Drive down a well marked road and you arrive at a beautiful spot with plenty of picnic tables and shade. Among the wonderful things they offer: homemade pies, delicious sourdough bread, freshly picked produce and fruit. The whole Sacramento and Placerville area raves about their peaches. This is a good place to enjoy the free coffee and tea and buy many pies. Dogs are welcome with food and water.

Love this hidden gem. We stopped by for my favorite Satsuma tangerines currently in season but couldn't leave without taking home a few baked goods from their bakery that is under new ownership & newly remodeled. Their pies were delicious but the organic sour dough bread won me over!

Beautiful countryside while driving up Wallace Road to Hooverville orchard.

Hooverville Orchards is a small family ran orchard in Placerville, CA. It's off the beaten track. It's not on Apple Hill. What it does have is a u-pick rose garden, picnic area, and on-site bakery. In the bakery, they sell seasonal fresh farm grown fruit, baked goods, and jams and jellies. The operation is on a much smaller scale and more traditional low key than Apple Hill. Less hubbub. The small shopfront bakery makes cookies, pies... tons of pies. They sell frozen pies and fresh baked ones on two sizes (6 in and 9 in). They also sell ice cream by the scoop. Pie Al la mode anyone? The woman that helped me in the bakery was the best. She had a great attitude with a bright smile. Even when the shop got busy, she made sure to welcome and engage with everyone. I bought a 6 inch peach & raspberry pie and three jumbo peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. The prices were a bit cheaper or comparable than Apple Hill. The cookies were on the crispier side, good flavors. The pie.... Woo wee it was delicious. The crust was flaky without disintegrating as I sliced my fork through it. The berry mix was the right consistency, no runny mess, and without being toothache achingly sweet. The picnic area is where we sat and ate the cookies. Oops forgot to take pics. We sat under the massive thatched branch canopy. Before you leave, don't forget to check out the rose garden. It's a u-pick, $1 a stem. There are shears available to use. I picked a couple of roses, they bloomed for 5-6 days. My only gripe is the bathroom facility or lack of one. There is a porta toilet and outdoor wash station out in the parking lot under the oak tree. @hoovervilleorchards

Wow! This place is a little hidden but so glad I found it!! If you are looking for something to do or a place to visit and you are in the area, this is a must for adults or even families with kids! You will have a blast eating their amazing pies (I love the cherry pie) and their ice cream with berries! I can't say enough, this place is so so good! We got some ice cream with berries and a cherry pie, apple pie and some other fruits! We loved everything and the gentleman there was super helpful and friendly! I will definitely be stopping by often and having some more desserts and ice cream for sure! The ambiance is a lost treasure that when found you either want to keep to yourself or in my case tell everyone about it !

Best pies and service. The pies were not over sweet and crust flaky . We came in late and by accident overpaid $50 cash. The worker chased me down to my van and returned the overpayment. There's still good in this world. Definitely, will be coming back.

We must have Pie ! We happen to pass this magical place on our way to a friend's home. The vast array of pink Apple tree blossoms captured our attention. So naturally-we has to stop. It hosts blue ribbon fruit, and a plethora of delicious jams & jellies. Yummmm--Fresh baked pies and pastries. My fav: the Peach Blackberry Raspberry pie. Location: Hooverville Orchard is located just off highway 49 a few miles north of Placerville. Tip: arrive early if you want a selection! These pies go quick. Note: Cash preferred-but they do take CC.

If you've driven this stretch of highway 49, you may have noticed an intersection with a side road that has a big sign saying "Fresh Pies!" After driving past this sign many times, this weekend I finally gave into my curiosity and turned down that road. I am so glad I did! They have an incredible selection of pies (and jellies and jams too) all made from fruit they grew themselves. I bought an apple blackberry pie and was blown away at how delicious it tasted. If you like pies or you like fresh fruit, this place is 100% worth visiting. I will be back!

Granted this place is off the beaten path on Hwy 49 between Placerville and Cool but it's so worth going especially on a lovely autumn day. This is our second visit. Our first visit was with the granddaughters and then again last Saturday. I always want to refer to this place as Whoville. lol. I have family that will venture out here to pick peaches and will also pick up frozen pies for neighbors in the Bay Area. One of my niece's neighbors has her pick up frozen pies for her, she then bakes them, and gifts the pie away as something she made. Great idea and why not?! We picked up a frozen apple crumb pie, small blackberry pie, and jar of black cherry jam. We also purchased a slice of apple caramel pie ala mode and shared that in their picnic area. In total, we spent $52. The picnic area has a playground. When we took the grands we couldn't get them off the playground equipment to eat their ice cream. lol. This is a 50-year-old business. Everyone that we have come in contact with has been so nice. The pies are a bit pricey but don't you want quality? This is coming from someone buying pies from Costco. This is a year-round business so I will be back for my homemade pies for my neighbors. lol

