One of my favorite breakfast places in Bellingham. They open at 7:00am so it's great for a breakfast meeting. The service is awesome, the people who work there are really friendly. I had to update my review for Diamond Jim's because there seem to have been some real improvements. I still don't go during the peak times, but in the off times service seems to have gotten much faster. The last few times I've been there I was surprised at how quickly I got my food. I can't say what it's like the during the busy times, but I avoid most places during their busy times. More importantly, the one thing that was really stopping me from giving them a 5 start before was the coffee. But they seem to have fixed whatever the issue was there. I really enjoy coffee with my breakfast and I could barely drink it the way it was before. Now it's pretty good which makes the breakfast experience much more enjoyable. The staff as always are friendly and nice. Probably my favorite breakfast place in town. read more

Having awoken thoroughly sauced after a walking pub crawl...the only man I would trust the state of my mind to was: Diamond Jim. Black-as-coal, slightly-burnt coffee with refills every time you dipped below the half-empty point. Over-easy eggs, pile of red taters, excellent biscuit, browned sausage links. Slow but fresh. No rush, so we sat in the corner booth feeling regal, imperial, like breakfast Kings while the morning rushed around us. Kudos to you Diamond Jim. I'll return. read more

Very good breakfast, we got in at 8 am by 9 they had a line. Had the chili omelet and good flavor and true home made chili no can here. Wanted chicken fried steak but it's our of a box. Come on Jim make it from scratch and make it stand out from the nuke it joints, at 12.95 you still save money. Wow had great Eva Benedict wait staff friendly. A good greasy spoon diner is a wonderful thing to find and Diamond Jim's fits the bill. Good staff, good food, my only complaint is that it isn't open for dinner, which makes going there more often difficult. UPDATE: Weekend mornings are NOT the time to go here. A friend and I went for brunch and ended up waiting 2 hours for our food. Note: the staff was terrific about this, it wasn't negligence on their part and they kept us well informed and made sure we knew they hadn't forgotten us, it was just THAT incredibly busy. I'd rather they took their time and got the food right rather than just slamming out mediocre food, but we were extremely hungry and should have gone elsewhere under the circumstances. Note to Disabled: Some steps between dining areas and uneven floors- watch your step! I have tripped on the same section of floor every time I have come here (older building, not much they can do about it). The restrooms are difficult to access with an assistive device. Went to Bellingham last weekend overnight, and we left early in the morning partly to beat the long weekend line-ups and partly 'cause I wanted to have brunch out as part of our micro-holiday. Any excuse to have brunch will do! Met up with a friend here, so we could get some food in us before we started our shopping. Fully expected at least a 30 minute wait as this place is quite popular - with good reason! We were lucky though, and only had about a 15 minute wait. I wanted to check this place out as it seems like it has a diner feel to it, and that automatically puts it high on my list of places to try. The food is above average, and really satisfying. They've got pretty typical American fare - biscuits and sausage gravy, which our friend had and said was excellent. I had bacon, poached eggs, shredded hashbrowns (yay!) with a side of hollandaise, which was pretty typical packaged stuff. My boyfriend had a scramble with a few different kinds of meat with their famous American Fried Potatoes. These are basically proper hashbrowns which can almost never be found here these days as those nasty deep-fried cubes of something that vaguely resembles potato is the norm here. I also had a wicked $5 Mimosa which, was mainly sparkling and just enough orange juice to colour it - EXACTLY the way I like it. Not to mention it was in a large wine glass with no ice, but perfectly chilled. All in all, we were all happy with what we got. Last, but certainly not least is the service. They were busy, but they kept on top of everything, and frequently came by to check on our coffee levels.The lady we had was really sweet and the type of person that can call me "dear" or "honey" and me not mind it one bit. The prices are right too. Definitely going here again, and next time, I'm gettin' my shopping out of the way first so I can have more than one drink, cause "drunky shopping" is never a good idea for me. I've been here say...6 or 7 times since we moved to Bellingham 2 years ago. We usually only go when family is in town. Sometimes you have to wait a bit to get seated at busy times, but it has ALWAYS been worth it. Every single thing I've eaten here has been cooked well and tasted wonderful. I've done omelettes, pancakes, AFPs, etc. My brother has ordered one of their lunch sandwiches and it was good too. HUGE portions and attentive, friendly waitstaff. Coffee is a local company, many of the ingredients are from local companies...all of which I love. It's not the best breakfast place ever ever, but it's pretty dang great breakfast diner. I'd recommend it for sure, especially if you're bringing family or bigger group. read more

