Last time I went food was cold smaller servings than before 2020.& prices went up quite a bit

We have been here a few times recently. There hasn't been a long wait to be seated but sometimes it takes a while to get your drinks and appetizers. Their salsa is ok, the spice level varies. On my last visit it was pretty good but the previous time I thought it was too mild. Their chips are ok but they are a little stingy, on each visit they have only given one bowl of tortilla chips to share and they haven't been on top of it when you run out. Some of the dishes I like: Queso blanco appetizer is good, even better when you ask for brisket. Quesa Birria Tacos, they aren't bad but there are better places to get good tacos IMO. Carne Asada & Enchilidas - quite good and comes with tortillas. I got the corn tortillas and it was good. Their grilled jalapeno is HOT! The enchilidas also has a sauce that is quite spicy but good. Sopapillas - ok but many other Mexican restaurants have better sopapillas. Milpa's is one of the better Mexican restaurants in Denton, I would rate them 3.5 stars. They aren't bad but not quite a 4 star IMO yet. read more

The staff and management here have been very busy indeed! New brunch menu, upgrades and renovations inside. One side of the restaurant is for Milpa. The other side is for Pepitas, their vegan half of the restaurant. Yesterday morning, we got together for brunch - after having been vaccinated so felt a modicum of safety. The staff were all masked up and wearing gloves as they dispensed chips and salsa along the table. The red salsa is pretty mild so we asked for their green tomatillo, which has a little heat. I also asked for a side of refried black beans to use as a dip. The queso was good too. I'd been thinking about their new brunch board every since they've re-launched brunch! Holy frijoles! Torn between pozole because I love soup for breakfast. My hubby and I split the brunch board. It's a little pricey but you can totally split that meal with at least 3-4 people. It had a little bit of everything! Breakfast quesadilla bites stuffed with bacon, cheese and fluffy eggs. Brisket tostadas with eggs and veggies. A huge spinach, mushroom, onion omelette and some amazing pan fried potatoes with green peppers and onions. It all came with some sauce for the omelette but I was looking for some heat! The Diablo sauce was delicious and front of the tongue habanero spiced hit. I loved it all! AND there was a huge Mexican pastry split in half and generously slathered with Nutella and banana slices. We were able to share the pastry with the entire table. I would order that omelette on it's own. The breakfast potatoes are awesome and pan fried. I think the highlights were the brisket tostadas, piled high with meat, eggs and cheese. The pastry was delicious and dangerous - it's too close to summer for all that sugar. But, we'll definitely be back. The mimosas are made with fresh fruit and juices. The top shelf margaritas are worth what you pay for so just be mindful of ordering too many. I also took the leftovers for breakfast, snack and lunch again today. Muy bueno! What are you waiting for? Go there, get some. Life is too short for boring food - and be sure to add a side of Diablo to spice up your life :) read more

I had seen a good reviews of Milpa so we checked it out on a Saturday night. It's attached to a run down hotel, looked sketchy outside. The inside was basic in the main area. We were seated in the dining room on the right. It was ok. The chairs and table were basic banquet style. Our waitress was nice. We ordered some drinks from the menu and she returned that they couldn't make them. We ended up getting margarita flights. They were ok, most tasted the same. We ordered queso - it was thick and hard to get on chips. Like a glob of melted cheese. I had to use the restroom while there - it was absolutely disgusting. As soon as you turn into the hall with the restroom it reeks of urine. The bathroom itself smelled awful, and was in a state of disrepair. That was enough to make me not want to finish my meal. I am hoping today was just a bad day at La Milpa. We were there 20 minutes before we ever got waters and 25 before our drinks arrived. It took another 10 before our server ever came to the table. The queso blanco was not hot. The server was either too busy or just not well-managed. He was friendly, but we only saw him twice in the entire hour we were there. The food was good. They have always been good before (albeit a little slow). But today was just a disappointment. I don't think we will be back for a while. read more

