We used to be regulars at the previous Paradise Grill, because of the exceptional staff, the lovely feeling of being out in the country (in spite of a 4 minute drive from our suburban house), and the better than average food. But. (There's always a but.) The previous upper management apparently lost interest, we no longer recognized the staff, and the food suffered. And the drinks went WAY up in price. So we quit going. Another but. (A good one!) Julie and Trevor are back, the food is better than ever with a new chef turning out fresher and delicious cuisine, and it's still got that away from the world feeling. Like rediscovering an old friend who has actually improved with age, The Meadows is back. I hope they can keep this level of quality going, because if so, their previous patronage will return. After us, of course. October 3rd, 2015 So, we've become regulars again. Even though The Meadow is still open only for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings (hope this changes, would be faboo venue for weekend brunches), we've tried to sample most everything on the menu and the specials as well. So far, so good. All the meals have been well above average restaurant fair, and given the quality and preparation, quite reasonable. Cocktails are tasty and well poured, the wine list isn't extensive but the selections are good. If you want to bring a bottle from home, corkage is $10. Perhaps the most obvious change is the attitude of the staff, they're really working hard to earn back the business. If you haven't been in awhile, check it out. read more

This review is for Mother's Day brunch at The Meadows restaurant. The food is average, the service is decent, and the setting is pleasant (with lovely golf course views). The spread was decent, but the quality of the food was quite average: 1) Fruit medley - fresh and tasty 2) Mac & cheese - decent 3) Wild rice - okay 4) Salmon - not very good (it was drowning in a not very appealing white sauce and made my mom nauseous) 5) Omelette bar - good, though the toppings were a bit limited and the cook overcooked / burned one of our omelettes 6) French toast - okay 7) Cheese blintz - okay 8) Waffles - dry 9) Pecan squares - a bit soggy 10) Bagels - decent We also had an unpleasant experience when we first arrived, but I must acknowledge that the restaurant staff did their best to handle the situation. We were seated at a table adjacent to one with a large family, and the large family indicated to the staff that they needed our table as well to properly accommodate their family. They had made a reservation in advance, as had we. It was unfortunate that the restaurant had overbooked. Our hostess first offered us a table in the bar (which was an isolated space on the other side of building, far away from the buffet). However, when we explained this space would not work for us (especially for my elderly mother, who can't walk very far or fast), the hostess spoke with the manager and found an alternative solution. They set up a new table in the main dining room that was quite close to the buffet - it was in a high traffic area, with lots of people brushing by us to get to the buffet - but it was much better than the previous offer. It was an unfortunate situation (they obviously shouldn't have overbooked in the first place), but our hostess handled it in a very professional manner (when the gentleman from the adjacent table came up to her and said, "You need to reseat these people now" she very professionally responded, "I will not uproot their senior citizens without first finding them an appropriate place to be reseated.") I really appreciated that. The restaurant had lovely floor to ceiling views of the golf course, and I would suggest requesting a table by the windows if you can. Overall, we had a decent Mother's Day brunch at The Meadows, though the food and seating situation could have both been much better. read more

Mediocre food and even worse service. Don't get confused if they're having an event dinner (which often happens). The restaurant, as you enter from the rear where the parking lot is, is on the left hand side, all the way to the front of the building. Kale salad was plumped up with lots of chopped celery. Ugh! Prime rib was big and properly cooked, but rib-eye steak, supposedly same weight (14 oz), was half the size and almost raw despite both meats being ordered med-rare. Short rib was chuck, not short rib, in a boring marinara. Vegetables on plate were ice-cold. This also happened to the scallop pasta: one order was sauced and perfect - but the other came without any sauce, and everything on it was ice-cold. If you are dragged here against your will, stick to the prime rib or maybe a burger. read more

