I had the lasagna and was offered several types of sauce. I ordered the Alfredo for which I was charged an extra fee for this choice. My friend who has a tomato allergy was going to order a pizza. She asked what other sauce they had and was advised that she would be charged extra if she chose anything other than olive oil. Her only choice was a medium as all other size crusts were topped with tomato sauce. Really, I find these different choices a-money grab. Now to the food... We've been customers of Royal Pizza for years (Ottewell location). I can sum up how we feel about it like this: Today 2:00pm - 4:33pm 2 - My boyfriend and I realize how hungry we are. We haven't eaten yet and barely ate the day before. 2:02 We call royal pizza, excited more than the average people should be. Unfortunately delivery does not begin until 4. We're bummed and I'm annoyed with the whole pizza community because I'm going to have to search substitutions for Royal. But I already know there are none. 3:10 Frustrated at the prospect of opening a new online account and faintily famished I wake my guy "ok, how about x pizza?" "Nope" he says, "Royal at 4". "Ok, I may have to leave by then so how about x pizza or x pizza?" "Royal at 4." was all I got back. Then Master of the Universe went back to sleep. 3:12 I call Royal. Order a large Royal Special, extra sauce. I tell them we're SO HUNGRY and ask for the delivery as soon s his guy gets there. I can tell he feels me and I almost imagine him putting on a Royal cape to run to the back exclaiming "listen up everyone! We've got a nine eleven and we've got to come through for these guys... For some reason (I'm not entirely sure why) Edmonton has a bit of a legacy when it comes to pizza. Major Canadian pizza chain Boston Pizza began here in 1965 (they also have locations in USA and Mexico) and Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria (now a country-wide chain) began in this city in 2007. However, if there's one thing that the locals know... It's that Royal Pizza is the place to go for a classic, cheesy, North American-style pizza. VUE Weekly named them #1 Best Classic Pizza 2018 and I'd have to say that I agree. Opening in Old Strathcona (technically Queen Alexandra) in 1969, there were only a small number of pizza joints in the city at the time. Today, there are 16 Royal Pizza locations in Alberta, including many that offer a dine-in experience. I visited the original location on a Monday evening, which is very easy to locate in a popular shopping plaza area just south of Whyte Avenue. You'll recognize their blue lettering with a crown on top of the 'R' right away. The dining room is quite large and is pretty simple and straight forward when it comes to decor. It looks like what you would expect from a family-friendly pizza place. However, one really nice touch are the mural-sized black and white photographs on the walls of old-timey Old Strathcona. This neighbourhood takes a lot of pride in its history and the restaurant captures a bit of that, which is nice. Our server was very friendly and prompt which made it easy to place our order quickly. (As long-standing customers of Royal Pizza, we know exactly what we like.) The menu offers more than just pizza. They have starters that include several types of poutine, and entrees like pasta, calzones, burgers, and donairs (c'mon, it's Edmonton). I'm pretty intrigued by something called a Royal Italian Loaf (which I've never tried) that somehow involves a "loaf" loaded with ham, salami, pepperoni, onion, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. I don't understand it but I definitely want to try it. However, on this particular visit we stuck to our tried and true favourites. To start (and to include some vegetables in the meal) we ordered the Caesar Salad (Served with garlic toast - $14.25 for meal size). This salad was fine but certainly nothing to write home about. The lettuce was crisp and fresh and the croutons were plentiful. Unfortunately, the overall flavour wasn't all that exciting. The salad didn't seem to be dressed enough and the dressing was pretty thin and not housemade. The garlic toast seemed to be a little bit burnt but was very buttery. All in all, I was glad to have some greens in the meal but not very impressed by this salad. Let's face it - you come to Royal Pizza for the pizza. There are 23 classic pizzas on the menu and 11 gourmet ones. And of course you can build your own as well. Each pizza comes in three sizes; small, medium and large. Over the years there have been two classic pizzas that we have sort of combined into one pizza: the #19 Pepperoni & Mushroom and the #20 Salami & Mushroom. We order Pepperoni, Salami & Mushroom ($20.50 for 10" medium) and have affectionately named this pizza "Tim's Special" after my husband, who we claim invented it. This is our favourite pizza. Always reliable and consistent, the pizza arrived hot and covered