We were out and about a few weeks ago and while we hadn't planned to eat out, it got late and eventually we caved. We searched for a few places on Yelp and discovered Homefire Grill. After being seated, we explained to the hostess that on the way in we were guessing what the restaurant had been before. (The outside of the building looked like it had a past-life.) She gave us a bit of history and we heard that Homefire Grill is a "one-of" that opened new ten years ago and works in conjunction with the hotel across the parking lot. It was also explained that sometimes people think it's a BBQ Grill store...go figure! Anyway, back to the restaurant itself. It was quite dark (comfortable but not bright by any means), but unfortunately, the atmosphere was too noisy to be romantic. (Perhaps it was just the other - much older- diners contributing to this as I could hear every word of the conversation from the table across from us.) The decor felt cozy but would likely be more welcoming on a cold evening (when I'd appreciate a fire) and the artificial brightly coloured flowers seemed to clash with the warmth that was otherwise expressed. As for the food, it was piping hot which was incredibly refreshing. After an appetizer basket of bannock, I ordered the Deconstructed Chicken Cordon Bleu and was completely overwhelmed by the portion size. I packed over half of it to go and left stuffed. While both the food and the service were decent and overall we enjoyed ourselves, I end my review with some sad news: There was nothing that wow-ed us enough to make a special trip back. Nonetheless, Homefire, thanks for taking on the challenge of the restaurant industry, for your creative menu and for lunch the next day! We wish you all the best! read more

And yes, it has one of those! (And by "one of those," I mean a big open homefire pit). I ate here for dinner a couple Fridays ago. It wasn't super busy, but considering it's on the super West side, that's understandable. This place is somewhat known for its bison. Now, I'm vegetarian (I know, I know! Why would a veggie go to a house of bison?!) But I was with a couple friends, and they did the meat! One friend had the grilled steak (bison) salad. It looked really good. It was a nice big size for a salad, and he said it filled him up perfectly. If I ate meat, that's what I would've ordered! He went off on the Saskatoon berry balsamic vinaigrette; he loved it. And here's a fun on the farm fact for you: they buy local bison from Kickin' Ash Buffalo Meat Products in St. Albert, AB. I went for the Greek Pizza. The crust was nice and thin, perfect for not filling up on breading. It had the real kalamata olives on it, fresh basil, artichokes, tomatoes, and feta. The pizza is cooked in a wood open stove, giving the crust a really good crispness. Such a bonus! Even writing about it again makes me want more! It's not really my type of place to eat at (it has more of a franchise feel to it) but the food was really good. It's too bad that this place is so far west, because it's an easy enough place to eat at; whether you're hanging out with friends, family, or a hot little date. read more

Service was good, food was disappointing. We ordered the bannock to start, the maple whipped butter was nice, the bannock was nothing more than a large biscuit, it was not a traditional recipe. I ordered the pork tenderloin, it was good but the potatoes and vegetables served with it were lacking. My husband orders the Irish stew, it was ok, but the potatoes and gravy tasted and had the consistency of the powdered mix. We will not return. read more