This restaurant is amazing. We had a few well made (strong) drinks in the bar, then walked into the dining area where a nice table with a golf course view awaited us. Within 30 seconds a friendly waiter checked in and told us about the specials. He made sure our water drinks were filled, brought out the fresh baked bread, and asked if he could get anyone anything else (drinks, etc.). My brother-in-law Steve and I ordered the 8 ounce prime rib. When it came, it looked a lot larger than 8 ounces. We were both glad we didn't order the larger size. The quality of the prime rib was first rate. Not very much fat at all, and perfectly cooked. The only downside (and this may just be my personal preference) is that I thought the horseradish sauce could have been hotter. It was just a touch on the mild side. Maybe they can offer a choice between mild and hot when people place a prime rib order? This, however, is not worthy of a star reduction... just a suggestion. My sister-in-law Suzie ordered the boneless beef short ribs. She loved it so much she offered bites to everyone at the table. It was delicious. My nephew ordered fish and chips... he didn't share, but said they were the best he's tasted. My wife had the salmon. It came in a very artful presentation. Onion rings on the top, spinach, etc. First rate all the way. She loved it. Two things really going here are the atmosphere, and the quietness. Looking out onto the golf course was very nice. Lack of noisiness was priceless. So many restaurants these days are LOUD. For me, since I'm a bit older now, it's difficult to hear what people are saying when there is a lot of noise. Several of us mentioned how nice it was. We all could relax and enjoy the experience. One of our friends brought in a home made lemon pie, and Julie (manager) didn't have a problem with our BYOD (Bring Your Own Dessert) - just as long as she and the waitress could have a small slice. Julie was very friendly, and it seems like she's trying very hard to offer a first class dining experience to everyone. If you're planning on doing this, though, I'd suggest that you do what we did - call in advance and ask if it would be okay. If you're in the area, I encourage you to come here for drinks and/or dinner. I think you'll be as impressed as we were. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area. read more

My husband and I have dined here often and we never are dissappointed! We love the location - close to home, but not on the main blvd. The staff is attentive and personable. Most impressive - the food! My favorite is the braised short ribs. They are so tender and flavorful every time! The polenta that accompanies them is creamy and delicious, too! My husband had one of the specials - the rack of lamb. He describes them as being superb! We have also enjoyed their salmon and scallops in the past. Last night we finished our meal with the chocolate mousse cake - so yummy! We recommend this restaurant for a great dining experience! It is a gem!! read more

Today The Meadows earned their fifth star our party of 8 enjoyed a great meal, all of the entree's were perfect Short Ribs, Ribeye Steak, Prime Rib, & Evan the Children's Chicken Strips were all wonderful. Trevor and the wait staff as good as any restaurant I've been. Julie thank you for the Birthday treat. There only open Friday & Saturday for now. My wife and I ate there last night (02/17/18), celebrating my wife's birthday. Everything was wonderful - the service was great (albeit, the restaurant was not crowded and there was no event going on) and the prime rib dinner was one of the best we have ever had (every bit as good as the House of Prime Rib in S.F.). We could cut the prime rib with a butter knife, it was cooked perfectly and very tasty. I do not understand why this restaurant is not more crowded - beautiful setting, very nice ambiance, great service, wonderful food, and at a very reasonable price! I hesitated at posting this review, because I enjoy the peaceful experience and fear encouraging a crowd, but the restaurant does deserve the credit for an experience well done! read more

We were very apprehensive about this place based on other reviews.. bad service, good food.. We wanted good food and were close to this place so we opted to take a chance putting up with bad service for the good food!! Low and behold, our experience was very pleasant.. On a Saturday night around 730 pm, the place was half full, and the staff was on top of it. The bread and water came within a couple of minutes and the pleasant waitress was very attentive the entire time. Throughout the dinner multiple staff came to our table asking if everything was OK. Oh, and the food was excellent. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Castro Valley. read more

Great food!!! My husband and I were here on Valentine's Day. Everyone there was so friendly and the food was delicious!! We had the kobe burger with avacado and bacon, the filet minionettes, and the very tasty Moroccan Cake- curry and chicken! Julie was our waitress and she was so friendly. It was a gorgeous scenery at the Meadows. We will definitely be back and bring our daughter. We also want to check out the Bar and Grill next time for lunch. read more