Love this place. The appeal and service has really been stellar recently, especially all the cool stuff going on with marketing. Makes the place feel more lively and eventful. It almost feels more than a restaurant, more like a celebratory gathering with friends and a beautiful spot. You can tell there is a lot of organizing being done behind the scenes to give the customers a wonderful experience and I know I personally really appreciate that, it stands out to me. The food is not only good, but CONSISTENT. I can easily say the same for the drinks. If you're unsure which margarita to go with, I recommend trying their margarita flights. This is seriously the best Mexican restaurant in Texas. They have Queso Blanca and seriously every meal I have had here is incredible. I wish I could give them 10 stars. Definitely recommend. If you like spicy ask for the Verde Salsa, It pairs well with the Queso Blanca. Service is great as well. TLDR: This place has take a big dip in quality. I first started going to Milpa after their first remodel/menu over 5 years ago, and loved it. However, upon return - I was met with a restaurant that wasn't sure what it wanted to be. Meaning the restaurant was split in half, and was advertising other concepts. The staff presented us with torn up menus and sat us down in the bar area. I used to really love their salsa, it was a bright red, fresh and vibrant kind. That has since changed to a lesser quality. I ordered the sour cream chicken enchiladas. The sauce was ice cold and the chicken was dry. The beans and rice were subpar as well, the refried beans could've been canned. My wife got the vegan Al pastor tacos. It was just vegan meat in corn tortillas that were not even cooked, and they tore apart quickly. Maybe they'll focus again and get this place right again, until then it's worth skipping read more

When we previously dined here, everything was far better. The proprietors are making significant strides in their efforts to modernize the facilities. I really believe that soundproofing is necessary for the restaurant. It sounded as loud as a rush-hour train station. The cuisine was adequate. A freshly made, still steaming dish of Mexican cuisine. When it came to refills and other necessities, the service staff was lacking. And the flies had fun soaring over the dining room. We often have to wait ten to fifteen minutes for our order to be processed and an additional forty to fifty minutes for the food to be served. Additionally, servers hardly ever checked on us, and we always had to ask another server to help us. Numerous staff members loitering, unfocused on the patrons. read more

Came with a group on a Saturday night with a reservation and were seated immediately. It didn't seem that busy when we got there. The service was quick and our server was good about keeping our drinks filled, and getting any extra toppings etc that we needed. I split the steak enchiladas and the flautas with my boyfriend and enjoyed both. The portion sizes are good - even after splitting we had leftovers. Good margaritas! read more

The food at Milpa Kitchen Restaurant is a little expensive and menu missing a few classics, but this spot is worth it due to the vegan options, fresh food, and drive thru ordering. I did not eat here regularly before the pandemic, but we go almost every other month now. The birria is tender and delicious and the Tacos Al Pastor Vegano are spot on. I like the pineapple agua fresca as it is super refreshing and not a powder mix. read more

Something about this place seemed kind of off when eating here but I can't quite put my finger on it. The food is really quite expensive compared to some of the other locations in town and it seemed like the mixed drinks could possibly be OP. The service is alright they are pretty prompt even with the place being huge. But the thing that gets me is the holes in the wall and the general ambiance of the place it's like it is trying to be something but it hasn't quite figured out exactly what that is. Two big areas combined together with a huge bar. Have been twice with my parents because they love the place apparently. Have sat on both sides. I much preferred broken plate side to the non broken plate side. Good time with the family terrible gas afterwards. Hard to sit in the movie theater after that one. Luckily the movie we wanted to watch was also on Amazon Prime. read more

