We're doing take out once a week to support local restaurants. Just picked up an order wanting to support our favorite sushi place. Sushi, tonkatsu, salad, soup...everything great EXCEPT the beef teriyaki. Not sure what the meat is that they are using now, but it was paper thin, over cooked, and full of gristle to the point of being inedible and had to be pitched. Don't eat here anywhere close to closing time unless you want to have an incredibly uncomfortable dinner. They close at 9 but by the time 8:30 rolled around we were the only ones left in the restaurant and the staff made us very aware of that. We felt incredibly rushed to finish and get the hell out of there because of how uncomfortable they made us feel for being in there close to closing time. At 9:00 on the dot they shut the music off in the middle of our meal. As someone who works in the service industry I was SHOCKED that they would turn the music off while there was still customers present. At that point it was so silent and awkward and we felt so uncomfortable that we didn't even finish eating we just asked for to go boxes since they shut off the music and we had the staff looking at us every 5 seconds. Honestly it was just rude. As someone who works in a restaurant myself, you just expect that people will come in before you close and you will not be getting off right when the restaurant closes, that's just the reality of working in a restaurant. Shooing customers away so you can get off 10 minutes earlier is very unprofessional and just all around bad for business. I've never experienced anything like it. It's honestly a shame because I have been here before and I really enjoyed the food. I would have been a repeat customer but this experience really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Let's just say that Hooked On Sushi has ruined all other sushi restaurants for me. Their selection is incredible, their pricing is awesome, and their quality is top-notch. We went to the newly opened location in Encinitas and the experience was amazing (even better than we have ever had at the original joint-which is hard to top). Here's why: 1) As soon as we walked in the entire staff greeted us like we were regulars - I hope they never stop doing this because the energy was awesome, 2) The decor is really fun and interesting, and even though it is a small space, the way they set everything up makes the restaurant feel large and roomy, 3) Service was really quick... It wasn't too crowded, but there was a huge family sitting in the middle of the restaurant that would have been a pain to serve and we still received our meal within 7 minutes (yes, I timed it - I never generally do that, but I was curious), 4) The rolls were delicious. Hooked On never fails to satisfy for me in this area so I won't go into too much detail, and 5) Every server that came to our table was super friendly and genuinely interested in making us happy! I'm hooked! Yes, I know that's cliché, but this place is fantastic. Amazing rolls, great noodle options for my daughter, AND did I mention amazing jalapeño poppers! They are absolutely excellent. My favorite rolls are the Hooked On Sushi roll, the Redline is great - they're all good and creative. The service is top notch and friendly and since we've dined their three times in the first couple weeks they have been open - they know us by name. Five stars. read more
