I studied a lot and focused on REC Alpha 365AA panels system and worked with 5 REC installers, but other REC installers will only use IQ7+ microinverter. IQ7+ is rated at 290w / 290VA continuous power output, will have significant clipping, when paired with high power panels, to effectively lower system production. I contracted Ilum solar to expand an existing solar photovoltaic system on my San Jose home's roof. I chose to buy the parts on my own and contract Ilum for installation and permitting. I added 11.22 kW DC of capacity to the existing 9.46kW DC, all using Enphase micro-inverters. This also necessitated changing my 200amp main breaker panel to a PVL model. Robert was easy to work with, responsive, and provided very reasonable quotes. The panels were installed in early October 2022, within 60 days of my initial contact with Robert. It took somewhat longer to get the PVL panel due to parts shortages. In the meantime, we lived with a 150A main breaker. Everything was done to my great satisfaction and with permits, and the upgraded system qualifies for NEM2. read more

I reached out to Ilum and Robert Dean got back to me in a matter of minutes. I'd consider myself someone who has enough knowledge to be dangerous when it comes to solar... I have had many companies quote me a system setup over the years. Additionally, I had been doing copious research on DIY and wholesale kits, as I couldn't fathom paying the typical high markup that most of the big name solar companies charge for on the system array let alone the install. Not only did Robert answer all of my questions about building an array (pros and cons of certain manufacturers, inverter vs. micro-inverters, installation time-frames, etc.), he also had a great referral who was competitive in their offering for a specific array setup I was looking for. I had a 6.9 KW system delivered to my house in no time (Robert even offered to have it delivered to their warehouse in case I didn't want it to take up space in the garage - talk about great service!). Fast, crazy guarantee, and after the sale service. I went through EnergySage to find a solar installer and received several quotes for solar and storage. I received a call from Tyler at Ilum the day I was I was going to contract with another installer. Tyler gave me his personal contact information and after several discussions with him, he made two promises that made going with Ilum a no-brainer. First, he guaranteed they could install the full system with battery and have it pass inspection before the Dec 31st cut off for the Federal tax incentives. It was already November. Second, he guaranteed that if my production did not meet their estimates in year one, they would come back and install panels on their dime until the system did. I signed the contract with Ilum and they had people on my roof, installing panels THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY. I couldn't believe it. The installers were extremely courteous... So much that I bought them pizza the first day and allowed them to work in the garage without anyone home the last several days. They had the install done in a little over a week and the city inspection completed two weeks later - WELL BEFORE the Dec 31 tax credit cut-off. This is something three other installers I talked to said couldn't be done based on the permitting process alone. After the install, there were some issues that mostly revolved around the battery setup. They explained most of their installs did not include storage and the installer missed a few configuration steps.. Each and every time I called them, they made fixing my issue a "right now" priority - even on Saturday. After the third issue, (improper reading in the app for generation), the company's co-founder gave me a call, asked some questions and then drove two hours from his location to personally look at and fix the issue. He then personally followed up a few times over the next couple weeks to make sure everything was working and configured how I wanted (e.g. cost cutting charging and discharge settings based on PGE ToU rates). 1\ The three people I spoke with during this time gave me their personal phone numbers and were extremely responsive via voice and text when I had questions or thought I had an issue. 2\ Even though I contracted with them in November, they still met their end of year deadline, something every other installer said wasn't possible. 3\ Though there were issues, everyone was eager to fix them as if it were their own home. 4\ As a bonus, they were able to compete with other quotes and used a better panel (Sun Power 360w X-Series) than my other quotes that also included Sunpower but a different lower series and wattage panel. All in all, I was happy with Ilum and would recommend them. If I could leave no stars I would. In a nut shell it. I signed in august of 2022 for solar. As soon as they got the money they were on top of getting it built. Then the issues.. paint didnt match the house. Panels were warped and no uniform on the house. One panel completely didnt work. Then I was told when they come to inspect they will fix my issues. Nope. Guy simply came and left paperwork for the inspector. This drug on for months. After failing inspection due to my patio. It was delayed and month or so till I could take care of that. I then called 5 minutes after my patio permit passed for them to come back out. This puts us in around March 2023 now. Finally passed inspection but I still had a panel not working. I was promised reimbursement for all the time lost and for still paying a power bill plus now a solar bill. They replaced the panel but still it didnt work. Then they said oh its a bad inverter. Weeks pass with nothing. Finally outta the ckear blue they fix it. I was still promised free bird netting. Weeks pass again. I had to leave a bad review which now I see was removed from their website. That review got them moving. Finally got the bird netting with in 4 days of a bad review. Still promised reimbursement for all this. Now here we are July 2023. Still no sign of reimbursement. Dont use this company. They are horrible. Will tell you everything you wanna hear to shut you up but never deliver read more