I ordered this from Uber eats and and requested to lock it up. First thing first I get there and was told my whole order was canceled because they didn't have horchata. (Ok so why cancel the meal) Secondly, I get home to finally enjoy the food I waited an extra 30min for just to see this.... Let's be honest this is not a birria taco. Not at all. I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it! Sis and I were at Golden Triangle and both became famished at once! Yelp to the rescue, this place was a mile away. Chips and salsa, here we come. Oh wow, we drive up to the seediest looking place next to an old motel. We're going in anyway because we need foods and drinks ASAP. The parking lot looked empty (3:30) but when we entered, the place was full of life! Super cool concrete bar! Exceptional waiter! Vegan options!! First things first: drinks. What an extensive cocktail menu! Sis got a Mojito (something crafty) and me a Margarita, plain and simple with a jalapeño. Uh, yummie! And got a nice buzz right away. We got the chips and vegan queso made of carrots, which did taste carroty and looked pretty orange. I snacked on just that but sis ordered a chicken burrito thingie. She devoured. Great service & food! Friendly smiles from everyone from greeting to good byes! We had vegan dishes! The options available were super fair! An actual vegan section so I would say, vegan friendly! Great portions (with leftovers). I've attached photos. We would come back for sure, with family who are not vegans, because I could hear the comments of how satisfied other customers were with their food. A place where different diets could be accommodated. They also have a wide range of alcoholic drinks that were so good. Absolutely love this establishment! Initially I came to eat here because my cousin was visiting from out of state and she is Vegan. That's not my cup of tea but I figured I would be open minded and give it a chance. So happy I did! I tried the cactus & veggie tacos with vegan black refried beans & rice. I also ordered one of the margarita flights. My cousin ordered the jackfruit birria tacos! Super delicious, the texture and flavor was almost identical to beef! I've since returned numerous times! First timers and we will definitely be back. Restaurant was clean, service was awesome and we were sat immediately. The selection was great and we love the taste of the fresh salsa. I had the tortilla soup which was huge and the best I've ever had since it didn't have a bunch of corn, squash etc. The other dish being the carne asada and enchiladas, was insane and fresh. The prices, including my swirl price, seemed on par with any other place I've been too except for chain places. I would rather have some place with flavor like this any ways. Milpa is an average Mexican restaurant. I have never had a bad meal, but at the same time, I have had an incredible meal there either. However, their margaritas are above average--definitely, a place just to go for drinks! Service is usually slow. It may not look like much. A little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant right? It is a bit more. The food here is outstanding. Starting off with salsa and chips. The salsa is excellent and has a lot of flavor. Ordered guacamole and nachos for an appetizer and that was great. I ordered the steak enchiladas. So it's steak enchiladas covered in queso with beans and rice. I was stuffed after the appetizer. But the food is fresh and almost everything is made in house. Also had a tamale that was great. Apparently the desserts sell it fast. They also have killer margaritas. They don't skimp on the alcohol. Over all this is a really good Mexican restaurant and it's only like 2 miles from my house which means I and my family will be going back. Often. This place was the very definition of mid. When we first got there, it was around 12:15pm on a Sunday. Lunchtime--when people are getting out of church or finally awake and hungry. You would expect the place to be busy, but it was almost completely empty, besides about 3 other tables out of what looked to be 50, if you don't count bar and high chair seating. Their drink menus seemed to have a lot, but when I went to order a coca-cola, I was informed that they only had Fanta and Sprite, besides the alcohol. It was weird considering it was a weekend afternoon, but whatever. Everything was alright up to this point, but the only real problems were when we actually got our food. We ordered the brunch items--2 different pancake orders, and 2 chilaquiles plates. At that point, about 3 more tables were seated, so the restaurant was still relatively empty. However, it took almost 45 minutes to receive our food. The chips and salsa were meh. The salsa was really thick and cold, and very unappetizing. It tasted like leftovers with no spicyness or flavor in general. When we did get our food, the pancakes were wayy too thick, and the chilaquiles were cold. The portions were good, nice and big if you're used to authentic mexican restaurant portions. Yet the food was simply just meh. The pancakes were incredibly thick, so much so that they practically got stuck in your throat regardless of how much syrup or topping you put. Not only that, but it felt almost pasty, like it was somehow undercooked. One was served with churros, which were cut up and spread around the pancakes. They weren't bad but I would have just gotten the regular pancakes had I known the churros weren't cooked in the pancakes. The chilaquiles weren't hot--as if they were made first, and the kitchen waited to take all our food out all at once. They were okay--nothing tasted like it had very much flavor. Somewhat bland. The horchata I had on the side was watery, and tasted like it had regular sugar than cinnamon. Overall, the wait service was good, but I don't think I'll be coming here again. Wasn't very good, but I certainly had worse. If you like bland "tex-mex" food, this is the place to go. EDIT: I also want to add that the restrooms were not labeled. I don't care if places have unisex restrooms over gender specific ones--they all have toilets--but there was a bit of confusion as to whether or not they were gendered or unisex or even available. That wasn't a problem, but clearly no one goes in there to clean very often. Both bathrooms were filthy, one having an old bowel movement inside that looked like it had been sitting there for an hour. It wasn't until we told the waitress it was there that it was actually fixed. Really gross, and shows how much attention goes into the cleanliness of this place. But I guess for a place that is empty on the weekend, they don't have much to clean. read more

