I was visiting family from the Bay Area and on a strict diet, so I wanted to eat some where that had healthy options. I actually ate here 3 days in a row so I got a good taste of the experience for sat dinner, sun brunch, and then Monday brunch on the way out. The first night, I came with family, who ordered the Brussel sprouts, which came out a little over cooked, soft, not crispy, and the balsamic was just ok. However I did share the gigantic ribeye dinner with my date and it was honestly one of the better steaks I've had recently, especially considering the size, it was cooked perfectly medium rare, and the veggies and mashed potatoes that came with it were amazing. The server was also very friendly and funny, the experience in general was a 4.8. The second day I came in for brunch, the server that we had was truly a delight, she was extremely friendly, her name which I forgot, was a spice like Cinnamon or something. Anyway, she was very sweet, she let me and my gf sit next to each other and take up two tables, even though it was quite a busy time (they do have a large back room). I was able to build my own omelet which was nice since like I said I was in a strict diet. I had the San Francisco omelet with mods, which came with ground beef, spinach, mushrooms, I also added zucchini, pickled jalapeños and some bacon. It was amazing! Once again, the server seemed like she would go out of her way to make our experience a great one! I will also say that they had some soul music playing which me and my girlfriend really liked (bias of course). Unfortunately the Monday brunch was not as great of an experience as the other two days. I will give a little grace considering it's Monday, and the bartender was the only one serving in the whole place, he did not live up to the standards the first two servers provided. Anyway, we walked in and there was one person in the whole place, sitting at the bar, we sat next to the window and I asked if I can push the two tables together so I can sit next to her, he actually said no initially bc he wanted to save room for bigger crowds (keep in mind, this place is empty and they have a huge back room), he eventually said "it's all good we are not that busy right now anyway." His negative tone kind of set the "tone" for the rest of the experience. I ended up getting a coffee while my date a latte, the coffee was noticeably not hot, and tasted kind of stale, when he came to refill my coffee later, it was still not hot at all, I don't want to say it was cold but it was just kind of warm, and kind of gross. This time I decided to get the same omelet with egg whites, initially I was unsure if he would be willing to go out of his way to accommodate for the previous modifications, but I asked and he was "willing", though he seemed a bit annoyed (maybe this is just his usual face). The omelet came out different obviously with it being egg whites and unfortunately it was a little runny, while the veggies were a little overcooked. I realize that cooking with egg whites are not as easy as regular eggs but either way, it was noticeably runny. The server did show that he had a little sense of humor and could smile at one point while helping a different group, mainly at the expense of a group of teenagers who came as a group of 10 kids to post up a single poster in the window. It was nice to see that he "could" smile. Ultimately, he was ok, but a little awkward, and really never smiled. The breakfast wasn't terrible, the seasoning (like the other meals, was great, the potatoes came with bell peppers and green onions on top and were good, and other than the eggs being a little runny, it was still good. The music was also different, 80s punk/ Ramones radio. To top things off, I ordered some house made pickles, which I was very excited about since I was a little hungover, but they never showed up :( Like many of the other reviews, it was pretty expensive, which is understandable since they advertise that most of the ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Two omelets, a coffee and a latte came out to $80, not including tip. I am willing to pay for great quality food and great service, but it does little room for error, and the last experience did have quite a few of them. At the end of the day, it is a unique place that offers a lot, breakfast, lunch, dinner, organic ingredients, a charming ambience that reminded me of a grog bar, midtown setting that is a short walk from the riverwalk and downtown. Obviously I liked the place since I came back twice, and if the option of 4.5 stars was possible I would give it here bc the first two experiences were stellar. And, if i never came in on Monday, it would've been easily a 5 star rating. AND once again, I'd hate to judge a place based on the performance on a Monday morning, however, I simply can't give this place 5 stars after that last experience. read more

I have always been a fan of this place but my last visit and this most recent one just aren't what I remembered. I ordered Korean street tacos and felt like it went down a notch with the tacos shells vs fresh tortillas. Maybe I missed that on the menu? The atmosphere is relaxing and easy on the eyes. Very comfortable couch-like seating. It's kinda small therefore, a nice intimate place for a romantic meal. My sandwich on the other hand, not so wonderful. Homegrown Gastropub is truly one of Reno's hidden gems! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere stood out. The restaurant has a rustic feel with a unique blend of antique charm. It's family owned by a father, brother, and sister, which adds to its welcoming and authentic feel. I also loved learning that the building has historical significance. Be sure to check out the plaque outside if you visit. The customer service was outstanding. Zach greeted us as soon as we walked in, seated us quickly, and took the time to explain the menu and answer our questions. His friendly personality and knowledge made us feel right at home. I had a tough time deciding between the Homegrown Burger and the Alaskan Salmon, but I went with the burger. It was cooked exactly how I requested, juicy, flavorful, and easily one of the better burgers I've had in Reno. I'd give it a 9.2/10. My wife ordered the macaroni and cheese. She thought the flavor was delicious, but the sauce was a little thinner than she prefers, so she gave it a 6/10. Even so, she still finished the entire plate, which says a lot about how good it tasted. For dessert, we shared the apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream, and it was the perfect way to end the meal. It wasn't overly sweet. The warm cobbler paired perfectly with the cold, creamy ice cream. To top it all off, Zuck even gave us a mini tour of the restaurant, which made the experience feel even more personal. Great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere make Homegrown Gastropub a place I'll definitely be returning to. We stopped in on a Wednesday after my sister/brother-in-law arrived to town. Overall, it was pretty good! Here is what we noticed: - Great atmosphere inside, with a very cool bar. We sat at a small table near the bar and there wasn't a single person in the place (we were there around 11:15am). - Huge menu. We picked Homegrown because we wanted to have both lunch and breakfast options. And, there were a lot of local beer options on draft. - My wife and I split both the Vegan Breakfast Tacos and the After School Special. The tacos were the best of the two entrees...very tasty and we also enjoyed the side sweet potatoes. The grilled cheese sandwich was pretty normal, but the tomato basil soup was especially good. - As we were the only folks in the place, service was very attentive. Our serve noted that she was fairly new to working there, and made one small error, but it was nothing problematic. 88 dollars for two plates and a drink. Incredibly high priced. Walked in blind on that one i guess. I was hungry and wanted to give it a shot. I will start by saying my sandwich and beer were tasty and good. They will boast all local ingredients, but 30 bucks for a cheese steak on ciabatta bread is steep. The burger my wife had was the same price and nothing special to note exept she ordered no tomato and it came with tomato. Both of our fries were soggy and cold. A draft beer for 16 dollars is also more than expected. Our bartender was professional and chatty. He did pull a nice bottle of tequila down for us to admire, and told us about some other fancy top shelf stuff they had. I appreciate they were even open. Service was great, everyone looked taken care of. The place looked clean; and the food looked great everywhere, ours just flopped. All of the other patrons there were probably late 50s and up at 2pm on Memorial day. This is one of the most expensive underwhelming lunches I've had ever had in Reno. I really want to love this place - the interior is so vibey and chill and the staff is always awesome. But for the price you pay, the size and quality of food really doesn't match up for me. Their desserts are my favorite thing and well worth it! We were sat in the front section which had a nice ambiance and you couldn't really hear the noise and crowds outside which was nice. I ordered the mango margarita. I originally asked to make it on the rocks instead of blended but they couldn't due to being put of mango syrup, which is fine. It came out and tasted OK, but for $20 i was expecting more of a visual experience as well and something that tasted a little more elevated. Just felt like an overpriced ok mango margarita. The service was amazing as was the restaurant's extensive offerings of organic produce, all natural, uncured, antibiotic/hormone-free meats & dairy, wild Alaskan seafood, local organic bread from Beloved's Bread, organic pasture raised eggs from Kool Kids Ranch, and their pizzas are made from imported Italian 00 Flour. It was hard to choose from the wonderful array of healthy options but although fully a carnivorous person, this evening a Vegetarian Portobello Mushroom Stack caught my eye and I tried that. It was wonderful! It featured Balsamic panko crusted organic portabella mushrooms, layered with natural goat cheese, organic quinoa and grilled zucchini, served over organic wilted swiss chard, roasted brussel sprouts and a house oven roasted tomato sauce. The evening was pricey but expected when you have so many clean, organic ingredients on the menu...! The interior has a really cool feel showcasing a classy copper accented ceiling with antique chandeliers. I ordered lunch consisting of the pot roast french dip sandwich with a side of the four cheese broccoli soup. Everything was outstanding. I last ate at Homegrown Gastropub several years ago, so when my wife and I were looking for a nice casual dinner option after a Yelp event, this was an easy decision since it was close by and open late. We were seated quickly upon arrival and had a nice table by the window. Our server took our drink order quickly, we both got a pigeon head IPA that was alright, a little heady but was drinkable. The beer menu has several local brews which is nice. I ordered the chicken and waffles and my wife ordered a small salad, which was still pretty large. The chicken and waffles were alright, I expected the chicken to be more of a buttermilk thick breast, but as pictured they are more of a chicken fried chicken patty. There were 3 patties which was more than enough for the meal, glad I was sharing! The brussel sprouts wee good, not great. A little over cooked and mushy, would prefer more of a roasted crispy style but still worth eating. The service was good, casual which I appreciate, they knew when to check on us but also gave us space to enjoy our conversation. I understand that Homegrown is sourcing their ingredients locally and uses organic, etc. but the prices seem a bit high for me. I think having the sandwich options available after 5PM would be nice. I would come back, but may hesitate a bit to see if I'm willing to splurge on a pub style meal. Coming in for lunch or breakfast may be a better option for me as those menus seemed a little more reasonable and had options that appealed to me. Overall a good experience, I would come back and glad to know they are open until midnight which is rare in Reno, especially on weekdays! read more