American River Cherry Company was the perfect place to achieve all of the above. The drive from Reno to get to the farm was scenic. You drive through Lake Tahoe and the El Dorado National Forest, the same drive you would take to Apple Hill since they are basically in the same vicinity. If you're coming from Reno, you'll pass a beautiful waterfall just before you arrive that could be found right off the freeway on the left-Bridal Veil Falls, Pollock Pines. There's a pull over area where you can check it out up close. It flows year-round. Driving the streets to get to the farm was fun with winding roads covered by shade giving trees that lined the road. Upon entering the farm my eyes were caught by the beautiful "Homes & Garden" house blanketed with beautiful flowers, tall trees and freshly mowed green grass. You can find a hammock hung out in front- an ideal place for a nap. If you go down the hill to the left of the house, it will lead you to the pond where you will find the perfect picnic area, with a classic red picnic table & swing, lily pads floating, Koi fish down below, and dragon flies playing. My kids had fun running up and down the hills after picking fruit. After parking, we made our way to check in at the barn. Prior to arriving, I printed and filled out their liability waiver from their website to save time. At the barn, I loved that they took the time to supply sanitized pens so as to minimize the spread of germs. The workers (masked) were welcoming and gave us our buckets. As soon as we entered the farm, we were greeted with berries- berries to the left and berries to the right. The kids screamed with delight and set out to collect as many as they could. Further down you will find whimsical cherry trees creating a beautiful landscape. The available selections will depend on the temperature and pollinators so make sure to call ahead of time for more information. We went a couple of weeks after opening and found that lots of cherries had already been picked. I would suggest following them closely on their Facebook page to keep up with updates so you can catch them right when they open. The kids especially had fun collecting blueberries which were perfect in height and plentiful. I can't describe how special it is to be able to pick your own blueberries. There's no comparison with store bought berries. If you are travelling with little ones, it is especially helpful that you arrive early morning and early in the season to avoid hot temperatures. Just in case the little ones are only interested for a short while, you can find pre-picked selections at check in so you don't leave empty handed. At the end, we all had the time of our lives and decided to make cherry and berry picking at the American River Company a family tradition. Notes: *hand wash station available *Popsicles and honey for sale at check in *Berries are super fragile (esp. fresh picked) so if you can round up some clam shell containers from the store or Amazon, storing the berries in them would be the best way to transport and prevent damage *check out their website for varieties and prices *don't forget sunscreen, water, and hats *don't forget to check the weather to plan accordingly *If hungry, In-N-Out nearby *Boa Vista Orchards is a Apple Hill farm that is open year round if you're looking for goods-baked, packaged, frozen, fresh produce *They state that there is an entrance fee($5/person, 12yrs. and younger free) on their website but when we went, we were not charged. If charged, you may feel like you're not getting your money's worth, but I think the atmosphere and experience alone is worth the entrance fee and would gladly pay. *Koi fish feed available next to pond- bring quarters *Not too many parking spots in front of house so if lot fills up, park outside and walk up hill *keep cherries separate from berries due to the difference in price

We had a magical experience here, and the berries and cherries we picked were delicious! The family…read morewho runs the place is extremely friendly and helpful. Looking forward to making this a tradition.

It is a simpler, smaller, compact farmers market compared to Sacramento Downtown or Midtown. It had a nice variety of vendors. The Saturday I dropped by, they were selling produce, frozen fish, flowers, plants, nuts, baked goods, breads, kettle corn, artisan soap, honey, and jewelry. Some of the vendors were... Thao Ranch of Galt, CA: This small family run farm sells fresh produce. Some of the offerings were fresh dill, sweet snap peas, carrots, red onions, squash, leeks, beets, chard... some other items I can not remember off hand. The produce looked all so beautiful and were vibrantly colored. The carrots, beets, and onions still had their green tops on. Fresh. Plus they sold flowers. Beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers $12-15. Huge full gorgeous bouquets. Professional looking. Grateful Bread of Fair Oaks, CA: I was ecstatic to see their booth. I use to live near the bakery (an actual bakery where they made the goods right in the shop). I would drive or bike on over, my faves were the muesli bread and olive n feta cheese loaf. They have some of the best bread I have ever eaten... mmm. They were selling baguette (sourdough and French), cinnamon raisin bread, jalapeño n cheese bread, muesli bread, slider rolls, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, coffee cake, banana nut loaf, burger buns, ciabatta rolls, cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin) and a bunch more. These are all fresh made and not chuck full of preservatives like store shelf bread. I bought a bag of a dozen slider buns $5. Chick's Kettle Corn: Good stuff. Fresh made kettle corn straight from the kettle. He makes it earlier in the day and bags it. I bought a small bag $6. Nature's Nuts: The owner sources the nuts from Ripon and Modesto farms. I spoke to him for a bit. He is quite engaging and quite knowledgeable about nuts (nutritional value, storage, flavoring). No BSing. He sold walnuts, almonds, and pistachios in the shell sold unflavored or flavored. I bought a bag of 8 oz honey smoked almonds. Yum! I was able to sample. The walnuts were so fresh and had an excellent sweet earthy taste. Pat's Pastries: Home based business selling baked goods. Irish soda bread, whole grain bread, chive n cheese biscuits, zucchini pineapple bread, pumpkin ginger bread, gluten free pound cake and zucchini bread... were just some of her offerings. Malik Brothers: They sell various flavors of papadum, chips, rotis, and naan. Each come in a variety of flavors. Roti is a flatbread, made from stoneground whole wheat, originating from India. Ruby's Ranch: They are a farmstead selling all organic produce. Their booth sold a variety of lettuce. It looked all so fresh and vibrant.
