Went here while in town to see family. There's a lot of seating space inside and this Friday morning, it wasn't too crowded. I was seated right away and helped almost immediately. Immediate ding for me was that they only serve soda in cans, at three bucks a can, no refills. That's a lot for 12oz of coke. I opted for coffee, with free refills and a lower price point. I went for the 2-2-2. Two pancakes, two strips of bacon, and two eggs. The eggs had an odd, milky flavor and texture. They were also very underdone... practically liquid on the inside. They really had an unpleasant mouth feel and I didn't finish them. The bacon was great...crisp and salty and not fatty at app. The pancakes were alright; big though, and I didn't finish those either. They weren't great or stood out at all, but they did the job. You can get additional toppings on them for an upcharge, although I said no but still got some strawberries and blueberries on top. The service was friendly but not super attentive. I only got a refill of coffee once before I got my food and then was never checked on again, despite empty water glass and coffee mug on the edge of the table. I ate about half and wasn't really interested in the rest. I came away somewhat disappointed. I really don't see a reason to go back, I'm afraid. read more

This is the epitome of diner food. First, the people were great, very sweet and quick to fill a coffee cup, which for us coffee cravers is perfect! Onto the food! So I had the eggs Benedict, but they kindly made the eggs over hard (don't throw things at me here, I have to have no wet yolks for health reasons, anyway I digress) so it's great they did an overhead egg. The hollandaise was yum, more sweet than tart but good, thick ham, nice English muffin bottom. And the hash browns, these were authentic which is perfect, but the tops were crispy while the inside was super soft. So much food! I should have gotten the half portion because wow! The environment was good, old school, friendly people. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was the hash browns were meh, and it was mostly just decent diner fare, but I am sure it would be brilliant for hangover mornings when you need exactly this type of food. read more

Have not been to Diamond Jim's for a while, but this restaurant has improved in every way. Many choices for breakfast. Large servings. Very friendly and efficient service. Hammerhead coffee and interesting seasonal drinks. Will be changing its name to the Grouchy Diner. Booths and tables, not too loud for conversation. read more

First time visiting at Diamond Jim's. A late morning breakfast was comfortable and delicious. The waitress's were very nice and friendly. The biscuits are extremely tasty. I tried them 2 ways, 1 with homemade mixed berry jam & the second with Homemade Gravy. Paired with eggs & potatoes with skins. We also had the 2 Blueberry Hotcakes. These were very light, fluffy & tasty. A bowl of freshly cut mixed fruit was served as a pre meal warm up. They were all sweet and fresh too. No doubt we will return. And a thank you to Scotty ??? the biscuit maker who stopped by our table to ensure that our biscuits were as we expected. read more

Why did we have to sit at the door for a seat at the bar when the entire bar was empty? They pay no attention to the list and there is no one greetings guests. Wouldn't you look down the list and those that indicated "any" or "bar" you let sit? Got a "whatever" gesture and sure go ahead and sit. Makes no sense but two other parties left. The place looked like and felt like a quintessential dinner. The food lacked enthusiasm. While well fried, the hash browns were limp. While over easy, the egg was cooked too hot slightly over cooking the whites. The bacon was bacon, so bacon. Excepting the biscuit, which was fluffy, soft, substantial, fresh and delicious. Appeared to be a laid back diner feel for a nice Sunday breakfast... 3 tables dirty and 1 group ahead of us to be seated... it took over 10 minutes for the staff to clean one table, once we were seated it took over 10 minutes to get drinks, we immediately ordered and over 30 minutes to get our order. Diamond Jims was just recently bought and now has new owner. I have always enjoyed going there, so I thought I would give it a try again. Much of the previous staff is still there. The service was, as usual, efficient and friendly. The old menu has been replaced with an entirely new, re-formatted one. Many items have also changed (some eliminated, some added). I found it a little difficult to easily and quickly understand. I realize Diamond Jims isn't intended to be a five star restaurant, but at some level, presentation makes an impact. When our orders were delivered, I was surprised by their "look". My friend ordered a hash brown scramble with eggs and veggies. When it was delivered it looked like a pile of mush. I'm not sure how else it could have been plated, but it seemed a bit "amateurish". But, it was a generous serving and my friend declared it, "Tasty" (which after all is the important trait). I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfectly, but the Hollandaise Sauce tasted "flat". It lacked the rich, robust flavor you want in the sauce. I think more butter and better seasoning (salt) would have helped. The slice of ham was getting a bit over-cooked with the edges starting to get black and the entire slice too dry. Both ham and over-toasted English Muffin were difficult to cut The hash browns were browned on the surface, but somehow the interior was very mushy. I will, for the present, just consider this an off day, but I would hesitate before I ordered this dish again. I was disappointed in todays visit, but I will give them another try someday. read more

