Choose wisely, grasshopper. While sunshine is free, solar PV systems are not and there are over 2700 companies in California, with varying levels of solar technology, trying to win your business. After quite a bit of research, I'm happy to say that SunPower® by Hooked on Solar in Auburn, CA, was a great choice for my family.
Hooked on Solar offered us awesome solar panels with more power per square inch than other brands, micro-inverters and a 25 year warranty. They really do seem to have 'smarter solar'. We began with Justin, who provided great information about Sunpower, their technology and Hooked on Solar's stellar reputation. When we decided to work with them, he was quick to start the process with the contract, building permit requirements (which they obtained) and electric company forms. As the project moved along, we worked with Nick, who came to measure the roof and answered more of our questions and then with Alex, who was extremely helpful and sensitive to our time frame. Anthony was the leader of the exceptionally professional group that installed our system. They did an excellent job, which took less than a whole day. Later, Joe installed the consumption monitor, which tells us how much energy we both use and generate. Our system is working flawlessly and we are very happy and pleased.
Under lessons learned, I would mention that we did not initially understand the time frame, which can sometimes stretch to three months, required to get the design and permits in place before the install. If that had been clearer during our first visit, it would have helped us to better manage expectations. From some reviews, I expected that we would just talk to Justin for the entire project, but that was not how it worked. We started with the sales team and then were handed off to others who are experts in their part of the process. They all did a great job, but sometimes we weren't sure who to call. Again, telling us about that process at the beginning would have been helpful. Finally, the only real issue we had with the install was that our new attic insulation was compressed by the electrician. I don't know how this could have been avoided, as he needs to move around in the attic to install the wiring. The insulation company had advised that the electrician could gently sweep the fiberglass out of the way, and then sweep it back into place as he left, but that was not a reasonable option. I would advise people considering solar to get it installed before the attic insulation, to avoid an extra expense.
With the project complete, we are very happy with our sleek solar panels generating electricity during this hot, sunny summer. I would highly recommend SunPower® by Hooked on Solar. We look forward to a good 25 year relationship with them, along with our much, much lower electricity bills. read more