Went here for the second time ever the other night, and once again had a great experience. I tried this place with my girlfriend last Valentine's Day and had an amazing dinner, however we wanted to try their full menu. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere, albeit a little dark, but cozy, with a fireplace in the middle of the room. We started with the bannock, before moving onto the carnivore pizza and the bison meatballs. Everything was delicious particularly the wood fire pizza. The only negative I have about this place is the limited beer menu. As a huge fan of craft beer, I would have liked to have seen more than two taps (yellow head and alley cat). Looking for a restaurant in the far West End for a family dinner my sister suggester Homefire Grill I had eaten here once some 10 years ago and not been overly impressed, but convenience won the day, and we agreed. A reservation was made and my sister and a cousin and I met for our dinner on a quiet Monday evening. From the moment I stepped through the door, my earlier experiences were washed away. The restaurant was warm and inviting and a friendly staff member immediately directed me to the table where my sister and cousin were already seated. We were given menus and drink orders were taken quickly and efficiently while the three of us chatted and caught up. We looked over the menu and our very friendly server was a great help in explaining the menu and knew her way around it well. My sister is celiac, and our server understood fully what substitutions could and could not be made, and what dishes would suit her restrictions, and we were pleasantly surprised that some of the signature dishes were gluten free without even really trying. Neither the Bison Burger and the Bison Meatloaf use binders in their prep, so they qualify as gluten free. A nice touch for signature dishes. In the end both my cousin and I picked the Bison Burger, and my sister when for the Salmon Greek salad. We chose not to go with an appetizer, as the mains seemed quite substantial. (and were...) The restaurant is decorated in warm tones with a large, cozy fireplace in the center. We were seated right next to it, but did not feel overheated at all. We were very comfortable. The servers were excellent and genuinely enthusiastic about the food, which is pleasing to see. The food came in a reasonable time, and was a revelation. Any criticism I may have had or heard in past was negated. I have eaten a lot of bison burgers over the years, because when they are good, they are wonderful. Sadly, they are often dry and not so good. This was the single best Bison Burger I have ever eaten. It was moist, tender and flavourful and wonderfully seasoned. It was served with a generous helping of crispy bacon and a Saskatoon Berry relish which was the perfect condiment here. The sides were mashed potato and gravy, with fresh grilled vegetables, all of which were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, as well as being utterly delicious. This was a wonderful meal, served by nice people in a very nice restaurant, made from local ingredients with an aboriginal view to the menu. I was completely charmed and will return again. My in-laws always claim that they like to dine where old people dine, because they know what they like and keep going there. Well, this is a prime place for me to take them next time they're visiting. The average age was ~50 during our visit. That said, the food was decent, the portions large and the service awkward. Won't be rushing back here... though on our way out, we were kicking ourselves for not having ordered the pizza. Went to an event with my girl group last night at the Homefire. They were fantastic! There were about 50 of us eating, and we ALL raved about our meals. I had the bison burger with a tossed salad - super good, and I want the recipe for their house vinaigrette! Two of the gals at my table had hot mixed vegetables as their sides that they were raving about, and apparently the meatloaf was AMAZING. We came here for a large birthday party with 30+ people and had our lunch in the party room. The room is a great size and it was nice and intimate with round tables and 6 people at each table. Very festive decor inside. Our servers were very friendly and accommodating. The kitchen service was incredibly slow but they did let us know they had a new chef in the kitchen, discounted our bill and were very apologetic. I had the Guinness lamb stew and it was amazing. The mashed potatoes with gravy on the side were possibly the best mashed potatoes I've ever had.. what do you guys put in them?! I love the Aboriginal flare to the menu as there are not many restaurants that do this. I'm so conflicted, because I had one meal here that was really good (salmon en croute) and one that was barely edible (crispy chicken dumpling salad). The salmon was wonderfully decadent, with a complex flavour profile. Overall, the entire meal was so satisfying. The salad, on the other hand, sucked. The chicken was seasoned with sage. SAGE! In an ASIAN SALAD! Oh, the humanity. Not to mention, completely devoid of salt. The dressing was ok, but it was advertised as a vinaigrette and it was thicker than I expected. The almonds, somehow, also lacked flavour. The rice noodles were the strangest ones I've ever encountered; they seemed almost like leftover spaghettini that had been left out too long. The best thing about this salad? The freakin' vegetables. And I never say that. I would've sent it back, if it wasn't 10 at night and I hadn't ordered it for room service. Joke's on me. Worst dining experience. The restaurant was more than half empty the entire time we were there. Tonight, after we finished our meal and my friend was drinking her coffee, we were unreasonably asked to leave as a reservation was coming, the tables beside us and in front of us were all empty. Lured by friends' descriptions of the delicious elk lasagne, my husband and I decided to put off our first visit to Homefire Grill until his parents came to visit us in Edmonton. We were promptly greeted by the hostess, who asked if we had a reservation--which was odd, as the restaurant was nearly empty on a Saturday night. (Having read some reviews on Yelp, I see reservations are recommended. I can't back up this claim.) Our server was friendly and attentive, but didn't write down our orders as we placed them (as a former server, I'm immediately suspicious of others who take more than two orders without a pen and pad). We weren't difficult and made no special requests. I was hardly surprised when our meals arrived before the appetizer we'd ordered (bannock), and was certain it had been forgotten. When this was pointed out and the order cancelled, he apologized, but made no effort to remedy the mistake beyond taking it off our bill. When he returned a few minutes after our dinner had been delivered, he said he'd entered the bannock with our order (what--no prep sequencing for an app before the entrees?), but the kitchen had neglected to make the order. Sorry, dude--blaming the kitchen is seriously bad form, even if it was their fault. And though we wouldn't have dreamed of making such a request, he should have offered to comp the appetizer and bring it out last instead of giving my mother-in-law the opportunity to cancel it. The saving grace was the pretty decent food. My MIL ordered the crusted Arctic char, my FIL a bison filet, and my husband the aforementioned elk lasagne. I got the steak salad. Everyone seemed to be pleased with their dishes. However delicious my salad was, it was drowning in Saskatoon berry dressing--and I'm a woman who likes my salad dressing. I probably should have sent it back, given the egregious amount of liquid on top. But I didn't, as I should have ordered it on the side. The meat was cooked to the temperature we'd requested (medium). My husband and I might give Homefire Grill a second chance, but we won't be making another special trip there (and certainly not with out-of-town guests) before we determine our first trip was just a bad fluke. read more

