When I came in, there were no other tables except for my friend but I was greeted warmly upon arrival. I found my friend and joined her. She had ordered a plate full of sashimi. I was craving Hamachi so I just ordered a hand roll. It was flavorful and the fish tasted fresh. My friend enjoyed her sushi as well. Our waters were kept filled, and our server was very attentive. We were just a little bit too early for happy hour, but it looks like they have some good deals and I would definitely come back and try other things. read more

I really wanted to like Sapporo, as I've been trying to find an alternative to the excellent sushi spot in La Costa Town Square (no affiliation). I came in for lunch and ordered the "B" special, which includes 4 pieces of chef's choice nigiri and 5 pieces of sashimi, along with two gyoza, salad, and miso soup. Positives: * The salmon and tuna quality were very good * Service was friendly Negatives: * Despite the apparent freshness, several pieces of fish were cut with noticeable connective tissue (white fibrous strands), which made the sushi and sashimi unpleasant to eat * The spicy tuna roll was extremely spicy, far beyond typical sriracha or similar, to the point it was hard to finish * The salad dressing (looked like a Thousand Island style) was also unexpectedly spicy and heavily coated the lettuce * The albacore quality was not great and also had connective tissue * The ambiance was loud and not very relaxing * Seating felt oddly high and uncomfortable * Prices felt steep for what was served (around $50 for sushi/sashimi lunch options; the mixed "B" special was $26) * The soy sauce dish was very small and made it difficult to dip the nigiri properly Overall, a disappointing experience given the price point. Sapporo Sushi has been on my radar ever since moving into the area. Whenever I used to drive through San Elijo Hills when they had started construction of this town, I always got excited thinking about what new spots were going to be popping up nearby. And it took a few years to go through all of the sushi bars a bit closer to home, but my son and I finally managed to circle out here for dinner. We started with the Takoyaki. They had a great color to them, and an excellent fry to the batter. The interiors were warm, gooey, and pretty tasty when paired with the sweet and salty toppings. Not the best version of this appetizer, but still very good. Next up, the Salmon Nigiri. A good sized cut, gorgeous color, nice sheen on the fish after serving, and with a fatty and lightly sweet flavor. Again, not the best (I would have preferred some fresh wasabi and a slightly thicker and square cut to the fish), but still a very good rendition of this dish. As for the rolls, we had a Shogun roll, which was fine, but forgettable. And a Hawaiian Roll, which was the only major disappointment on the table. The char on the jalapeños gave the entire roll an overwhelming smoky flavor that covered up all other flavors in what should have been a very complex and flavorful roll. The real star of the day, though, was the STSW. A beautifully crafted and delicious dish that is pretty unique to Sapporo. While the ingredients themselves are fairly standard in many a roll, the technique and plating of this sandwich style dish was top notch and a great addition to our dinner. In the end, my son and I had a great time here at Sapporo Sushi. Our food was good for the most part and the restaurant itself was clean and nice to sit down at. I'm not sure if we'll be able to come out here regularly, but it's definitely worth a try even for those outside of San Elijo. read more

I was really in the mood for some sushi, and this place really let me down. This is a chain so maybe that's where I went wrong? Sometimes you luck out and sometimes you don't, I guess. I visited on a Friday before dinner rush, so I was seated really quickly which was nice. Happy Hour is only M-T just fyi. Their menu stated they had snapper so imagine my disappointment when they say they don't have it. Strike 1. They show a delicious unfiltered sake on their menu. They also don't have it. Strike 2. My table orders a plethora of things off their menu: samurai jack roll, spicy tuna roll, yellowtail, salmon, eel. All the good stuff. It wasn't bad, but it was not that great either. It could have been fresher, and the spicy tuna roll could have been- I don't know- spicy? The wasabi was also not spicy at all. Strike 3. Our server was really nice, and she was doing her best, but she couldn't tell us what kind of sake she had available and so we ended up with a peach sake. Not bad but not what we wanted. I was craving sushi, and decided to give this place a try. Parking was pretty easy as I found a spot right in front. I was here during lunch on a Monday, so that may have helped. The staff were welcoming which is always appreciated. I really liked that one of their lunch special options let you choose 3 half speciality rolls. Which was different and provided a unique way to sample a variety....plus it came with miso, a salad and wontons. I tried the amigo, Hawaiian, and yellow yolo rolls. My favorite was the yellow yolo, it had spice level that I was looking for. The other 2 were just ok. Wasn't a big fan of the salad due to the dressing they put on it, and the wonton had meat so didn't try that either. Overall, decent lunch spot if you're in the area. read more

