I've come to The Kava Bar in Denton several times and have usually enjoyed the atmosphere, which is why this is disappointing to write. Lately, though, something feels very off. The overall vibe has changed, and not in a good way. There seems to be a clear tension in the space that makes it uncomfortable to be there as a customer. From what I've observed, the current manager creates a very unpleasant environment. She consistently appears angry, tense, and overly controlling, and it visibly affects the staff. The employees often look uncomfortable, uneasy, and as though they are being constantly micromanaged. It's hard not to notice, and it completely changes the energy of the place. As someone who has spent money here and genuinely liked coming in before, it's frustrating to see management have such a negative impact on what used to be a welcoming environment. A business like this depends heavily on atmosphere, and when management makes both employees and customers feel uncomfortable, it reflects directly on the entire experience. I'm honestly surprised this hasn't already driven more employees away, because it is definitely pushing customers away. I hope ownership seriously reevaluates the current management situation before it causes even more damage to the business. read more

This is a bit hard for me to post because I didn't have a horrible experience but at the same time it was a bit uncomfortable and awkward for me at times due to how I was served. I would say it more 3.5/5 closer to 4. When I first walked in I went to the bar area and got stared at by guests and staff I believe who were seated around the bar. There was one lady behind the bar who after some time- she was helping out a customer or friend not too sure- came to help me with my order. That was nice. And then the owner I believe also was kind and helped me find a seat where they had a plug in for my laptop. Maybe it was in my head but I did feel like I was treated differently than other customers - it took longer for me to get helped and everyone else was chatted up a lot more but not me. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt but if people notice this as a trend even if it's unintentional I think they could definitely address it with the staff and change the feel and culture. I think this place is cool- the concept is super new to me- kava- and I enjoyed it and liked how it it's your first time you get a free bowl. But in terms of taste I didn't super enjoy my drink- I apparently had Kratom which I didn't understand that that's what I ordered because I didn't like it at all- super bitter. I then switched to just kava and had a coffee with it instead and that was much better but I still don't know if I would order this again. I think the concept is neat and that it's nice for minors to go to a place and have a drink that gives you a buzzy feeling like an alcoholic beverage would- but it's just not my vibe. read more

Perfect experience during dry January! As someone new to Kava, I've heard about the wonderful benefits and was so happy to drop in to their Dallas location for my first experience. Atmosphere is amazing. Super inviting and everyone was very friendly. Our bartender was so kind, knowledgeable and so excited for us to try Kava which made our first visit even more special. I had the kava extreme - earthy and creamy. I definitely felt calm and more relaxed after drinking. My mom had the pineapple dream - it was sweet and yummy. We will definitely be back! read more

As this was purely a Yelp find, I have to thank my fellow reviewers for bringing to my attention the existence of this wonderful place. Walking in I was slightly apprehensive but mostly excited about delving into (for me) the uncharted territory of kava culture. Luckily Alex was there to offer guidance, and impart some wisdom about the world of kava and related products with infectious enthusiasm. As a first time customer I found the menu to be a little overwhelming so I went with Alex's recommendation and got a Fijian Sunset cocktail with a green vein infusion. My husband got This Sh!t is Bananas with a white vein infusion. I'll admit that I was a little worried about a strange or unpleasant underlying flavor (as per other Yelpers) but one sip in and any concerns I had totally disappeared. These drinks were delicious! Furthermore, this magical nectar lifted our spirits in a way that I didn't think was possible without any alcohol or caffeine. So, I didn't hesitate to grab a few of the canned drinks on the way out. Getting to this place may be a bit of a trek if you don't live in the city of Denton but it's absolutely worth the trip. There is a 100% chance I'll be returning! read more