Lol. This place sucks. It took forever for anyone to acknowledge us. Walking into the bar, into the restaurant, back to the bar. .. I wanted to just leave right then... but we stayed. I will admit the calamari was great. I should have stopped there. I ordered the bacon avacado burger medium with just those items. It came grey and crunchy overcooked, with onions and everything. The avacado was sitting on the onions, so it was ruined. And get this. .. no bacon, no fries! Just a grey burger all by itself. And 1/2 pound? I didn't know they included the weight of the plate. 17 dollars. And it took forever. All the while ms. Fancy high boots manager is walking around talking to everyone but us. Not noticing our empty cups, sad faces or anything. Totally useless. We got there over an hour before closing. But it took so long we were there until closing time as well as a couple other tables. They stated blowing out candles and turning the lights off before people were done! If your restaurant didn't suck so bad, I would have left much earlier. And they couldn't even knock a beer of the tab or something for failing so hard. But it's all good, I'll never ever go back. read more

My boyfriend and I had a reservation here last night at 7. The hostess sat us down, asked if we wanted water and bread, then said our server would be with us momentarily. He never came over, avoided eye contact with us, then engaged and served people that came in AFTER US! It was notable that we were the only people of color in the restaurant! Needless to say, when the 3rd couple came in and got served BEFORE us, we were livid!!! I went to the hostess and asked for the manager, who just so happened to be the other server! She told me that there was a wedding party in the event room and service was tight....NOT MY PROBLEM!!!! There were able to wait on the others that came in. We waited and watched this fiasco for 45 minutes! Oh, did I mention that we were the ONLY people of color in the room. One customer even came up to us and told us he was totally embarrassed that we were treated like that, and that he had been coming there for years and he was going to stop patronizing them!!!! I can't comment on the food, because after talking to the " manager", we left! She did offer to give us dinner on the house....my point to her was...if this establishment doesn't want to serve US, they WE don't want them to! Keep your food and antiquated practices to yourselves! I did notice that they got good reviews...but none from people of color!!! I'm sure their food is great, but I will NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!! In fact, as a business owner, I'm totally aware of word of mouth advertising! And I plan to bad mouth this place wherever I go, as well as to ALL my clients! This is not a place I would recommend for hosting an event nor do I even plan to stop by here again as a customer. Julie , the Mgr of this location conducts herself in a very unprofessional matter under pressure. She walked into our event very disrespectful numerous times with nonsense complaints of the event. The food arrived late and leftovers were never given to us. I have hosted many events in my time, and never were we asked to turn down the music nor treated the way we were. During the event, she was seen multiple times acting and showing frustration to us and her employees who's were understanding of our concerns. I don't see how people could be content with working in that type of environment. If I could , I would post the videos of Julie's "moments" that were captured by our Professional Cameraman. read more

We just moved to castro valley 10 months ago and the only disappointment was food. I am a chef and have a catering company and like to go out and eat well. I heard the meadows was under new management and had a new chef so we went to try it out. I was not expecting much, but I was very surprised. We started out with homemade bread which was a great surprise, then a real Ceasars salad with anchovies and home made dressing. I had cod over ozzo and roasted corn with a avocado puree...great (a little surprise the ozzo and corn was cold but still tasted great). My son of 6 yrs was happy with his fish and chips. Father in law had amazing scallops with pureed parsnips in a buerre blanc sauce and husband had the prime rib. We all left happy. Super excited this is 1 mile.from my house I hope castro valley supports this great addition. One star gone for the carpet....the food is new but the carpet old. So when you go there don't be distracted by the carpet. Your meal will be still be great read more

