This place has been a definite go-to especially during Lent (I still go regularly during the rest of the year though). With the nicer weather I'd recommend sitting outside to people watch. Usually I'll get either the fried catfish or fried shrimp platters but recently I tried the fried oyster po'boy. It is definitely one of my new favorite items on their menu. I also really like their fried pickles! They regularly have a catfish and shrimp platter as their daily special (1 catfish plank and 2 fried shrimp with a generous portion of steak fries). I've never left this place without being thoroughly full. read more

Hoochies is a great seafood/Cajun place in Denton. The menu is small but that just means they have perfected the items they make. The seafood gumbo was good as well as the half plate of fried shrimp that I ordered. I wasn't a big fan of the jalapeño cornbread, but overall it was a great meal! Tasty but all the fish comes frozen. $15 for a tiny piece of fish that was frozen before hand is not the best deal.

5 of us in our party, and not one of us liked it. Everything including the fries (because how can you mess up fries) was nasty. We couldn't make out what the hush puppy tasted like because it definitely wasn't like any other hush puppy we have tasted. It was so disappointing. The catfish was super soggy. Not a single corner was crunchy. Not to mention the awful fishy taste. The boiled shrimp was overpriced and had absolutely no flavor. At least the music was good, but that's about it. This place made me not ever want to try another seafood place that's not in Louisiana or close to a place with fresh seafood. As said in previous reviews, super friendly and nice staff but the food was meh. We had a fried catfish po'boy and sampler with fried catfish and shrimp. I'm not sure if it was the breading on the catfish or the catfish but both in the sandwich and platter was bland and it tasted kinda like dirt or dust. Had to cover it with hot sauce. I think they used a different batter or breading for the shrimp, they were great as were the fries. read more

I haven't eaten oysters on the half shell in 4 years....pandemic, then the inflation...so tonight I went to Hoochies and got a dozen. Price was $33. They were pretty oysters and they were presented correctly. However, zero flavor. It's possible they were rinsed after being opened, which washes away all of the brinyness and the oyster flavor itself. Disappointed. The seafood gumbo was good. Went to Hoochies for the first time and really enjoyed the ambiance. There is outside seating available and my husband and I sat at the outdoor bar seating. I got the friend shrimp basket, which came with about 10 shrimp, 2 hush puppies and steak fries. Husband got the crawfish, and the catfish basket. Everything was great! And for a decent price. All that plus a soft drink and a beer for $45. read more

