I had the pleasure of finally finding this place in Bham. It's small looking from the outside but it's got that charming, warm feel once you get inside. They have a pretty extensive menu of breakfast choices when you really look at it in its entirety. It as busy when I got there, and with the large amount of seating, it wasn't more than a few minutes wait. I did take the time to look through it all and finally settled on D.J.'s Corned Beef Hash. It seemed amazing when they described it. When the order came out. I did notice that did make it from scratch. The First bite pretty much set the tone. The potatoes were cooked but with no crispiness to them. The corned beef was chunky, but yielded not flavor. The plating was really nice, but the meal just lacked any kind of taste to it. I was really surprised about that. It was pretty bland tasting and had to add a lot of different sauces to make up for for the lack of taste. Needless to spell it out, I was disappointed in how the food had no body to it, but the saving face was, the service was really good. The wait staff did take care of any need I had or anticipated. Sadly, for a hometown diner, this little place just doesn't have the flavor to be on my map of places to visit again. read more

Came here on a Saturday late morning and was seated immediately. Service was quick and friendly. The coffee was also very fresh and refilled regularly. The menu selection was varied, and came as full portions or half portions. I had the smoke salmon omelette that had spinach, onions and mushroom and a generous portion of hollandaise sauce spread on top of the omelette, with a side of hashbrown. Let me tell you, I have never had an omelette with such fresh ingredients in it. It was delicious! Portions are on the bigger side, but if you're super hungry, you can definitely finish the dish. read more

Diamond Jim's ... it's only been around since 1998 but it has the feel of a really good breakfast place from the 70s or 80s. Their best quality is variety: a big traditional breakfast, chicken fried steak, their "Landslide" (2 eggs, 2 sausage patties, 2 grilled biscuits, cheddar cheese, on top of potatoes and covered in country sausage gravy), Eggs Benedict (I recommend the sockeye salmon option), and the 222 (2 eggs, 2 bacon, sausage links or patty sausages, and 2 pancakes, French toast or biscuits and gravy), omelettes (again, I recommend the sockeye salmon) ... all very good. One of my favorite spots for breakfast in Bellingham - their breakfasts range in size from the 1-1-1 (1 egg, one piece of meat, one pancake) to giant, hearty portions, so there's something for everyone. Everything is served fresh, hot, and cooked to order. The service is great, and some of the staff has been there for years (since they were at their old location on State St. My favorite is the biscuits and gravy, just can't get enough of those. My hubby loves the AFP's (which DJ's is famous for). They also have free wi-fi. Large quantities of decent food at an affordable price. There's nothing that stands out about this place. Breakfast time always seems very busy which can mean a pretty long wait for seating. It's a small restaurant that seems to make a great attempt at packing it as full as possible to accommodate the crowd. The wait staff does a good job to meet everyone's needs. I was a little disappointed that there aren't substitutions allowed with meals. As a vegetarian, I'd like meals with the exception to the meat. No exceptions made. It is further out then most breakfast places in downtown bellingham which means the wait time is significantly shorter on Sunday mornings and it can accommodate larger groups. This place never fails to please. As a creature of habit, I always get the American classic with two scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit. The coffee is delicious. The hashbrowns are perfect, crispy and golden. The bacon is thick and perfect. My kid gets the eggs Benedict and loves it. She's picky, so this is high praise. Great service, always happy people. I am a sucker and live on breakfast place establishments, however, after a while eggs and potatoes can get boring. I envy those that can have the full on eggs, toast, hash and pancakes...the over indulgent buffet stretch pants breakfast. Diamond Jim's has gluten free bread and pancakes....holy shit, my breakfast adventures are back. They have a really reasonable substitution fee, better than Vancouver. They use Bob Mills brand which is what I use for baking. Familiar quality of GF flour used. I couldn't tell the difference between a GF pancake and a regular pancake...the rice flour was that awesome. Diamond Jim's has that...only I forgot the stretchy pants at home, which was much needed. I tend to forgot how large US food portions are, therefore, my little tummy could only eat so much. I had to pack the entire omelette and potatoes to go. I was so full from the pancakes that I didn't need another meal for the rest of the day. It gets busy really fast, however, the guy I am dating and I crossed the border very early before the rest of the shops opened. The wait was quoted around 25 minutes, however, we received our meals in about 15 minutes. Reading the other review on Yelp, most quoted a 45 minute wait (for the food), therefore, I was anticipating that when I walked in the door. In preparation for the anticipated long wait, I colored in a Care Bears coloring book that was provided by the restaurant and played Jenga with the jam packets (I put the jam packets back in the container after). The waitress was super friendly and cheerful. There was always someone coming over to refill your coffee on the house and your water. The prices for the portions are amazingly awesome, better than Denny's. read more