Myself and two friends decided to try this restaurant last Friday before attending a play. We were at the restaurant with 90 minutes to spare. There was an event there that evening and looking at other reviews perhaps that's why we had such bad service. We had to go to the bar ourselves for drinks as the server said he was quite sure he couldn't repeat the drink names to the bartender - what? That was our clue, we should have left. We ordered 1 beef dinner and 2 Cod dinners. Waiting 30 minutes, 45 minutes, the server mistook Cob salad for the Cod dinner and brought a Cob salad no one ordered. We left after 80 minutes waiting, only the beef dinner was served, My two friends ended up splitting that meal, but the two other meals never came. I ended us with a Wendy's burger at 11 pm after the play. Honestly, myself and my friends ageee, we have NEVER experienced such poor service. Do yourself a favor, don't eat here! read more

The Meadows Restaurant at Redwood Canyon Golf Course (formerly Willow Park) is undergoing a complete transformation. It's under new management and the new chef is turning out some amazing meals ranging from fresh fish and chips to pan seared scallops wirh parsnip puree and calvados burre blanc which were amazing! Currently it's reservation only on Friday and Saturday night but should be having a grand opening soon. I look forward to trying everything on the menu. The bar has been updated and now has 6 TV's making it a great place to watch sports while dining. My husband and I are so happy both restaurant and bar are back open! Went to the Meadows for the second time and the food quality remains cosistant. Prime Rib, fried chicken, Polenta and creamed corn excellent!. New decor really makes it comfortable to gaze at he beautiful scenery. Looks like they are really trying to make this a great facikity. Great quality and quantity for the miney. The food was great! the atmosphere is very nice, but the servers are less to be desired!!!! We visited last Friday night around 7 pm and the bar tender was rude and abrupt, our server tried but his comments were unnecessary. Instead of just greeting us saying "i'll be right with you", he said sorry on a mission to deliver food i'll be back". then helped the table next to us first, then asked to take our order and failed to mention the specials, and licked his fingers as he past by us several time.. EWWW!!! the staff is just plain brash and sloppy, which is just to bad because the place could be a gem with the right servers!!! read more

I attended a work holiday dinner in the banquet room of the Meadows restaurant. The Meadows is located within the Castro Valley golf course and there is a lovely view of the course as you drive up and through the large window in the rear of the banquet room. The banquet room, although not fancy, has all of the essential things: bar, dance floor, good floor space to seat at least 120 people. Our event only had 66 people and took up about 1/3 of the space with tables and chairs. The dinner event included a no-host bar, appetizers, and dinner. The appetizers were simple yet well thought out. They included a very good spinach dip, crackers, cheese and fruit. The meal was served buffet style and included a delicious salad with lots of variety, nuts, cheese, the bread rolls were delicious, the sautéed vegetables were perfectly cooked and not heavy or overly seasoned. The meat included a fantastic boneless beef short rib and a chicken in a caper lemon sauce. There was a vegetarian main dish option for our vegetarian guests that was absolutely delicious! If you are considering a large party/reception and you are wanting to have a comfortable location to do it where the FOOD is very good, I do recommend The Meadows! Sometimes people pay a lot for the "ambience " of a location and the food suffers. This is a good balance between those two things where the food actually shines and I believe it is much more budget-friendly. Highly recommended! read more

Amazing how a simple salad sets the tone of 2 stars. I sat in the bar for lunch and was given a salad that had blackened leaves throughout. If this place wants to be lifted up as a hidden gem as the previous owners were, step up your food quality. Your prices are stepped up so why not the delivery. I will be back in a few months to see if they deliver quality but if they don't, it will be the last time. The staff was attentive and I have no issues with that. The cooked food was good, I have no issues with the cook. My issue is with the quality of the "fresh" food. read more