I highly recommend this company if you're going solar. The costs are very upfront with no surprises. The documentation process is simple and handled by their department. The installation is painless. And the panels are of a much better quality than what Tesla will sell you. I believe the customer service is really great. With a project like this that includes permits and contracts with PG&E, there are bound to be some hiccups, but this company overcame snags with little effort on my part, albeit with a handful of delays that I suppose can't be helped. We liked the sales pitch in October and scheduled for install right away. The roofer and crew were awesome, they completed the installation quickly in November. Our Solar, however, was not turned on until February. Communication was lacking from our sales rep as we were waiting on the city to approve the solar. We are leasing, so our payments started in January but our sales rep did not contact the electric company. We ended up paying for the lease and our regular electric bill because she forgot to set it up. We also never received our free gifts of a RING doorbell and VISA giftcard. read more

Last minute preparations were being made. The roofer was ready to meet with Illum on-site on Monday; Ilum confirmed they would be there. Then suddenly, THE DAY BEFORE the project was to begin -- which was four months after the contracts were signed -- Robert from Illum writes, "I regret to inform you that, I am unable to perform the work we had planned." This left me and the roofing guy totally in a lurch, with no time to adjust. (The roofer needed the solar company there to install stanchions / standoffs for the solar panels, which they would then roof around.) I asked if they could at least meet their commitment to do that part. No dice, only "Unfortunately we will not be able to be the Installer for your project. A lot has changed internally with my company since we originally talked in January." No effort was made to assist in any transition, or to find another solar company, or to make consolations for the broken contract, nada. This wasn't even the first hint at problems with this provider. This project was scheduled four months prior. Yet in that time no plans were drawn up, no permits acquired. Even if they weren't MIA, the project would have been delayed for no reason. So, take all the quotes above and reverse them to get a pretty good idea of what our experience was like with Ilum Solar. Seeing how easily this company reneges on major commitments, I would advise you to take your solar business elsewhere. read more

I recently had Ilum Solar add 3.8 kW of solar panels to our roof, complementing the 4.8 kW system we had installed by a different company 12 years ago. In addition, we wanted a home battery system installed. Ilum recommended the Sonnen battery and we went with the Eco10 product. Bottom line: Ilum did a great job. They did the work very quickly and very professionally. They communicated with us regularly before, during, and after completion of the work. The solar panels had a problem a few days after installation due to heavy rains. Ilum dispatched someone the day after I called to fix the problem, and they assured us it will not happen again. We've had a number of questions about how to optimize the settings on our Sonnen battery, and Ilum has been very helpful in getting the questions answered. I have been interested in purchasing solar for my house, mainly to help the environment. My electric usage is very low, so going solar is not the best financial decision based on the usual estimate received from solar companies. Ilum Solar was one of a very few companies that were willing to provide an estimate for my initial request for a 1 kw solar system. Most responded with very high estimates and the suggestion not to go solar if I only needed such a small system. Ilum provided the only reasonable estimate. I received the estimate from Tyler on Yelp and got to work with him throughout the process.