Great spot to hang, they have such great staff that are willing to answer questions and get to know people, and they have a variety of drinks including coffee, matcha, ginger beer, and then Kratom and delta drinks if that's more your thing. I come regularly for knitting club on Wednesdays and Sundays, and it is great to have a place where you start to recognize regulars, they treat each other like family, bringing cakes for birthdays, and loving on each others dogs! This is my new FAVORITE spot in Denton!! The customer service was great. It was my first time here and the workers did a great job giving the spiel on the history of Kava and their unique menu. They also gave us a free shot of the Kava I believe, and it was definitely a strong earthy taste. I went with friends on Friday for their weekly karaoke night. We brought games and played some of the games they had too. I ordered a large Fijian Sunset with Green (Joy). I thought it was great!! I love cold fruit teas and this was perfect for me. When you're a first timer, you get to experience a Bula. This is somewhat like a cheers, but with Kava. Bula is the Fijian word for hello and love. You say it kind of like you do with "cheers" before drinking the Kava in a coconut shell shaped bowl. It honestly tastes like dirt water and the process may leave your mouth feeling a bit numb (it did for me for a few minutes my first time). It follows with a sense of serenity and relaxed state. It's a unique experience I'd do again. Following this, you can choose a drink from their selection of tea, Lemma Coffee, or Kava/Elixir infused drinks on tap. Don't worry, these do not have the dirt water taste. You must be 18+ for Kava or the Elixirs or can enjoy a "mocktail" version of any that interest you. They even have a small selection of canned beverages you can purchase to go. I'm a chocolate gal so I've tried the Nutella Bomb, Churro Cha Cha, Choco-Cherry, and Cookie Dough on the Botanical Cocktails list. I'm a huge fan of the Cookie Dough. As you navigate the menu, you can "pick a feeling". So far, I've tried "Joy" when I was having a rough day and "Relax" when I was anxious. I'm still navigating if I felt a change in mood. On my rough day, I did leave happy, but not sure if it was the drink or incredible vibes from the staff. Please note- when they came from Florida, they brought their prices with them. My adventure to Kava Culture in Denton when I was off work was a wonderful one. My Kavarista, named Andy, was incredibly helpful, kind and a great conversationalist. This place is billed by many as a place where you can grab a sober option - an alternative to beer. In that way, it is quite effective. Having a couple of cups of Kava will give you that "couple of beers feeling," but you never lose motor skill and you never get past a pleasant buzz. Friends, this is HUGE! They have Kava seltzers on tap, as well as mixed Kava drinks. No alcohol. I repeat - NO alcohol! I tried the Nutella bomb and OH MY! It was wonderfully tasty. Kava can naturally be earthy, but this made a hazelnut chocolate milk vibe that was tasty! They also offer Delta 8 drinks and cookies, as well as Kratom drinks. My advice - don't be intimated. This place sparks great joy. A friend and I came in for the first time wanting to try it out, and we are so happy we stopped by! Dominque was so warm and welcoming. As first-timers, it can seem a bit overwhelming since we were unfamiliar with kava. However, Dominque was very kind and able to walk us through the menu and describe what everything was. We even got a small sample! I ordered a green elixir with guava, and it tasted like a creamy herbal tea. I felt very calm and at peace, and felt very relaxed when I went grocery shopping afterwards. I went to try kava for the first time with my best friend, we absolutely loved it! The atmosphere was wonderful and they staff.. AMAZING! We had Alex and we loved her so much we went a second time a couple days later with more friends. If she recommends something GET IT, some of the best service I think I've ever had! Even if they open one closer to me I feel like I'd still make the 45 minute drive to Denton because I can't imagine I'd get anywhere near as good of a server as what she was. read more

I walked in expecting to order a coffee, and started to socialize with other customers playing Bimini Ring (as I waited to be served a drink). Being the only brown person there, I immediately was asked to leave, and the bartender/barista came from around the bar and threatened to call the police if I didn't leave. At that point, I had only asked to see a menu and try and order a coffee as I awaited for my Uber to arrive after having dinner next door. I stopped by because the place seemed chill, but the customer service was definitely the opposite. The server was frankly rude and abrupt in a manner that didn't reflect well on Denton's environment (which I grew up as a local to). After asking his name (tall, thin, light skinned, brunette male, with a negative attitude) he refused and almost bumped chests with me in order to threaten the police being called on his behalf, despite me who had just walked in to order a coffee. My first ever experience there was definitely racists and I don't like that type of energy within any Denton establishment. Whatever that employees name is, he set a terrible first example to a local native who is an avid coffee shop regular.