the food was horrible but i was starved. The steak was overcooked and the toast was burnt. IDK why they'd even serve that unless i asked for it. Which, i did not. the potatoes were good and eggs perfect. For $21 this is a rip off. i asked for new i burnt toast and it took about 10 minutes to get so i just scraped off the burn to finish my meal. She discounted me for the inconvenience but then the new toast had mold on it so she took care of my bill. I still tipped her $10 but i won't be back to this place. Something is different at Diamond Jim's Grill. When I looked in the window, I noticed it looked cleaner and fresher than I remember from years ago. Walked in and was greeted with a smile and seated quickly (granted we got there just before the rush, so there probably would have been more of a wait had we been later). The table was well-ordered with condiments and silverware, and lots of interesting stuff on the menu. I got something that I think might be new (haven't been here for years, so it was new to me): Hawaiian Hash Browns. This menu item might be the best breakfast I've ever had. I added two eggs sunny side up, which I recommend as an add. Pineapple, jalapeños, onions, ham, and I added there special house-made pear habañero hot sauce which was incredible on a bed of toasted hash browns. It was the best, most satisfying breakfast I've had out in a long time, in Bellingham or anywhere else. My kids liked what they got, and all the food came out quickly and service was honestly on another level. Refilled waters and coffee with regularity and dropped off the check without me having to ask. Really kicking it up a notch, Diamond Jim! Note: as of this visit, there wasn't a kids menu, but there was a "kid's cake" (pancake) option which was nice for my youngest. read more

Stopped in with the hubby for breakfast and the food was delicious! I had the hash brows with bacon (huge portion that half ended up in a to go box) along with 2 over medium eggs, cook to perfection and a single fluffy blueberry pancake. Sadly they were out of whip cream. The husband had a huge plate of biscuits and gravy with sausage which was equally delicious. Coffee was a little weak but then I'm a grind your own coffee snob. Arrived with brothers, age 81, 79 and me 77. Got a table in 4 minutes for breakfast. Ordered breakfasts, got water, coffee, tea; after 40 minutes Asked waitress when our orders will be out, she said I'll check on them; after 10 minutes the other waitress said the order was not put into the cooks, and she asked me "how were your eggs 2B cooked?", and also said our order will be out in 5-10minutes or you can leave now! And again said we can leave; after one hour waiting, we left without breakfast, Happy New Year Diamond Jim! Others came, ate and left as we sat there. Boycott the rude waitresses there. Diamond Jim's has really gone downhill, and we are so sad & disappointed. We won't be going back, and we said goodbye to our old favorite this morning. The menu is smaller & presented on reused photocopied printer paper. 1/2 entrees are no longer on the menu nor available (we were told they no longer serve 1/2 entrees). The breakfast entrees are now served on the old 1/2-entree plate sizes, at $17+ each! (higher prices, way less quality or quantity) The Denver omelette & AFPs (American Fried Potatoes) are no longer available. The red potato option is bland & dull; the hashbrowns are no different than the frozen aisle in your coorporate grocery store. The original 2-2-2 sign and reader board signs behind the service bar are totally gone. Meat was not brought with the French toast (even though it comes with it), and 20 minutes into our meal the server (new to DJs) brought 2 shriveled up pieces of bacon "in case we wanted it & she couldn't remember what we said." We ordered a beverage, which was not brought to us nor mentioned again until when our check was brought the server said "we were out of the beverage you ordered so I took it off of your check." And, sadly, the place literally smelled like dog poop. I'm not overexaggerating... once we got into the car I said it smelled odd, like dog poop in the restaurant & my friend said she thought 'the exact same thing!' but didn't want to say anything. I don't know which is worse: lose an epic Bellingham restaurant all-together (Rocket Donuts, Pizzazza, Tony's Coffee (), original Dirty Dan's, the red Fish & Chips bus, and more)..... -or- go completely downhill into a spiral crash. ‍ read more