I've been to Sapporo on a handful of occasions. Every time I'm here, I'm always impressed with the service and quality of food. We sat outside on the patio enjoying the summer breeze through the trees. Our server was helpful and accommodating despite the busy evening and new server training that night. We ordered beverages, some appetizers, and a couple rolls right away. Some of us needed a few minutes to decide what rolls we wanted to eat. I tried the Steeler Roll which was really tasty. Crab, shrimp tempura, avo inside and salmon, lemon, and some dressing on top. Next time I will get the dressing on the side, it was good but the bottom of the roll absorbed the dressing and was a little too much for me. The hamachi nigiri was really tasty. I love the chopped green onion or chives that they add as a garnish. Looking forward to my next visit. Will it be take out or dine in? read more

The guys working are great: friendly, attentive and polite. I eaten here multiple times and prefer the patio. The interior's light are those bright white led lights with a blue hue. IMO they need to choose lights lower on the pk scale to the warmer yellowish range. The fish on the nigiri and rolls were fine. I told my wife who's from a largely hometown nowhere near the ocean with almost a completely Caucasian population that it was the type of sushi I'd expect to get in her hometown meaning many of the flavors seem untraditional: too sweet and too many sauces. This is a very attractive restaurant with both indoor and patio seating. The menu is looooong. You will have a lot of options. There are plenty of sushi and non-sushi choices. For a starter, the garlic edamame is terrific. It has a ton of garlic flavor. We tried the "hot plates" which give you a lot of meat on a very hot sizzling platter (like a fajita platter, in fact). The hot platters come with sushi, rice, and salad on the side. You also receive a nice cup of miso soup. I went with the spicy pork plate but also sampled the chicken plate and the shrimp plate. All of the food was very good and you get a lot of it. You will not leave hungry, I assure you. I think I liked the shrimp plate the best. The shrimp were big and very flavorful. Service was terrific. All of the restaurant's employees were engaging and friendly. I will need to return to try more of the sushi. They offer numerous different sushi rolls, many of which are very creative, and the ones we saw looked beautiful. read more

