The check-engine light had been on in my wife's car for several weeks now, and it was finally time to take car of it. I really wanted to bring it to my regular mechanic, Imperial Auto, in La Puente, but now that I've moved to Glendale and am staying home with the baby, making the trip out there is a bit of a hassle. So, I checked Yelp for something closer. The first result was Honcura's. It had good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I called up Stanley to ask if I could bring my car in. From the first words he spoke, I knew I could trust this guy. That's my big problem when bringing my cars to any mechanic other than my usual--I never feel that I can trust them. Another perk about this place is it's close, really close. My wife was home, watching the baby, so I just through my folding bike in the trunk and went down there. At first sight, I could see he was a really nice guy, and again, that I could trust him. What a relief! The prices he quoted me were very good. Two other mechanics said I needed a particular part that was going to cost me $240 for the part alone. Stanley said, "naw, I don't think so. It's probably just the distributor o-ring. I'll change it for $30." Right there, he saved me $210! He gave me an intermediate tune-up, changed the distributor o-ring and replaced an oxygen sensor (the main problem), all in a matter of hours. When picking up the car, we talked for a little about sports, our beat-up and injured bodies and our families, and I felt very comfortable. Probably, if we were the same age and we'd gone to high school together, he'd probably be one of my pals. So, after my first experience there, I already feel completely comfortable and secure in knowing I've got a good place to take my car. For the past 2 years, I've been going to Stan for my oil changes. He's super nice, but there's really nothing special about an oil change. I did like that he never bombarded me into buying more unnecessary services like most other places (im pointing my finger at you, jiffy lube). However, this last time, I took my car into Honcura to get my brakes looked at.. and this time around I decided it's time for Honcura to get another 5 star review. I work on a car building competition show on SPEED network and am around super knowledgeable auto techs and teams of mechanics and car dudes all day. After I told the lead auto techs on our show about the $260 to get all front and back brakes changed, including an oil change on my Civic, they laughed and were convinced that I was lying -- saying either I got a steal or my mechanic probably did a shoddy job.. Or that I might have gotten stolen parts (hah) and to just take the price and run! Remember, these techs are unbiased and consult for a living (plus we're all buddies now), so they have no reason of exaggerating or lying to me like shops competing for my money. They told me most shops would probably average $400+ to change out all my brake pads. Seeing as how my car has been running the smoothest it's ever been for the past 2 weeks free of squeaks and rattles, Im going to take a shot in the dark and say that Stan is simply the man. Ive been going here for almost 10 years. (Hence for the two stars) It was a small shop back then compared to what it is now. I would say i am (was) a loyal customer since this morning. Even though i live 40 miles away I still go to him because I liked his service. Recently I have noticed Stan became so busy he stopped caring and seems always in a hurry when you asked him a question regarding your car problem. He always says my car is fine. Which i dunno if its a good thing or a bad thing. Good thing in a sense that I don't have to spend to fix something. Bad thing in a sense that I continue driving my car then it breaks down on me while im in the middle of the freeway. Either way its kinda irritating because deep inside i know there is something wrong with my car but i trust the guy to believe him that nothing is wrong not because he inspected my car but just because he told me nothing is wrong. Im not an expert on cars so i guess i have to accept what he says. Thats how much i trusted Stan until this morning. Last week my car was acting up. It stalled on me several times while I was driving with my family. Its been doing that for the past six months but it looks like it had gotten worse so I went to Stan to get it checked out. He started the car and started revving the engine. He told me everything looks fine. I told him its not fine and I want him to fix it. Without really checking the engine or anything He told me he needs to replace a part. I was kinda skeptic but because I trusted him I said okay. He said he was gonna order the part right after we talked and I said I will be back on Sat to get it fixed. When I got there Sat morning he said what part did you need on your car again? I was really irritated but I kept my cool because he said he can still work on my car that day. Mind you. I live 40 miles away. I waited 3 hours and finally he said my car was done. I was happy that finally i would not be worried driving my car. The car drove smoothly going home so I thought everything was okay. I was wrong. Monday i drove my car to work and it stalled 3 times. Then today It stalled again 4 times. I called Stan to tell him what happened. His response to me was really disappointing. He told me that I need to leave the car with him for a day because HE DOES NOT WANT TO GUESS ANYMORE!!! Excuse me? GUESS? are you kidding me? Who told him to guess? I did not want to spend $$ for him to guess. I wanted to say You are a mechanic not a fortune teller. So basically he replaced something that was not broken. I am so disappointed and sad because I considered Stan to be a friend. I did not expect him to say that but he did. I dunno if I would still go back to him after this. Im prolly gonna start looking for a new mechanic around my area. I guess this is what happens when you get famous. You forget about the people who made you famous. read more

I have come here three times: one for an oil change, once for major service and this last time for minor service and an oil change. Now as many people say he is not an ill mannered person and seems honest but truly beware - he was going to charge me $90 for a service (oil change and visual inspection) while HONDA includes a visual inspection with their $30 oil change. I know nothing about cars so I called Honda while in his shop to compare the service he was charging for to a Honda oil change. Now its his shop and he can charge whatever he wants - nothing that dishonest about it... But for someone I thought was affordable (and so do many others apparently) not happy at all. read more