in obscene amounts of gooey cheese. I love their crispy crust and the way that the toppings go right to the very edge. Loaded with pepperoni and salami, this pie is meaty and they don't skimp out. I find that the two different types of meat add an extra level of flavour and deliciousness. I like their zesty pizza sauce a lot and the cheese is the biggest star of all because it is absolutely heaping and glorious. This is one of my favourite pizzas of all-time and it never disappoints. Note: If you order a large size they do cut their pizzas into squares. This is important. Our other favourite pizza that we always order is from the gourmet section. We love it because it's a little bit wacky and that's what makes it unique and fun. #29 The Boss Has Gone Mad (Spaghetti, meat sauce and mozzarella cheese - $18.25 for 10" medium). Yes, this pizza is covered in spaghetti. It's like eating two meals in one! You should definitely try it before assuming that it's weird - because it is weird - and in the best possible way. Super saucy spaghetti, covered in loads of melty cheese... This pizza just works! If spaghetti on pizza is wrong, then I don't want to be right. I should probably get around to trying the Royal Special one day, because it sounds like it's their signature pie. Royal Pizza is a perfect comfort food and their pizza is delicious. This is exactly what you want from a North American-style pizza experience and they always deliver. And on that note: They deliver! For a place that serves pizza, I like that the gluten-free medium pizza is the same price as the regular medium pizza. The pizza is tasty and provides some different choices for the pizza aficionado. The one thing that I would recommend is to order online and include a tip. If you order by phone, you may forget to tip your delivery person and they should get a minimum of 10.00 for two medium pizza's. My Aunt turned 94 and I wanted to take her out for lunch. She hates everything, but I remember she told me that she likes Royal pizza. Noon hour is sooooo busy. We got in just before the lunch crowd. Had way too much pizza here today. Pepperoni and Black Olives! Service was quick. I thought it was a more fancy eatery but it has more of a Denny's feel. Royal Pizza is a great place for pizza lovers! I happen to be one myself! If you like quality pizza and don't mind paying for that quality, you have to try Royal Pizza. It is yum yum yummy goodness! Royal Pizza is one of the few family non-chain restaurants left in our city. I always prefer to support the local businesses over the huge monopolies. Another great thing about Royal Pizza is the room. They have a lot of seating so even when it's busy, you aren't cramped and uncomfortable. In fact, it's a very comfortable place to eat. The only thing I'm not really fond of is the lighting. It's pretty low. Some people like a darker eating atmosphere, but I'm just not one of them. Quality pizza. All these years I've been falling out of love with greasy American pizzas and here we go again, with Royal Pizza. Don't get me wrong though. Royal actually has some very delicious pizzas. The fact that the crust is thick and crispy gives for a delicious and crunchy bite into the pizza. Their crust is again old school and perhaps not the healthiest, but certainly enjoyable on the grease adventure that all humans subtend to, every now and then. Next, we have a look at the sauce, cheese and toppings. I like the taste of every bite and I appreciate that they have a decent serving of sauce on them. The pizzas are nice and cheesy too, while the toppings are also generously applied. Let's make one thing clear: ROYAL PIZZAS ARE THE BEST PIZZAS TO EAT OUTTA THE REFRIGERATOR. Their gourmet pizzas are a fine list and definitely give panago and other chains a run for their money. However, talking about money. The pizzas here are unusually expensive. A medium (10") gourmet pizza is $20 which certainly isn't the case with Pizza Hut or even Panago. I guess their pizzas are quite delicious and I would pay the extra bucks every now and then but it makes me feel like it's something I would do only on a special occasion, like having a girl over for movie night or something (yes, I'm a cheap guy). I don't like that they're so expensive when they're really just like a pizza chain. It's not like they serve organic pizzas or some form of exquisite pizzas that aren't found anywhere else. Food is fantastic, service is excellent every time we go there. We have never had a bad food experience ever, even when the place is packed service is always amazing. My largest complaint is the paid parking, even picking up a pizza netted me a hefty ticket, despite the pizza being brought out promptly. Street parking is likewise absent or heavily monitored night and day. I have gotten tickets twice now while sitting down to eat in the restaurant. The parking service does not care if you are a paying customer of royal pizza, they still want their money. So be warned if you want to enjoy Royal pizza you MUST pay for parking, despite what the ambiguous signs say. Only go if you are willing to pay the extra fee to park, or live close enough to walk. I ordered here once a long time ago and caught them on a very off night so I didn't bother a second time until my company ordered and it was the best I ever tasted. 