Shoutout to Julia and crew!!! Julia was friendly and welcoming as she greeted us and took our order. You order up front and then it is brought to your table. There was so much to choice from, but she let me take my time. I saw the po'boys and I knew that I wanted that to be my introduction to Hoochies! And my fellow Yelpers convinced me to get order of hush puppies!! I looove hush puppies so that was a delicious suggestion. Hubby ordered the fried oysters and a bowl of gumbo. Their sweet tea was perfectly crisp and refreshing! The gumbo was well balanced and savory!! What a great way to get your veggies!!! Chunks of okra swimming in a broth worth dunking bread into!!! My shrimp po'boy was everything I wanted!!! Huge shrimp, crisp shredded lettuce, ripe tomato slices, onions, and sauce. Tartar sauce is one of my favorite seafood dips and I was loving it waits every bite. Grant it that this is a big bite of sandwich so it did get a bit messy and the shrimps try to pop out, but challenge accepted!!! These giant fries were crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside! One of the best steak fries I've had in a long time! Addictive! A great lunch date with my bestie!!! I've been meaning to try this place for a while. I got lucky on Wednesday afternoon, there was a spot open right in front! This isn't always easy to find on Industrial, but it was an off peak time, around 4pm. Parking can be scarce in this area, and this was one of two spots open on Industrial, at the time. However, two blocks away on Oak is a free parking lot and it's a reasonable walk. You can hear the music from the street and when you enter, the place is pretty big. There was bar seating and lots of tables. You order at the counter and the menu was large and easy to read. It's not super detailed, as it says combos available, but you have to ask the cashier for details. While waiting I saw that the tables had slightly more detailed menus that also list out their daily specials, which looked like a really good deal. They also have Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 4-6pm. I ordered a combo plate which was shrimp and catfish with steak fries and hush puppies for $15.10 including tax. I wouldn't describe the gentleman who took my order as friendly exactly, but he answered my questions, which is helpful enough. When he called my name to get my order he told me they had added in cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, lemon etc. which was both useful and thoughtful, since I didn't think to ask for any. Though I thought the price of the combo was kind of high, I can't complain about the portions. It was a huge amount of food and two people can easily split this. If you aren't going to split the order or be able to take the leftovers home, I would suggest going with a po'boy (which I was really close to ordering, but couldn't decide what I wanted on it, lol). I was struck by the fact that the exact same breading was used on the catfish, the shrimp and the hush puppies. I wasn't expecting that and it seemed a little one note overall. The breading was suited to the catfish and the catfish was really good, much better than I expected, even from the stellar reputation of this place. I really enjoyed their tartar sauce, very good and nicely balanced. I didn't feel the breading was as suited to the shrimp, but I guess I was expecting fried shrimp with a crispy breading. The shrimp itself was large and tasted fresh, and there were quite a few in there. Can't complain, they were pretty good. The steak fries were a huge portion and were pretty decent with crispy edges. A lot went to waste though, I can't think of a time when you need that many steak fries in one place at one time. :) They only served two hush puppies, which seems like too little, but only because there was so much of everything else. They were not the fried, crispy hush puppies I expect when being served hush puppies. They were square and on the softer side. However, I enjoyed them because they tasted like cornbread- really good cornbread! It might be nice if they served half as many fries and twice as many hush puppies, but just a wish list item, not something that would keep me from ordering it again. I think this is a great choice to satisfy a seafood craving. I look forward to stopping in again as there are many things I still want to try- oysters, a po'boy, maybe some tacos and there were plenty of sides to choose from. This review is based off one visit, but they seem like a solid choice in the area, with a good atmosphere. Came to this place for the first time today. Came on a Sunday after church. Service was friendly and I did not have to wait long. Orders are placed at the counter and brought out to your table once they are ready. There is no server at the door it is a seat yourself environment. Prices were moderate but in my opinion the portions are small. Actually it's the size of the shrimp that are small. You do get a ton of fries which serves as filler in the basket. One word describes the food here and that word Is FRESH!!! I have eaten lots of seafood in my lifetime and I have not had seafood this fresh since California and Miami. Not only was the food fresh, it was Hot and well seasoned. I was really surprised by the quality of the food. I have heard it was good, but I just expected to get fried seafood, but it was definitely more than that. I couldn't decide if I wanted the shrimp or catfish basket, so I asked if I could do a combination and that option was available for $14.99. The combination came with 2 huge Filets of catfish, a good amount of shrimp, fries and hush puppies. WARNING: The fish is very hot, so save your tongue some pain by eating a few fries or whatever else you ordered until it cools down a bit. I joked with my hubby and said the fish was so fresh that they had to have a catfish pond in the back and that the fish was still floating when we placed the order, lol. Everything was seasoned well. The only negative about this meal were the hush puppies. I have never seen them in square form, but they were cute and I was excited to give them a try. I was disappointed at first bite. They were so stale. It was as if they had them left over from the previous day and just refried them. Glad I decided to stop in. I got a Po' Boy and Crawfish, the lady at the counter is new and messed up my order on the Po' Boy (I only got grilled shrimp and fries). I told the cook and he quickly remade my order and added a pound of crawfish to my order because it was cheaper to get fried shrimp than grilled shrimp. The food was amazing! Reminds me of being in NOLA, definitely better than The Catch. The customer service from the cook is top notch. I will definitely be coming here again. read more

I haven't done a review on Yelp in a while, but this is the perfect restaurant to get it back up and going! I started going to Hoochies in early 2017, and that 1st visit was the game changer! Now I don't remember what I got the first time, but my last visit and really all of them have been extraordinary. I went to Hoochies last Thursday, and every Tuesday and Thursday's are $2 Fish tacos. My friend got the tacos, and I got the Buffalo Chicken tenders. The tenders came with fries and 2 hush puppies! It was a causal lunch crowd, so there were many tables to choose from. We decided to sit at the bar area. Everything was very clean. It took an average amount of time for the food to come out, and they were very friendly while serving us and getting us refills. My friend ate the Fish tacos in a record amount of time because they were THAT GOOD! The Buffalo Tenders were also very good. Overall every experience has been amazing, so this deserves a 5! read more