The best! Stanley is the nicest and most experienced mechanic ever. He knows what he is doing and best of all HE DOESN"T RIP YOU OFF. As a woman, that's the most important thing to me. I was used to having my Honda taken care of by another highly reputable Honda shop but their prices had been inching up and when my car started making a metalic noise, based on the the great reviews here, I went to Honcura. Stanley instantly diagnosed a broken belt tensioner. 4 hours and several hundred bucks later the problem was solved. So I thought. The next day the car was making quite a racket. I drove it straight to Honda who said that the bolt installed was incorrectly done. It seems that several years before, Honda had "re-routed" the belt tensioner on the car. The dealer said there was no fix other than a new engine block. I had it towed back to my previous mechanic who agreed with Honda but thought the original block could be salvaged by repairing the bolt threading. They saved the day. To be fair, when I called Stanley, he said he was very sorry but felt that I should have told him about the Honda technical changes. It seems to me, that someone who holds himself out to be a Honda expert should know about the technical aspects of the car he services. He did offer to discuss a partial refund/future repair but I'm going to stay with my former mechanic. In sum, Stanley is an honest man, however, with limited technical skills. If all you need is an oil change or a hose replacement, then Stanley is your man. He will not cheat you and stands by his work. But, if you have a complicated or difficult diagnostic challenge, go to the experts. Even if you have to pay more. read more

Came in with a complex air conditioning problem on my 2007 Civic, and Stan was able to isolate each problem and give me an estimate pretty quickly. I own an Acura MDX, and every time I take it to the dealers for a oil change or a service, I walk out spending an astronomical amount of money. There are always parts to be replaced, always. Are you kidding? I just called Honcura for a quote on replacing the timing belt on a 2002 Civic with 104,00mi. and Stanley, who it sounds like is the owner, just told me to wait until I reach the recommended 110,000mi. I explained to him that I'm past the 7year recommended period and he said don't worry about it. This is the first mechanic I've called looking for a quote who's actually not tried to get money. I can't say anything about his workmanship but I'm impressed by his honesty in not encouraging me to get service I don't need. By the way his quote for a timing belt replacement for around $400 is less than 1/2 of most dealers. read more

I was just in this shop this past Monday after being referred here by S & S Auto Repair on La Cienega. I was told this mechanic works on Toyotas and I called to confirm they did. I brought my car in after taking it to several other places who could not figure out an unsettling clunking noise in the suspension and I had mentioned on the phone a possibility of what it could be after doing some online research. When I arrived, a technician (maybe the owner), test drove the car with me and told me another possibility of what could be wrong with the car. He pulled the car in, assessed it, found the problem after three other places could not diagnose it. He even had me drive the car to confirm the noise was gone and advised me on the solution and gave me a price quote. I agreed and was told the work would be done by noon and came back to find it was complete. Very professional, very honest, and very clean shop. Stan's the man!!! My Honda civic ex was almost at 100,000 miles so it needed to have the required service maintenance of replacing the engine belt, water pump, and all other belts. The Honda dealer was trying to charge me $1,100 for the maintenance and they needed to keep the car for 2 days. I looked around on yelp and I read all the great reviews on Honcuras pricing and customer service so I figured I would give them a shot. My '05 Nissan was being a jerk and idling rough. I took it to Modestis in Culver City, payed $115 just for a diagnosis. They wanted $400 to fix the problem, which incidently was diagnosed wrong. I found Stanley and Honcura thanks to you fellow yelpers and payed $187 for new spark plugs, an oil change (always $25), he topped off all my fluids ($0), and checked for other issues. Stanley is HONEST, HONEST, HONEST! You will never find a better mechanic. This was the first time in my life that I left a mechanic with a huge smile on my face. The itemized breakdown he provided showed the parts total including oil and filter @ $152. I payed $187. That's right he only charged me $35 dollars for labor. Found this place based on all the positive yelp reviews, so I took my honda in to because my instrument cluster went out and to recharge my AC. Stanley asked if I checked both fuse box locations before he even agreed to look at the car. I did check it, and swore it was something more electrical involved since the fuse was still in tact. He couldn't work on the car that day, but told me to bring it back the next morning. I told him I'd rather just leave the car overnight with him. I asked him for a ball park estimate, he told me 60 for the dash, and another 60 for the A/C.He allowed me to do that. The next, around 11pm, I got a call back from Stanley telling me that the car is fixed. Turned out it was a fuse he said, and the car was ready for pick up. I went to go pick it up, and I asked about the A/C. He said he forgot about it, but quickly moved my car in back into the garage and recharged it. After doing his thing, he told me my A/C is running at 42 degrees. I asked him how much, and then he told me 10 for the fuse and 40 for the A/C. So all in all, a wonderful experience, except he forgot to do the A/C. He's very professional and cordial. Communicates extremely well and doesn't exhibit any shadiness what so ever. Since, the last time, I have a couple more repairs done by Stanley. First was my transmission which broke while, I was driving on the freeway. My car stalled and luckily, it started and I was able to pull into a shoulder. This was on 12/18/12. I took my car to my brother's mechanic but, they wanted $1600 to rebuild my transmission. I decided to have my car brought via ACSC (AAA) back to Glendale. Stanley quoted a price of $1200. There was still quite a bit of noise which was due to the wheel bearings. I had Stanley also fix those on 01/03/13. Overall, I am satisfied with the service and can recommend Honcura to anyone looking for a good mechanic. read more