Diamond Jim's is a tiny place with huge portions. The service is fast and friendly - and the food is quite good. It's a diner/grill/cafe - but with a smile and it's not greasy. It's also clean! I like the 2/2/2, but everybody has their own preferences. Come to think of it - the AFP's (hashbrowns) are kller too - I like mine with veggies in it. My husband, two kids and I visited Diamond Jim's today for the first time. I've heard a lot of good things about DJ's and I think it lived up to the hype. I've noticed most of the places we go for breakfast leave a lot to be desired. DJ's had true home-cooked food -- nothing was pre-fab or junk and the portions were large. My husband enjoyed his thick slices of french toast, and I had the best omelet, ever - covered in cheese and filled with onions, mushrooms and sausage. Everyone at the table ate their fill of the AFP (hash browns). Even though the restaurant had plenty of open tables, we waited about 10 minutes to get seated. Food took a while to arrive at our table, but I think it's worth it for freshly made items. We will definitely come here again. read more

My husband heard this place was great for breakfast, so we went in around 11am today. Loved that you can grab any table you like and there were plenty open. The booths and tables looked brand new and the whole place was very clean (bathrooms included). I ordered the French Dip sandwich and it was delicious, but a little pricey at $11. The fries were very tasty as well. My husband got a half order of the Country Benedict and added a pancake. It was tons of food and he raved about the gravy and the pancake. He also managed to eat half of my sandwich. My daughter had the kids cheeseburger which was pretty standard. But the price was great and they used real cheese - so that is great! Stopped here for breakfast on the way home from a mountain adventure. The place was very busy but we got a seat at the counter immediately. We both got our breakfast within 20 minutes, I got a veggie omelet and the guy got chicken fried steak. The man said his food was good and his steak could be cut with an average knife, it wasn't a chainsaw type situation. My omelet was good it had a glorious assortment of veggies in it. DJ's rocks! I would give it 5 stars if it weren't so tiny and had more veggie options. My husband and I eat here on weekends on and off for years. The service is great, the place is clean, the portions are HUGE and good, and the coffee is great (we are picky about our coffee, this is TONYS coffee here). If you like meat try their house made corned beef hash, my husband loves it there and there only. I usually get the greek omelette or a veggie scramble. They have several veggie options, but they are fairly standard (veggie scramble, mexi-omelette, american fries w/veggies, greek omelette, etc..) I wish they had an option for organic eggs and also smoked salmon as an ingredient in one of their breakfast dishes. then it would be perfect! Warning though, this place is tiny, like a closet. So get there before 9am and you will probably get a seat. Or after 11. But anywhere in between on the weekends and you'll be waiting outside for a table. The only other downer that i can think of here is that they give styrofoam to-go containers. Usually you have leftovers, I will have to bring my own container I guess because I can't stand styrofoam, I don't care how cheap it is. read more

Would be a 4-star review, but my party of 4 had to wait too long to receive our food after ordering (30-40 minutes). When we asked the friendly cashier, he said they weren't particularly busy (though the dining room was mostly full). However, the food was a nice surprise: definitely above typical diner food. The AFP potatoes were delicious, with corned beef hash not from a can and excellent grated cheese on top. The eggs had bright orange yolks, suggesting local/pasture-raised eggs, a real plus for me. The salmon eggs benedict a companion had was said to be very good. The decaf coffee was not bad, but not great. read more

I have been a customer of Diamond Jim's Grill off and on for about 5 years now. I always thought the prior location was a bit too small and I am pleased to see them in their larger new home. They seem to fit in rather nicely on this side of town too, and parking is less of a hassle. While it does mean it takes me a bit longer to drive out to it, I find it quite worthwhile. As far as I'm concerned they serve the best breakfast in town, perfect for a casual weekend morning. NOTE: Prices have gone up and portion size has gone down a bit over the years, but I think this is just a sign of the times, and I also see MANY of my favorite places doing similarly. read more