My first time back since the remodel and I'm so glad I went!! It was literally like a while new restaurant or two I guess lol. I sat in Dericks section and he was AMAZING!! Very friendly and attentive!! Now to the food!! The birrea de brisket tacos were beyond good!! Amazing fresh corn tortillas!! The brisket was cooked with peppers and onions!! I'm literally at a loss for words because it was soooo good!! Not sure I'll ever order anything different. My daughter got the empanadas and she loved them. Didn't add a pic because she asked for chili con carne instead of queso so it would have been misleading. My friend got the Steak a la Mexicana and she was really impressed. The rice was just okay!! Charro beans have great flavor!! Chips and salsa we very good!! All I can say is I can't wait to go back!! read more

This review is based on over 20 visits maybe more. I honestly don't understand why this place doesn't have more stars. I've never had a problem with service or food here and I can be a little picky. The waiters always are quick to bring us refills, more chips, etc., I think what stands out the most to me at this place is their wide selection of drinks and food. You just can't beat their lunch specials ($6-$8) and all of their vegetarian and vegan options. If you are vegetarian, you can switch out any of their ground beef or chicken in entrees and get their vegetarian al pastor meat instead. There isn't another place in Denton let alone the DFW that offers this vegetarian meat option for such an affordable price and it tastes SO GOOD. Every time I go I ask for the green hot sauce because it is a lot hotter and tastier than their regular house salsa. This is definitely my favorite restaurant in Denton because the food is always on point and so is the service and ambiance. read more

Visited on Saturday and was very disappointed. First time ever to not have stellar service and food. 6 tables were occupied - including ours. Not sure what was going on, but we've never had slower service. Food was not the same, chips were stale. Server was friendly, but MIA most of the time. Took an hour and a half to eat and leave & we were on the way to a movie - otherwise we wouldn't have minded. Margaritas were spot on, but there wasn't time to order a refill. I do not live in Denton but was there to drop my niece off at school. We wanted to eat Mexican food and saw Milpa Restaurant and decided to give it a try. I was highly disappointed from the start. The salsa was cold, the chips seemed like they were bag chips, and my frozen sangria was barely frozen. I had steak enchiladas, my sister had chicken enchiladas, and my niece had tacos. The presentation was bad, the food was lukewarm and was not tasty and we just decided to pay and leave. I normally don't write reviews but I wanted to warn anyone from out of town not to go to this restaurant. Some of the reviews seemed like we'd enjoy the food but that was not the case. *1 star given only because I had to put something there. read more

Came for the 100 margarita options and they didn't not disappoint lol. I got a flight sampler with the infused margaritas and every flavor was delicious. I mostly came for drinks, but got a side of Spanish rice and black beans to fill up on and they were quite tasty as well.