What the heck did i get myself into! Was craving sushi at 815pm on a monday night in north county. Place was stone cold empty. Felt awkward eating there but they were accommodating. They were definitely fixing to close but i went for it. Sat at the bar. Service felt rushed but i did appreciate them being open, so i thought. Menu: Overwhelming and three miles long. Its overkill. Drinks: ordered Asahi on draft. Not available. Opted for Sapporo on draft. My friend got red wine. Ordered: 6 pieces total of nigiri(tuna, yellowtail and salmon) 3 FIVE piece sashimi of Albacore/Tuna/salmon. The nigiri was edible. Not great. Not bad. The quality of fish was average at best. The salmon sashimi was very good. Large pieces. The albacore and tuna sashimi were terrible. Left over half of it. Horrendous texture and taste on both. My date agreed. Both were cold temperature thank god. The Maguro sashimi tasted salty. The sushi pieces were too large. I think the chef used a hatchet to slice it. Come on! I feel i could have used a knife to cut into it. I eat at very high end sushi restaurants around SD and this is not one of them. I will not be back. Prices: From outer space. A disgrace. As a first time customer, I was curious to see what kind of service and quality sushi I would find here. I came early, practically when they opened on a Tuesday morning. Chill music was playing in the background and the weather was lovely so I opted for outside seating. I ordered the STSW roll/sandwich. I think after my first couple of bites I told the staff, "I feel like I'm in heaven right now." Yes, sushi heaven!! That sushi Sando is amazing. Everything I could want in a sushi roll, but better. I moved to San Elijo in January, and Sapporo Sushi quickly became one of the first local gems I truly connected with. I've already been here three times, and every visit just reaffirms why I'll keep coming back. The sushi is incredible--always fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. I tend to go overboard and order 5-10 rolls to share with my family, and the staff never judge--just smile and serve everything with warmth and grace. Everyone is consistently kind, attentive, and welcoming. One thing I deeply appreciate is the ambiance. The interior design is stunning--the layout is open and elegant, the furniture is comfortable, and the flow of the space just works. From the moment I walk in, I find myself smiling because the environment is so thoughtfully done. There's a decor piece just to the right of the front door that adds a unique charm from the outside too. Special shoutout to Dustin, who went out of his way to save 16 empty wine, sake, and beer bottles for me. My husband and I ordered several sushi rolls since we were celebrating his birthday. I don't remember the name of all the rolls we got but the ones I remember are the Lakers, Jessica Albacore, and the protein roll. The size of the rolls, the flavors, and the rice to fish ratio was perfect! If you aren't feeling for sushi they have those combo plates that I mentioned. I really like the sushi and the variety on the menu but unfortunately Sapporo lacks in ambience. It is way too cold and bright inside this place at night. Not warm or cozy at all. Also, the tables and TVs are situated in a very odd way to where it feel kind of like eating in a cafeteria. I would elect to go with either the sophisticated hipster restaurant vibe or the sports bar look. Trying to combine the two doesn't work very well. The sushi was good, and the pork katsu donburi was a great comfort food. We dined there around 12:15 pm on a Saturday, and the server told us that they were already serving the dinner menu. We used to really like Sapporo Sushi in San Marcos, but our most recent visit completely changed our opinion. They recently rolled out a new menu, and it seems like prices have gone up quite a bit. One of the main reasons we used to come here was because it was reasonably priced with pretty good food. Now it feels like they're trying to push higher prices without a clear improvement in quality. The most frustrating part was ordering. We tried to get one of their specials -- any two "special rolls." Naturally, we picked two rolls from their roll menu, but were told we could only choose from rolls marked as "lunch special"... even though we were there during dinner. That wasn't clearly stated on the menu, and the lunch options were very limited, which made the deal feel misleading. On top of that, the food itself was disappointing. The roll I ended up ordering completely fell apart when I tried to pick it up. It was drenched in eel sauce, and the crab inside was just a mushy mix of imitation crab and mayo. Definitely not what we expected. Overall, the experience just felt off compared to how it used to be. Between the higher prices, confusing menu restrictions, and drop in quality, it's hard to justify coming back. We probably won't return unless things change, and I wouldn't be surprised if others start feeling the same way. read more

One of the Best sushi and sashimi presentations. Prices are high but I'll say it was all very fresh and artistically presented. Loved the large steel cans of Sapporo (hard to find these days in restaurants) and dining on the deck with privacy nook tables was extra pleasing. The sushi/sashimi combo was a great option and if you haven't tried the giant scallop sushi before this was a good place to experience it. Soft like butter! Point of observation though.... We had considered also getting a bowl of ramen but found they weren't being served anymore. Reason given was the owners are Korean and their recipe was apparently too spicy for the clientele. We ordered the Fuji roll, Rainbolw roll, chicken Teri lunch box and chicken katsu curry. The service was great and the food was good. Overall, I give it 4.5 but there are no half stars, so I will round up. The only thing I didn't care for was the pickled imitation crab meat but everything else was great.