This is a really decent diner with some pretty awesome food. I was eating Whole30 when we visited last and wasn't really sure I could have anything on their menu (and had planned accordingly and brought a few snacks to get me through), but I asked our waitress and she was able to come up with something that was tasty and compliant! The waitstaff is a little overwhelmed sometimes (weekend mornings, as can be expected) but nothing terrible. Parking can be a nightmare during busy times. Gross is the first word that comes to mind when I think of this restaurant. A die-hard local recommended it so I went with an open mind (being a lover of classic greasy-spoon restaurants). The actual restaurant is very small and not very clean. The coffee tasted like it had chemicals of the cleaning variety in it, and don't look at the actual coffee pot they pour it out of the best word I can use to describe it is crusty. The food itself took about 1 hour to come out , I guess the cook was overworked with the three other tables he had. The hash browns were what I can only assume frozen for months perhaps years before they fry those things up and put them on your plate. The rest of the food is not even worth mentioning. I appreciate local diners that are rough around the edges but the food has to be good, hot, and fairly fast to want to come back. 2 stars are for the decent service read more

It's definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry (although they recently moved to a new space so perhaps the waits aren't as long!). Diamond Jim's is a diner, so my expectations for the restaurant are in line with other diners. I have only eaten at Diamond Jim's for breakfast. I became a fan years ago when they were located in the tiny triangle building on State Street that could not have been more typically a "diner". The 2-2-2 special has always been my favorite, old location or new. 2 plate-sized pancakes, 2 eggs (any style) and 2 pieces of pork (sausage or bacon). The pancakes today were very thin and delicious. Super light, seemingly lighter than I remember them being. In the past I have only had 1 pancake, but today 2 were just fine. The eggs are usually good, not fantastic, but good. The eggs today didn't seem the freshest and were a bit dry. The sausage are small sausages like those from the freezer case at the grocery store. The coffee is good, though today's seemed stronger (think "put hair on your chest" strong) than usual. I still like it. It is usually perfect. Agri-Bay Roasters is the brand of coffee, though I admit I haven't seen it elsewhere, I think it is a local company. The new location is easily 3 times the size of the old place, and everytime I have been, it has been packed. Usually if we get there before 9 AM on a weekend, we don't have to wait. Today we arrived at 8:40 and had to wait just 5 minutes. The decor is simple diner. Nothing fancy. In the past the noise in the main dining room was almost too much. But today we noticed that they management had installed sound-absorbing panels, and wow did they work! It was much, much quieter, we could even here the music they were playing. Very nice. The service is always good. Fairly fast, friendly, and always happy to help. I would recommend keeping your expectations in check and just enjoy a pleasant diner experience here at Diamond Jim's. If something doesn't suit you, I am pretty sure the competent wait staff will do all they can to help make it right! read more

Diner food, diner style. not as much atmosphere as the old location on State St, but I'm sure they will grow into it. Parking can be a bit of a problem when the neighborhood gets busy. My breakfast fave is the AFP's with 2 eggs and country sausage gravy. AFP's? A heapin' helpin' of hashbrowns mixed with goodies like bell peppers or whatever you might want. You could make a different combo every day for a month. Warning, they're filling! Service is cheery and the coffee is always handy. Great place to recover from the night before. read more

First off, I want to say that the food here is truly great and they're known for their large portions. That has always been the case and I'm pleased to see that hasn't changed. However, the consistently and extremely slow service greatly impacts my enjoyment of the place the past few years. Having said that, Diamond Jim's is a Bellingham must if you are any combination of the following: hungover, totally starving, don't want to be hassled by the wait staff and/or are in absolutely no rush. The portions here are very large, food is deliciously greasy (as any biscuits and gravy or patty melt should be) and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu for breakfast or lunch. I used to recommend this place to many a college acquaintance but once I started going in half as hungover as I did in college, I realized how slow everything is and how many of the employees seem to be in a bad mood. Having worked in food service I know how obnoxious it can be to work on a day you're not feeling great, but I've left DJ's irritated too many times not to notice any longer. With that in mind, if you're looking to spend some time with friends on a Sunday reliving the previous night's festivities over some scrumptious eats, this is a great place to go. Just don't expect to leave in any rush and there is often a wait for a table as well. Grab some coffee before you head in (and put your name on the list inside the door) to cure that headache while you wait for a table. read more