Sadly, I'm adding Diamond Jim's to the list of Bellingham restaurants I no longer frequent. I stopped in today for the first time since it changed owners, and was very unimpressed. The menu is substantially pared down, and 1/2 orders are no longer available. My favorite has always been the biscuits and gravy, in no small part because of the fluffy "diamond" biscuits. What I was served was round, toasted-on-the-grill biscuits with none of the deliciousness of the previous incarnation. The gravy itself also seemed less flavorful, but that could just be disappointment talking. The red potatoes were a bit dry and also mostly flavorless. The longtime server was friendly and attentive as usual, but that doesn't make up for the other, multiple disappointments. They had a good run, but it's time to find a new favorite biscuits and gravy spot. read more

On a weekend trip to Bellingham to sample a few of the craft breweries and dining establishments. Diamond Jim's Grill was recommended by Bellingham Yelpers so included it on our tour. Came by around 11 am on a Friday and great to find free parking out front and no problem securing a table. The service was quite good. Our server was pleasant, attentive and they were great on topping up the coffee. Ordered the 2-2-2 and selected pancakes, eggs (over easy) and bacon. The pancakes were massive...really large, and had I been here previously, I would have probably ordered the 2-2-1 (one pancake instead of two). No complaints about the food or coffee. With good food and great friendly service, it was a positive food experience and happy to recommend Diamond Jim's Grill. read more

I love this local diner. The staff are friendly and will work hard to please you. They are quick to seat you, take your order and refill drinks. They will make suggestions if you are on the fence about an order. Once your food arrives, they will engage in conversation to make sure your order is to your liking. They ran out of jalapenos on my most recent order, but they were happy to suggest a variety of local hot sauces from Everson or the national brand Tabasco sauces to add heat to my meal. This establishment regularly supports local non profit organiztions like the Whatcom Humane Society or local events like the Eat Local Challenge during the month of September. There are cash collection bins by the register to raise funds for community organiztions. The daily menu displays the special; and during the month of September, this special is part of the Eat Local Challenge. The food is always nicely presented and served hot and fresh. The taste and texture is spot on and consistently flavorful and filling. You can do a full or half order. The half order is a great portion size for one and the full order is great for sharing with a friend or taking home for late night leftovers. There is a small parking lot that borders the restaurant and street parking out front that fills up fast, but you can usually find a place in the neighboring streets. Regardless, parking is free. WiFi is free, but you will need to ask the wait staff for the password. The diner has sort of a soda jerk, 1950s look to it without being kitchy. I love hanging out here. read more

The food tasted like real food, not just frozen, generic stuff you find at most breakfast joints. I had the ABTJ which was terrific and the house hot sauce was amazing. Friends tried a special Benedict and a Hash - both of which were also quite good. Not only was the food quality/taste improved, but the atmosphere was better. I had the pleasure of finally finding this place in Bham. It's small looking from the outside but it's got that charming, warm feel once you get inside. They have a pretty extensive menu of breakfast choices when you really look at it in its entirety. It as busy when I got there, and with the large amount of seating, it wasn't more than a few minutes wait. I did take the time to look through it all and finally settled on D.J.'s Corned Beef Hash. It seemed amazing when they described it. When the order came out. I did notice that did make it from scratch. The First bite pretty much set the tone. The potatoes were cooked but with no crispiness to them. The corned beef was chunky, but yielded not flavor. The plating was really nice, but the meal just lacked any kind of taste to it. I was really surprised about that. It was pretty bland tasting and had to add a lot of different sauces to make up for for the lack of taste. Needless to spell it out, I was disappointed in how the food had no body to it, but the saving face was, the service was really good. The wait staff did take care of any need I had or anticipated. Sadly, for a hometown diner, this little place just doesn't have the flavor to be on my map of places to visit again. read more

Always loved this grill but could never get a parking spot. Little Cheerful owner recently bought and now there is always parking, hmmm. For breakfast, you do not get a regular menu, just a page of just a few items. My friend loves the eggs Benny. Did not love the hot cocoa, said it was tasteless. I got the eggs,fried potatoes, bacon and toast. Eggs were scrambled perfectly. Bacon was good. The fried potatoes were overly deep fried and tasted terrible. Huge chunks of half cooked onions.
