy and not greasy at all. my over easy egg was perfection, no runny white and the yolk bright yellow and scrumptious! I got the bacon as I am not a fan of a sausage patty, it was crisp and delicious. The muffin could have been toasted a bit more, but I ate it all up! I got a decafe coffee and it was fresh and tasty. Hit the spot perfectly. Next time I'll bring my boo and I'll remember to take pics. read more

Food was very quick, and staff was there to always fill your cup of coffee and attend to any need. Prices were reasonable and they had all the classic breakfast options available. Eggs Benny was very good. I wish I ordered a half plate, as my stomach always fools me. I was stuffed after eating only half the plate -- even though I wanted to eat more. We also tried the breakfast sandwich which was good. I liked how they had the option for sourdough bread (my favorite). Coffee was comforting as you would expect from a diner like this. Nothing fancy here, but it will definitely be a go-to place for me if I'm in the mood for a classic breakfast. read more

We stopped in today for a lunch, and was just delighted with the food, the service, and that feeling when you're sitting in a room and everybody is delighted with the meals they're having. The room was full throughout the 45 minutes or so we were there, but when we arrived at around 12.30pm a table freed up and we managed to get seated right away. Coffee was regularly topped up with a friendly smile, and specific care so the pour didn't splash on phones sitting on the table. It was a bit of a wait for food, but you know it was made with great care in the way that good home cooking is done. Our table had a bacon cheeseburger with fries, and a grilled cheese sandwich with coleslaw. We were both filled from a morning on the road, and fueled up for an afternoon drive home. The staff are terrific, so be sure to stop in because they'll look after you. The bathrooms were spotless too. read more

Amazingly great food! Small town feel. Eggs with polish sausage and a Veggie Omelette were both cooked to perfection (not greasy!). Home fries were the best I've had in a long time. Add a bit of seasoning salt or just pepper like I did and you will agree. Well worth a visit! read more

Decent little diner in downtown Ferndale. We stopped by on the way to Seattle and it's only a couple of minutes off the I-5. Frankly, I expected more given the reviews. The interior is very austere, not very welcoming although the staff were super friendly. I was excited to see Tony's coffee mugs as I've been to that coffee house in Bellingham and loved it but the coffee here wasn't very good. The menu is surprisingly brief for a place known for breakfast, I ended up with the biscuits and gravy which were quite lackluster. My wife's bacon Benny was good though. Honestly if it had just been me eating I'd probably give it 3 stars but my wife's Benny and the friendly service are bumping it up a star. I'd probably try something else next time but it's a thoroughly decent choice. read more

You can always trust a place named Al's! This small breakfast spot in Fernwood was excellent! Super simple menu and food cooked like I would do it. French toast was super thick sliced Texas toast with a super tasty batter. Coffee here is an exceptional local roaster and our cups stayed full. Best part is their corned beef hash! Not your standard canned garbage but perfectly seasoned, house made corned beef tossed together with potatoes, green peppers, and scallions! Probably the best diner corned beef hash I've ever had!! his place would be dangerous to our budget if we lived here!!! Great food! I had the chicken fried steak and home fries (yummy fried chunks of potatoes) and hubby had the eggs Benny. We ordered a "small" blueberry pancake to split, a giant which was served with real butter, huge fresh blueberries, and not made from a "just add water" mix. Delish!!!. Our coffee cups were never more than half empty! The food was excellent- the chicken fried steak was actually a 'steak', not burger- lightly battered and fried, the eggs were PERFECTLY poached. We were treated with consummate professionalism,and witnessed even a little extra care for an obviously regular elderly couple, and a group sitting under the chalkboard menu given a paper menu so they didn't have to crane their necks. Best Jalapeño burger in town. I thought that title belonged to Cedars across the street from Al's but I was wrong. The cedars burger is good......but the Al's is better. Perfectly melted pepper jack cheese, great Jalapeño ratio, and most importantly the meat was seasoned and cooked to perfeeeeection. Staff is attentive and fast. Only had to wait 10 minutes to be seated on a busy Saturday morning and they were short staffed. Good turn over of tables. The staff were attentive, friendly, and never let your coffee cup get close to empty. The food was perfect diner food and not overly greasy. Simple classic menu. I had hash browns (highly recommended, thicker shreds of potato and crispy) bacon was plentiful, and half a fresh ripe avocado. The restaurant itself is small but clean and a little modern. We stopped in just before they closed this afternoon. They never mentioned it was close to closing time and treated us like we were the first customers of the day. The food was hot, fresh, and fast. I had the crispy chicken sandwich. It comes with a healthy helping of chicken, fresh lettuce, fresh tomato, pickles, and mayo. I also had onion rings as my side. They were crispy, not greasy, and full of onion. They were the best onion rings that I have had in a long time. My wife had a BLT with cottage cheese as her side. She said that it was fresh and delicious. The young lady who waited on us, Trista, was delightful. She took great care of us and never stood still. When she wasn't taking care of us she was cleaning and straitening the place up. It is very clean and bright. The owner came out and talked with us when we had questions about the soup(s) of the day. I will make a point to be there when they have their potato bacon soup. They just opened 3 weeks ago. They are open for breakfast and lunch from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.