This is where we treat ourselves when we are in Edmonton. The atmosphere is relaxing and unrushed. We were seated immediately, and even having arrived at dinner time on a Friday evening, the service was friendly, personal and prompt. There are some unique menu items and we chose entrées that are a little more exotic than you typically find (one bison and one elk entée). They were both delicious (yes, forks reached across the table in both directions). Nicely presented and seasoned just enough to enhance the flavours while letting you remember that you were enjoying something more exotic that you find most places. The restaurant itself is pleasant and cozy and service was decent. I ordered the Guinness Irish stew and what came out was the epitome of mediocrity. The "puff" pastry was hard and flat and the "stew" underneath consisted of maybe 5-6 small morsels of lamb in a bland gravy with some peas and corn thrown in. The side of steamed vegetables was tasteless but at least they weren't mushy. Mashed potatoes were ok but again pretty blasé. I would have been dissatisfied had this been a microwave dinner never mind paying nearly $20 for it. read more

I ordered a side Caesar salad at $7 and the spitfire grilled chicken for $23 and the carrot cake for dessert which cost $8. The Caesar salad was terrible: soggy lettuce and croutons and far too much burnt bacon along with dressing that could have sunk a ship. The chicken entree was okay but not spectacular. The mashed potatoes and gravy or Demi glacé was served bone cold to the point where the Demi glade had started to congeal and that happened when the server placed my entree in front of me. The charred veggies (baby broccoli, carrots, squash) were okay and somewhat on the soggy side. The only saving grace of this meal was the 1/2 chicken which was beautifully grilled and fork tender meat. The carrot cake dessert at $8 was just highway robbery! While the cake was good, it was not 'homemade' and the serving size was not generous as claimed on the menu. To top things off, I was not pleased with the cleanliness of this restaurant. My tea cup had a sticky handle and my entree plate had greasy and blackened fingerprints on it! Sanitation and hygiene are not paramount in this facility. I would tend towards a 1.5 star for this grill and only because of the tender and tasty chicken and would likely not return. read more

Was staying at a nearby hotel so decided to walk over to the Homefire Grill. It was very cold but walking into this restaurant warmed me up, literally and figuratively. There is a fireplace in the middle of the dining lounge which made for a cozy atmosphere. Everything I had was good. Had the cream of mushroom soup and the pork tenderloins in cherry whiskey sauce. Pork was cooked just right, not too done. It came with potatoes that were well-seasoned and a vegetable medley that was cooked just right. Will come here again next time I am in town. read more

Having just turned 50 this was then obviously the place for me to have dinner! :). But seriously, friendly, efficient, fast service. In fact maybe a little too fast. Maybe we've just become used to waiting elsewhere. Salt and pepper chicken wings to start: tasty. My daughter had the ribs, I had the bison meatloaf. Maybe a little dry but that is usually the challenge with bison. Can't say there were any incredibly outstanding flavours but I would still recommend the meal and the venue. read more

Homefire Grill has a pleasant atmosphere and nice decor. Tables near the front doors do seem to suffer from a low floor draft anytime the front doors open so be wary when it's cold out. We had excellent service and the meal was right on par with what I expected and what I paid. Wanting a restaurant on the west end that took group reservations and got decent reviews, I came across Homefire Grill and we were pleasantly surprised. The menu is an interesting mix of traditional and wild game dishes (I had the bison meatloaf and my husband had the elk lasagne), the service was wonderful and the atmosphere seemed to be influenced by Native American culture. This would be a great place to take someone visiting from another country to experience wild Canadian game! We would definitely go back. read more