2 years in they are top choice when I want a pizza treat, the usual special is large ,eat lovers with a tossed salad. The final bill is over 30 bucks but it is ohh soo good. I tried the chicken wings and found they were sub par, can get better in a frozen box from the supermarket-so they are not worth the 10.95 price. I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Royal Pizza and this location in particular. It made the first pizza I ever ate. This is old style pizzeria pizza. Make no mistake, pizzerias like this are totally a North American phenomenon, not Italian at all, and they've developed their own kind of Italian cuisine. There is a noticeable difference between pizzas made here than those made by Pizza Hut, Boston Pizza and Panago. They make their own dough and have a great tangy roma tomato sauce. Best of all, they use quality ingredients for their toppings: fresh mushrooms, cured ham, pepperoni with zing and crumbly italian sausage. It's also thick crust mediterranean style pizza, which is much more common here than Italian/New York thin crust, not Chicago deep dish but definately substantial. I'd also recommend their pasta dishes. It's pizzeria pasta, not tratoria, so pitch your expectations accordingly. Their spaghetti and meatballs, however, baked in cheese, is just comfort food goodness. This is a good family restaurant. I had been hesitant to try Royal Pizza, despite its relative proximity to my house. As I was expecting a only a slight improvement over the standard delivery variety, the costs deterred me. But as I had yet to find a crave-worthy pizza for delivery here in Edmonton, I decided to give Royal Pizza a call. Yelp reviews were positive and there's always a crowd inside. So I ordered a large pizza with Broccoli, Pineapple, and Mushrooms, along with an order of Garlic Cheese toast, because Sarah and I were just that hungry. And a half an hour later - the pizza arrived - on a Friday night no less. While the bill set me back $38 including tax and tip, we had leftovers, which usually does not happen with Pizza Hut. Royal Pizza's crust is the star - it's thick (probably about 1/2 inch), dense, perfectly seasoned, filling, homemade, and didn't come from a frozen ball. And to top it off, it holds up well when delivered. My only complaint was the lack of flavour in the pineapple, but that's a small one. And while the prices may be high, I think I'm going to make Royal Pizza my default pizza delivery option. read more

As you can see from my reviews I eat Pizza ALOT! So I can say that I find Royal Pizza the best takeout pizza in the city. We have ate in two times and the service was great but we just feel this is a takeout or delivery place. We always get the Fred's special and it's incredible. I don't what it is but the crust has this sweet and salty taste very addictive. Lots of cheese and topping. I always crave it. Only one downfall but it's is really expensive I know it worth it but for the size a lil pricey. We always get two mediums and it is almost 50 bucks!! Hey...this place is pretty good. I'm used to spending $100-$120 at an average restaurant for my family of 4. Today's bill was, in comparison, a paltry $60. The pizza isn't amazing, but it's solid. The crust is greasy and nice and crunchy. It'd probably not the healthiest, but I'm happy to forgo that when dining out. The pizza is pretty thick and the toppings were layered thick. However, some of the edge pieces were essentially bread with a bit of cheese. Usually when I go to a place with pizza in the name, it's pizza we get, but someone in my group ordered lasagna. I tasted a bit of it and it was pretty good. It was a spinach and feta lasagna, but it was slathered with meat sauce. They did offer for it to come with marinara or plain as well. This is a great place for a family or group to come. I'm giving this 4 stars because the service was great. The waitress was lovely and prompt. I had a small Greek pizza the crust was lovely but it had huge chunks of onion on it. For a small pizza, I think there was an entire onion on it. Not great. I also had the most decadent piece of chocolate cake. So moist - loved it! I was extra impressed with Royal Pizza`s results. Toppings were to the edge....no bland, extra crust with no reason. REALLY DELICIOUS. I have found my `go to`pizza place......finally! The others can R.I.P. Only downside was cost. Pricey for the size you get......but heck, yum, yum, YUM. They can get away with it as far as I am concerned with quality pizza like they offer.
