Gumbo was excellent and so was the cornbread. I also had the shrimp and crab boil which I didn't care for too much. The crab was a little dry/over cooked and the shrimp was just so-so. Didn't taste as fresh as it should, but I am from Seattle so I am particular about this stuff! Great atmosphere though. read more

I decided to try somewhere new and somewhere that had crawfish. Definitely disappointed!!! I asked for an order of fries with my crawfish. Fries came out first and waited about another 15 minutes then my boyfriends food came and I waited another 15 minutes on mine. The place has an eclectic atmosphere and there are all kinds of people in here; from the young to the old, the prissy to the tattooed but if they've been here regularly, then we have one thing in common - love of Hoochie's seafood! Sometimes, it's tough trying to find a place to sit especially during an evening when it's really packed - weekend nights, Lent, local event; but it's worth the wait and the hassle. I've eaten a number of the seafood places that offer Cajun cuisine and specifically a good po'boy sandwich in the DFW area but out of all of them so far - Hoochie's in Denton is my favorite! I drive up to Denton every so often only for the shrimp po'boy! His restaurant gives just the right amount of shrimp in that sandwich, beautifully and lightly covered in a nice cornmeal breading. Through and through it's got the right amount of everything in that sandwich. And if you're a fries person, well, they're not fantastic but they are well done thick steak fries and certainly enough of them in the basket! This was our second time there. We weren't super impressed the first time but gave it a second chance. Ordered the platter for two. It was the skimpiest I had ever seen. For that price I would expect a decent amount of food TO SHARE. There wasn't even enough corn to share. They must have cut those niblets into quarters but only put 3 pieces on the platter. Absolutely disappointing. And the whole yelling out customer's name as the wait staff steps out from the kitchen...do you realize that you're standing next to tables with customers and yelling in their ear??? Ugh! I have no idea why some of these reviews are so positive. All of their fried offerings seem to use just basic catfish breading. Odd. (My wife had the fried shrimp, and it had catfish breading, which made for an odd flavor combination.) The potatoes had tons of pepper on them, and the corn tasted like bleach. Worst of all were the hushpuppies. They are odd, mushy, undercooked cubes (yes, cubes) of compressed catfish breading. I have traveled near and far across this land, but never have I ever had hushpuppies this bad. Brought them home for the dog. He still hasn't touched them. read more

Husband and I came here last night to eat. We were on a mission to find good crawfish in Denton because it's hard to drive all the way to Addison for our favorite crawfish spot every time we get the craving. We were incredibly disappointed. The crawfish was as dry as a bone and practically disintegrated when you pulled it out of the shell. It seems they cook the crawfish early in the day (maybe even before opening?) and reheat it whenever someone orders it. So gross. My first adventure to the restaurant rich Denton Square resulted in a stop at Hoochies. Overall I enjoyed it very much. I ordered the Dungeness crab plate and it came with corn on the cob and potatoes. It was very good although there was a little too much pepper on the potatoes for me, felt like my lips were burning =) Great atmosphere and service. My only complaint is the seating. You can be standing in line to order and a group will come in behind you and take a table without ordering leaving you with nowhere to sit. If you're alone, sit at the bar, if you're with a buddy, secure your table first. read more

Not much in the way of customer service and the food is mediocre. Fried catfish tasted "muddy", fried shrimp had good flavor, fried oysters were decent, french fries were too thick not cooked long enough. Hush puppies were square (too thick) and very doughy. I tried Hoochies in search of my native Cajun food in Denton and unfortunately I was not at all satisfied with what I found. Hoochies is a "Cajun" food place with barely passable fried seafood and other NOLA inspired dishes. I tried the fried fish and shrimp and the seasoning was not nearly at the seasoning level I'm used to. In all fairness, I am a lot more critical of Cajun/Creole food due to growing up on it and traveling to Louisiana to eat. If your expectations are not as high then you could possibly enjoy the food at Hoochies. read more

Enjoyed this place. Nice atmosphere and the food was very good too. The gumbo is tasty. Not Cajun gumbo in my opinion but still good. The blackened catfish was prepared perfect. I came here b cause I had had good experiences before . NOT today first of all I like to sit at a be served at BARS rather than TABLE SERVICE as I am an individual . I made my order and then I was told the total . I was initially OFFENDED as if I was being asked if I could afford it . I was informed that usually people stand in line and order at the register and PAY for their entire meal in advance . SO this is no longer a friendly place wheras an older gentleman ( 59.6 ) can walk in and order a beer then an appetizer , then decide on a full meal or not . Unfortunately , I ordered a 1/2 dozen ' oysters ' ... since I was never handed a MENU I did not see the price --- $ 10.95 c .--- what was served were the most PATHETIC and SMALLEST oysters I have EVER been served in my life . I could NOT send them back --- I had already PAID . The gumbo was good and so was the kid's sized piece of cornbread . There was a box of gloves on the counter / bar the whole time I ate with one USED pair balled up next to that . One server asked how my meal was . I told him how I felt about the ' oysters ' . This might just be one of the harder reviews i've sat down to write. On one hand i feel like this place really meets the four stars i've given it, but price and taste of food just don't quite meet that. The new location is 5/5 stars, super impressive job done on the building and decor!!! Staff is 5/5, some of the friendliest, down to earth people i've run across...every single time i go. To compliment that the service is 5/5, even on the busiest days they are fast! So with everything being near perfect where do they lack? I think the food is really good, but doesn't quite hit the 4/5 star mark. When i think about it i have to admit everything is good, but nothing sticks out in my mind. Price point is a tad bit high as well, yes i realize this is probably on par with most restaurants of this nature, but given the fact it's not full service and the food isn't absolutely amazing i think they could work on pricing just a hair. WIth this decor and building really standing out it's a damn shame the majority of music that comes from there is country. I couldn't agree more with Molly T with the idea of NOLA style music, maybe jazz or better yet....some southern blues. Blues music would compliment the restaurant SO WELL!!!! I hope they take this into consideration. As of now i'll give them the 4/5, because i do think this place stands out here in denton. Did not know why I didn't come here before! Great place to get Cajun/fried/seafood in general. You place your order at the cashier and they call your name when your food is ready. The service was very fast and you can choose wherever you want to sit. I had fried oysters and my boyfriend had fried shrimp. They were both delicious as well as the hushpuppies that came with it. I'd say I'm not a fan of steak fries so that was the only thing I didn't like, still giving them 5 stars for the rest of the food! read more

Originally from Louisiana, I'm always searching for good Cajun food which is really hard to find in the metroplex. I have tried Hoochie's several times. I had given up on them when they were at their old location because the taste of the food was mediocre at best, but decided to give them another try this past weekend in their new location. I will say that I like the decor of the new location. They did a great job and I like the atmosphere. My wife and I ordered the boiled platter for two - the menu said shrimp, crab legs, sausage, corn and potatoes. The price was a little high, $29.95, but for what sounded like a lot of food, we went for it. I was reminded why I gave up on them before. When the platter came out we were highly disappointed. There was a small amount of shrimp, one crab, and five small slices of sausage. They had taken one ear of corn and cut it up into about 5 smaller ones, The most disappointing part was that the potatoes were undercooked and still somewhat hard. For 30 bucks we expected a lot better. Throughout our lunch, 2 employees working behind the bar were talking with either a patron or a manager (we couldn't tell which) and it was a constant gripe-fest about the food orders (how they kept running out of items for the last 3 weeks and weren't ordering enough, and talking about other staff).