We had our daughter's Quinceañera in the ball room . Family and friends all said they loved the food and the ambiance ,with the golf course outdoors as a beautiful back drop . We also surprised our guests with a wedding and everything flowed perfectly with the help of the staff whom were all in on the surprise ! Julie the event coordinator is awesome ,she truly felt like part of our family and listened to our needs and concerns . Was just there for a large meeting and we had a unique situation. How much water do you have? It was getting hot for many of the older people there. Another very kind man and I obtained nearly 70 bottles of water for the group outside. The bartender (J) was very helpful and even gave a large tray of ice to chill them. Later I came back for an appetizer of Fried Calamari. I was hesitant at first but asked a very helpful server (K) if it was good, she said yes and I went with it. I was thinking that I'm going to get breaded rubber bands, but what came out was Great Fried Calamari (WITH tentacles) in a light crunchy breading. Generous portion with a light lemon aoili, garnished with fresh lemons. I will be back in less that a week for more of their dishes (that are very affordable for the quality so far). They get 5 stars for the great service provided given the crowd of 500+ people along with the regular golfers playing. Thanks again, and see you soon. read more

Very very bad service waited an hour and a half to be served after our order was taken the food came and it was cold nobody wanted to say anything because they were hungry I do not recommend this restaurant it's hard to get waited on it's hard to get service and it's hard for the server to understand what you want and your needs for a restaurant is expensive as it is I can get better service at McDonald's the gentleman that waited on us his presentation of himself is not very desirable he seems he doesn't shave it's personal hygiene is not to be desired read more

This place kinda ruined our Valentines dinner. We had made our reservations for 7:00pm, and we were seated promptly. That's about as good as it got. We sat there for 20 minutes without anybody coming over to take drink order or dinner order. As we sat there we were over hearing the couple next to us complain that their food was cold and would the staff microwave it! WOW, we then decided to cut our losses and get while the getting was good, as we were leaving we could hear other tables complaining about the horrible service. To bad CV really needs a decent restaurant. New owners need to make major improvements, we used to have dinner there about once every couple of months read more

This is a great hidden neighborhood gem restaurant. Located in a beautiful secluded canyon adjacent to the Redwood Canyon golf course, the restaurant is only open Friday and Saturday nights. Good Food, good service, very quiet - a great place to have a relaxing dinner. The restaurant would also be the perfect spot for a small group or a banquet. I live out of town but travel frequently to San Leandro. I've been introduced to several local restaurants when I'm in the area. I think I found a new favorite....Four of us ate at the Meadows last night and we all were very much satisfied with a great meal...Steak was fabulous....very quiet nice atmosphere....could be romantic as well...:) I really enjoyed everything and will definetly be back. I was so let down - more than disappointed. Went there for early dinner on 12/31/15. Advised to come early when making reservations because they were going to be really busy. Our table was one of two occupied. Waiter came and described specials - RACK OF LAMB!!! I'm in!! My all time favorite!! Ordered it medium and husband ordered off of regular menu. Manager had been by table and chatted with us and I remember telling her that I was thrilled that the rack was one of the specials that evening. Rack came out (nice and meaty) but looked more beige in color than if it had been broiled. Cut into it and it was stone cold raw. Sent back. Came out some time later and it was still extremely rare. Sent back. Watched husband eat his entire meal. Busser came by 3 times to ask how meal was. I looked at him and then at my empty place setting and then back at him. No words exchanged. It took a very long time before my meal came out again and when it did - it was absolutely charred throughout. I should have taken a picture of it to go along with this review. I was actually quite surprised that the waiter couldn't see what he was about to serve me and if he couldn't confront the kitchen then he should have taken it by the manager and showed her what he was about to put in front of me. I don't think wait staff are allowed to think on their own. I was offered Prime Rib many times in place of the rack but like I explained to them, the Prime Rib is on the menu all the time, if I wanted Prime Rib I would not have hesitated to order it (they don't do a bad job on that). But... I'd had my fill of beef recently and the rack was way too appealing to pass up. These are some conclusions I have come to: 1) If your cook doesn't know how to cook the specials - don't offer them. 2) If your cook doesn't know how to determine meat temperature - buy him a meat thermometer. One thing for sure: Shame on you for allowing your cook to vent his frustrations on me due to his inability to judge the meat's temperature. Notice the word CHEF was never used in this review. Bill was discounted. We went home and I made myself a tuna sandwich. read more