Craving oysters and dined at Hoochie's this weekend based off of reviews, wish we wouldn't have. While the food was good taste wise, they should not charge $22.95 for roasted oysters that are all smaller than my thumb nail. Mind you my ring size is a 4.5 so these were extremely tiny oysters! I've actually never been served oysters this small before... and no, it wasn't due to them being roasted. The oyster shells them selves were about the size of a quarter to a half dollar, oysters were all about the size of a dime to a nickel. It came with 7. Their 1/2 a dozen raw were $12.95 so I basically paid $10 dollars for one extra dime-sized oyster, butter, garlic, and parmesan ! Every oyster was that small too! In the picture I cut the sliced bread into 1/4s and the oyster was still smaller than 1/4 of 1 piece of tiny bread. It was a French loaf cut in half and 7 small pieces of halved overly toasted bread. Nothing else came with it so I left about as hungry as when I arrived. My boyfriend's food was good, nothing was great though. Service was just ok. Lots of flies everywhere which is gross. I'll say the tea and citric rice were both good though as a positive note to end on. read more

I don't get the hype. The best part of this place is its canned beer selection. The food is okay - but nothing was outstanding. In our group of 4, everyone felt like their food was fine, but no one was particularly excited about it. The menu is VERY limited - only one kind of grilled fish (the fish of the day, which isn't named on any of the multiple chalkboards in the place), not very many sides choices. The hush puppies are probably the worst I've ever had - they're cubes of dense and flavorless breading. Why are they cubes? The cornbread is (for us) inedible because it's so full of jalapenos, which would be fine, except it's just on the menu as cornbread with no mention of it being spicy. That was an unpleasant surprise and a waste of money. It's a cool spot, but the service isn't great. Three of us got our food and waited several minutes before I had to chase someone down to ask about the last order, to which the waitress said she was sure it was coming out next? No apology or explanation. Two other orders left the kitchen before our 4th person got his food. Again - it was delivered without a word. It's fine if it you happen to be looking for exactly what they're serving, but I'm not sure we'll ever go back. read more

Stopped in here after a walk around the square. Really good food, generous portions, a good bit of seating inside and out. Most of the inside tables and all those outside are bench style - think picnic tables with unattached benches. Didn't seem the staff kept the condiments, salt and pepper properly set but there are extras available inside so you can pick them up. There are maybe 6-8 tables outside seating 4 each. Portions are generous and reasonably priced. We had a side order of hush puppies and got a pile of nicely fried, tender pups. They aren't crispy but I suspect you could ask that they be forgotten in the fryer a while. We also tacos that are available as fish, shrimp, crab and a couple other options. Again the portions are generous and each taco has two tortillas and there's enough filling to make the extra. You get two tacos and you can mix and match the proteins - I got a fish and shrimp. We also had the grilled fish of the day which on our visit was haddock. Cole slaw and seasoned rice were the sides. Again, good size portion and well seasoned. Service was quick and food was the proper temp. I couldn't give 5 stars because they have two menus. A paper one at the tables and in a bucket as you enter, then a board above the order counter. Several items are $1 - $2 less on the paper menu, so the first menu you see, than on the board above the counter. I mentioned it to them and they were aware. There seems to be a wide range of experiences, from terrible to awesome. I cant speak for everything on their menu, nor when they are super busy, but I enjoyed what I had. I ordered an oyster poboy, as well as a basket of fried jalapenos. the order took a reasonable amount of time to come out. I was sitting outside with a group of friends, and none of us were neglected for water refills. The fried jalapenos were actually somewhat spicy, but not unbearable. They are pickled, but they pack some spice. The oyster poboy was a nice size for a great price. The oyster was moist but cooked just right in a firm texture. The bread was buttery yet firm like it should be. The veggies were basic but satisfying. The fries were nothing special but if you like them thick then they are decent. I tried some of my friend's shrimp kid basket and was surprised by how much they give. The breading was a good proportion and the meat was juicy. I didnt think this place would be anything special, but it actually did take me by surprise. The price is really the selling point of this place, as I couldnt get the same proportions or flavor at Frillys or Dannie Rae. Loved the staff more than the food, which was amazing! Some of the best crawfish, crab and shrimp I've ever had! We ordered the Hoochie's platter for 2 and 2 lbs of crawfish, and it came with plenty!
