I have been going to Horatio's for years. This year I introduced my fiancé and a friend to the restaurant for their first time. We went on Thanksgiving and it was wonderful. They loved the food and the service was awesome. So we decided to do it again for Christmas. What a let down! The prime rib was tough and had huge pieces of grizzle. My friend ordered sautéed mushrooms extra and never received them. The signature key lime pie that I always order was weird color and tasted horrible. But worst of all was our server. To say she was horrible is an understatement! She would disappear and we could not get service. In fact, the waiter at the table next to us noticed and came over to ask us if he could help. Very juicy ribeye. Great ambience so I'm surprised why it wasn't even half full on a Sat evening, but no complaints of course. Super easy to get an OpenTable reservation the day of. Crab dip is small and you have to request the house bread with it because it comes with hard, trash bread. Lobster bisque is not good anymore, it taste like cream & cheap wine. Also comes is a tiny, tiny bowl which h really is a cup. The flat bowl it used to come in is NO MORE. New Wngland Clam Chowder is blah and the "bowl" is the same size as the "cup"...lol. Cesar salad is not good anymore. It used to come with thick Cesar dressing, now the dressing tastes like a cheap cesar vinegrette if that even makes sense. The male host & server Angela were Perfect!!! Thank you both!!!! We purchased our entrees to go, so I'll update about the Prime Rib later on. Stay Tuned. My best friend had this place on her list to try so we ended up going this past weekend. We were seated right away but wasn't even acknowledged for a while. Since we were catching up, we didn't think much of it. Our server finally greeted us, I believe her name was Destiny. We ordered the berry mule, mojito, crab dip, clam chowders, a Caesar, and the shrimp scampi. It took them forever to bring out our drinks and water. Our server was nice enough to inform us the bartender missed making our drinks but wow it took a long time. We had already got our mains and then our drinks arrive. Our server was very sweet and checked on us many times. We didn't realize until later but they never brought our dip that we ordered but also didn't charge us for it. Thank you to Alex(is) not sure of name this lovely lady gave me after kind and generous support she provided in resolving a simple issue of me ordering Prime Rib for pick up and once I arrived it turned out they didn't serve it on Monday. So it was replaced with Ribeye. Food was fine. But what was absolutely horrible is a young 'host' in the front who ignored my request to speak with a manager or anyone that could help make sense out of nonsense she was insisting on - namely 'cancel order (aka be charged), and no replacement of order can be made because -it has to match the order.' She was a bully looking down on someone she thought and said as much was 'picking up for uber,' and turned her back when I asked to speak with anyone other than them. Shame on you. Some people have no business working with people at all. Very hateful young person disrespectful and toxic energy like I have not experienced in a very long time. Thankfully I am resourceful enough to find my way around such a bully and reached out for support inside the dining area. Like I shared with Alex(is) the so called 'hostess' is lucky it was not someone much less patient or seasoned in age that she was treating this way as both her and Horatio would have been social media famous really quickly and not in favorable light at all. We were seated about 20 minutes after our reservation on Mother's Day. It was packed! The service was a bit slow but it was to be expected as they were so busy. The food was amazing! And I'm not one to say that about most restaurants. Everything that entered my mouth was delicious. The table bread. Bomb! The crab & artichoke dip. Bomb! We had multiple dirty glasses (with lipstick stains or dirt on them) Issues with our food order, either it was the wrong item, food was cold or incorrectly prepared. I've heard good things about this place and decided to give it a try on 10/22/252 at 5:30 for dinner. I should have known from the start this was going to be bad. The dining room was almost empty except for the bar area. We sat down waited and waited until finally we had to flag down the waiter for a menu. Waiting again we had to flag down the waiter to give him our order. While we were waiting for our meal, two separate parties came in and sat next to us. After a long wait we finally had to ask the busboy to get our waiter and find out where our dinner was. In a few minutes a young man came out and apologized and said they were in training and dinner would be delayed. Our dinner finally arrived. It was very good, a little cold but tasty. Unfortunately the poor service had spoiled the meal by then. The couple down the row got into an argument with our waiter and demanded they pack their dinner and left. It took 15 mins for our orders to be taken and then 30 mins for drops of our food to arrive. Located in the Marina in San Leandro which isn't the greatest area but I wanted to be near the water and this place fit the bill. Typical old school seaside restaurant vibe with dark wood interior and old carpeting but tons of great windows that overlooked the water and the boats docked right outside. This place reminds me of somewhere my grandparents would have come to in their youth for special occasions and now feels like Captain Jack Sparrow might hang out as a regular in the bar. That's my very polite way of saying that Horatio's is in desperate need of a facelift. Service was good both times we came (twice in 5 days) and the servers were very attentive. Clearly a locals hang out as the bar was full of guys who looked like they just got off work. Totally causal and having good conversation. Our table was slightly sticky but I think that was just built up over time. Both times we came, we sat in the bar area at a table overlooking the water. Sadly the shades had to be pulled for much of the time because the sun was hitting the water pretty hard and was super bright. However they did raise the blinds as soon as that was no longer an issue. Being near the water makes my heart happy so once those blinds went up, I was a happy lady. What we ordered both nights: DINNER 1 (they were nice enough to split both entrees so we each got to try everything) ** Tequila Sunrise - just "okay". A little sweet for my taste but since they were out of grapefruit juice I couldn't get my standard Greyhound. Could have used a bit more tequila. ** Oven Roasted Crab and Artichoke Dip $18 - I don't know know why I keep ordering this from places because I should know that I don't like hot crab with cheese. The shrimp were butterflied and sort of on the small side which wouldn't have been an issue if they weren't way over cooked. Total bummer and because they were over fried, they had no flavor so using the dippy sauce was a must. I wouldn't order these again. ** Clam Chowder $11.50 - They split this into two smaller cups since they only sell it by the bowl. It was really good. Thick and creamy with lots of potatoes and clams. They split this for us as well - I'll be honest, by the time the burger came out, I was STUFFED. But I did manage to take a bit and the burger was delicious. We wandered into Horatio's without a reservation after an event across the street. Luckily, they were super accommodating and were able to seat us right away. We ordered a few appetizers and a round of waters, followed by clam chowder and the waygu sirloin steak. All of the food was delicious. No complaints! My steak was cooked perfectly, and everything else was seasoned very well. Just the right amount of salt! The menu has a good variety of options for people of all diets and was reasonably priced. Even though I'm a Yelper of, shall we say, a certain vintage, I still don't feel like I'm part of the target demo for this old school seafood restaurant. I'm not surprised this is part of the same chain that includes Skates on the Bay at the Berkeley Marina and Kincaid's in Burlingame because they all have the same Eisenhower-era baby boomer vibe. I really didn't come here by intention. I was just finishing my steps on the Bay Trail at Marina Park and thought a takeout order would be a reasonable reward.