Food is great. Service is okay. Portions are generous. Waitresses are friendly. Ordering eggs over easy is always with a lecture and a discrepancy. For some reason, if you want eggs cooked over-easy here, they'll tell you to order them over-medium???? The kitchens full of singers. On weekends, this place is jammed packed and food could be 45 minutes but well worth the wait. During the week, it's pretty standard wait times 10-20 minutes. I'd rather wait for fresh food than to eat something waiting to be served so I don't mind the wait. read more

Well, me and my family checked out this restaurant out on a whim. Walked in, recognized it instantly as the stereotypical greasy diner--not a bad thing, mind you. I went through about three cups of coffee (albeit not great coffee) before we finally received our orders. Talk about SLOW, maybe that's our fault for going there on a Sunday morning, but they seriously need some work in the kitchen department. Fortunately enough, the food is worth the wait. I ordered a 2/2/2 (eggs/bacon/pancakes), and cleaned off my plate. I didn't have a chance to try their famed AFP's, however that's something I'll do next time I'm in town. They are well known in the area as a great breakfast diner. My wife and child have gone there in the past, but apparently quality has significantly slipped. Went there today with a party of 6 (5 adults and a toddler). Drinks came fast (though the 'small' milk was ridicusouly small at maybe 8-9oz).... and then we waited. Service for drink refills was excellent and is why this isnt 1 star. An hour later (literally, was able to check based on a text sent) after watching smaller parties receive food, eat, and leave after we sat down... we received our food. It was not hot. The "AFP"'s were over oily. Food was pretty good tasting otherwise. 2 at our party said it was better than their last visit, which is unfortunate. A longer wait to get in, but if you want way better food - go to the Hilltop down the Guide. We won't return unless we hear something has seriously changed. read more

The food here at Diamond Jims is as good as any breakfast place in town, however, the time sitting at your table waiting for your food is the worst in town. I have been here many times and can assure you, even after being seated you will be waiting a minimum of 40 minutes before you see your food. Personally, I love omelette's. I also love potatoes. Especially when chopped up in little bits, fried and seasoned well. I also love really big pancakes. If you do too, I *highly* recommend Diamond Jim's. Its a quaint little corner restaurant with barely enough seating not to be sitting in your neighbors lap, but who cares when food is this good?! When you arrive you can generally seat yourself, but you may have to wait 5 minutes for a table... this place is busy! On your table are already the lunch and breakfast menu's for your selection, a napkin dispenser so you don't have to ask for more napkins (always a plus!), a jam basket, salt, pepper, sugar, and a container of some special spices. For about $8.50 you can get a LARGE omelet with Ham and TILLAMOCK Cheese. This takes up half your plate! The other half of the plate is AFPs, or American Fried Potatoes, seasoned to perfection. For an extra $2 (or is it $1?) you can change your toast or biscuit into pancakes. No... not just pancakes... 2 LARGE pancakes the size of your plate. If you have somebody with you, and you both order the same thing it is a bit tricky to balance the 4 plates, 2 water glasses, and coffee or juice glasses. If you order pancakes you get a carafe of hot maple syrup, and with the potatoes also comes a trio of Tabasco Sauces. Smoked-Chipotle, Regular and Green for you weaklings. I suggest trying them all before you decide, but the smoked is my favorite! Anyway, the food only takes 15 minutes to come out (unlike what Impatient Chloe says on here) and if you're a true meat lover.... try the meat lovers omelet! read more

This is normally one of my favorite breakfast places but today the service was absolutely terrible our busser was great but our waitress was horrible. My fiancé asked for his eggs over easy and Katie (the waitress) said "well I'm gonna just order them over medium so the whites are set and the yolks are runny " and shocker the eggs were way over cooked and he got Stone Cold Steve potatoes after waiting 45 minutes for our food. Breakfast is alright. Traditional greasy American fare. You can't get organic eggs there is the main downfall. We had an average experience. The service was ok, the food was all prepared right, it just isn't very special. It's nice that they moved into the neighborhood.
